CHILD 1: SUSANNAH GUTHREY
1761VA – ????
Spouse: John Criddle

Susannah Guthrey is not listed in ‘Old Walton’s’ as a daughter of Alexander Guthrey, but she mentioned in his will as “my well beloved daughter Susannah Criddle.” Her husband John Criddle, was named as one of the executors of Alexander’s will. Susannah was to received the inheritance of a Negro slave named Jenny after Alexander’s death. She had already received from her father a Negro slave girl named Agga. A sorrel made, saddle, and bridle, and 1/4 of the land lying on the South east side of Cairo road, one feather bed and furniture, one large glass beausette, pewter, and all kitchen furniture.

The records of Davidson County, TN list the estate of a John Criddle and his mother, Susannah. This Susannah is reportedly not Susannah Guthrey Criddle. Online trees connect this family with John Criddle of Cumberland County, VA who married Elizabeth Smith. The Criddle families are likely to be connected, but the details require research. See Gambil’s 1875 ‘Leeepr-Drake Kith and Kin‘ from some insight into the Criddle family.

CHILD 2: BENJAMIN GUTHREY
1764VA – 1845-50KY
Spouse: Frances (MNU)

Benjamin Guthrey was born on 4 August 1764 in Orange County, Virginia per his Revolutionary War Pension Application. He married on 25 July 1786 to Frances, whose maiden name is unknown. Prior to his father’s death, “Benjamin Guthrey received, in 1802 one-half of the land in Kentucky that was secured by James Harrod, Esq. Also, he received a small bore gun and a Negro slave named Tobis, and a bay mare with her increase.” (Old Waltons, p.362) He had already moved to Kentucky by 1819, when he and his younger brother, Alexander Iverson Guthrey sold their share of land to Thomas Maddox. They were listed on the Woodford, KY Tax Lists in 1800. Benjamin and his family were enumerated in the Woodford, KY census records of 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840. He died there between 1845 and 1850. His wife died between the 1830 and 1840 censuses.

CHILD 3: ALEXANDER GUTHREY
1767VA – 1835KY
Spouse: Martitia Wilhoit

Family trees frequently list this son as either “Alexander King Guthrey Jr” because his father’s middle name is documented as King, or as “Alexander Iverson Guthrey Sr” because his son’s middle name is documented as Iverson. There appears to be an assumption of a matching middle name to go along with the Sr/Jr designation. So far, no original documentation has turned up identifying any middle name at all. Do you have evidence of a middle name for this man?

Like his brother Benjamin, prior to their father’s 1817 death, Alexander received his inheritance of land in Kentucky and a slave boy named Tobie (son of Jenny). He was in Woodford County, Kentucky by the date of his marriage to Martitia Wilhoit on 16 June 1797. They lived in Franklin County, Kentucky at the time of the 1810 census. Alexander, along with Benjamin, sold their inherited KY property to their brother-in-law, Thomas Maddox, in 1819. At that time Alexander and his family were residing in Owen County, Kentucky.

CHILD 4: SARAH ‘SALLY’ GUTHREY
1769VA – before 1817VA
Spouse 1: (FNU) Maddox

Spouse 2: Jesse D Parker

Her father’s will suggests that his daughter Sally has died by the time he wrote it. “To the children of my daughter Sally Maddox, afterward Sally Parker…”

Sally presumably married her first husband about 1787 when she was eighteen, plus or minus a couple of years. Probably in Cumberland County, Virginia.

Sally’s first marriage is believed to be to John Maddox. An appraisal of his estate was made in Cumberland County on 30 Dec 1800. (Will Book 3, page 174-175)

Her second marriage was to Jesse Parker, a son of David and Elizabeth Parker. He served as a ‘Minute Man’ 1777-1778 and later in the continental army. He was taken prisoner at Sunbury and held aboard the prison ship at Savannah for 5 or 6 months when he made his escape and went to Augusta. He received a discharge from Col. Richard Parker of Virginia after the expiration of his term of service, which was 3 years. No family data in the file. See Pension Records – S.11,217 VA.

