The only Virginia county of record verified to be associated with William Guthrie is Hanover County where his son, Henry Guthrie, stated he was born. William is often mistakenly linked to the Guthrie family from early Middlesex County, Virginia. There is no genetic relationship between this William Guthrie and the family of John Guthrie of Middlesex, VA, nor is there any documentation linking him to that family. The void created by lost or non-existent records resulted in tangled trees.

Currently, the growing pool of Guthrie Family Group 5 genetic matches hints that it has a more distant history than the colonial shores of Virginia. Direct paternal line testing of some key lineages is needed to prove any shared connections. Whether or not there are any traceable lineages with a living male Guthrie to represent those Guthrie families is the question.

One potential progenitor of Guthrie Family Group 5 is the immigrant John Guthrie of King and Queen County, Virginia. This is a different man than John Guthrie of Middlesex County. Their matching names have been one of the main reasons for criss-crossing lineages as some have mistaken them as the same individual. The King and Queen line reportedly arrived in York County, Virginia from England rather than Scotland, with a presumption of earlier Scottish origins.

John Guthrie of King & Queen is said to be the father of Edward Guthrey, James Guthrie, Daniel Guthrie, and John Guthrie (who is also not either of the men from Middlesex, VA). Edward Guthrie is the man who is believed to be William Guthrie’s father. There are 2 major problems with proving that theory. Firstly, we have genetic evidence that another presumptive son of Edward Guthrey, namely Thomas Guthrie of King William and Cumberland Counties, VA who married Sarah Oakes, is of Guthrie Family Group 4. Edward Guthrie cannot be the biological father to both William Guthrie and Thomas Guthrie. Secondly, the paper trail between Edward and his potential descendants is thin and full of more theories than factual evidence.

Another potential set of parents for William Guthrie are also found in Middlesex, Virginia. David Guthrie and Susannah Thurston married there on 11 Oct 1723. Like Edward, they could have lived within the region and attended the parish church. There is no other documentation found on this couple. The names Susannah and Thurston are found among the names of William & Eleanor’s grandchildren by their eldest son Henry. The name David does not make a similar appearance, however.

There are several other lineages genetically matched to Guthrie Family Group 5, which suggests that William is not just the result of a paternal event or adoption. There are two major Guthrie family lines that do not currently have Y-DNA representation in the Guthrie DNA Project that are theorized to belong to GFG5:
— Descendants of Daniel Guthrie and Mary Little of Virginia and North Carolina
(Is this the same Daniel who was said to be a son of the immigrant John Guthrie of King & Queen, VA? Interrelated Families in Carteret County, NC and surrounding area.)
— Descendants of the Guthries of Thickety Creek, South Carolina (Matthew Guthrie & Elizabeth MNU; Frederick Guthrie & Mollie Louallen; William Guthrie & Clementine Thomas)

NOTES:
According to the ‘family records of Susannah Guthrie Batterton’, William and Eleanor married in Virginia in 1752. There is no notation of this marriage date on the transcription of the Batterton Family Bible. This date may be accurate, or it could be a long-standing accepted estimation based on the birth date of the eldest child in the family.

The theorized path of residences for William Guthrie’s ancestors would begin in York County, Virginia where the immigrant John Guthrie served on a jury and made a deposition in 1658. New Kent County, Virginia was formed from York in 1654. King and Queen County was formed from New Kent County on 16 April 1691. Records loss by fire in 1757 destroyed most of the colonial records. The immigrant, John Guthrie, patented land on 25 Oct 1695 in King and Queen County: 753 acres on the Matapony River also bounded by the York River. His presumed son Edward Guthrey who owned land where Gutteries Ferry was located crossing Mattapony and Pamunkey in 1702. The earliest location William Guthrie had been found documented was Hanover County, Virginia where his son Henry Guthrie attested to be his own birth location.

A newly found record may provide other clues. Although there are no other associated documents to verify this is the same William Guthrie, it does indicate that he was living in Hanover County at the same time this man was expected to be there during the early 1760s. William Guthrie and his family did not leave for Halifax, NC until 1766.
GUTTREY, WILLIAM & AGNES his WF to Perrin – p.733 – 17 Jul 1762 – IMG 425
William Guthrie & Agnes his wife of Parish of St Paul’s in Hanover County sold land in Henrico County in Parish of Henrico, Henrico County to Joseph Perrin, blacksmith, of same. Consideration of five shillings current money of Virginia. 200 acres of land in Henrico County.

