ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG1A – BRANCH B
Before the use of genetic testing for genealogy came into being most people of Guthrie ancestry assumed we were all related to a single line of Guthrie men who were somehow connected to Guthrie Castle and to the Guthries of Guthrie. There are a large number of genetically unique groups, and for the moment, only one of them can lay claim to an inferred relationship with that family. Guthrie Family Group 1A (GFG1A) shares a genetic profile with a direct descendant of the Guthries of Craigie (See GFG1A – Branch A). The historical Guthrie family tree extends the Craigie line further back to a common ancestor with the Guthries of Guthrie. The lineage appears sound if YDNA testing can conclusively prove the generational ties.
The Guthrie family of Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia share a common paternal ancestor with the line of our VIP volunteer who descends from the Guthries of Craigie. Somehow, the Middlesex line fits into the Historical Guthrie line. How many generations are missing between John Guthrie of Middlesex, VA and the ancestor that connects their branch to the main part of the GFG1A tree? An examination of YDNA tests may provide some clues.

HENRY GUTHRIE / GUTHRIDGE
1683VA-16__VA
Henry Guthridge ye sone of John & Rebecca Guthridge baptized 5 of August 1683. (Christ Church Parish Register – Christenings)
The timing is right for Rebecca to be a 1st marriage for John Guthrie and for Henry to be his son. According to the CCPR John Guthrie is noted to be the only one of that name in the immediate area at the time.
There are no further entries for Rebecca or Henry in the CCPR. Henry may be the Henry Goodrich who died in Middlesex sometime before 3 April 1711 when the administration of his estate was granted to Thomas Haselwood. (Middlesex DB 3 p246)

ANN GUTHRIE / GUTTREY
1687VA-Unknown
Ann was born in 1687 in either September or October.
Ann Guttrey ye daughter of Jno & Elizth Guttrey was baptz 16th of Octob. 1687. (CCPR – Christenings)
There is no additional data on marriage or death date for Ann in the CCPR. At the time of her father’s death in 1706, Ann would have been about 19 years old if she survived to adulthood.

JOHN GUTHRIE / GUTHREY
1689VA-1733VA
John Guthrie was born in 1689 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia. The CCPR lists “John ye Sone of John & Eliza Guthrey Baptz 28th July 1689.” It was typical practice of the church in this parish to baptize at 1 month of age, so John was most likely born in late June 1689.
When his father died in 1706, John Guthrie was appointed a guardian by the name of William Finney. No other sons or daughters were appointed guardians even though there were children younger than himself in the family. This might indicate that those other children had predeceased their father, or that a formal guardianship was required only for the eldest surviving son. There is no other sign of the other children in later records.
John married three times during his lifetime. His first wife, Sarah Stiff died soon after their 1708 marriage. No children. He remarried to Jane Mitcham in 1710 by whom he had 2 sons: John & William and 2 daughters: Jane & Nanny. His wife Jane died 2 months after William’s birth. John married yet again 12 years later to Mary Shay. They had 4 sons: Garritt, Henry, William, and James. The eldest two sons, Garritt and Henry, have lineages that have been pieced together by descendants with genetic evidence of their group origins. William and James were twins. The latter may have died young, for only William, orphan of John Guthery, was bound out as an apprentice when he became old enough for training as a shoemaker and weaver. Nothing further is known of son William.
John Guthrie died 24 Oct 1733 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex, VA. His widow Mary survived another decade. She passed away on 2 Jan 1743.

RICHARD GUTHRIE
1691VA-UNKNOWN
The only documentation for Richard Guthrie is his baptism, which occurred in Christ Church Paris on 3 April 1691. Richard is presumed to have died young.

MASEY GUTHRIE / GUTHERY
1692VA-UNKNOWN
Masey is another son whose only documented appearance is his baptism on 4 Sep 1692 in Christ Church Parish. Presumed to have died young.

