NOTES:
Elizabeth was the second of three daughters in the Guthrey family. Her DOB is recorded in the family’s “Hunter-Morris Bible” along with the birth dates of their children and other family members.

Many trees list Elizabeth’s birthplace as Louisa County, Virginia, which is where the Morris’ lived after their Cumberland, Virginia marriage. However, it is more likely that her birthplace was in King William County, Virginia as her parents were living there before Thomas leased property in Cumberland County in Feb 1750.

Their exact marriage date is unknown, but documented in trees as 1768 in Cumberland County, Virginia. That is the year their first child was born on 24 October. The family is documented in Louisa County, Virginia during the 1820 and 1830 censuses.

CHILD 2: GUTHRIE MORRIS
1770VA – 1842KY
Spouse: Dorothy ‘Dolly’ Holland

Guthrie Morris is also documented in trees as Guthrie Gentry Morris, but no source data has been found to support the middle name. His birth date of 20 Nov 1770 is recorded in the Hunter-Morris Family Bible. On 1 Oct 1799, he married Dorothy ‘Dolly’ Holland.

By the time of the 1810 census, they had settled in Fluvanna, Fluvanna County, Virginia. The Guthrie Morris household was enumerated on 6 August 1810:
1M and 1F 26-44 (born 1766-1784)
1M 10-15 (born 1795-1800); 3M and 3F under 10 (born 1801-1810)
Enslaved Persons: 6
Total Household Members: 15

Guthrie Morris served the United States during the War of 1812 as an Ensign in the 7th Regiment (Gray’s) of Virginia Militia. [See: Fold 3]

Dolly’s death is given to us in family trees as the year 1816, but property records in Fluvanna, VA show that she was alive in 1838 when they were documented as residents of Clark County, KY. She is also a legatee in his will.

In 1820, the Guthrie Morris household was enumerated in Columbia, Fluvanna, Virginia on 7 Aug 1820:
1M 45 and over (born before 1776); 1F 26-44 (born 1775-1794)
2M and 1F 16-25 (born 1795-1804), 1M and 2F 10-15 (born 1805-1810), 2M and 1F under 10 (born 1811-1820)

Total Household Members: 24

In 1824, Guthrie Morris was appointed Sheriff of Fluvanna County by commission of the Governor of Virginia and made bond accordingly

The 1830 Census of Fluvanna, Virginia lists the “Guthard Morris’ household:
1M 50-59 (born 1771-1780), 1F 40-49 (born 1781-1790)
1M 20-29 (1801-1810), 1M 15-19 (born 1811-1815), 2M 5-9 (born 1821-1825)
Enslaved Persons: 12
2F 36-54, 1M 24-35, 3M 10-23, 3M and 3F under 10.

Guthrie Morris and his wife Dorothy sold the majority of their property to George Hunter Jr on 22 Oct 1838 (Fluvanna Deed Book 12 page 57-58). They conveyed deeds of gift to their son William Morris and to son-in-law Joel H Parrish. They were noted to be living in Clark County, Kentucky at the time. There are no Clark, KY Deeds under their names. Nor are any deeds found under their names in Henry County, KY, which is the location of Guthrie Morris’ death, but must be there are it appears he owned property in the county.

During the 1840 census, Guthrie Morris, and his wife, if still living, were likely residing with relatives.

Census-Based Accounting of Children suggests there may have been as many as 12 children, although the youngest could potentially represent grandchildren if one of the census years included a generational family. There are 8 children identified in Guthrie Morris’ will.

CHILD 3: JOSHUA MORRIS
1773VA – 1820VA
Spouse: Ann ‘Nancy’ Lea

This family also has a potential for misidentification of records and descendants because there are two women of approximately the same age whose married name is “Nancy Morris” living in Louisa County, Virginia.

Joshua Morris married Nancy Lea in Louisa, VA on 21 Dec 1801, reportedly a daughter of John & Ann Davis. The 1820 census shows the Joshua Morris household with 1M and 1F 26-44, 2M and 1F 16-25, 1M 10-15, 1M and 2F under 10, and 14 Slaves. Joshua Morris died later that year, about December 1820.

Joshua Morris dec’d Estate Settlement completed by Guthrie Morris, admr. who found a balance of $380.88 due to the estate. Commissioners Nathaniel Perkins, William Ragland, and James Hughson awarded Guthrie Morris a $100 “reasonable commission” for his trouble, care & responsibility. – 19 Feb 1825
The record of the Estate of George Morris, Dec’d immediately follows on p.42

This left Nancy (Lea) Morris a widow with a family of up to 7 children. The children in the 1820 household would look something like this depending on birth order:
1.) (FNU Son) born 1802-1804 [Census age 16-25 (1795-1804), but narrowed as marriage date in Dec 1801]
2.) (FNU Son) born 1802-1804 [Census age 16-25 (1795-1804), but narrowed as marriage date in Dec 1801]
3.) (FNU Dau) born 1802-1804 [Census age 16-25 (1795-1804), but narrowed as marriage date in Dec 1801]
4.) (FNU Son) born 1805-1810 [Census age 10-15]
5.) (FNU Son) born 1811-1820 [Census age under 10]
6.) (FNU Daughter) born 1811-1820 [Census age under 10]
7.) (FNU Son) born 1811-1820 [Census age under 10]

The Louisa County, Virginia census records includes a second Nancy Morris household.