Hanover County was formed from St Paul’s Parish in New Kent County in 1720. Could this be the same William Guthrie with an earlier wife? Are all children born prior to 1762 sons of Agnes rather than Eleanor (Harris) Abbott? Daughter Susannah, whose records list Eleanor as her mother, was born in 1767, so that scenario would still fit. It might also provide a longer time period for Eleanor’s first marriage to the unidentified Mr Abbott. Son Peter Guthrie was presumably named for Eleanor’s father, Peter Harris, and he was born in 1763. However, the William Guthrie married to Agnes might be another Guthrie considering the compact size of the region, unknown lines of descent, and multiple family groups.

If son Henry Guthrie was indeed born in Hanover County, Virginia, this indicates all children born prior to 1766 were most likely born there, too. The family then moved from Virginia to Halifax County, North Carolina until after the war. The remainder were born there.

The Revolutionary War Pension Application records of eldest son Henry Guthrie reveal that William Guthrie had a brother named Levi, for whom Henry served in the war as a substitute soldier.

The will of Peter Harris of King Wiliam Parish in Cumberland County, Virginia, dated 15 Feb 1771, probated 28 August 1775, named daughter Eleanor and her husband, William Guttery, granddaughter Mary, and his namesake, grandson Peter Guttery. A lawsuit brought by Peter Harris’ son, Henry Guthrie, challenged his father’s competence, possibly because he did not wait for his death to distribute shares of his estate to include his daughters in their inheritance.

On 15 November 1789, William Guthrie sold 400 acres of Halifax County, North Carolina land to John Andrew Garrett for 140 pounds. The family moved to the Lexington, Kentucky area. William Guthrie died in Madison County, Kentucky in 1798. His burial location is unknown. His widow Eleanor survived him by 18 years as her death came on 16 March 1816 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Her remains are buried at Batterton Cemetery in Paris, Bourbon, KY. The fieldstone lists her age as 82 (born 1734).

1722: BIRTH of WILLIAM GUTHRIE
William Guthrie was most likely born in Virginia. The birth date of 1722 is possibly an estimate. William’s exact birth location is unknown. The Revolutionary War Pension application of his son Henry Guthrie wrote “agreeable to my father’s Register I was born in Hanover County and state of Virginia the 10 day of December in the year of our lord 1754” which seems to have been inferred to be William’s birth location, too. A court house fire destroyed most early Hanover, VA documents that might have provided clues.

Hanover formed in 1720 from New Kent
Cumberland from Goochland 1749

The parents of William Guthrie are unknown. There are no genetic clues at this time pointing toward any earlier couple within GFG5, although there may be a connection to the Guthrie family of Carteret County, NC, which goes back to Daniel Guthrie c1690-After1753NC & Mary Little.

Some speculate that William’s parents were David Guthrie and Susannah Thurston who married 11 Oct 1723 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia. There are no other documents found for David in that county, and there is no evidence of David being tied to the GFG1A line from that county, which leaves this theory open as a possibility. The middle name of Thurston was given to one of William’s granddaughters, the daughter of Henry Guthrie, Eleanor Thurston Guthrie.

1734: BIRTH of ELEANOR HARRIS
Eleanor was born in Virginia about 1734. A fieldstone lists her as age 82 at her death in 1816. Eleanor was the daughter of Peter Harris, who was living in King William Parish, Cumberland, Virginia at the time of his death in 1775 naming William, Eleanor, and two of his Guttery grandchildren in the will. Peter Guttery is likely his namesake. The other grandchild named was Mary Guttery, possibly a namesake for his wife.

1752: MARRIAGE of WILLIAM GUTHRIE & ELEANOR HARRIS ABBOTT
Hanover County, Virginia, USA
This date would make Eleanor about 18 at the time of her marriage to William. There is no data found on her marriage to anyone by the Abbott surname. Could that name be an error, or was there really a Mr Abbott? If so, the marriage was likely a short one if the 1752 date is accurate. (See 1762 Henrico deed)

1754: BIRTH of SON – HENRY C GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia
Henry was born on 10 Dec 1754 in Hanover County, VA. He listed this place in his Revolutionary War Pension Application. There is some talk about whether he was a twin to John Guthrie, whose estimated DOB is listed here as 1757. No proof found.

1757: BIRTH of SON – JOHN GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia
This is an estimated birthdate for John Guthrie. Some say he might have been a twin to Henry C Guthrie, whose known DOB was 10 Dec 1754. No proof found.

1759: BIRTH of SON – REUBEN GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1761: BIRTH of SON – SAMUEL GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1763: BIRTH of SON – PETER GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1765: BIRTH of SON – JESSE GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia

1766: REMOVED to HALIFAX COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Documents reveal that the family lived in Halifax, NC until after the American Revolution.

1767: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SUSANNAH GUTHRIE
Hanover County, Virginia or Halifax County, North Carolina
Susannah Guthrie was born about the time that the family was moving from Virginia to North Carolina. Although trees primarily list Virginia, her birth on 27 Sep 1767 more likely would have occurred in NC according to the timeline her older brother Henry gave about the family’s move to NC.