MARY GUTHRIE
1715VA-Unknown
“Mary–an illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Guttery.”
I find no other adult named Elizabeth Guthrie/Guttery in the county records at the time. If this record refers to Elizabeth (Baskett) Guthrie, her daughter Mary would have been born about 9 years after the death of her husband, John Guthrie. She would have been around 46 years old at the time. No other notations on Mary’s fate.

ANNE GUTHRIE
1724VA-UNKNOWN
“Anne illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Guttery born ______ baptized Decemr ye 6 1724.” Although the parish records leaves the birth date blank it appears along with other children born in 1724 and is listed in the records after her sister Mary, born 1715. Elizabeth would have been about 55 at the time of Anne’s birth. No further data on Anne.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
1636-1666: BIRTH of JOHN GUTHRIE (The Immigrant)
Scotland
There is no proven DOB for John Guthrie of Middlesex County, Virginia. There is no mention of his age or DOB in the local records. The only name listed in the Christchurch Parish, Middlesex records is John Guthrie, usually by a variant spelling. No middle names have ever been listed.
We can estimate a wide birth range for him based on the known DOM with Elizabeth Baskett in 1686. If he was aged 16-50 at the time of his marriage, he would have been born between 1636-1670.
The Old Parish Records of Scotland list numerous infants with recorded birth/baptismal records for that date range. It cannot be certain that his birth occurred in Angus (Forfarshire) because we have no other data to prove that, but GFG1 does include Guthries who lived in Angus. Filtering the list to just Angus results in a shorter list of 16 for closer research.
Possible Parents (OPR Birth Records):
1) Jon Guthrie son of Johne Guthrie/Marat Small on 2 Jun 1643 in Brechin
2) Johne Guthrie son of James Guthrie on 27 Apr 1650 in Dundee
3) Johne Guthrie son of Alexander Guthrie on 1 Jun 1651 in Dundee
4) Jon Guthrie son of David Guthrie on 27 Mar 1654 in Arbroath
5) Jhone Guthrie son of James Guthrie on 21 Aug 1654 in Arbirlot
6) Jhone Guthrie son of David Guthrie/Jean Arnot on 30 Jun 1659 in Arbroath
7) John Guthrie son of James Guthrie/Cirst. Soutar on 8 Apr 1660 in Kettins
8) Jhon Guthrie son of James Guthrie/Elizabeth Ouchterlony on 9 Aug 1661 in Arbroath
9) John Guthrie son of David Guthrie on 21 Feb 1662 in Dun
10) Johne Guthrie son of Patrik Guthrie/Elspeth Gibb on 26 Jul 1663 in Kinell
11) Jhone Guthrie son of Jhone Guthrie on 9 Apr 1664 in Arbirlot
12) John Guthrie son of John Guthrie/Helen Fife on 13 May 1666 in Dundee
13) Jhone Guthrie son of David Guthrie on 26 Oct 1666 in Arbirlot
14) John Guthrie son of David Guthrie/Isobell Davidson on 8 Oct 1667 in Arbroath
15) John Guthrie son of John Guthrie/Elspeth Kinninond on 17 Apr 1669 in Dundee
16) Johne Guthrie son of Alexr. Guthrie on 25 Sep 1670 in Tealing
In trying to narrow down the DOB, the earliest record in Middlesex, VA for a man of similar name is John Gutteridge, a planter, who along with Nicholas Payne, purchased land from Thomas Loe in 1674. Assuming that he was considered an adult at 21 years of age or older at this time, he would be born no later than 1656, which rules out the last 11 entries above.
The earliest entry confirmed to be this John Guthrie is the mention of his marriage to Elizabeth Baskett in 1686.
1656-1666: BIRTH of ELIZABETH BASKETT
Virginia (presumably)
Who was Elizabeth Baskett? She does not appear to be the daughter of John & Elizabeth Baskett of CCP who was baptized on 14 March 1679. If that is approximately her DOB, she would be too young to be a parent to John’s children in 1686. (Note that online trees list her DOB as 14 Mar 1669 even though the CCPR indicates the year was 1679.)
She also does not appear to be the widow of John Baskett, who lived until 1720. If Elizabeth was 20-30 at the time of her marriage to John Guthrie, her estimate birth range would be 1656-1666. An Elizabeth Guthrie was buried at the Old Casper River cemetery in 1731 at 70 years of age (Born 1661) that would fit the profile. (Lem’s Notes).
The latest data in circulation has found its way to WikiTree and Find-a-Grave, but remains unverified. Multiple versions of who married whom exist between the two sites. Basically, Elizabeth was supposedly the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth (Collier) Cordwell/Cardwell, born about 1663, and that she married John Baskett and then John Guthrie. Thomas had married Elizabeth Collyer 12 Apr 1662 in Middlesex. WikiTree indicates they had 4 daughters: Elizabeth (1663), Margaret (1666), Anne (1669) and Penelope (1672).
