ELIZABETH GUTHRIE 1782NC – 1830-40IL & ROBERT PATTON
of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Illinois, USA

ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
Parents: James Guthrie c1720IRE – 1801NC & Elizabeth (MNU)
Birth: 1782 (Find-a-Grave lists her DOB as 1785, but there is no marker for verification)
Birth Location: Orange County, North Carolina, USA
Marriage: 28 July 1803 in Orange County, North Carolina, USA
Death: 1838 (Source: Find-a-Grave). Between 1830-1840
Death Location: Equality, Gallatin County, Illinois, USA
Burial Location: Angleton-Patton Cemetery at Rock Creek, Hardin County, IL
Notes:
Elizabeth Guthrie was only 19 and still unmarried at her father’s death in 1801. To her he bequeathed, “one feather bed and furniture and flax wheel and saddle and also a horse and two cows at her marriage or my wife’s death.” On 28 July 1803, Elizabeth married Robert Patton. Their bondsman was William Smith. The Pattons moved to the Robertson, TN area between 1805-1809 and from there settled in Gallatin County, Illinois between 1814-1818 raising 10 children.
ROBERT PATTON
Parents: Andrew Patton 1740PA-1790NC & Margaret McCollister (Unverified – Source: Online Family Trees Only)
Birth: abt. 1780 (Census Estimates list 1770-80 and 1780-90, so 1780 is the common result)
Birth Location: Orange County, North Carolina, USA (Unverified)
Occupation: Unknown
Possible 2nd Marriage: Harriet Brown probably between 1830-1840
Death: 4 February 1843
Death Location: Equality, Gallatin County (Now Hardin County, IL)
Notes:
Several online trees list the parents of Robert Patton as Andrew Patton and Margaret McCollister. I have found no verifiable document to prove this relationship. Anyone? A descendant had indicated to me that after Elizabeth’s death between 1830-1840, Robert Patton remarried to a Harriet Brown. If so, I cannot find a marriage record or any other documentation to verify it. The only clue is found in the 1840 census when the wife of Robert Patton is listed as 30-40 years old at a time when Elizabeth would be about 58 if alive.
CHIILDREN: 10
ANDREW PATTON
1805NC-1866IL
The fact that the eldest son is named Andrew makes a good case for the identity of Robert Patton’s father. First sons are frequently named after the father’s father. Except that there is no other indication that a naming pattern was used here. Andrew was born on 22 August 1805 in North Carolina. He married Eliza Johns on 7 June 1828 in Gallatin, IL. The family lived in Cave-in-Rock, Gallatin, IL / Hardin, IL. Andrew, a farmer, died on 24 July 1866 and is buried at Matthews Cemetery in Hardin, IL.
