His obituary reads: Daniel Walker, one of the best known farmers of the Bruin district, died at his home at 10:15 Thursday morning from the weaknesses due to advanced age. Mr Walker was born in Moy, Tyrone county, Ireland, in 1827 and came to this country when he was 21 years old, locating at Miller’s Eddy. He spent all his life on the farm and was widely known throughout the northeastern portion of Butler county. He held a number of important township offices, and his judgment and loyalty to the interests of the people were held in high estimation. In 1860 Mr Walker was united in marriage with Anna Guthrie, who with five sons and four daughters survives. The children are the following: William, Gorge, Samuel, John, and James, all living in the Bruin district; Mrs Perry Snow of Bruin, Mrs Silas Heyl and Mrs Oliver Heyl of Petrolia and Mrs John Brady of Metz, W. Va. Deceased was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian Church at Fairview. The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock and will be conducted by Rev. Frank Campbell, pastor of the United Presbyterian church. Burial will be made in Bear creek cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Walker celebrated their golden wedding three years ago.

Farming might have been the legacy for future generations of Walkers if not for the 1872 strike of the “Fanny Jane” giving birth to a rapidly growing Oil Industry within Bear Creek Valley and the naming of its new town, Petrolia. (See Reading and Resources for background on the booming oil town.)

CHILD 1: WILLIAM GUTHRIE WALKER 1861 PA – 1942 PA
William Guthrie Walker was born in Parker, Butler County, Pennsylvania on 6 May 1861, the eldest child of Daniel and Ann Eliza (Guthrie) Walker. “He was educated in the public schools and at Grove City College. On March 15, 1886, he married Lizzie J., a daughter of William and Nancy J. Kelly, of Parker township, and has three children, viz.: Lillie May; Lena Bell, and Charles Roland. In 1891 he located upon his present farm, containing 100 acres, and is one of the progressive young farmers of the community. He is an ardent Republican, is quite active in politics, and has served as inspector of elections.” (Source: History of Butler County, Pennsylvania, 1895, pp.1330-1331)

After the book’s publication of the biographical sketch on William G. Guthrie, his family continued to grow. He and Lizzie had two more children: Anna Jane and Margaret. They continued to live in Butler County. Both William and Lizzie died in 1942. William’s death occurred on 15 January 1942. They are both buried at Bear Creek Cemetery in Petrolia.

CHILD 2: MARGARET JANE ‘JENNIE’ WALKER 1862 PA – 1942PA
Margaret Jane Walker was born on 29 August 1862 in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Known as ‘Jennie’, she resided in Pennsylvania throughout her life. On 18 March 1896, at the age of 33, Jennie married John ‘Perry’ Snow. He was a son of Thomas and Fanny (Byers) Snow. He was a day laborer. The 1920 census lists him as an invalid. He died that year on 24 May 1920. Widowed, Jennie made her home with her brother, George Walker. They were enumerated in the 1930 census where she presumably kept house for him. Jennie died of congestive heart failure on 8 Nov. 1942 at 80 years of age.

Born in Butler County, Pennsylvania on 11 April 1864 George Elmer Walker remained a bachelor throughout his life there. In his youth he worked as a farm hand. After his education was complete he worked as a school teacher. In his fifties he was a farmer again. His widowed sister Jennie moved in after Perry Snow’s death. She predeceased him by two years. George died on 6 January 1944 and is buried with the family in Petrolia at Bear Creek Cemetery.

CHILD 4: SAMUEL ROBERT WALKER 1865 PA – 1937 PA
The third son in the family, Samuel Robert Walker was born in Parker, Butler, PA on 25 September 1865. During his youth he worked as a farm hand, most likely on his father’s farm before becoming a farmer in his own right. He married Margaret ‘Maggie’ Frances Twaddle, the Daughter of James and Sarah (Sylvia) Twaddle on 27 Nov 1888. They resided on their farm in Parker, Butler, Pennsylvania where they raided a family of 5 sons and 1 daughter. Both Samuel and Maggie died in 1937. He died on 28 Feb with gastric cancer, and she died 26 Aug of a coronary occlusion. They are buried at Bear Creek Cemetery.