Thomas Cordwell left a will dated 12 May 1687 and proved 6 July 1689. He was buried in Christchurch Parish. Found it at Ancestry: Virginia, US Wills and Probate records, 1652-1900, Middelsex Wills 1675-1795, Image 34 of 776. He leaves his movable and immovable property to his (presumably 2nd) wife Mary Cordwoll, and to his daughters Ann Cordwoll and Penelope Cordwoll. I think these daughters are unmarried at the time of the will. Much of it is illegible. I can’t mark out anything that names a daughter Elizabeth or Margaret. Maybe one of you can transcribe it or find a published transcription. Witnesses to the Will were Daniel Long and Elizabeth Wood.
Unless it is there and illegible, there is no documentation of a daughter Elizabeth.
The couple John Baskett and wife Elizabeth (of undetermined maiden surname)
Dau Elizabeth 14 Mar 1679
Son: Thomas 16 Apr 1682
Son: Henry 23 Mar 1683/4
The last documented child of John Basket and wife Elizabeth occurs prior to the marriage of John Guthrie to his wife Elizabeth Baskett in 1686, so that fits the timeline. What does not is the DOD of the only John Baskett in the Middlesex records: 1720.
1658: JOHN GUTHRIE of YORK COUNTY, VIRGINIA (Likely Not a Match)
York County, Virginia
According to the Christ Church Parish Register (CCPR), John Guthrie was a Scottish immigrant to America. We don’t know his exact age or the year of his immigration. Nor do we know if Middlesex County, VA was the place he arrived, or if he settled there from elsewhere in Virginia. The records are sketchy due to a number of burned courthouses in the area.
One possible match is John Guthrie who was imported into the colony along with 40 other individuals by Col. Thomas Ludlow. The colonel’s widow was granted 2050 acres of land for bringing so many people to Virginia. No dates or circumstances of importation were specified. Thomas Ludlow’s estate was probated in York County in 1660. He came from a prominent family of English origin.
In 1658, John Guthrie of York County made a deposition, which stated that he was aged 22 or thereabouts at the time, making his estimated DOB 1636. That is at the early end of the date range for John Guthrie of Middlesex, so it is possible that this is the same man. John Guthrie of York served on a jury twice in 1658. A more detailed search of York County, VA records should be conducted to determine if that John Guthrie’s fate is known.
York County was an original shire or county created in 1634, its county seat being Yorktown. Most of the courthouse loose records prior to the American Revolutionary War are missing, but bound volumes of deeds, orders and wills still exist. Check out the county formation maps.
This man is most likely to be the John Guthrie who settled at King’s Creek off the York River (Later King and Queen County).
1664: CAPTAIN GUTHRIE of VIRGINIA (Likely Not a Match)
Old Rappahannock County, Virginia
Note that the entries on Captain Guthrie most likely refer to Captain John Guthrie, master of the Ewe and Lamb, a merchant vessel that transported passengers and convicts from Leith, Scotland to Virginia and Barbados during the 1660s and 1670s. There is a 1687 legal record in Brechin for the estate of a Captain John Guthrie that potentially belongs to this man. He does not appear to have been a permanent resident of Virginia
1666: CHRIST CHURCH PARISH FORMATION
1669: COURT ENTRY – CAPTAIN GUTHRIE ARRESTED (Likely Not a Match)
Lancaster County, Virginia
Capt. Guttrey being arrested to this court at ye suite of Mr. Sam Partridge for two men servants and not appearing to ans. sde suite
[This record most likely applies to Capt John Guthrie, master of the Ewe and Lamb who comes and goes from Virginia as part of his mercantile shipping business. He is not the planter from Middlesex.]
1669: COURT ENTRY – INDEBTED
Virginia, USA
It appearing to this Cort. by sufficient Oath that John Guttrey stands indebted unto Benoni Biship for 48 gall of tarr at 10 lb. p. gall It is ordered that ye same bee forthwith paide with costs.
Note: This entry specifically names a John Guttrey even if it does not specify that John Guttrey is the captain found in the 1664 and 1669 records.
1669: FORMATION of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA
Lancaster County, Virginia between 1669-1673
