ORIGIN THEORIES
This Guthrie family has a great advantage over many others in that is has a documented connection to its roots in Ayrshire, Scotland. William Guthrie lived in Ayrshire, Scotland his entire life. Our project participant’s line immigrated to New Zealand. Genetic testing reveals a common direct paternal ancestor between this Scotland-New Zealand family and multiple American lineages descending from Francis Guthrie, Sr. within Guthrie Family Group 3A.
The 1771 census of Dundonald, Ayrshire lists William Guthrie’s age as 70 making his estimated DOB 1771. This date may be off by as many as 9 years. The census also lists him with his son James Guthrie, whose full DOB is known. He is listed as 35 instead of 44.
Recent research has expanded William Guthrie’s theoretical family tree. The only red flag appears to be that birth date. Was he indeed born about 1771? If the DOB was actually off by 9 years, his DOB would be closer to 1762. Other documentation and newspaper articles suggest that William Guthrie was the son of George Guthrie & Margaret Bowie born in 1763 in Craigie, Ayrshire. George was the son of John Guthrie & Janet Howie, and John was the son of George Guthrie (1660-1712) & Isobald Hewie.
These also happen to be the ancestors of Alexander Guthrie of Mount. If the family theory is correct, William Guthrie 1763-1844 would be his uncle. The matriculation of arms document for Alexander’s daughter Christina Guthrie indicates that her father is ‘believed to be’ paternally descended from Rev John Guthrie, Minister of Tarbolton, who was the youngest son of the Laird of Pitforthie. John was living in Ayrshire at about the right time to be father to George Guthrie (1660-1712), but there is no known documentation as to whether or not Rev John Guthrie and his wife Mary Haldane had any children.
See the Guthrie Genealogy blog entry: GFG3 Theories – Part 1 for a detailed description.

NOTES:
Searching for William Guthrie’s parents. Based on naming patters, it seems probable that his father’s name was George Guthrie. Not only did he name his eldest son George Guthrie, but at George’s death in 1800, he then used the name for his eldest son with 2nd wife Jacobina McClure. It could be that he was just naming the second one after the first child.
Although the 1841 Scotland Census lists William Guthrie as 70 years of age, making his DOB about 1771, there is a discrepancy with the age listed for son James, whose known DOB should have made him 44 rather the the 35 listed. This suggests that William’s age could also be off by as much as 9-10 years.
Casting a wide range for estimated DOB to sons born to men named George Guthrie, there are 4 born in Scotland between 1750-1775.
- George Guthrie (transcribed as Guthrie) in Dumbfries abt. 23 Jul 1752. No mother listed.
- George Guthrie in Sidehead, Craigie, Ayrshire abt 27 Feb 1763. No mother listed.
- George Guthrie in Thornyside, Ochiltree, Ayrshire abt 11 Jul 1768. No mother listed.
- George Guthrie & Elizabeth Goldie in Edinburgh on 18 Jul 1769.
The two in Ayrshire seem like the best candidates since William’s children were born in Mauchline and Dundonald. However, we do not have a marriage record for him and his first wife Ann Hunter that identifies where William was living prior to that marriage.
If naming patterns do not apply in this case, there were 8 infants named William Guthrie born in Ayrshire between 1750-1775.
Before any official determine can be made, we need some genetic clues. Ideally, a YDNA match to a collateral line that confirms the parent generation.
GUTHRIE CHILDREN: 11 (6 + 5)
Y-DNA Project Participants: Yes
Autosomal DNA Participants: Yes
CHILD 1: GEORGE GUTHRIE
1788 SCT – 1800 SCT
Died Young
Son of William Guthrie & Ann Hunter. No birth/baptismal record was found in the Ayrshire records. George Guthrie died aged 12 on 20 Oct 1800 in Dundonald and is buried at the Dundonald Churchyard with his mother, Ann, who died the following year.
Dundonald Mortality Register – Anno 1800:
Guthrie: George son William Guthrie tenant in Harperland and Ann hunter spouses was interred at Dundonald in the twenty third day of October Ad Eighteen hundred.

CHILD 2: JOHN GUTHRIE (Militia Captain / Farmer)
1790 SCT – 1834 SCT
Partner: Janet Lenox
Spouse: Isabella Tennant
Son of William Guthrie & Ann Hunter. John Guthrie was born 10 Feb 1790 and baptized 15 Feb 1790 at Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland.
It is believed that this John Guthrie is the man living in Turnberry, Ayrshire, who had a ‘natural’ son with Janet Lenox. The boy was named John Guthrie and was born at Affee the 26th April 1819 and baptized at Therhowale on 20 July 1819 in Kirkoswald.
Dramatically, just a day after the boy’s birth, John Guthrie in Kirkoswald Parish and Isabella Tennant in Girvan Parish were married at Girvan mains 27 April 1819.
The reason this John Guthrie has been selected as the likely son of William Guthrie and Ann Hunter is that one of their three daughters is names “Ann Hunter Guthrie”.
John Guthrie was a militia captain and farmer residing in Turnberry. “Captain John Guthrie from Turnberry Lodge, a mid aged man” died on 24 January 1834. in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire, Scotland. He is buried with his daughter, Margaret.

The entry immediately prior to this one lists Susan Good’s daughter, Susan, born 1812, but does not specifically name the father. Unknown if also William Guthrie. So far, Autosomal DNA testing shows only matches to other descendants of brother James Guthrie, but not to any other known GFG3A lines.
William remained unmarried. He died on 26 Mar 1856 in Dundonald.

The widower George Johnston remarried to a Jane Smith in Kilwinning on 12 June 1836 and recorded on 14 June 1836 in Kilmarnock.. She also appears to have died prior to the 1841 census. He was a chemist, born on 17 Nov 1802, son of William Rankin, a clockmaker and/or chemist, and Agnes Dove. (Note that trees have have attached the wrong William Rankin to Jacobina Guthrie.) They are listed in the 1841 census of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland and the 1851 and 1871 census of Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Their eldest son, William G Rankin, immigrated to New Zealand when he was 18, in 1853. The majority of William and Jacobina’s children died before reaching adulthood, several of pulmonary consumption in their late teens. Jacobina’s husband, William Rankin, died in Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland on 7 May 1880. Afterward, Jacobina, along with her only surviving child left in Scotland, left for New Zealand. There is a Passenger list dated 1881 for the ship Garonne arriving in Australia that includes Scottish passengers Mrs Jacobina Rankine, 69, and Mr Robt. Rankin, 29. Presumably, they caught another ship to New Zealand. Son Robert died in November of that year.
Jacobina Guthrie Rankin is documented in the cemetery records for Addington, Christchurch City, Canterbury, New Zealand., aged 80. Birth date about 1810, death date 3 May 1890. Findings:
Our Y-DNA participant has tested at the Y111 level. His results are a match for the remainder of the GFG3A group, but he does have some variances compared to the rest of the others. Both he and the autosomal kits have recent ties to Scotland and/or New Zealand, so it is likely that the most recent common ancestors between this branch and the other GFG3A branches is more distant. He matches the Group Mode DNA at 106/111.
New genetic genealogy tools for Big-Y testing now provide visual results showing the points in the timeline where individual branches within each group diverged. The most recent common ancestor between GFG3A – Branch A and Branch B lived around 1450-1500. If you are a Guthrie DNA Project member at FTDNA sign in to view the Group Time Tree for GFG3A.
