NOTES:
Martha Jane Guthrey was the only daughter of William and Polly (Musgrove) Guthrey. Her marriage to Jesse H Stansell took place in Georgia. They lived in Georgia during the 1850 census, but moved to Kings River, Arkansas by 1860. Prior to the 1880 census, they moved a final time settling in Summerville, Union, Oregon.
There appears to be some question as to the identity of Jesse Howell Stansell’s parents likely due to naming patterns within the same family. Newton County, GA Estate Records, 1822-1900 includes documentation for the estate of Levi Stansell, 1869. A petition filed by R.A. Stansell and Ann T.A.S. Stansell notes that Levi died without a will on 12 May 1869. An inventory of the estate was filed on 21 May 1869. Documents indicate that the widow was Charlotte W. Stansell, and other heirs being Jews Nash, Jessie H Stansell, D.L. Shell for his wife, a Mr Passmore as guardian for I.B. Stansell, and Mary W. Henderson, R.A. Stansell, and T.A.F. Stansell.
The number and named of Martha and Jesse’s children is also up for discussion as this family apparently had a practice of utilizing multiple given names. According to the 1900 census, Martha gave birth to 13 children, but only 9 were still living at that time.

CHILD 1: ELIZABETH ‘SUSAN’ LANE STANSELL
1844GA – 1924OR
Spouse 1: Robert ‘Bob’ Tucker
Spouse 2: William Henry Mayes
The eldest daughter of the family went by the name Susan for the majority of her life and in documents. Her full name may (or may not) have been Mary Ann Susan Elizabeth Lane Stansell. Without intimate knowledge of this family I have to question whether the right parents have been assigned to this person, or if Susan truly had that many given names.
The 1850 census lists the eldest child of Jesse and Martha Jane as “Mary A Stansell, 4” (DOB abt. 1846). She is not listed with them in the 1860 census. At that time they had already moved to Kings River, Madison, Arkansas.
The 1860 of Kings River, Madison, Arkansas lists the household of Robert Tucker, 22, farmer, and his wife Susan Tucker, 15, noted to be married within the year. Their marriage date is given in trees as 15 Jan 1860. He was a son of John A and Lucinda (Arrington) Tucker). They had 12 children born between 1860 and 1882. Bob was a Civil War Soldier serving in the cavalry. Bob died on 9 May 1882 in Madison County, Arkansas at the age of 45. Susan filed for a widow’s pension on 16 June 1882, her name being listed as Susan L. Tucker.
Susan remarried to widower William Henry Mayes about 1895. He died 23 Oct 1900. The 1920 census is the only one listing her with multiple give names: Susan Lane Mays, 75. Susan died on 7 April 1924 in Marble, Madison, Arkansas and was buried at Lower Campground Cemetery in Kingston.

CHILD 3: MARGARET LOLETA STANSELL
1847 GA – 1??? AR
Spouse: John Tucker
Daughter Margaret Loleta Stansell was born in Georgia the day after Christmas on 26 December 1847. She was listed as 2 years old during the 1850 census when the family was still in Mack Cour, Walker County, GA. They moved ti Kings River, Kingston, Madison County, Arkansas by 1860.
On 5 July 1866, Margaret married John Tucker, another son of John Abraham and Lucinda (Arrington) Tucker. He was 5 years older. They had 4 children born between 1867 and 1873. Margaret is not found in the 1880 census with her family. Instead, John has a different wife named Elizabeth. According to a memorial page at Find-a-Grave, she was Elizabeth Wallbern born in Indiana on 26 Oct 1844 and died at 73 on 1 Mar 1918. Elizabeth was buried at Bolinger Cemetery along with John and the Tucker children. No grave info found there for Margaret.
The Caseys’ work on the Tucker families includes mention of a potential divorce between John and Margaret, although no documentation has been found. Further, Margaret may have remarried to a “Mr Simmons.” There is at least one family tree on Ancestry listing the marriage of widower Jordan Banksberry Simmons (23 Jan 1823NC – 26 Apr 1895AR). The Find-a-Grave site has attached info for his second spouse who was buried at Calvalry Cemetery as “Margaret Simmons Oct 5, 1856 – Jan 2, 1907”. Note that the full DOB is completely different than what has been given for Margaret Loleta Stansell on 26 Dec 1847. Even if the year was altered to shave off a few years, one would expect that month and day to match. It does not. There is a marriage record in Franklin, Arkansas for a J B Simmons and Maggie Stancen or Stancer on 27 Oct 1881.
If the above marriage does apply to Margaret Loleta Stansell Tucker, she would have been divorced and still unmarried during the 1880 census. She might be using her Stansell maiden name, or retained Tucker, but there is no obvious census result. All of the children are with their father in 1880 rather than their mother, which is also unusual.