This fact is potentially important because it established approximately when Middlesex County was formed, which means that the Lancaster County entries for Captain / John Guttrey could potentially apply to the progenitor of GFG1A Branch B John Guthrie of Middlesex even if there is a better explanation.
1674: PROPERTY PURCHASE
Middlesex County, Virginia on 7 Sep 1674
Thomas Loe, planter, to John Gutteridge & Nicholas Paine, planters. 500-600 acres patented by Loe dated 9 Apr 1674.
This is most likely the earliest entry for John Guthrie of Middlesex.
1676: COURT ORDERS – LAWSUIT (Likely Not a Match)
Middlesex County, Virginia on 10 Apr 1676
William Edward, servt to David Allison x6 yrs, former Cabin Boy of Capt Guttery x7years who brought him to this country, sues for his freedom & granted.
[This record again most likely applies to Capt. Guthrie of the Ewe and Lamb.]
BEFORE 1683: POSSIBLE FIRST MARRIAGE to REBECCA (MNU)
There is no known marriage document for John Guthrie of Middlesex County, VA to Rebecca (MNU). There is instead a birth/baptismal record for Henry Guthrie, son of John and Rebecca. There is no other John Guthrie in the Christ Church Parish Register to be a parent to Henry, and the timing does not conflict with any other marriage or child’s birth.
1683-1690: CHRIST CHURCH PARISH MINISTER – REV DUELL PEAD
Prior to 1683 the parish may not have had a consistent minister. The reverend Duell Pead was brought to Christ Church parish in 1683 and remained there for 7 years before returning to England. Periods where the parish lacked a minister may show gaps in the records for marriages, births, and deaths.
1683: BIRTH of (PROBABLE) SON – HENRY GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 5 Aug 1683
CCP Register: Henry Guthridge ye sone of John and Rebe. Guthridge baptiz. 5 of August.
Henry’s death is not recorded in the CCPR. There is also no marriage record in the CCPR, or other notations in parish documents. The administration of the estate of a Henry Goodrich was granted to Thomas Haselwood in 1711 Middlesex County, Virginia.
1685: NEIGHBOR
Middlesex County, Virginia on 4 May 1685
Deed bet Henery Davis and James Ingrham for 100a in Middlesex lists John Gufferidge and Nicholas Paine as Neighbors.
BEFORE 1686: PRESUMED DEATH of REBECCA (MNU) GUTHRIE
If Rebecca was the wife of John Guthrie, she must have died before 1686, the year when John married Elizabeth Baskett.
1686: MARRIAGE to ELIZABETH BASKETT
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 6 Feb 1686
John Guthry & Elizth Basket both of this parish was marryed 6th ffeb. 1686.
Note that the record also mentions John Guthry is from Scotland.
1686-1688: WITNESS – ELIZABETH GUTTEY
Middlesex County, Virginia
DB2 (16 Jan 1679-27 Aug 1688) p.73 Elizabeth Guttey is a witness to James Attwood & wife Mary’s appt of Francis Weeks as their lawful atty to sel a tract of 140a to Thomas Stapleton.
1687: BIRTH & BAPTISM of DAUGHTER – ANN GUTTREY / GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 16 Oct 1687
Ann Guttrey ye daughr. of Jno. and Eliza. Guttrey was baptz. 16th of Octob. 1687.
It is the practice in Christ Church Parish to baptize infants about 1 month after birth, so Ann Guthrie was most likely born around 16 September. No further details are known about Ann. It is possible that she died in infancy or childhood. If so, her death is not recorded in the CCPR.
1687: COURT RECORDS of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA
Entry for 23 Nov 1687.
John Gutteridge listed as one of men thought capable by the court to serve as footmen and to find themselves armes.
1689: BIRTH & BAPTISM of SON – JOHN GUTHREY / GUTHRIE (II)
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 28 Jul 1689
John ye Sone of John & Eliza. Guthrey baptz. 28th July 1689.
Based on his baptismal date, John was probably born about the 28th of June. John Guthrie is the only one of John Guthrie & Elizabeth Baskett’s children who are known to have reached adulthood.
1691: BIRTH & BAPTISM of SON – RICHARD GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 3 Apr 1691
Richard the Sone of Jno. & Eliza. Guttrey was baptiz. the 3d of Aprill 1691.
Richard was most likely born about the 3rd of March 1691. No further data is know about Richard Guthrie.
1692: DEATH of a MINISTER
Rev. Matthew Lidford was chosen as minister in 1692, but soon died. he was then succeeded by Mr Grey.
1692: BIRTH & BAPTISM of SON – MASEY GUTHERY / GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 4 Sep 1692
Masey the Sone of Jno. and Eliza. Guthery was baptz. 4th of Septemb. 1692.
Masey’s DOB was probably about 4 August 1692. No further details are known about Masey Guthrie. The name Masey or Massey is a surname found within Middlesex County.
