NOTES:
Mary Rebecca Guthrie was born about 1844 in Mississippi. She married William Riley Segler on 4 March 1868 in Pontotoc, Mississippi. They lived in Lafayette County, MS where they raised their children. Mary died there on Christmas Day, 25 December 1884. Sometime after that, William moved to Fannin County, TX, remarried and had another son. He died there on 1 Oct 1917.

Rhua (or Ruah) Ann Segler was probably born about 11 December 1869 in Lafayette County, Mississippi. She was already 8 months old during the 1870 census, which was assessed in Township 9 on the 7th of September 1870. Later records show her DOB as 1870 or 1871. The 1880 census lists her as 10 years of age.

When she was about 20, Ruey Segler married a Wilson. No records found so far for verification,. Find-a-Grave notes list him as “Ben Wilson” while other trees list him as “W.J. or Ben”. Three daughters were born to this marriage: Lizzie, Ida May, and Bennie. The husband died about 1898. By this time they were already living in Fannin County, Texas.

The 1900 census lists a multi-generational household with a blended family. William R Seglar, 63, has by this time remarried to Nancy (Wilson) Seglar and they have a ten-year old son, Aron. Ruah, listed as Rui Wilson, 30, is listed as a stepdaughter rather than a daughter. (Maybe Nancy was providing the info to the census taker.) The three daughters are listed as granddaughters: Ida M Wilson, 10; Lizzie Wilson, 6; and Bennie Wilson, 4. Easter Wilson, 47, is listed as a sister, rather than sister-in-law (again probably Nancy’s response rather than relationship to William as the Head of Household.)

Two of the daughters are not found after this 1900 census, Lizzie and Bennie. Daughter Ida May Wilson grows up, marries, and has children of her own.

On 22 October 1903, Ruie Wilson married James LeFevers in Fannin County, Texas. A gentleman farmer and merchant, James was a recent widower. His first wife, Amanda May (Roberts) LeFevers had died earlier that year on the 6th of February. By Amanda he had 5 sons and 4 daughters born between 1864 and 1883, now ranging in age from 20 to 39. Rhua was just 33 and her new husband was 26 years her senior. They had two sons to add to the LeFever family, born in 1904 and 1908.

Sadly, tragedy struck the family with a series of deaths. Rhua died on 28 Sep 1908 at 38 years old, having given birth to her son Horace LeFevers on July 27th. Husband James LeFevers died next on the 20th of October 1908. Their infant son followed them on 27 July 1909 at a year of age. They are buried at Little Vine Cemetery in Maxey, Lamar County, Texas.

John Henry Segler was born on 17 September 1873 in Lafayette County, Mississippi where he was listed as a 6 year old on the 1880 census with his parents and siblings. The family was living in Texas at the time of his marriage to Ada Delay, a daughter of John Kennedy Delay and wife Mary Jane Works, about 1901. They had 2 daughters, Ruey and Maud, both of whom died in infancy or early childhood. John was a farmer. The WWI Draft Registration card describes him as being of medium height and build with brown hair and eyes.

John and Ada moved from Lamar to Fort Worth in Tarrant County, and next to Nueces County. By 1935, they settled in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. John died there on 12 September 1948 just shy of his 75th birthday. Ada lived until 12 July 1972. She also died in San Antonio.

Mary Elizabeth Segler was born about January 1879 in Lafayette County, Mississippi. She was listed as Mary E Segler, 1, on the 1880 census of Lafayette Springs, the daughter of William R and Mary R Segler. Her mother was listed as sick during that census with ‘bilious fever’, and died in 1884.

The family moved to Fannin County, Texas sometime after her mother’s death. Her father remarried about 1887 to Nancy Wilson. The next census year is 1900, and it appears the census taker was a little confused by the family dynamics (or maybe the family dynamics have us confused). Lizzie Segler appears to be living in the household, a single woman of 21 years of age, listed as Mary E Segler Wilson and labelled as a granddaughter rather than daughter.

On 27 July, 1906, Lizzie Segler married George Washington ‘G.W.’ Mathews in Fannin County, Texas. There is a notation of of a Lizzie Segler marrying a W. J Roach on 7 Jan 1897, but that must have been a different woman as W. J Roach’s death certificate indicates that he lived until 1935 and was still married to Lizzie Segler.

Lizzie and G W lived in Fannin County Texas. He died there in 1908, a year after their only child’s birth. George is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Fannin County, Texas. During the 1910 Census, Lizzie Matthews, 28, and her daughter Effie M Matthews, 2, are found living with her parents in Fannin County, Texas. Lizzie only lived until 1915. She is buried in Georgia Cemetery, Georgia, Lamar County, Texas.