1768: PROBATE (WITNESS)
Halifax County, North Carolina on 19 April 1768
William Guthrie was a witness to the Last Will & Testament of William Bennett. (Halifax Will Book).

1769: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARY GUTHRIE
Halifax County, North Carolina

1770: PROPERTY PURCHASE – HALIFAX COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Halifax County, North Carolina, USA on 6 March 1770
Sherwood Grimsey of Dobbs Co to William Guthrie of Cumberland Co, Va – 100 pds Virginia money, 300 acres adj Burnett, Rocky Branch, Thomas Gill, Gum Branch, Martin. Signed by Sherwood Grimsley and Ann Grimsley.

Note that this entry indicates William Guthrie was from Cumberland County, Virginia perhaps showing that the family had lived there for a time prior to moving further south to North Carolina. Cumberland is a common location for GFG4 descendants of Thomas Guthrey, whose numbers do include a William Guthrie.

1773: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
Halifax County, North Carolina
There is speculation based on the 1773 estimate whether Elizabeth was a twin of Anna.

1773: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ANNA GUTHRIE
Halifax County, Virginia on 7 April 1773

1775: DEATH of FATHER-in-LAW – PETER HARRIS
King William Parish, Cumberland, Virginia, USA
The Will of Peter Harris of King William Parish dated 15 Feb 1771, probated 28 Aug 1775, names daughter Eleanor and her husband William Guttery, and grandchildren Mary and Peter Guttery.

“When Peter Harris died…his son Henry challenged his father’s last will as made while incompetent.” Peter Harris did not wait until he died to distribute shares of estate. Daughters inheritance given directly to children. Read about the legal battle surrounding Peter Harris’ will in ‘Inheritance and Wealth in America‘ by Robert K Miller and Stephen J McNamee.

Note that Peter Harris was living in Cumberland, VA, too.

About 1775: MARRIAGE of SON – JOHN GUTHRIE
Unknown location, possibly NC
John Guthrie married Anna Smith, presumably before the birth of their eldest child around 1776-1780.

1788: PROPERTY SALE – HALIFAX COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
Halifax, NC on 15 Nov 1788
William Guthrie sells 400 acres to John Andrew Garrett , both of Halifax County, NC. Consideration: 140 pounds current money of Virginia.

1816: DEATH of ELEANOR (HARRIS) GUTHRIE
Bourbon County, Kentucky, USA on 16 March 1816
Eleanor is buried at the Batterton Cemetery in Paris, Bourbon, Kentucky. She was 82 years old.

William Guthrie is frequently found listed as a descendant of GFG1A’s John Guthrie and Elizabeth Baskett. These two families are genetically unrelated.

Descendants are also searching for information on Eleanor Harris Abbott. As we know, she was born in Virginia and was the daughter of Peter Harris. However, the Abbott connection suggests that she was previously married to a man by that surname prior to marrying William Guthrie. Some trees erroneously list her as an Abbott by birth and include her as being a member of the Abbottstown, PA family. One GFG5 researcher has found evidence to counteract that supposition. A book entitled, A History of Abbottstown, by Willis W Eisenhart (1953) reveals details on the family of the founder, John Abbott, who indeed had a daughter named Elinor. However, that daughter married James Mackey and they resided in Pennsylvania for the remainder of their lives. The Abbott marital connection for GFG5’s ancestor remains unidentified.

Findings:

Y-DNA Kit 157554 is currently a Y37 marker test showing Group Mode DNA results 37/37 for Guthrie Family Group 5.

The other kits for the group show a few unique mutations that do not appear to be inherited pattern markers.

Guthrie Family Group 5 does not match any of the other group profiles, so it has its own direct paternal ancestry. We need Y-DNA from the Carteret, NC line to determine if they are a match.

  1. A drumroll indeed! And kudos! Information about GFG5 has been hard to come by. The William Guthrie (1722-1798) to son John (c1757-1812), with a son of John named Shadrack, could work for me. Could add two new generations to my lineage. My family tree has always stopped at Shadrack. The only record of Shadrack’s birth/birth place is the 1850 Census, which listed his birth year as “abt 1772” and his birth place as “S.C.” Family lore focused on Spartanburg, S.C. as the birth place. Both the birth year and birth place could be directionally true but “off.” Spartanburg not founded until about 1785. It is due south of Buncombe County, NC. As the NC-SC state line was not finally settled until 2016, Shadrack may have been from then-Buncombe County. John’s marriage to Anna (1775) does not work with the “abt 1772” birth year in the 1850 Census…but it may only be off a few years. Thanks. As I’ve told you in the past, I enjoy your posts. I especially enjoyed this one.