There is only 1 Nancy Morris household in 1830:
1.) Nancy Morris – 1F 70-79, 1F 40-49, 3M and 1F 20-29, 1M and 1F 15-19, 2M 10-14, and 15 Slaves
This is presumed to be Joshua Morris’ widow, aged 40-49, with an older woman in the household.

There are 2 Nancy Morris households in 1840: Nancy Morris and Mrs Nancy Morris
1.) Nancy Morris – 50-59, 1M and 1F 20-29, and 7 Slaves
2,) Mrs Nancy Morris – 50-59, 1F 30-39, 2F 15-19, 1M 20-29, and 47 Slaves
Both women are about the same age. It seems doubtful that Joshua’s widow suddenly acquired another 30 slaves, but without additional info either could be correct.

The 1850 Census of Louisa VA lists only one “Ann Morris”
Ann Morris 67 Real Estate 400 Birthplace VA
Jno. S. Morris 33 M Farmer VA
Emily I Morris 33 F VA
Edloe Moorris 10 M VA
Matilda 4 F VA
Wm H Kennon 13 M VA
Ann M Kennon 11 F VA
Elthelbert Kennon 7 M VA

Note that the marriage records of Louisa Virginia identify Maria Jane Morris, daughter of Joshua and Nancy, who married McCalley Kennon. This likely proves the above census record is that belonging to Ann “Nancy” (Lea) Morris, Joshua’s widow.

The second Ann “Nancy” Morris might be living outside of Louisa VA in 1850. There are two in Virginia who appear to be widows: Nancy Morris in Henry, VA and Nancy Morris in Wythe, VA.

The Virginia Deaths and Burials Index lists Nancy Morris, born about 1782 in Louisa, VA, died 19 Feb 1858 Louisa, Louisa, VA, age 76, white, widowed, female: Father: James Watson, Mother: Sarah Watson (FHL2048591.) It looks like the Nancy Morris who is not Joshua’s widow was dead by 1858, and it appears that the 1860 census listing Ann Morris (below) is the same person as the one in the 1850 census.

The 1860 Census lists Ann Morris at bells Crossroads, Southern District, Louisa VA:
Ann Morris 70 F Domestic Personal Estate 7500 BA [Nancy would actually be about 77 if born in 1783]
William Morris 50 Farmer VA [born about 1810]
Ethelbert Cannon 18 M Laborer Real Estate 753, Personal Estate 750 VA

There are no Ann or Nancy Morris entries for Louisa VA in 1870. There is one entry for Albemarle, Virginia for Nancy Morris born about 1787 VA living at Samuel Miller, Albemarle, VA (Post office: North Garden Depot), occupation: retired housekeeper. This is the household of Mary J Toole, 50, John L Toole 26, Alice Toole 18. Also in the household is Jane Scruggs, 50.

Based on these records, Nancy (Lea) Morris died after 1860, and potentially after 1870, in either Louisa or in Albemarle, VA. She had about 7 children, but there are census clues for only three: John S Morris (married to an Emily) born about 1817, a daughter married to a Kennon or Canon, and William Morris born about 1840.

Another Louisa VA marriage record identifies an Elizabeth A Morris (born 1802-1804 as the daughter of Joshua Morris. She married a Thomas G. Bickley.

The last will and testament of Joshua’s father, David Morris, identifies Joshua and Nancy’s children:
Wm. O Morris, James M Morris, Elizabeth A Moris, Marier Jane Morris, John S Morris. He bequeathed to them a property of 100 acres to be held by their mother Nancy during her natural life or remarriage, including the dwelling house, after which it is to be sold and proceeds divided equally among the children.

CHILD 4: SALLY MORRIS
1775VA – Aft. 1793
Spouse: Gideon Floyd

Sally Morris was born on 19 August 1775 in Louisa County, Virginia. She married at 17 years of age to Gideon Floyd on 2 May 1793.

There are no Floyd (grantee) deeds recorded in the Louisa County, VA index (FHL 007895922 IMG 92) nor any (grantor) deeds recorded there (FHL 007898575 IMG 93).