1692-1693: TRIAL of A PARISH MINISTER – REV SAMUEL GREY
During his time in Middlesex County, Virginia, the Reverend Samuel Grey, was judged to be a ‘most unworthy minister’ for causing the death of one of his own slaves by a severe whipping. This led to his resignation or expulsion in 1693 leaving another gap between established ministers for CCP.
1699-1704: MINISTERS YATES & YATES
Reverend Robert Yates served as CCP minister until 1703-4 when he returned to England in ill health. He was succeeded by his son Bartholowmew Yates who coninued his service until 1734.
1700: VIRGINIA COLONIAL RECORDS – OWED A DEBT
Middlesex County, Virginia on 3 Feb 1700
WB A p55: Inventory of Estate of Richard Willis, Gent. Debts owed include debt to John Gootery.
1701: BIRTH & BAPTISM of DAUGHTER – MARY GUTHERY / GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 23 Jan 1701/2
Listed in the CCP Register (Book) p54 as ‘Mary the Daughter of Jno. & Mary Guthery baptz. 23th of January 1701/2.
Mary was likely born 1 month prior to her baptism, so about 23 Dec 1700/1. The last record of Mary Guthrie found is 3 Jun 1718 when she is listed as the orphan of John Guttrich. The court ordered that Phillip Warwick was to pay Mary all such estate due to her as soon as she was of lawful age.
Note: There may be a typo in the CCPR transcript of original records or an original error naming the mother of Mary Guthrie. Note that she is listed as “Mary” instead of Elizabeth. This child was born 10 years after the last recorded birth for John & Elizabeth (Baskett) Guthrie.
1704: COURT ORDER – SUMMONS
Middlesex County, Virginia on 5 Jun 1704
Sheriff to summon the Surveyor of the Upper Precincts, John Gutteridge, to answer to the Grand Jury’s presentment against him.
1706: DEATH of JOHN GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia
1706/7: GUARDIANSHIP of JOHN GUTHRIE (II)
Middlesex County, Virginia
William Finney appointed guardian. “Know all men by these presents that I William Finney of County of Middlesex do give John Guttry two 2-year old heifers and their increase to him and his heirs forever.” Ack 3 Feb 1706.
Note 1: Guardians were typically appointed when underage children were orphaned (father deceased, not necessarily the mother, too) and the were to inherit something that required an adult to look out for their interests. In this case, John Guthrie (Jr) is the only one of John & Elizabeth’s children who was named in this 1706/7 request for appointment of a guardian. He was about 17 at the time. He may have been the oldest surviving son.
Note 2: William Finney is the presumed father of Elizabeth (Baskett) Guthrie’s illegitimate daughter Mary.
1708: MARRIAGE of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & SARAH STIFF
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 5 Jan 1708
John Gutterie & Sarah Stiff he 5th of January 1708
We don’t know anything about Sarah Stiff. It is supposed that she was a young woman since John Guthrie was only about 19 years old at the time of this marriage. She was most likely born between 1690-1693.
1708/9: DEATH of SARAH (STIFF) GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia (presumably)
No death date is noted for Sarah, but it would have been before August of 1710 when John Guthrie remarried. This marriage seems to have produced no children. There are no CCPR on that matter.
1710: MARRIAGE of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & JANE MITCHAM
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 4 Aug 1710
John Gutterie & Jane Mitcham 4th of August 1710
Jane’s surname may actually be Meacham instead of Mitcham. There are no specific clues in the CCPR as to her parents or age at the time of her marriage. John Guthrie was about 21 at the time, so it is likely that Jane was also a young bride of 16-21 years of age, estimating her DOB range as 1689-1694. There were 4 children born to this marriage recorded in the CCPR.
1711: COURT ORDER – JANE GUTTERY – WITNESS
Middlesex County, Virginia
Jane Guttery witness for John Aldin, James Meacham, and Elizabeth Minor, excrs of Robert Herman, Decd, Pts vs William Young, admr of Thomas Morris, deft. 4 days attendance & costs to be paid by ptfs.
1713: BIRTH of JANE – DAU. of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & JANE MITCHAM
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia abt. 7 Mar 1713
Jane was baptized on 7 March 1713, so her DOB was probably in February or March. No further data is known about Jane.