1) Wesley Daniel Walker (28 Dec 1889 PA – 18 Nov 1966 PA)
Wesley Daniel Walker was initially listed as Daniel W during the 1900 census, so the name might actually have been reversed when he was named at birth on 28 Dec 1889. At the age of 20 years old, Wesley was working as an oil well pumper. Ten years later he is his own boss working as an oil well producer. He married when he was 23 to Gertrude M Vogt on 14 July 1913. On 5 Jun 1917, Wesley signed up for the WWI draft, describing his occupation as an oil producer, pumper, & bookkeeper. He did claim an exemption. In addition to his wife he claimed a “heavy fire ___ obligation”, which may have had to do with oil production. They had 1 daughter, Frances, born in 1918. The family made their home in Bruin, Butler, PA. Gertrude died in 1962. At 76 years of age, Wesley was a pedestrian crossing a street when he was struck by a car and suffered a massive skull fracture and other broken bones. His death was reported as instantaneous. He died on 18 Nov 1966. He is buried at North Cemetery in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

2) James ‘Clarence’ Walker (20 Oct 1891 PA – 14 Sep 1958 PA)
Clarence seems to be another son who preferred to go by his middle name. He was born on 20 October 1891 in Bruin, Butler, Pennsylvania. He spent time as a general laborer and entered the Oil Industry as a driller. He was a WWI Veteran having served in the US Army in Battery F, 323rd Light Field Artillery unit as a Private First Class from his enlistment on 24 Dec 1917 to discharge at Fort Dix, NJ on 27 May 1918. He married Sarah Jane Kelly, otherwise known as ‘Sadie’ during the early 1920s. They had 1 daughter: Betty (1926). During the 1930s he was working as a filterer at the oil refinery. He was the foreman during the 1950s. A cerebral hemorrhage caused his death at 66 years of age on 14 Sep 1958 in Oakland, Butler, Pennsylvania. Sadie survived him by 6 years. She died on 23 Dec 1964. They are buried at Bear Creek Cemetery.

3) Ralph Herbert Walker (4 Dec 1894 PA – 27 Dec 1952 OH)
Ralph Herbert Guthrie is the first of this family to move away from Butler County, Pennsylvania. He was born on 4 December 1894 in Bruin. Like his brothers, he started out in the oil business and found his niche as a “tool dentist”. This may have led him to his role as an auto mechanic and crane operator. Ralph enlisted in Company L of the 16th Infantry, Private First Class on 5 April 1917. He married Pauline Georgia Baldwin, daughter of George and Sarah Georgia (Kepler) Baldwin, in Wellsburg, Brooke, West Virginia on 22 Dec 1919. They had 2 children: Jane (1921) and Robert George (1923). Ralph also signed up for the WWII draft. He was living in Toledo, Lucas, Ohio at the time, his closest relative being his wife, Pauline. In his fifties, he worked a less physical job as a mail order clerk for an auto manufacturer. Pauline was an employment manager. Ralph died on 27 Dec 1952.

4) Edna B Walker (25 Jan 1898 PA – 3 Jun 1986)
Edna was 2 years old at the turn of the century during the 1900 census. She had been born in Parker, Butler, PA on 25 January 1898. Her marriage to Henry Bernard Johnson occurred during the mid-1920s. They had three children: Sigrid (1924), Patricia Ann (1928), and John Henry (1929). Born in New Jersey, Henry was the son of Axel O and Catherine (McDonough) Johnson. He was a pharmacist and also served in the Army during WWI. Henry died on 23 Oct 1964 of colon cancer and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Edna lived another 22 years. She died on 3 June 1986 at 88 years of age, and was buried in the same location.

