ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG6 – BRANCH C

James Guthrie was possibly the orphaned son of Thomas Guthrie who lived in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and was listed in the 1800 census for Muncy Creek, but not listed in 1810. Thomas was 45 or older in 1800, so his DOB would be before 1755. He appears to have been living with his wife and a son and daughter under 10 years of age.

In 1811, James Guthrie is noted to be living in Muncy Township in the role of an indentured servant and run away, so the lack of a father would make sense.

James Guthrie’s parents were definitely not Robert Guthrie & Ruth Roberts or William Guthrie & Elizabeth Guthrie as found in some online trees. Both of those couples originate with GFG2A and are not genetically related to this Guthrie Family Group (GFG6).

James G Guthrie is a prospective child of James P Guthrie & Martha Fansey. He is living in the right place at the right time to be one of the unidentified children. One of his sons is belongs to GFG6, which would make James G Guthrie an inferred GFG6 match.

James was born in Williamsport, Lycoming, PA in Feb 1825. He was twice married. First to Susan M Wolf by whom he had 5 children. When Susan died about 1874 the two youngest children were adopted out of the family. James remarried to Catherine Barker. He died 29 July 1901 in Wallaceton, Clearfield, PA.

GEORGE W GUTHRIE
1836PA – 1904PA

George W Guthrie was born about 1836 in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He and his family are next door to that of Thomas Guthrie during the 1860 census, so it is presumed that George W Guthrie is also a son of James and Martha (Fansey) Guthrie. I cannot find the family listed in the 1850 census, so it may be that there are other children who were born between Joseph and George.

George Guthrie married Delilah Cable. They lived in Nippenose and appear to have had 2 children: Anna and Franklin. There is a Sarah Guthrie (wife or sister?) living with him in Nippenose in 1870, but in 1880 George is listed as single. He died 21 April 1904 in Lycoming County.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1795: FORMATION of LYCOMING COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA

Lycoming County was formed from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania on 13 April 1795. It took up most of North Central Pennsylvania and would later be divided to form Armstrong, Bradford, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Indiana, Jefferson, McKean, Potter, Sullivan, Tioga, Venango, Warren, Forest, Elk, and Cameron. The county also went through several name changes starting with Jefferson County, then Lycoming, then Susquehanna, then Muncy, and back to Lycoming.

1800: US CENSUS of PENNSYLVANIA
Muncy Creek, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, USA

Thos. Guthrie Household: 1M & 1F 45 and over (born before 1755), 1M & 1F under 10 (1791-1800).

This is the possible family of James Guthrie who would be the boy under 10 years of age. Thomas Guthrie was the only Guthrie named as a Head of Household for Lycoming County in 1800. There are none listed for 1810, and James is the only one listed for 1820.

Since it appears that Thomas Guthrie probably died before 1810 leaving his son, James Guthrie, an orphan, he was possibly assigned as an indentured servant for an unknown number of years.

Findings:

Our participant has a Y37 marker kit. He matches Group Mode DNA results at 34/37.

DYS439 = 12 instead of 11. He shares this marker with Kit 235133 (GFG6 – Branch H).

DYS456 – 17 instead of 18. Another fast-moving marker with multiple changes across the group. Several have the result of 17, but ranges 16 – 19. Others with the value of 17 are Kits 578951 (GFG6-Branch E), 265262 (GFG6 – Branch G), 251848 (GFG6 – Branch J).

CDYi = 35 instead of 34. This variance is unique to the participant.

  1. Hi, I am the sister of participant 273990 and have additional information for you. James P. Guthrie was a policeman, who died in the line of duty in Jersey Shore ( or so the story goes) he was pursuing a desperado when he was killed. We believe the year was 1847, but cannot find anything to collaborate that date. He was a large man and at least 6’3″. It is very likely he was also a lumberman and logger at some point. This story has been passed down to us from Anna May GUTHRIE Straight, daughter of Joseph Jones GUTHRIE. Peggy Guthrie

I also have the obituary for Martha Fansey Guthrie, wife of James P. A fun tidbit is that Martha smoked a pipe!