Baker v Guttery continued to next court
1715: COURT ORDER – ELIZABETH GUTTEREY (Widow)

1715: BIRTH & BAPTISM of DAUGHTER – MARY GUTTERY / GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 24 Aug 1715
“Mary–an illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Guttery.”
The father of Mary Guthrie is presumed to be William Finney, who remained close to the family after John Guthrie’s death and became guardian to son John. Upon William’s 1717 death he bequeathed items and livestock to Elizabeth Guthrie.
1715: COURT ORDER – ELIZABETH GUTTEREY (Widow)
Middlesex County, Virginia on 6 Dec 1715
Delinquent: Ordered that the Sheriff summon several persons to appear at next court. Ordered that Elizabeth Guttery be taken into custody till she gives security for her appearance.
Same Date:

1716: COURT ORDER – WALFORD v. GUTTERY
Middlesex County, Virginia on 3 Apr 1716
WALFORD v GUTTERY: Plaintiffs motion against the defendant’s estate continued to next court.
This entry clears up the identity of the John Guttery being sued. It mentions the defendant’s estate, so must refer to the deceased John Guthrie (The Immigrant) rather than his son, which is also likely why Elizabeth Guthrie was summoned to court in the two cases.
1716: COURT ORDER – WALFORD v. GUTTERY
Middlesex County, Virginia on 7 Aug 1716
WALFORD v GUTTERY: Order for appraisement of goods made on 5 Apr 1716. 2 tobacco casks, 450ft poplar planks, 210ft white oak planks.
1716: BIRTH of JOHN (III) – SON of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & JANE MITCHAM
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 16 August 1716
John Guthrie’s birth was recorded as 16 August 1716 with a baptismal date of 26 August 1716.
John married Mary Gest about 1743. No marriage record found. They had 2 daughters, Jane and Ann ‘Nanny’ Guthrie.
As the eldest son of the family, he was granted the administration of his stepmother, Mary (Shay) Guthrie’s estate upon her death in 1743. Letters of administration were granted in Feb 1744.
John was a bricklayer. In 1745 his half-brother Henry Guthrie was bound to him by the parish to learn the bricklayer’s trade and to learn to read and write. Unfortunately, John also died young at about 30 years of age in 1747.
1716: COURT ORDER – WALFORD v. GUTTERY

