NOTES:

Charity Guthrie’s full name is undocumented. A typed report of her marriage record to Samuel Nixon lists her middle initial as “A”, but a handwritten property record (1868 Book CC-375) lists it as “E”.

Charity’s marriage to Samuel M Nixon did not occur until she was 31 years old. Both of her parents had died by that time with her mother’s death coming in 1868. That same year, Charity and her brothers Canulem H Guthrie and Christopher F Guthrie sold the property linked above. They had obtained this land from a William Guthrie whose relationship is not documented within the record. William was at that time deceased, and these 3 siblings had either inherited or purchased the property together. The tract was in Carteret County on the North River Road containing 12 acres

The name Charity Guthrie is not found in the 1870 census of Carteret County, but she was there in 1874 for her marriage to Samuel M Nixon They were documented in the 1880 census with their son Edward.

The date and location of Charity and Samuel’s deaths are also unknown.

The name Charity Nixon shows up in The Weekly Record for Beaufort, NC on Friday, 9 Dec 1887 as one of many poor locals to whom funds were allowed for their support. She is on a similar list the following year on Friday, 23 Nov 1888.

Their only known son, Edward Nixon, was still in Carteret County for his marriage in 1899, which took place in Diamond City.

NIXON CHILDREN: 1
Y-DNA PROJECT PARTICIPANTS: N/A – Female Guthrie
AUTOSOMAL DNA PARTICIPANTS: None

CHILD 1: EDWARD NIXON
Born 6 June 1880 NC – Died 8 November 1956 NC
Spouse 1: Hettie May Willis m. 24 July 1899 in Diamond City, Carteret, NC
Spouse 2: Hannah Marie (Lewis) Styron m. 13 Sep 1923 in Beaufort, Carteret, NC (divorced?)
Spouse 3: Mary Elizabeth (Phillips) Lewis (presumably m. bef. 1930)

Edward Nixon appears with his parents in the 1880 census and was listed as 1 year of age. When he was 19 years old, Edward married Hettie Willis. They lived in various locations in Carteret County where he worked in the fishing industry as a fisherman. They rented a farm and/or house through 1910 and by 1920 owned their own house on Harkers Island. He also served as a private in Company B1 North Carolina Infantry during the Spanish American War.

Four sons and two daughters, plus one of unidentified gender who died in infancy or early childhood. Hattie died in 1922 and was buried at Old Harker Cemetery on the Point, Harkers Island, Carteret, NC.

There is no notation on the Find-a-Grave site nor an obituary to sum up the remainder of Edward Nixon’s life. The records of Carteret County, NC list a marriage for an Edward Nixon born about 1880 to Hannah Marie Styron (nee Lewis) in 1923. By the 1930 census, Hannah is living with her son, Manly Styron, and Edward Nixon born about 1880 is listed with another “wife” named Mary. The application for his military headstone was requested by Mary Nixon. Presumably Edward and Hannah divorced between 1923 and 1930, and Edward married Mary Elizabeth (Phillips) Lewis. They had a son and 2 daughters.