5) Edward ‘Dale’ Walker (18 Apr 1902 PA – 1981 PA)
Born on 18 April 1902 in Bruin, Butler, Pennsylvania, Dale was the first of the Walker family born in the 20th Century. He married Ella Priscilla Sherwin on 23 June 1928. During the 1830 census, he was working as an oil well pumper. Dale and Ella had 2 children: Edwin Dale (1933) and Rosella Jean (1936). By 1950 he had his own business in Oil Production pumping oil. He died in Karns City, Butler, PA on 26 May 1981. Ella died in 2001.

6) Theodore Roosevelt Walker (19 Jul 1907 PA – 21 Oct 1953 PA)
The youngest of Samuel and Maggie’s children, Theodore Roosevelt Walker was born on 19 July 1907. Guess who was in the White House at the time… ‘Teddy’, of course. Theodore Walker went into the oil business like the rest of his brothers. He worked in the refinery as a laborer, was a laboratory worker, and then an oil producer. He married Aletha LaVaun Ellenburn in the 1930s. LaVaun had attended college for 2 years and was a Primary Grade School Teacher. They had two daughters: Vonda Lee (1936) and Sandra (1942).

CHILD 5: NANCY ‘ALICE’ WALKER
The second daughter of Daniel and Ann Eliza (Guthrie) Walker was Nancy Alice, born on 16 May 1867. At 20 years old, on 19 April 1888, she married Silas L Hiles, a son of Chambers and Margaret (Shakely) HIles. They settled in Perry, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Silas was a farmer, but also took work as a contractor for oil rig building. Silas and Alice had 4 children. At 70 years of age, on 24 Jan 1936, Silas died and Alice carried on at the farm. She died on 10 March 1950. They are both buried at Bear Creek Cemetery in Butler County where many of the Walker family also have their final resting place.

1) James Monroe Hiles (21 Feb 1889 PA – 3 Dec 1961 PA)
Born in Perry, Armstrong, Pennsylvania, James Monroe Hiles was the eldest son of Silas and Nancy Alice (Walker) Hiles. He worked as a farm laborer in his youth, probably on the family farm. James married Nellie Elizabeth Barger on 18 Jan 1923 in Kittanning, Armstrong, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Saray (Snow) Barger. James’ next job recorded on the census records was as a tool dresser for the oil industry. Nellie kept house for their increasingly growing family. They had 8 children: Alice Mae (1923), Charles Lincoln (1925), Frances Genevieve (1927), Kathryn ‘Leila’ (1928), Laura Elizabeth (1931), James Monroe (1933), [Living Dau.] (1937), and Calvin Dean (1938). James Monroe Hiles Sr died on 3 December 1961 in Perry, Armstrong, PA. He was 72. Nellie died in 1973.

3) Anna Margaret Hiles (25 Jan 1892 PA – 18 Aug 1973 PA)
The only daughter of the family, Anna Margaret Hiles was born on 25 Jan 1892 in Petrolia, Butler, Pennsylvania. In the early to mid 1920s she married Clarence B Wilkison, a son of Frank and Dorothy (Boring) Wilkison. He was employed as a steel worker and later as a railroad repairman and car repairman for the railroad. Anna kept house for the family. They lived in various location in Pennsylvania, presumably associated with Clarence’s railroad work. Their children were: Emma Mae (1926), Ina M (1927), Silas Emert (1928), and Lois Lucille (1931). Their only son, Silas, died of pneumonia at only 3 years of age in 1931. Clarence predeceased his wife. He died on 11 March 1967 in Johnstown, Cambria, Pennsylvania. Anna lived another six years, her death occurring on 18 August 1973 in Robinson. Burial occurred in Bear Creek Cemetery in Petrolia.

The youngest of the bunch, William Orr Hiles was born on 22 Feb 1893. He never married and continued to live and work on the farm. He signed up for the WWI Draft and listed no exceptions. He was 24 and 4/12 years old upon his induction to the Army serving overseas from 28 Oct 1918 to 16 July 1919 in the 136th Transportation Company. He was honorably discharged at demobilization on 23 July 1919. William died on 30 May 1961 and is buried at Bear Creek Cemetery in Petrolia.

