Pioneer Rancher of Nevada Passes
“News of the death of Fred Wallace, pioneer Nevada rancher and mining man, in San Lorenzo, Calif., on Sunday was received here by his niece, Mrs William S Gardner of Reno. He was 85. As a prospector for an eastern mining company, Mr Wallace moved to Hawthorne in 1907. He later made several copper and quicksilver discoveries, and during the Lucky Boy mining camp days, he operated a club. At one time he homesteaded a ranch near Hawthorne, and it is upon that land that the main buildings of the Hawthorne naval ammunition depot are now located. Mr Wallace was born in Santa Rosa, Calif. He had made his home in San Lorenzo with his daughter, Mrs Frank Rourke, for the last five years. Funeral services were held Monday at Williams, Calif., where the Wallace family lived for many years.