CHILD 4: ELMIRAH JANE STANSELL
1850 GA – 1881-85 AR
Spouse: Hardin Shelton
We are given Elmira Jane Stansell’s birthdate as 15 August 1850 in Georgia. The year matches the 1860 census when she is listed at Kings River, Kingston, Madison County, Arkansas with her parents and siblings. She is not living with them during the 1870 census. According to various trees, her marriage to Hardin (or Harding) Shelton took place about 2 – 3 years earlier. No marriage record found. The couple has also not been located in the 1870 census record during which time they were reportedly still in Arkansas. They had five children born between 1869 and 1879.
The Shelton family moved to Fair View, Labette County, Kansas by 1880 where their livelihood was farming. Elmira was at that time listed by her middle name, Jane. For reasons unknown, they returned to Arkansas where they settled in Hackett, Sebastian County. Elmirah died there between 1881 and 1885.
Hardin appears to have become rather itinerant, which may be why Jane’s DOD or location have not been pinned down. He ended up in Joplin, Jasper, Missori where he married Samantha Brice on 22 Dec 1885. They had 1 daughter, Myrtle born in 1887. Samantha presumably died or divorced him. He again remarried, this time in Johnson, Arkansas to M. J. Farris on 23 Sep 1894 ending either in MJ’s death or a divorce. Next, in Sebastian County, AR, he married a final time to Sarah A. Campbell on 18 Mar 1900.
The 1900 census shows that Hardin owned his own home while working as a day laborer. Sarah died prior to the 1910 census. Hardin went back in Kansas where he remained out of work, doing odd jobs while boarding with a Michael Filwinsky. During the 1920 census, at 75, he was living with his daughter Myrtle Bethune and family in Prairie, Johnson, Arkansas. Hardin died on 9 May 1923.
Death Record: Harden Shelton – male, white, widowed, DOB: 26 Nov 1844 TN, DOD: 9 May 1923.
Occupation: Retired Coal Miner. Parents: James Shelton and Miss Howard. Informant: J.M. Shelton of Midland, Ark.
Social Security data for James Mack Shelton, presumably J. M. Shelton, indicates his parents were: Hardin Shelton and Jane Stancel.

CHILD 5: JOHN ROBERT STANSELL
1852 GA – 1902 AR
Spouse: Gemima Adeline Bolinger
The 25th of January 1852 marked the day of John Robert Stansell’s birth in Georgia. He was eight years old during the 1860 census of Kings River, Kingston, Madison County, Arkansas, the first taken after his family’s move. At 18, he was still living at home with his parents and likely working on the farm. John married Gemima Adeline Bolinger on 15 Feb 1877. Eight children have been identified for their family born between 1878 and 1901.
By the 1900 census, Gemima had given birth to 6 children, only 5 of whom were living.
Initially, they lived in Kings River, Madison, AR where the 1880 census notes John was working as a farmer. At that time they were listed with their son, W. O., 1 year old, and daughter, A. N., aged 5 months. They moved to Goodwill, Madison, AR by the time of the 1900 census. John worked in farming, but noted to have been not employed for 1 month out of the year. They were renting their home that year.
The Act of 20 May 1862 resulted in John R Stansell being issued Homestead Entry No. 14544 containing 160 acres. They were not settled long before he died on 12 July 1902 at 50 years of age. He was buried at the Bolinger Cemetery in Madison County. Gemima remarried to Frank M Reeves about 1906. He was a farmer. They farmed land he rented in 1910. At that time only two of the younger children were living with them, Emma, 12, and Asberry, 9. The census notes that Gemima had given birth to 7 children, only 6 of whom were then living.
During the 1920 census, Frank and Gemima Reeves were living in Purdy, Madison, AR. Frank was 76 and still working as a general farmer, but they owned their home. Gemima was 59. Only Asberry, now 18, remained at home. The 1830 census listed Frank, 84, Gemima as ‘Adeline’ and widowed daughter Annie N Boatright, 50 and her two children, Loraine, 14, and Bruce, 11. By this time, Frank has retired. He has no listed occupation. The census also notes that ‘Adeline’ was 16 at the time of her first marriage.
Frank Reeves died on 9 July 1930. Gemima lived another 24 years. Her death came on 3 Oct 1954 at the age of 93. She died in Springdale, Washington, Arkansas. During the 1850 census, Gemima, then 89, was living in the household of her widowed granddaughter, Lorraine (Boatright) Moore and family.

