ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG5 BRANCH B

Y-DNA testing of descendant families proves a shared direct paternal ancestral line between Levi Guthrie’s descendants and the rest of Guthrie Family Group 5. Levi’s parents remain officially unidentified through documentation.

One family historian at Family Search has proposed that the parents of William Guthrie of GFG5-Branch A and this Levi Guthrie are David Guthrie and Susannah Thurston, who married in Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia on 11 Oct 1723. William’s birth year is given to us as 1722 in Virginia. That could be accurate or an estimate. Levi’s birth year is given to us as 1744, which would put a large age gap between siblings. Such a gap is not unprecedented, but it may also suggest a missing generation.

However, it is documented that William Guthrie did indeed have a brother named Levi Guthrie. William’s eldest son, Henry Guthrie, served a 6 month tour during the Revolutionary War as a substitute for his uncle Levi who had apparently been drafted, but had a family to protect. This Levi Guthrie had married Elizabeth Yamons in 1763 and had at least 3 children before 1776. Is this Levi the brother of William Guthrie?

The name Levi is also associated with the Guthries of Carteret County, NC, a large group of Guthries that are now theorized to belong to GFG5. Some also speculate that this Levi Guthrie may be related to the descendants of Daniel Guthrie and Mary Little, the likely progenitors of the Carteret, NC Guthrie families. Y-DNA testing of the Carteret family line is required to prove shared paternal ancestry.

MISTAKEN IDENTITIES

Caution is recommended when reviewing online trees as there may be an identification error for this line. Instead of “Levi” this man is listed as “Stephen Levi” without any known documentation. This happens as the result of a forced merge of two individual profiles.

NOTES:
There are very few early records identifying Levi Guthrie and his family. Burned courthouse records combined with their emigration from place to place make it difficult to get a good fix on them. Y-DNA testing of two presumptive sons, Dempsey and Stephen Guthrie, match the Guthrie Family Group 5 genetic profile.

Records of St. James Northam Parish in Goochland, Virginia kept by the Rev. William Douglas between 1750 to 1797 list the marriage of Levi Gathry and Betty Yamons, both of the parish, on 27 Dec 1764. Three other Guthrie couples are listed in Douglas’ register: Philadelphia Guthrie and Richard Elliott (1768), Thomas Guthrie and Elizabeth Gardener (3 children christened bet. 1773-1782), and Elizabeth Guthrie and David Morris (1784). None are known to be directly connected to Levi’s family.

No other documents were found in the Goochland County records for Levi Guthrie. Next, he reportedly settled somewhere in North Carolina.(See JD Lewis’ NC Parish/County Formation Maps for Year 1750 and Year 1760.) Levi Guthrie (DAR Ancestor # A132791) served as a Blacksmith & Artificer for Col. Long, Dep. Quartermaster, at Halifax, NC Militia. This is the same location that Henry Guthrie from Branch A was serving on behalf of his uncle Levi for a 6-month period.

Levi Guthrie next appears in the 1790 census of Wake County, North Carolina where his neighbors include several Vinson households. William Vinson married Lucy Guttery (Guthrie) in Wake County on 22 Jan 1787 just prior to the census, with Reuben Vinson serving as his bondsman.

According to Kentucky Tax Books, the Guthries and Vinsons moved from Wake County to Green County, Kentucky about 1800-01 settling on Crocus Creek and Cabin Fork Creek. A year after the move, their section of Green County became the newly formed Adair County, Kentucky. The west fork of Cabin Fork Creek extends into Adair County, while Crocus Creek is primarily in Adair County. At their closest point the two meander within 5 miles of each other.

The Treaty between the Cherokee and the U.S.A. signed at Tellico, 25 Oct 1805 (Ratified Indian Treaty #48) opening up the land they ceded for settlement. Land Grants were issued. The Index for Tellico Warrants, Surveys, and Grants lists:
Warrant No: 111 – Guthrie, Levi – Warrant Date: 9-1-1803 – Survey No. 290 – Survey Name: Same – Acreage: 73 – County: Adair – Watercourse: Crocus Cr. – Survey Date: 8-8-1804 – Original Page: 155-156 – Grantee: Same & Heirs – Grant Date: 6-23-1807 – Original Page: 261-262.