William Finney is presumed to be the father of Elizabeth Guthrie’s illegitimate daughter, Mary. He died in CCP on 26 Apr 1718 and was buried on 30 Apr 1718.
1718: BIRTH of NANNY – DAU. of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & JANE MITCHAM
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia
Nanny Guthrie was born on 31 Jan 1718 and baptized 8 Mar 1718. She married a Joseph Milby. No marriage recorded in the CCPR. However, a property record dated 1768 mentions that Nanny, the wife of Joseph, was the daughter of John Guthres. This couple was living in Middlesex County, VA in 1768 when they sold property and a slave.
Joseph Milby and Nanny his wife sell to Jeremiah Shepard for 10pounds, 15shillings and one negro girl 100 acres in Parish of Christ Church.
1718: GUARDIANSHIP of MARY GUTTRICH
Middlesex County, Virginia on 3 Jun 1718
This is probably Mary, the youngest daughter of John Guthrie & Elizabeth Guthrie who was born in 1701/2 who is now about 16 and therefore perhaps old enough to remind her guardian to pay her all parts of her father’s estate due her as soon as she becomes of lawful age? (I think it was 16 for girls, 18 for boys.)

Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 14 Feb 1722
William was born on 14 Feb and baptized 10 Mar 1722. He died at the age of 1 year.
The parish register names Mary as Wm’s mother, but his birth occurred 2 months before Jane’s DOD, so it is more likely that Jane was his biological mother and his birth was later recorded with Mary as his mother.
1722: DEATH of JANE (MITCHAM) GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 22 Apr 1722
Jane died on 22 April 1722 and was buried on the 24th.
1722: MARRIAGE of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & MARY SHAY

1723: BIRTH of GARRITT – SON of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & MARY SHAY
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 19 FEB 1723
Garritt was born on 19 Feb and baptized on 8 Mar 1723. The name of his spouse is unknown. He may have married outside of CCP. The sons attributed to him are mainly via presumed relationships due to common location, but the GFG1A YDNA profile has been confirmed for most. It is possible that Garritt lived for a time in Hanover County, VA as his presumed son John Guthrie (YDNA not tested) indicated he was born there. The first confirmed records for Garritt Guthrie begin in Orange County, NC in 1764, later in Caswell and then Person Counties. He died about 1805 in North Carolina.

1724: BIRTH & BAPTISM of DAUGHTER – ANNE GUTHRIE
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 6 Dec 1724
“Anne illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Guttery born ______ baptized Decemr ye 6 1724.”
It is possible that Anne was born closer to 1717 and baptized later on, but there is no confirmation found. If she was born at that earlier date, she is also likely to be a daughter of William Finney. If born in 1724, her father’s identity is not known, and mother Elizabeth Guthrie, widow of John Guthrie (The Immigrant) would be in her early 50s. Certainly possible to conceive at that age, but she would be at the end of her childbearing years.
1725: COURT RECORDS
Middlesex County, Virginia on 6 Jul 1725
Indenture made 2 Dec 1724 bet John Guttery of Middlesex, planter, and John Nicholls of King & Queen. Lease of land for 5 shillings sterling. 50 acres adjacent Dragon Swamp.
1726: BIRTH of HENRY – SON OF JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & MARY SHAY
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 8 Jan 1726
Henry was born on 8 Jan and baptized on 29 Jan 1726. He married Penelope Johnson, a Quaker, on 11 Jan 1755 in Louisa County, Virginia. She was officially disowned by the Quaker Community for marrying contrary to discipline. Henry was not a Quaker, so Penelope was shunned for it. Her mother, Agnes Johnson, was then condemned for entertaining her daughter on the day of the marriage, which was contrary to the advice of the Friends. The couple had a large family. Henry bough land in Bedford County, Virginia in 1764. He took the Oath of Allegiance required by the Virginia General Assembly and is credited with ferriage across the Staunton River during the Revolutionary War. Franklin County, VA was formed in 1785 from Bedford, and afterward Henry was listed as a resident of that county. He died in 1786 survived by his wife Penelope who died in 1815.