CHILD 6: ANNA MAY WALKER
Born on 25 Sep 1868, Anna May Walker would live in Butler County, Pennsylvania throughout her lifetime. She married on 5 Sep 1894 to Oliver Hiles, the brother of Silas Hiles who had married her sister Nancy ‘Alice’, sons of Chambers and Margaret (Shakley) Hiles. Oliver started out as a farm laborer and supplemented his income with carpentry in the Oil Well industry. He and Anna had 2 sons: Robert McKinley (1896) and Roland English (1900). Oliver was only 48 at his death on 30 Dec 1920 in Perry, Armstrong, PA. Anna lived another 45 years dying of pneumonia at the age of 96 in Karns City, Butler, PA. She is buried at Bear Creek in Petrolia.

1) Robert McKinley Hiles (9 Dec 1896 PA – 6 Jan 1977 PA)
The oldest of two sons, Robert McKinley Hiles was only 21 at the time of the WWI Draft. He served with Co. H of the 145th Infantry as a private and was discharged on 9 April 1919 in Ohio. He was an oil worker. About 1920, he married Zelma Young with whom he had 1 daughter and 3 sons: Lucile (1921), Robert (1923), Richard (1924), and Gerald Wayne (1926). Robert also signed up for the WWII Draft in 1942. Zelma died in 1965, and Robert in 1977.

2) Roland English Hiles (13 Apr 1900 PA – 28 May 1930 PA)
Roland seems to have started and ended as a farmer. He was born on 13 April 1900 in Perry, Armstrong, PA and died there on 28 May 1930. Between those dates, he married Mildred Mary Bishop bet. 1920-1922, and they raised 4 children: Margaret Ruth (1922), Helen Jean (1923), Roland Oliver (1925), and Stanley Clayton (1927). Roland was only 30 at the time of his death. He died an acute strep infection in his shoulder. Mildred remained on the farm with her sons at least through the 1950 census. She was 99 years old at her death on 25 Feb 2001 in Butler, PA.

CHILD 8: JOHN STORY WALKER
John Story Walker was born on 31 January 1872 in Parker, Butler, Pennsylvania. He initially worked on the farm and then got into the oil production business. On 31 July 1902, John married Elizabeth Blanche Twaddle. She was a daughter of James and Sarah (Sylvia) Twaddle, and sister to Maggie who married John’s older brother Samuel. They lived in Bruin raising their children. Elizabeth died in 1943. John was 85 at his death on 31 March 1957 caused by a coronary embolism. He was laid to rest at Bear Creek Cemetery.

After his marriage to Dorothy, Richard was working as a “stillman”, but afterward in oil production. He served in the Navy during WWII. Richard died 20 April 1988 and his widow Dorothy in 2001.

CHILD 9: LULA MAY WALKER
Lulu or Lula May Walker was born September of 1873 in Butler County, Pennsylvania. She married John Pedro Brady on 27 Oct 1897. He was an oil producer in the Oil & Gas Industry. Unlike Lula’s brothers who remained in Pennsylvania, the Brady family moved to Ohio by 1900, West Virginia by 1910, and then settled in Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas.

Theodore died in 1963 and Bertha thirty years later on 7 Sep 1994 in Independence, Kansas.

2) Ralph Jerome Brady (6 Nov 1901 OH – 10 Jan 1997 IL)
Ralph was born in Antioch, Monroe, Ohio on 6 Nov 1901, the eldest son of John Pedro and Lula May (Walker) Brady. He moved with them as a child to Marion County, West Virginia, and then on to Independence, Kansas. He was employed in the Oil and Gas industry intially as a pumper and later worked his way up to the supervisor role. Ralph remained single. Sometime after the 1950 census, he moved to Chicago, Cook, Illinoi where he died on 10 January 1997. He is buried back in Kansas at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.