Just two years later, one of the Crocus Creek locals reported that part of the Moon had fallen on Adair County. Read about The Moon Meteorite of Crocus Creek, 1809.’

Listed in the next entry: The Steph. Gutrie Household
1M and 1F 26-44, 2M and 1F under 10. Total Household Members – 5.

Levi Guthrie died after 23 Dec 1816, presumably in Adair County, KY. His wife Betsy died in the vicinity of Edwardsville, Madison, Illinois in her 82nd year on 25 Dec 1825.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Abt. 1744: BIRTH of LEVI GUTHRIE
Levi Guthrie was probably born in Virginia or North Carolina. The date of 1744 is listed in trees and on various sites as his birth year, but no original source has been found. The only document known to list his age is the 1810 census, which places him in the 45 and over category indicating his birth was before 1764.

The date of 1744 may be only an estimate of his age, which would make him about 20 at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Yamons in 1764. He could have been older. As far as is known there is no data except the 1810 census, which simply lists his age category as 45 and over (Before 1764).

Abt. 1745: BIRTH of ELIZABETH ‘BETTY’ YAMONS
The discovery of an 1825 obituary for “Mrs Betsy Guthrie, relict of Mr Levi Guthrie, in the 82nd year of her age” reveals that she was born about 1743. This would make her about 21 at the time of her marriage to Levi. (Edwardsville Spectator – 25 Dec 1825 – Madison, IL)

1764: MARRIAGE of LEVI GUTHRIE & BETTY YAMONS
St James, Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia on 27 Dec 1764

The Douglas Register, a detailed record of births, marriages, and deaths beginning in 1756 as kept by the Rev. William Douglas includes:
Gathry, Levi & Betty Yamons, both of this parish 1764, Dec: 27

This indicates that both Levi and Betty were living in Northam Parish at the time of their marriage.

We know of only 3 or 4 presumed children belonging to this couple: Dempsey, Stephen, and Beverly, but the first DOB is not until about 1774. That’s 10 years after Levi and Betty were married. Chances are that there are other children for this couple.

Abt. 1765: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – LUCY GUTHRIE
Colonial Virginia or North Carolina

Lucy Guthrie is not found in any documentation specifically naming Levi Guthrie and Elizabeth Yamons as her parents. Levi Guthrie is the only Guthrie head of household in Wake County, NC at a time when Lucy married William Vinson in 1787. The Guthries and Vinsons moved from Wake County, NC to Green (later Adair) County, KY. The circumstantial evidence suggests it is highly likely that she is their child.

1774: BIRTH of SON – DEMPSEY GUTHRIE
Colonial North Carolina
The 1850 census clearly lists Dempsey Guthrie’s birth location as North Carolina, which would seem to indicate that sometime during the 10 year period after their marriage, Levi and Betty moved from Goochland, Virginia to North Carolina. The primary cluster of Guthries from GFG5-Branch A was living in the Halifax, NC area by 1766. By the time of the Revolutionary War, William Guthrie’s son Henry took a tour of duty as a substitute for his uncle, named Levi Guthrie. That could technically be this man, especially if he was older than the minimal age range estimated here.

1775: BIRTH of SON – STEPHEN GUTHRIE
Colonial North Carolina
The 1880 census for Stephen’s son, Dempsey Guthrie, lists his father’s birth location in North Carolina. Stephen was 26-44 in 1810 & 1820, and 50-59 in 1830. Calculating a census-based birth range results in DOB between 1776-1780.

1779: BIRTH of SON – BEVERLY GUTHRIE
North Carolina, USA
I have not found definitive proof of Beverly Guthrie’s date or place of birth.

The 1818 census of Madison, IL lists him as 21 and over. The 1820 US Census of Goshen, Madison, IL lists him as 26-44, or born between 1776-1794.

1780: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – PRISCILLA GUTHRIE
North Carolina, USA
Daughter Priscilla aka Priscy was probably born in North Carolina. Her DOB is given as 27 Aug 1780.

