The name Shadrach is not that uncommon in the Colonial South. There are quite a few men by some variation of that given name in my research tree. Six of them also have the Guthrie surname. These men primarily originate with two Guthrie lineages from the same Family Group: GFG5.

  1. Shadrick Guthry 1772SC-1850MS & Malinda Badley/Ruah Ann Roberts
  2. Shadrack Guthrie 1785GA-1826 & Florence Chambers

Branch C’s Shadrick Guthry has no confirmed set of parents, but the YDNA of his descendants matches GFG5.

The second Shadrack Guthrie is the son of John Guthrie & Anna Smith, and therefore the grandson of GFG5 Branch A’s William Guthrie & Eleanor Abbott.

The other men named Shadrach Guthrie in my research tree are known descendants of one of these two lines… with one exception. The fact that the name is exclusively connected to GFG5 lineages may be a huge clue to the Guthrie families associated with the Thickety Creek area of Spartanburg, South Carolina. They too mention a Shadrach Guthrie in property records associated with the other Guthries in that area. I theorize that he may be Shadrick Guthry.

On 9 September 1754, two families had gathered to celebrate a wedding at Buffalo Creek. Thickety Creek was in close proximity. A Shawnee attack occurred at the house of John Gutrey on the North Side of Broad River on Buffalo Creek 16 persons were killed and 10 not found. Bodies and livestock were piled up and burned. John Guthrie died in 1754, so he is not the father of Frederick, Matthew, and presumably Shadrach of Thickety Creek, but it is likely that he was associated with the family.

We need Y-DNA from a Guthrie male who descends from the Thickety Creek Guthries. The family of Frederick Guthrie 1763-1848 & Mary ‘Mollie’ Louallen has the best documentation.

NOTES:
Wife Malinda’s maiden name is now in question having been previously sourced from random trees. There is no known document listing her maiden name. No marriage record has been found between Shadrick Guthry and Malinda Badley or any document citing the Badley surname. Instead, a Warren County, KY marriage record lists Shadrick / Shederick Guthry and Linda Thompson on 19 July 1802, with additional record of consent by her father Neideman Thompson. The timing is right to be the marriage for this Shadrick Guthry and the wife of his children born starting in 1804 KY. The only document known to list his wife’s name is the 1830 sale of their Hickman., KY property wherein Malinda Guthry made her mark to consent to the sale relinquishing her dower rights. Sounds like there is a strong possibility that Malinda Badley is actually Malinda ‘Linda’ Thompson.

Shadrick’s second wife, Ruah, is also a bit of a mystery when records are compared with family tree data. Some descendants list her as the daughter of Russel and Jane (Thomas) Ayres indicating that she was 1st married to an unidentified man of the Roberts surname. No Ayres-Roberts marriage record has been found, nor any other obvious documentation linking Ruah to the Ayres family. (Share if you have some.).
Ruah Roberts and Thomas Mazy married on 24 Dec 1821 in Jefferson, AL. She later married Shadrick Guthry in Yalobusha, MS.

1772: BIRTH of SHADRICK GUTHRY
Colonial South Carolina
The 1880 census of son Shadrack Guthrie indicates that his father was born in South Carolina.

Based on his estimated DOB in 1772, Shadrach would most likely have been born in Ninety-Six District, SC, which was created on 29 July 1769 as the westernmost of seven original districts within the Province of South Carolina. Its borders included Abbeville, McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda, Greenwood, Laurens, Union, and Spartanburg Counties, much of Cherokee and Newberry counties, and small portions of Aiken and Greenville counties. The Act of 1785 subdivided these main districts into counties. The Ninety-Six District was given the county of Abbeville, Edgefield, Laurens, Newberry, Spartanburg, and Union. In 1791, the district lost Union and Spartanburg counties to the newly formed Pinckney District.

Shadrick may be the “Shadrach Gutery” living among the Guthries in Thickety Creek, Spartanburg, SC. Along with Matthew Gutery, Shadrach Gutery was listed as a witness to a 7 Feb 1795 deed between Lucy Hearne and Joseph Price. Note that one of Shadrick and Malinda’s sons is also named Matthew, so the naming patterns definitely fit the family.

Note that Find-a-Grave (user-submitted data) erroneously lists this person as the son of John Guthrie (1756-1822) and Betty Ann Allen. That couple is linked to GFG4, and would not be the parents of a son with GFG5 Y-DNA.

1795: WITNESS to SALE of PROPERTY (POSSIBLE MATCH)
Thickety Creek, Spartanburg, South Carolina on 7 February 1795
7 Feb 1795 Spartanburg Co. SC p 200-201 Lucy HEARNE to Joseph PRICE 120 ac Thickety Cr–Wit: Mathew GUTERY, Shadrach GUTERY

Looking at the property records for Spartanburg, SC, it does not appear that Shadrick Guthry was a land owner there. He is associated with the family living in the Thickety Creek area. Presumably, he is one of the younger members of the family and moved west to Kentucky when the opportunity came.

Before 1804: MARRIAGE of SHADRICK GUTHRY & MALINDA BADLEY
South Carolina or Kentucky, presumably

Family researchers claim that Shadrick Guthry’s first wife was named Malinda Badley. Her given name is indeed documented in an 1830 land sale in Hickman County, KY when Malinda Guthry consented to relinquish her dower rights to the property. The document does not include her maiden name. No marriage record has been found for Shadrick Guthry and Malinda Badley.

However, there is a marriage record for Shadrick Guthrey and a Linda Thompson on 19 July 1802 in Warren County, KY. The timing is right to be this couple. Linda could easily be short for Malinda. The origin of the Badley surname is technically unknown. The marriage consent indicates that Linda is a daughter of Neideman Thompson.

Findings:
The Big-Y Tester for GFG5-Branch C also matches Big-Y results for two other testers. The closer genetic match is GFG5-Branch H listed as Haplogroup R-FTE68872 with a likely MRCA about 1697. The other participant matching GFG5 is indicated to branch off at an earlier generation in the group with the MRCA about 1479. See Group Time Tree.

All three Y-DNA matches descending from Shadrick Guthry share a unique ‘marker of inheritance’ DYS413 = 21 instead of the Group 5 Mode result of 23.

Kit 129125 has tested at the Y67 marker level and matches Guthrie Family Group 5. He descends from Shadrick Guthry and his 2nd wife, Ruah Ann Roberts. There are 2 mutations compared to Group Mode DNA that are unique to himself. DYS456=15 (instead of 16) and DYS413a=21 (instead of 23).

Kit 905025 is now a Y67 marker test after a recent upgrade also matching GFG5. The participant is a descendant of Shadrick Guthry via his 1st wife Malinda Badley. He has 2 mutations compared to Group Mode DNA. CDYi = 37 instead of 36. This variance is a fast moving marker shared by Kit 20261 – GFG5 – Branch G. He also shares the mutation at DYS413a=21 (instead of 23) with Kit 129125, above, indicating that this could be a pattern marker that indicates inherited genetic changes.

Kit 898982 provides some Autosomal DNA evidence suggesting the Guthrie families of Thickety Creek, SC may be associated with GFG5.