3) Fred Daniel Brady (9 Dec 1905 WV – 26 May 1996 OK) m. Verna Alice Perkins
The youngest member of the Brady family was born in Salem, Harrison, West Virginia, His father was employed as a driller in the oil fields at the time they resided there. They moved on by 1920 to Montgomery County, Kansas eventually settling in Independence. The oil industry was a major employer, and Fred found work as pumper. He married Verna Alice Perkins when he was 28 years old on 3 November 1934. Fred and his wife were living in Oklahoma either by the time he married, or no later than 1935. They had one daughter born in 1939. Verna died in 1986 and Fred in 1996. They are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.

CHILD 10: JAMES MONROE WALKER
James Monroe Walker was born on 2 July 1875 in Butler County, Pennsylvania, the youngest son of Daniel and Ann Eliza (Guthrie) Walker. He married Blanche E Way, daughter of Jefferson Lincoln and Mary Margaret Way. They lived in Parker, Butler, Pennsylvania where Blanche was a homemaker and James worked in the oil fields as a pumper. They had two sons, Paul Eugene (1916) and Dean Edward (1917). Blanche died first on 31 Jan 1956. James died 4 April 1965 in Armstrong County, PA of a sudden cerebral vascular accident and was buried at Bear Creek Cemetery.

Born in Bruin, Butler, Pennsylvania, Paul was a mechanic in the automotive industry. He married Leah Marie Shaffer. They were parents to 4 sons and 3 daughters, including 1 infant son who died during a premature birth. In 1972, Paul and Leah moved to Florida. Leah died in Zellwood, Orange, Florida on 14 April 1992, and Paul none years later on 30 April 2001.

2) Dean Edward Walker (23 Oct 1917 PA – 28 Aug 1988 PA) m. Francis ‘Margaret’ Monroe +child
Dean was born in Bruin, Butler, Pennsylvania and lived there most of his life. He was a laborer in the Oil Industry, worked in the Oil Refinery as a Laboratory Technician, among his roles. He was working for the Ultra Penn. Refining Company in Bruin, when he completed his WWII Draft Card. Dean entered active Army service on 22 April 1941 and served both domestically and abroad from that time until his discharge from active service on 9 Nov 1945 at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. He had served as a sergeant in the Panamal Canal Zone. After his separation from active duty, Dean later worked as a quality-assurance representative with the U.S. Department of Defense. His marriage to Francis ‘Margaret’ Monroe came later in life. He was 47 when they married on 5 Aug 1965 in Winchester, Virginia. The couple had one daughter. Dean retired in 1975, but maintained oil wells in northern Butler County. He suffered injuries in a oil-line explosion five days prior to his demise at the burn unit of West Penn Hospital. His wife had died the previous year, and they are buried at Bear Creek Cemetery in Petrolia.

CHILD 11: LILLIAN M WALKER
Daughter Lillie was the youngest Walker born in September of 1876 iN Parker, Butler, Pennsylvania. She was 24 at her marriage to Edward Jennings Mildren. He was an oil producer and employed others in the industry. Lillie died only 2 years into the marriage. No children are documented for the couple. Edward remarried on 3 Jun 1906 in Washington, Ohio to Harriet Margaret Switzer. They had 3 daughter and 1 son born between 1908 and 1919. Hattie died there in 1929 and Edward in 1955. Lillian is buried at Brady’s Bend Cemetery in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

On April 1st of 1872, the “Fanny Jane” Well was struck, thus giving birth to a new town called Petrolia.  Petrolia soon proved to be one of the many oil boomtowns in the lower region of the Pennsylvania Oil Region.  With that, this “…new and rich strike was sufficient incentive to set a number of people to building, and with the mush-room like growth, only known in oil and mining regions, a village was formed in the little valley of Bear Creek.” (History of Butler County Pennsylvania 1883, 134)
