NOTES:
Maybe the new residence in Cumberland County was not yet ready because family tradition states that William Guthrey was born at Flint Hill, King William, Virginia. There may also be some confusion because one of our sources, American Guthrie and Allied Families, p.39 tells us “(William) received from his father, by deed and by legacy, a large part of the latter’s land “Flint-Hill” on which he lived.”
William Guthrey was reportedly a soldier of the American Revolution, but no verified service records have been attributed to him.
William Guthrey married Rebecca Noel in Buckingham, Virginia on 25 November 1778. Note that the Buckingham County Courthouse was completely destroyed by fire in 1869, which makes discovering details on the Noel family challenging. Online trees appear to have multiple options listed as Rebecca’s parents.
It appears that William and Rebecca settled in Cumberland County after their marriage. The first notation appears to be a tithable list for 1782 listing William Guthrey: 4 whites, 6 blacks.
Thomas Guthrey was preparing for his final years by conveying property to his son on 17 May 1784 for a nominal cost. For the sum of 5 shillings paid by son William Guttery, grants unto him “after my death” a tract of land on the south side of Pidy Creek containing 260 acres. (Cumberland Co Deeds liber 15 folio 37)
Another Cumberland County tithable list in 1784 lists William Guthrey with 7 whites, 1 dwelling, 5 other buildings.
There is no 1790 or 1800 census for Virginia. The 1810 census of Cumberland Virginia lists the William Gutherey Household on 6 August 1810 with: 1M 45 and over, 1F 26-44, 1F 16-25, and 13 Slaves.
The 1820 Census for Cumberland County lists only the household of a William Guthrey Junior. The “Jr” is difficult to read, but there is no female enumerated of the right age to be William Sr’s wife Rebecca, so this may indeed be the household of their son William ‘Buck’ Guthrey.
William Guthrey died in 1826, no specific DOD known. Probate records begin that year.

The widow Rebecca Guthrey is listed as the Head of Household during the 1830 census of Cumberland VA:
1F 40-49, 1M 20-29, with 4 Slaves.
Note that William’s wife was born in 1761 and would have been about 69. This may not be her, or she may be listed in the wrong age category.
Rebecca (Noel) Guthrey died on 5 January 1836 in Cumberland, VA. Estate probated as follows…

GUTHREY CHILDREN: 4
Y-DNA Project Participants: YES
Autosomal DNA Participants: YES

CHILD 1: JOHN GUTHREY
1779VA – 1856VA
Spouse 1: Nancy Jane Palmore (LRG lists her as Elizabeth Palmore, p.45)
Spouse 2: Mary ‘Polly’ Ayers
Spouse 3: Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Ayers
‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ indicates that John Guthrey was the youngest of William and Rebecca’s two sons, but the dates of birth and estimates presented list him as the elder. John was born on 22 September 1779, which is close to the ‘about 1780’ year listed during the 1850 census. The Virginia Death Register listed his birth year as 1775.
Palmore probate records indicate that John Guthrey’s wife was Nancy rather than Elizabeth Palmore. She was born about 1778 and died in 1819, and was the mother of the majority of John’s children. Sometime between 1820 and 1830, John married a second time to Mary ‘Polly’ Ayres. They had one daughter together, Martha Ann. After Polly’s death, John married Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Ayers, about 1831. They had one son together, Joseph Lee Guthrie.
The 1810 Census of Cumberland County, Virginia: John Guthery Household – 6 August 1810
1F 45 and over, 1M and 1F 26-44, 2M and 2F under 10, with 9 Slaves.
Since both of John’s parents are still alive and enumerated elsewhere, the older female is unidentified. The couple of 26-44 would be John and Nancy (born 1766-1784), children: William (1800), Rebecca (1804), Elizabeth (1807), and John (1810).
Wife Nancy reportedly died in or about 1819, but she is more likely to be the spouse listed in the 1820 census than Polly who did not have a child with John until 1830. The William & Nancy Palmore probate records mentioning John Guthrey and wife Nancy as legatees include Nancy in 1810, but do not by 1828.
The 1820 Census of Cumberland County, Virginia: John Guthrey Household – 7 August 1820
1M and 1F 26-44, 1F 16-25, 1M and 1F 10-15, 2M under 10, with 12 Slaves; 7 Engaged in Agriculture
John and Nancy/Polly (born 1776-1794), Rebecca (1804), Elizabeth (1807) and John (1810), James (1813), and Daniel (1817)
The 1830 Census of Northern District, Buckingham, Virginia: John Guthrey Household
1M 40-49, 1F 30-39, 1M 10-14, with 20 Slaves
This places John in a younger age category. He should be 52.
John married Mary ‘Polly’ Ayres with whom he had a daughter, Martha Ann, born 24 April 1831. Polly died that day.
The 1840 census of Northern District, Buckingham, Virginia: John Guthrey Household
1M 60-69, 1F 30-39, 2M and 2F under 5, with 16 Slaves. 8 in Agriculture, 3 in Manufacture and Trade
The 1850 Census of District 1, Buckingham, Virginia lists the John Guthrey Household:
John Guthrey, male, white, 70, born about 1780, Farmer (Agriculture), Real Estate 2000
Elizabeth Guthrey, female, white, 38, born about 1812
Martha A Guthrey, female, white, 19, born about 1831
Joseph L Guthrey, male, white, 16, born about 1834, Laborer, Industry Not Reported, Attended School
Mary S Guthrey, female, white 14, born about 1836
Poindexter Guthrey, male, white, 12, born about 1838
Emily I Guthrey, female, white 11, born about 1839
Nathan P Guthrey, male, white, 9, born about 1841
Nancy C Guthrey, female, white, 2, born about 1848
John Guthrey died in Buckingham County, Virginia on 30 November 1856. His widow Elizabeth lived until 1902. There were two additional children for this couple listed on the 1860 census: Kesiah and Mathias.