There is a “Gidian Floid” listed as a resident of Henry County, Kentucky on the 1800 Tax List dated 6 Aug 1800.
General Index for Henry County KY Deeds 1799 – Letter F Index begins IMG136 – includes several Floyd entries, but none found for Gideon Floyd. Although the name gideon Floyd is also found in later records for Warren County KY, none appear to be linked in any obvious way to the Gideon Floyd who married Sally Morris in 1793.

Another potential record is the 1810 census of Bedford County, VA listing listing a Gideon Floyd (transcribed by Ancestry as Gedson Floyd) aged 26-44 (born 1766-1784). He is the only person in his household.

Sally’s father David Morris did not name her in his 1831 will, nor leave any legacies to grandchildren of the Floyd name, even though he did so for the children of his two deceased sons.

There is no other evidence found proving that Sally (Morris) Floyd was alive or dead at the time of her father’s death, or if her marriage to Gideon Floyd produced children. The absence from David Morris’ will suggests that she was deceased and without heirs.

CHILD 7: ELIZABETH MORRIS
1786VA – 1872VA
Spouse: George Hunter

Elizabeth Morris was born on 10 June 1786 in Louisa County, Virginia. She married at 17 years of age to George Hunter on 22 December 1803. They set up their household in the same county.

The 1820 census lists the George Hunter (transcribed as Tender) Household with:
1M 45 and over, 1 F 26-44, and 1M 16-25 with 6 Slaves. Engaged in Agriculture: 4.
As George and Elizabeth are only 17 years into their marriage at this point, it is uncertain whether the 1M16-25 is their son, another relative, or a laborer.

The 1830 census lists the George Hunter Household with:
1M 50-59, 1F 40-49, 1F 15-29, and with 9 slaves.
Since the younger female was not living in the household in 1820, it is uncertain whether she is a daughter, another relative, or a servant.

The 1840 census lists the George Hunter Household with:
1M 60-69, 1F 50-59, with 15 Slaves. Persons Employed in Agriculture: 7

The 1850 Census lists:
George Hunter, male, white, 79, born about 1771 in VA, Farmer, Industry: Agriculture, Real Estate 3923.
Elizabeth Hunter female, white, 66, born about 1784 in VA
The 1850 Slave Schedule lists George Hunter as a Slave Owner with 17 slaves aged 3 to 60.

George Hunter died on 11 August 1855 in Louisa County, Virginia. He left a long and complex will. His wife Elizabeth survived him. It appears that the had no children, or no surviving children at the time of his death. He planned to free all of his slaves at the time of his wife’s death, as long as they elected to leave America for Liberia. If they wished to remain in America, they would remain enslaved, but be given the choice of their own masters, and the parents of the slaves under 10 would be allowed to make the election on their behalf. It is a complicated process. After arranging the disposition of his slaves, George then designated the distribution of his land, other property, and money to his nieces and nephews. They were all to receive an equal share with the exception of his deceased brother William Hunter’s children. Since William married Elizabeth’s sister, his children would receive a double share of the estate.

There is only one Elizabeth Hunter of approximately the right age listed in the Virginia Census for 1860:
Elizabeth M Hunter age 74 born about 1786 female white, residence: Caroline County, Virginia, Personal Estate Value: 4000.
This is the household of a James Hunter, 47, wife Ellen, 40, and family with several others of the Hull, Hunter, Morris, Sullivan and Frawner surnames. Likely one of those nephews.
The 1860 Slave Schedule for Southern District, Louisa Virginia lists Elizabeth Hunter as a Slave Owner of 17 slaves aged 3 to 60.

Elizabeth Hunter was still living during the Civil War and at the time President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves. Her husband George Hunter’s plans to free them never came to fruition as outlived him by about 17 years. The law freed his slaves before her death.

The 1870 Census of Southern District, Louisa, Virginia shows that Elizabeth Hunter was back in her home county.
Elizabeth Hunter, 83, born about 1787 in VA, Farmer, Personal Estate 2500, Real Estate 6477
Fanne L Goodain 12 female white at school Personal Estate 1500, Real Estate 2000

Elizabeth Hunter died about 1872.

CHILD 8: CAROLINE MATILDA MORRIS
1790VA – 1844MO
Spouse: Jacob Fackler

The page in the Hunter-Morris Family Bible where Caroline’s birth should be recorded is torn and missing. She is believed to have been born about 1790. Her marriage record to Jacob Fackler on 19 Oct 1810 lists her father as David Morris. Trees list her husband’s full name as Joseph Jacob Fackler. He was born in Hagerstown, Maryland on 11 Sep 1774 and resided in Augusta, Virginia before and after his marriage to Caroline. They had 9 children born between 1811 and 1832. Between the 1840 Census and Caroline’s death on 20 Sep 1844, the family moved from Virginia to Missouri. Caroline was buried at Blackburn cemetery in Saline County, Missouri. Jacob lived until 6 September 1856. He is also buried at Blackburn.