1787: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – LUCY GUTHRIE
Wake County, North Carolina, USA
Lucy Guttery (Guthrie) married William Vinson in Wake County, NC on 22 Jan 1787. Their bondsman was Reuben Vinson.

Abt. 1797: MARRIAGE of SON – DEMPSEY GUTHRIE
Unknown, presumably Kentucky, USA
Documentation in the deed records of Green County Kentucky lists a Dempsey Guthrie whose wife is named Elizabeth Ellen (MNU).

Many trees currently list Margaret Dice or Dykes as the wife of this Dempsey Guthrie, but that is a couple from a later generation

1800: THE GREEN COUNTY, KENTUCKY TAX BOOKS
The Guthrie family shows up on the Tax Books for Green County. Two years later this section of Green would form Adair County, Kentucky.

Levy Guthrey (Jul 11), Demsy Guthrey (Jul 11 – 200A Crocus Cr).

1800: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – PRISCILLA GUTHRIE
Green County, Kentucky, USA on 28 Nov 1800
Priscilla Guthrie married John Hadley. They had 3 sons: James, William, and Dempsey.
Priscy died at 45 years of age on 4 June 1826 in Collinsville, Madison, Illinois. John Hadley died in 1851.

1803: MARRIAGE of SON – BEVERLY GUTHRIE
Adair County, Kentucky, USA on 19 December 1803
Beverly Guthrie married Elizabeth Patience Grider at the Adair County Courthouse on 19 December 1803. Patience was the daughter of Martin and Sarah (Coffey) Grider.

1804: MARRIAGE of SON – STEPHEN GUTHRIE
Adair County, Kentucky, USA on 5 January 1804
Stephen Guthrie married Betsy Grider in Adair County, KY on 5 Jan 1804. Note that some trees list him as marrying a Sarah Hawes on this same date, but that data is found only in a transcription. A digital copy of the original record lists Betsy Grider.

1814: DEATH of DAUGHTER-in-LAW – PATIENCE (GRIDER) GUTHRIE
Adair County, Kentucky, USA
This was the same year that Beverly & Elizabeth’s daughter Elizabeth Guthrie was born. The COD could potentially be related to childbirth.

1815: 2ND MARRIAGE of SON – BEVERLY GUTHRIE
Adair County, Kentucky, USA

Beverly Guthrie remarried on 23 May 1815 to Nancy Hamilton.

1818-1820: VINSONS MOVE to ILLINOIS
If Lucy and William Vinson remained in Adair, KY until after the marriages of their daughter Nancy Vinson to John Peter Glenn in 1815, and son Daniel M Vinson to Ann Ennis in 1818, then their move to Illinois took place between February 1818 and 1820. William Vinson’s household was enumerated in Madison County, Illinois for the 1820 Census.

1821: DEATH of SON – BEVERLY GUTHRIE
Madison County, Illinois, USA on 1 October 1821

1825: DEATH of WIDOW – ELIZABETH (YAMONS) GUTHRIE
Near Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, USA
Previously listed as 1800-1810, likely in Adair County, KY, Elizabeth was believed to have died prior to her husband Levi. A death notice published in the Edwardsville Spectator on Saturday, 7 Jan 1826, reveals she survived and was either living in Madison County, IL or visiting her family there at the time of her death on Christmas Day 1825. She was 82 at her death, which estimates her birth year as being about 1744, which is accurate based on the data we have.

1827: 2nd MARRIAGE of SON – STEPHEN GUTHRIE
Russell County, Kentucky, USA

Stephen’s first wife and the mother of his children, Betsy (Grider) Guthrie apparently died about 1826. He remarried a widow named Hannah Godsey. She was born Hannah Pope and first married John Northrop, with whom she had one daughter, Sarah ‘Sally’ B Northrip. Hannah married secondly to Samuel Godsey in Pulaski, KY on 22 May 1817, and ten years later to Stephen Guthrie on 24 Oct 1827 in Russell County, KY. Stephen and Hannah provided consent for their daughter Sally Northrop’s marriage to James Bethurum in Pulaski, KY.

