NOTES:
Still governed by the Virginia legislature, Kentucky was divided into three counties in 1780–Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln–with the area of today’s Madison County being part of Lincoln County. In 1785, settlers that had moved out of Fort Boone to the banks of the Otter, Silver, and Tates Creeks, made a petition to the Virginia legislature to separate from Lincoln County. The petition was approved and the new Madison County was established from a portion of Lincoln County

Mary Guthrie presumably married George Marshall sometime prior to 1792 when their daughter Elizabeth was born. They also had daughters Elenor and Mary, who are mentioned in records as heir to her uncles, Reuben and Peter Guthrie.

Mary (Guthrie) Marshall was alive on 12 Oct 1803 when she signed her mark giving Power of Attorney to her brother Reuben Guthrie, along with other heirs of Peter Guthrie, decd. (Book E – 956). The 1813 deed for the sale of property by what appears to be the heirs of William Guthrie, including George Marshall and his daughters Elenor and Mary, includes mention of their mother, “his wife now deceased late Mary Guthrie” proving her death came sometime between 1803 and 1813.

George Marshall died about 1821. Executors brought his last will and testament to court and were approved as administrators of his estate. (Order Book E – 153)

Elizabeth Marshall was born on 9 March 1792 in Kentucky. Her marriage to Samuel Taylor took place in Madison County, KY when she was 19 years old on 23 January 1812. Both Samuel and Elizabeth Taylor were named in Power of Attorney documents as the Guthrie heirs arranged for members of the family to oversee their interests in 1813. They along with the other heirs sold their interests in a Madison County tract to William McBride in 1813.

Family tree listings for the birth locations of their children indicate the couple moved to Boone County, KY soon after their marriage. This county is located on the far north of the state along the Ohio River. The name Samuel Taylor shows up on the Tax List for Boone County KY in 1812, which is the year of their marriage. The 1820 Census of Burlington, Boone, KY lists a couple aged 26-44 with 3M and 3F under 10.

The Census of Boone County, KY in 1830 lists:
1M 40-49, 1F 30-39, 1F 20-29, 1M and 1F 15-19, 2M and 2F 10-14, 1M and 2F 5-9, 3M and 1F under 5. Total Free White Persons = 17. That includes 14 likely children. The Boone KY Tax Records for the year 1834 indicate there were 6 children in the household between 5 and 15. That doesn’t count those over or under those years.

Sometime between 1833 and 1835 (based on birth locations of the two youngest daughters), the family moved from Boone County, Kentucky to Knox County, Illinois. The family should be in Illinois during the 1840 census, but the correct record has not been located.

Samuel Taylor, Thomas Taylor, and Michael Taylor are listed as Heads of Households for Jackson County, Kansas having settled in April of 1856 per the Kansas State Census Collection for 1859.

Samuel Taylor was 76 at his death on 22 May 1862 in Jackson County, Kansas. He was buried at Circleville Cemetery. Elizabeth (Marshall) Taylor died on 1 Jan 1880 in Jackson County, Kansas and is also buried at Circleville Cemetery.

UPPER ELK. January 5th, 1880. Two aged ladies of this neighborhood were called away last Thursday night. – Mrs. Taylor, aged 88.,. and Mrs. Baxter, 78. Pneumonia fever seems to be the disease.

Some online trees including those found at Family Search have linked this family to people of similar names from England. This appears to be a misidentification error. Actual documentation linking this family to this Guthrie actually exists. The naming patters of the Marshall and Taylor children also associate with the Guthrie-Harris Abbott family.

Like their sister Elizabeth, Elenor and her sister Mary Marshall are listed in documents among the Guthrie heirs. Unlike her, they were under the age of 21 and unmarried at the time, requiring them to have a legal guardian to act on their behalf in such matters as authorizing power of attorney. Their father, George Marshall, was their named guardian, being the obvious person to perform that function.

It is unknown whether Mary Marshall was older or younger than her sister Eleanor Marshall. Both girls would have been born after 1792 making them younger than 21 years old in 1813 when the documents were written.