During the 1810 census, the household of Jesse Parker of Cumberland County, Virginia included 1M 45 and over, 1F 26-44, 1F 16-25, 1F 10-15, 3M and 1F under 10. Sally is presumably the woman of 26-44 years of age placing her birth between 1766 and 1784. This range fits the 1769 date found in trees. Jesse Parker died in 1838-39 leaving a will recorded in Cumberland County, Virginia. The will names sons: Isham, Jeremiah, and Jesse D Parker, daughters Mary Ann Jesse and Susan G. Brown, and several slaves.

CHILD 5: HANNAH GUTHREY
Abt. 1770VA – ????
Spouse: Thomas Maddox

Hannah’s marriage to Thomas Maddox took place in Virginia. They purchased her father’s land in Cumberland County for $377, and reserved a dower right of 200 acres for his widow Mary Guthrey. The same year, 1819, Thomas Maddox also purchased the Kentucky property inherited by her brothers Benjamin and Alexander Guthrey. Hannah’s inheritance included two slave girls named Dinah and Milly.

Early Virginia Guthries and their Kentucky Descendants: “Thos. Maddox died in Cumberland County Circa 1826 and the administration of his estate discloses that he left surviving him his widow, Hannah, a daughter Nancy, who married John Ransom; a daughter Polly, who married Cary Southall, and a son William (book 8 Cumberland County, Clerk page 242). This suggests that the “Anderson Maddox” who inherited his grandfather Alexander’s library of books was the son of Hannah’s sister Sarah by her first husband, an unidentified Maddox.

CHILD 6: ELIZABETH GUTHREY
Abt. 1779VA – Aft. 1860 VA
Spouse: Jesse Davis

Elizabeth Guthrey married Jesse Davis in Virginia. He died in Lynchburg in 1832. In addition to inheriting a sorrell mare and a red cow, she also received a slave named Jack “who was given to me by my grandmother Elizabeth Oakes.” This gives us our only clue about the possible maiden name of Alexander’s mother, Sarah.

A Cumberland County indenture dated 22 November 1819 between Jesse Davis and Elizabeth Davis his wife of Cumberland and Thomas Maddox of same sold for $700 their interest to alexander Guthrey’s deed will as well as all the right title & interest that John cradle and wife Susannah Criddle have by virtue of the will of Alexander Guthrey, decd for lands reserving the dower rights of Mary Guthrey, widow of Alexander Guthrey, decd.

Elizabeth (Guthrey) Davis’ DOD is unknown. Sometime after Jesse died in 1834. There is an Elizabeth Davis of the right age living in the household of widow Sarah Baughton/Bangton in 1850 and 1860 Cumberland.

PERIODICAL: Notes and Queries. (1949). The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography57(1), 76–91. http://www.jstor.org/stable/4245605

An entry submitted by Joseph A Guthrie of Wyandotte, Kansas (author of Early Virginia Guthries and their Kentucky Descendants) regarding the discussion of the name Alexander King Guthrey an the origin of his middle name as it might pertain to his ancestry…..

Query Excerpt:
GUTHRIE-OAKS- MADDOX- CRIDDLE-SOUTHALL-RANSOM
In his will Alexander Guthrie refers to “Elizabeth Oaks” as his “grandmother”; she went with him from Orange to Cumberland County in I765 and died there, leaving a will in 1784. Information as to her maiden name; her husband’s Christian name; how she came to be “grandmother” of Alexander Guthrie, and the maiden name of
“Sarah,” the first wife of Alexander Guthrie, is lacking and is greatly desired.

In the hope, however, that it may lead to more definite knowledge on the subject, it is believed worth while to call attention, in this supplementary manner, to some facts, which, in the writer’s opinion, strongly indicate that the Thomas Guthrie above referred to, was a descendant, and possibly the son, of Edward Guthrie, who patented
lands in King & Queen County, Virginia, in i695.

The facts are these:
(1.) In St. Peter’s Parish Register, New Kent County, Va., at page I8, the following entries are found:
Robert, son of Robert King, bap. March 11, 1687-8
Alexander, son of Robert King, bap. Dec’r 19, 1689.

(2.) From the Virginia “Quit-Rent Rolls of 1704,” as published by T.J Wertenbaker, in his work ‘”Planters of Colonial Virginia: we take the following:
John King, 150 acres, in King and Queen Co.
Edward King, 200 acres, in King and Queen Co
Daniel King, 200 acres, in King and Queen Co.
Robert King, 100 acres, in King and Queen Co.
Robert King, 200 acres, in King William County, “Quarter Plantation.”

