Notes:
Priscilla Guthrie’s parents were married in Goochland, Virginia, but there is some indication that they lived in North Carolina during the Revolutionary War years prior to their move to Kentucky. According to 1880 census records of her son, Priscilla was born in Kentucky. This was most likely in Green County. The family was in Adair County, KY by 1803.
When she was 20 years old, Priscilla married John Hadley. He was the son of Rev. War Patriot Soldier Pvt. James Hadley. John was born in Maryland. HIs occupation is not documented in census records. Census records show the presence of eight boys and girls in the household inferred to be John and Priscilla’s children. The family moved to Collinsville township in Madison County, Illinois about 1817. Two of Priscy’s brothers had also made the move to Madison County, Illinois.

Born 1801 KY – Died 1871 MO
Spouse: Enoch Jones m. 17 Oct 1820 in Madison County, IL
Elizabeth Hadley was born 4 Oct 1801 in Kentucky according to family trees. She was 19 at her marriage to Enoch Jones in Madison, IL on 17 Oct 1820. They lived between Macoupin and Apple Creeks in Greene County, Illinois during the 1850 census. They had moved to Missouri by 1860 when Enoch died. He is on the Mortality Census of 1860 for Gentry County. Elizabeth was living with her son, John W Jones and his wife Mary and son Albert during the 1860 census in Township 65, Gentry, Missouri. Their post office was at Grants Hill. John was a farmer with real estate valued at $1600 and personal estate at $1000.

CHILD 2: REV. JAMES HADLEY

Spouse 1: Possible Unidentified First Wife m. about 1830
Spouse 2: Mrs. Abigail (MNU) Young m. 8 Oct 1840 in Madison County, IL
Spouse 3: Mrs Clementine Randall (Otwell) Gates m. 2 Apr 1850 in Madison County, IL
Spouse 4: Almira M Beauvois m. 16 Jul 1857 in Madison County, IL
James Hadley was born in Kentucky about February of 1803. His parents moved the family to Illinois and settled in Madison County. James was both a farmer and Methodist preacher. Area marriage and census records reveal he was probably married three to four times.
If she existed, the wife remains unidentified. There were two children born prior to 1840: Sarah Ann (1831) and John W (1834). The latter’s death certificate identifies his father as James Hadley. Another option would be that they are children of Mrs Abigail Young by her first marriage. The 1830 census lists the households of John Young Sr, John Young Jr and Andrew Young. The latter appears to be alive in 1840, while the other John Young household are not the right age to be the same person. Abigail had one known son with Rev. James Hadley, his namesake, James M Hadley, born 1841.
Abigail apparently died by 1849. Rev. James Hadley married again on 2 Apr 1850 in Madison, IL to Mrs. Clementine Randall (Otwell) Gates, the widow of Norman Edgar Gates with whom she had at least 2 sons, one unidentified and Joseph C Gates (1837).

Clementine died on 1 Dec 1853 in Collinsville, Madison, IL. She is the most likely candidate to be the mother of Ann Hadley, listed as age 6 in the 1860 census.
Rev. James Hadley remarried on 16 July 1857 in Madison, IL to Almira Beauvois. Their marriage record lists her given name as Elmira, while her gravestone lists it as Almira. They had two children Florence and Alfred.
The 1860 census of Madison, IL confuses things a bit by listing James’ wife as Ann instead of Almira. The transcription also lists the surname as Hudley rather than Hadley

Nancy Hadley appears to be one of the older children. Their names have been gathered from county records. Nancy was 16 years old at the time of her marriage to David Conway. He was about five years her elder and a farmer by occupation. They lived in Madison County, IL through the 1830 census when their household consisted of 1M 30-39, 1F 20-29, 2M 5-9 and 2M under 10.
By 1840, they were living in Wilmington, Greene, Illinois:

CHILD 4: REV. WILLIAM HADLEY
Born 1806 KY – Died 1896 IL

William Hadley was born 28 Nov 1806 in Adair County, Kentucky. The family moved to Madison County, IL when he was still young. He worked as a farm laborer and a farmer, but was also a minister of the gospel who performed many local marriages. His own marriage to Diadema McKinney occurred on 16 Sep 1830. He was 23 and she was about 20. They lived in Collinsville, Madison, Illinois and had four children. Diadema died on 8 March 1863 at the age of 54. William outlived her by 33 years. His death came at the age of 89 on 4 November 1896. They are buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Collinsville.

CHILD 5: BATHSHEBA D HADLEY
Born 1811-15 KY or IL – Died 1839-1840 IL
Spouse: David S Rankin m. 25 Dec 1838 in Madison County, IL
David S Rankin was born about 1814, so it is probably his wife was of similar age. Bathsheba D Hadley may have been the daughter in the 1811-15 age bracket. No further data has been found on Bathsheba, but it appears that she died about 1839 – 1840. David S Rankin married again in Coles County, Illinois on 14 Dec 1841 to Matilda Nicholson. The 1850 census shows the eldest of the household’s children to be born about 1842, so it is likely that David and Bathsheba had no surviving children.

CHILD 6: DEMPSEY HADLEY
Born 1815 KY – Died 1863 IL
Spouse 1: Justina Clinton Otwell m. 24 March 1840 in Madison County, IL
Spouse 2: Martha Penney m. 22 Sep 1853 in Madison County, IL
Dempsey Hadley was born on 26 August 1815 in Kentucky. He was a young child when his parents moved to Madison County, Illinois and he would remain there throughout his life working as a farmer. Dempsey was married twice. His first wife was Justina Clinton Otwell whom he married in 1840. They had 5 sons and 2 daughters between 1841 and 1851. Justina died about 1852 in Collinsville, Madison, IL and was buried at Glenwood Cemetery.
With a household of young children, Dempsey remarried on 22 Sep 1853. His second wife was Martha Penney by whom he had 2 sons and a daughter. Dempsey died at only 47 years of age on 5 March 1863. Martha survived him by 13 years. Her death came in 1876 when she was 54.

CHILD 7: UNIDENTIFIED SON
Born 1816-20 KY or IL – Died Aft. 1830
Marital Status: Unknown
No personal information on this son other than he is enumerated in the 1830 census. Most likely died young.

CHILD 8: DOROTHY HADLEY
Born 1816-20 KY – Died 1850
Spouse: Lewellyn Brown Gillham m. 26 Jan 1842 in Madison County, IL
Dorotha/Dorothea/Dorothy appears to be the youngest of the daughters, born about 1820 according to the census. Although, it lists her birthplace as TN. This might be a red flag, but her son, Emory B Gillham is found living with brother James Hadley after both parents’ death during the 1860 census.
Dorothy married Lewellyn Brown Gillham on 26 Jan 1842 in Madison, IL. She was his second wife. He had previously married S M Johnson in 1838. The 1850 census is the only one listing them as a family:
Lew Allen B Gillham 34 m Farmer real estate: 2000 born IL
Dorotha Gillham 30 f born TN
Emory B Gillham 7 m born IL
Sarah G Gillham 1 f born IL
Llewellyn Brown Gillham died on 12 July 1850. His wife Dorothy reportedly died later the same month according to one family tree. William Hadley was assigned as the administrator of his brother-in-law’s estate. Documents mention the 2 children. Also payments for medical care for both L B Gillam and his wife. William Hadley was also noted to be the legal guardian of Sarah Lucretia Gillham.
