Notes: From ‘The Tuggle Family of Virginia’ – Griffin Tuggle married as his second wife Mrs Frances Berry. The name of his first wife is unknown. That a son was born of the first marriage is shown by the fact that John Tuggle in his will dated 1 oct 1759 referred to “my grandson, Nicholas Tuggle.”

Based on the estimated DOB of Anne (Tuggle) Paschal in 1763, she should probably be placed as the daughter of Griffin Tuggle’s unidentified first wife. Yet Frances named Anne and two of her her daughters in her will. Might Anne have been born a Berry and later assumed the Tuggle surname of her stepfather, or was she a Tuggle by birth?

In 1770 Griffin Tuggle was admininistrator of the estate of his brother Henry. He was about 40 years old when the Revolutionary War began and was not in active service. However, he was a contributor of supplies as shown by the following entry from Middlesex County Militia: “To Griffin Tuggle for sundries furnished Oct 1781 – 3 pounds and 10 shillings.”

Upon Griffin Tuggle’s death, he names his ‘loving wife’ Frances and stepson William Berry to be his executors. His will indicated that Griffin was a resident of Chatham County, NC, but it was recorded in Caswell County, NC Will Book E, p.322. The widow survived her husband by 12 years. Her will was dated 2 Aug 1819 and was probated at the October term of the Caswell Court, recorded in Will Book H, page 283.