The Robert King last mentioned is, almost certainly, the same Robert King who, as shown above, recorded in New Kent County, the birth of a son, Alexander King, in I689, for at that time the County of New Kent embraced all the land which, by I70I, had fallen into the counties of King & Queen and King William; which is to
say that, in I69I, all of New Kent County which lay north of the Pamunkey river was formed into the county of King & Queen, and in 170I all of King & Queen County which lay between the rivers Pamunkey and Mattaponi was formed into the county of King William.

So it is that the I00 acres of land in King & Queen County, and the 2oo acres in King William County, listed in the Quit Rent Rolls of I704 as belonging to Robert King, may well have been, and probably were, lands which, in I689, were situated in New Kent County, and which belonged to the Robert King, who then resided in that county.

The entire 300 acres of Robert King, it thus appears, from x69I to 1701, were in King & Queen County, but, in 1701, 2oo acres fell into King William County, and were referred to in the Quit Rent Rolls as the “Quarter Plantation,” which indicates that the residence of Robert King, and its appurtenances, were still maintained in King & Queen County, when, in I701, his 20o acres in King William County became the “Quarters” of his overseer and slaves; and it is possible that, following the law of primogeniture, the I00 acres in King & Queen County, at the death of Robert King, Sr., went to his elder son Robert, Jr., while the “Quarter” plantation went to his son Alexander.

As beating on the importance attached to this family name, “King,” at the time and in the vicinity referred to, attention is called to the fact that in St. Peter’s Parish Register, in addition to the entries above referred to, are also found the following
(Pg. 17):
“Mary, dau. of Thos. King and Mary, his wife, bapt. June 11, I689”; also this
“Robert Burbidge married Mary King Aug. 11, 1711.”

The Julius King Burbidge whose name appears in 1738, in the church records of Blissland Parish, New Kent County, was probably the son of the above Robert and Mary Burbidge, and his middle name “King” is evidence of the esteem in which his parents, at least, held that family name. (Blissland Par. Vestry Book, New Kent Co.,
Va., 1721-1786, pp. 52-54-57-68-69, Archives Div. Va. State Library.)

What has thus far been said, it seems to the writer, gives great significance to the name “Alexander King Guthrie,” the son of Thomas, and more particularly so, in the light of the facts that in all of Tidewater Virginia no mention can be found of any “Alexander King,” of the period in question, other than the one born in New Kent County in I689, and that there is no other source which is known, or even conjectured, to be the true one, of the name Alexander King, as applied to the son of Thomas Guthrie, than the Alexander King here referred to.

Giving attention now to Edward Guthrie, it is noted that the lands patented by him in King & Queen County, in I695 were, as stated in the grant, “At the mouth of the Mattaponi” – “Thence down and along the rivers Matta-
poni and York,” etc.

The above description can very well be harmonized with the assumption that a portion of the patented lands lay between the rivers Mattaponi and Pamunkey, and, therefore actually on what is known as Pamunkey Neck, but the more reasonable interpretation of the descriptive language would seem to locate all of the land north
of the Mattaponi, and therefore, in King & Queen County as it still remained after 1701.

But, in either event, the lands were in the immediate vicinity of Pamunkey Neck, and the Village of Westpoint, and probably lay directly across the Mattaponi, from that historic place.

It certainly requires no stretch of imagination to believe that, in such close proximity as they evidently were, the families of Edward Guthrie and Robert King, Sr., in that, then, rather simple community, knew and came into contact with each other.

Edward Guthrie was granted his lands in I695; presumably, he was then not less than 21 years of age.
Let us here, purely for illustrative purposes, take the year I7I5. Edward Guthrie was then not less than 41 years of age, and Alexander King was 26 years of age.

If Edward Guthrie was, in 1715, the father of a son Thomas, it is certainly not impossible that, circa I735, he may have married a daughter of Alexander King, and that, of the union, was born, circa I 738, a son, to whom was given the name “Alexander King Guthrie.”

There is, however, one established fact with which the above theory must be reconciled, before it can be accepted as true, viz: The name of the grandmother of “Alexander King Guthrie” was Oakes – Elizabeth Oakes.
The reconciliation, in the case supposed, can be made by the assumption that Alexander King died before his wife, and that she remarried and became Elizabeth Oakes.