CHILD 6: MARTHA FRANCES STANSELL
1853 GA – 1896 AR
Spouse: John Wesely Rollins
Independence Day, 4 July 1853, was Martha Frances Stancell’s birth date. Her family was still living in Walker County, Georgia. By the 1860 census they had settled in Kings River, Kingston, Madison County, Arkansas. She was still at home during the 1870 census at 17 years of age, but married two years later on 11 Aug 1872 to John Wesley Rollins. During his parents’ generation he used the Rawlings variant of the name. They moved west to Summerville, Union, Oregon where John continued to work as a farmer. They did not remain there very long. Only three of their children are documented as being born in Oregon. The family returned to Arkansas where it continued to grow to include three boys and six girls born between 1873 and 1891.
Martha passed away on 28 February 1896 at the age of only 42. Her youngest was only about 5 years old at the time. She is buried at Berryville Memorial Cemetery in Carroll County, Arkansas. John remarked on 12 Oct 1899 in Madison County, AR to Lou Ida Keck. They had a son and daughter born 1902 and 1905 respectively. They lived in Arkansas through the 1910 census, but sometime prior to 1920 removed to Cove, Union, Oregon. John died in LaGrande, Union, Oregon on 7 April 1925 at 73 years of age. Ida survived him by 42 years. Her death came in 1967.

CHILD 8: NANCY ‘ELIZA’ STANSELL
1856 GA – 1878 OR
Spouse: James M Sutherland
The 1860 census of Kings River listed daughter Nancy as 5 years old. In 1870, still listed as Nancy, she is 14 years of age. A gravestone reads “Eliza N wife of J.M. Sutherland died Oct. 11, 1878 aged 25 yrs, 2ms & 7 days.” A birthdate calculation tool computed her DOB as 4 August 1853.
James M Sutherland had been previously married to Sarah J Wood on 18 Feb 1867 in Franklin, AR. They had one son, John Franklin Sutherland. Sarah either died or divorced him. On Feb 1874 in Madison, AR, James married again. This time to Nancy Eliza Stansell. They had three children: Ida, Martha, and Jesse. Their son Jesse died within days of his mother. He was just over a year old. They are buried at Summerville Cemetery in Union County, Oregon.
With two young daughters, James Sutherland married again. The 1880 census lists him as a grocer. He married prior to the census on 16 May 1880 to Louise Evelyn Austin. They had a large family of 5 sons and 4 daughters. Louise died on 4 May 1920 at 58 years old.
When he was 78, widower James Sutherland married again to Alice Harriet ‘Hattie’ (Hammond) Anchor. She had been married twice before to Eben Fox and John Anchor. Hattie and James married in Alameda, California on 19 July 1922. James’ residence was listed as Union, OR. He lived only a year after their marriage dying on 9 Oct 1923. Hattie settled in Redding, Shasta, California. She died there on 11 Jun 1940.

CHILD 12: CORDELIA HOWELL L STANSELL
1863 AR – 1876 OR
Died Young
Cordelia was born on 9 August 1863 in Arkansas. Probably the youngest child of the family. She was 7 during the 1870 census of Kings River, Madison, AR. The family moved to Oregon settling on a farm in Summerville, Union County. She died there on 1 October 1876 at the age of 13. She is buried at Summerville Cemetery.

CHILD 13: UNIDENTIFIED STANSELL
Presumably bet. 1843 GA – 1865
Presumably died young
This child is inferred by the data provided in the 1900 census listing Martha as having given birth to 13 children. The confusion over Mary Ann Stansell vs. Elizabeth Susan Lane Stansell may be where this missing child comes in.

The following is a comprehensive list of recommended research resources, reading materials, and citations (primary and secondary sources) for Martha Jane Guthrey (born 19 May 1820 in Georgia, died 1905 in Imbler or Union County, Oregon) and her husband Jesse Howell Stansell (born 4 May 1823 in North Carolina, died 17 May 1886 in Summerville, Union County, Oregon). They married on 14 February 1843 in Georgia.
This list draws from genealogical databases, family history blogs, vital records repositories, census data, military/pension records, and cemetery records. It includes both primary sources (e.g., original records like censuses, marriages, deaths, pensions) and reliable secondary sources (e.g., compiled family trees with citations, blogs summarizing research). The couple resided in Walker County, Georgia (1850s); Madison County, Arkansas (1860s–1870s); and Union County, Oregon (1880s onward). They had numerous children (at least 14, including sons William Levi, John Robert, James Henry, Jesse Richard, George Wesley, and daughters like Elizabeth Susan Lane, Martha Frances, etc.).
The primary dedicated source is the detailed profile on the Guthrie Genealogy blog, which compiles many records.