“William Guthrie moved to Buckingham County some time after the birth of his oldest child. He was popularly known as “Buck” Guthrie. He died in Buckingham County in 1848.” (LRG’s AGAF, p.39)
The 1810 Census of Buckingham County, Virginia lists the William Guthrey household for 6 August 1810:
1M 26-44 (1766-1784), 1M and 1F 16-25 (1785-1794), 1M 10-15 (1795-1800), 2 F Under 10, with 7 Slaves.

CHILD 3: NANCY ANN GUTHREY / GUTHRIE
1783VA – 1822VA
Spouse 1: James White
Spouse 2: Gulielmus Coleman Jr
Nancy Ann Guthrie was born to William and Rebecca (Noel) Guthrie on 1 February 1783. She was 20 years old at her first marriage to James White on 8 December 1803. They had one daughter, Sarah Howard White, born on 5 September 1804 in Buckingham County, Virginia. Note that Sarah married a Coleman. John Stanback Coleman married Sarah White on 29 Oct 1822 in Cumberland, Virginia. Nancy’s husband, James White, died before 1812, but most likely closer to 1804 as there are no other documented children.
On 1 July 1812, the “Widow White”, namely Nancy Ann (Guthrie) White married Gulielmus Coleman Jr. They resided in Cumberland County, Virginia. Their family included five sons and a daughter: John Baptist, James W, Virgil, Ann Rebecca, and Alexander Gulielmus ‘Elmus’ Coleman.
The family transcribed in Cumberland VA as the Household of “Gulielmus Coleman Junior” is actually that of his father GC “Senior”: 1M and 1F 45 and over, 1F 16-25, with 14 slaves.
Gulielmus Coleman Jr’s household is found in Prince Edward County, Virginia in 1820:
1M and 1F 26-44, 1F 10-15, 2M and 1F under 10, 1 Slave, 1 engaged in agriculture, 1 engaged in manufacturing.
Nancy Ann (Guthrie) Coleman died between 1822 and 1826.
The widower, Gulielmus Coleman Jr, married again on 20 March 1826 in Cumberland County, Virginia to another woman named Nancy Guthrey. There has been much confusion online about her identity primarily because her father’s lineage was seemingly forgotten. Trees have mistakenly identified his second wife as Nancy Turner Guthrey, the daughter of William ‘Buck’ Guthrie, which would mean he married his niece. This is not the case. His second wife, Nancy Guthrey, was the daughter of Henry and Patience ‘Patsy’ (MNU) Guthrey. Their marital relationship is documented in family probate records.
Gulielmus and his second wife were parents to 2 sons and 3 daughters: Judith Anderson, David M, Josiah, Marietta, and Nannie Coleman.
Guilielmus Coleman Jr died in 1856 and his second wife Nancy after 1870.
Because both Nancy Ann Guthrie (daughter of William & Rebecca (Noel) Guthrey) and Nancy Guthrey (daughter of Henry & Patience (MNU) Guthrey) were cousins descending from common ancestors Thomas Guthrey and Sarah Oakes, there will be Autosomal DNA Matches to multiple descendant Guthrie lines.

CHILD 4: SARAH NOEL GUTHREY / GUTHRIE
1786VA – 1836VA
Spouse: James Apperson
Sarah Noel Guthrey, also known as Sally, was born on 28 January 1786. William Guthrey gave written consent for his daughter to marry James Epperson, and John Guthrey provided surety for the marriage bond. The couple married on 29 August 1805 in Cumberland County, Virginia.
They had 5 sons and 3 daughters born between 1806 and 1829. Their children’s names are documented in the Apperson Harris Turner Family Bible Record.
The 1810 Census places them in Buckingham County, Virginia: James Apperson – 6 Aug 1810
1M 26-44, 1F 16-25, 1M and 1F under 10; with 6 Slaves
The 1820 Census lists the James Apperson Household in New Canton, Buckingham, Virginia
1M and 1F 26-44, 1M and 1F 10-15, 2M and 2F under 10, with 8 Slaves; 1 engaged in Agriculture

1M 40-49 and 1F 50-59, 2F 20-29, 1M 15-19, 2M under 5, with 14 Slaves
Sally died on 5 January 1836.