Aft. 1830: DEATH of DAUGHTER – LUCY (GUTHRIE) VINSON
Waynesville, DeWitt, Illinois, USA
Lucy’s exact date of death is unknown, but occurred sometime after the 1830 census. Find-a-Grave lists her as buried in the plot next to her husband, William Vinson, at Rock Creek Cemetery, but no stone photo is available.

1833: DEATH of SON – STEPHEN GUTHRIE
Pulaski County, Kentucky, USA, presumably

1840-1844: DEATH of DAUGHTER-in-LAW – ELIZABETH ELLEN (MNU) GUTHRIE
Madison County, Illinois, USA
The wife of Dempsey Guthrie died between 1840-1850. She was in her 60s.

1844: 2ND MARRIAGE of SON – DEMPSEY GUTHRIE
Montgomery County, Illinois, USA

Dempsey Guthrie married again at the age of about 70 to Keziah (Foxwell) Lay, the widow of William Lay. She was about 20 years his junior.

1860: DEATH of SON – DEMPSEY GUTHRIE
Montgomery County, Illinois, USA on 1 February 1860

John Hadley was born in Maryland in 1776, of English parents, and when a young man went to Kentucky, where he married a lady by the name of Guthrie. This family came from Virginia and settled in Madison county at a very early date. In 1817 Mr Hadley removed with his family to Illinois, and settled on Pleasant Ridge, in this township, June 20th of that year. He was a volunteer in the ranging service of 1812. He reared a family of children, who grew up and settled around him. Of his sons, James, Dempsey, and William, only one, William, is now living. Dempsey died here, and James died in Missouri, whence he moved a few years ago. William Hadley was born in Kentucky in 1806, and is well known to many of the citizens of the county. He is a Methodist minister, and was among the early preachers in Madison. At present he is living at Carbondale in this State, while members of his family are still residents of this county.

  1. How do you find out your autosomal DNA match? It looks like I am a descendent of GFG5 branch B. Abijah Guthrie and Sarah Cowan are my great great grandparents. Their daughter Mary Frances Guthrie is my grandmothers Mother. How can I verify this is the correct tree? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    • The first step in genetic genealogy is to use traditional methods of genealogical research to trace your family line. If that leads you back to Abijah Guthrie and Sarah Cowan there may be documentation to prove your historical lineage. Next, you utilize DNA to prove the genetic line. Since you descend from a female Guthrie the only appropriate test is an Autosomal DNA test. I recommend starting with an AncestryDNA test and then using the free transfer protocol at FTDNA to transfer your data there where you can officially add it to the Guthrie DNA Project. When your results come in you’ll have matches to cousins who share DNA from many of your ancestral lines. The closer a common ancestor the more atDNA you’ll share, and the more likely you’ll be able to triangulate matches with cousins you share in common. Some of your matches will have Guthrie ancestry of their own that is not related to your line at all, and your relationship to them is actually by some other common ancestor. Looking at shared matches and common surnames is important to rule them in or out as a match to your Guthrie line. If you receive Autosomal DNA matches to people from the same Guthrie line as yours, or to those from the same Guthrie Family Group (GFG5) your shared atDNA may be Guthrie DNA or from a shared ancestor related to that line. However, don’t expect that every descendant of Abijah Guthrie & Sarah Cowan is going to show up as an Autosomal DNA Match. Due to the way we inherit DNA at the time of conception each of us gets a different 50% of our parent’s inherited DNA. You can have a rock solid paper trail with a Guthrie cousin, yet share no atDNA with them. Look for matches common to Guthrie Family Group 5 within your results.

    • This kit is a YDNA-67 marker test. You could upgrade it to the 111 marker level, however no one else from GFG5 has tested at that level yet. You would not have any other group data for comparison until another person tests at the Y111 level. There is currently no Family Finder (Autosomal DNA) test associated with the kit. Upgrading to include this test could be helpful to you and other descendants of this group by showing you genetic matches to Guthrie cousins whose lineage are not represented by Y-DNA testing. If you have already tested this individual at AncestryDNA, the results can be transferred to the same User/Kit at FTDNA for free (or the $19 fee to unlock all of the tools and additional features).