1729: BIRTH of WILLIAM & JAMES- SONS of JOHN GUTHRIE (II) & MARY SHAY
Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia on 19 Apr 1729
Twins William Guthrie & James Guthrie were born on 19 Apr 1729. They were baptized together on 11 May 1729.
Nothing further is known about James Guthrie. It is presumed that he died in infancy or early childhood because his twin, William, was later bound out for an apprenticeship and there is no indication that the same was done for James.
After his father’s death in 1733, when William was only about 3 or 4 years of age, he presumably lived with his mother, Mary (Shay) Guthrie. In 1740, when he was about 7, he was bound out to James Daniel, Jr as an apprentice shoemaker, and then in 1744 to Robert Daniel. No other documents identify this William Guthrie. He may have died before reaching adulthood or moved out of Middlesex County and remains untraced.
Caution! There are many online trees that have erroneously linked William Guthrie 1722VA-1798KY & Eleanor Harris Abbott’s line to this William Guthrie. Y-DNA testing has proven that the Guthrie-Abbott line originates with a different genetic group (GFG5), and is not related to this one.

MISTAKEN IDENTITIES
Quite a few online trees identify this John Guthrie as being a John Montrose Guthrie. Is there such a person? There are men named John Guthrie who were born in Montrose, Scotland.
There was also a Captain John Guthrie who transported prisoners and/or indentured servants to the colonies. No conclusive evidence that he was this man, but he has also been occasionally merged into this person’s data.

Findings:
The most important finding for the descendants of the Middlesex VA branch is the Y-DNA match to our VIP volunteer, a descendant of the Guthries of Craigie, which indicates that they share a common paternal ancestor somewhere on that historical Guthrie tree.
Since the exact birth date of John Guthrie of Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia is unknown, let’s use an estimate of his DOB. His eldest child with Elizabeth Baskett was born in 1687. If he was 20-50 at that time, his DOB would be 1637-1667. For the purposes of exploring the tree, consider a date of c1650.
The closest common ancestor would be a mutual father, then grandfather, then great-grandfather, etc.
The earliest genetically proven ancestor of our GFG1A-Branch A family is James Guthrie 1669-1711SCT who m. Christian Scot. Since James is of the same approximate generation as John of Middlesex, he cannot be the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA).
The next potential generation to find the MRCA is that of Rev John Guthrie, Minister of Arbirlot, and his wife Isobel Lamb. They have a son named John Guthrie born in 1664 who died 1741 in Angus. He was a merchant and was known in documents as John Guthrie of Westhall. Since this generation is already occupied by a John Guthrie of about the same age it is unlikely that Rev John Guthrie, Minister of Arbirlot is the MRCA.
The next potential MRCA would be Rev James Guthrie, 1590-1662, Minister in Kinnell and then Arbirlot who m. Isobel Durie. The children of this couple would potentially include the father of John Guthrie of Middlesex. There are 2 other known sons. One was a Guthrie who was Laird of Aldbar. The other was a James Guthrie who m. Margaret Connarsyde.
The further back you go on the Historical Guthrie Tree looking for potential MRCA, you have to add an additional missing generation between John Guthrie of VA and that ancestor.
An examination of results suggests that their Most Recent Common Ancestor would be 50% likely to be found within 10 generations and 95% likely within 20 generations. John’s generation is already 8-9 generations back for most of these participants, so that narrows the gap of additional generations to consider.

Based upon your original research should KIT: 867625 be listed here under GFG1A B ?
Thank you.
Hi Michael — Yes! I am in the process of reorganizing my admin notes on FTDNA to try to capture the Kit Numbers I missed the first time. There are 740+ members now and the notes were posted from your original Join Request rather than a final group assignment.
Thanks for all you do!
