ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG5 BRANCH C
The name Shadrach is not that uncommon in the Colonial South. There are quite a few men by some variation of that given name in my research tree. Six of them also have the Guthrie surname. These men primarily originate with two Guthrie lineages:
- Shadrick Guthry 1772SC-1850MS & Malinda Badley/Ruah Ann Roberts
- Shadrack Guthrie 1785GA-1826 & Florence Chambers
Branch C’s Shadrick Guthry has no confirmed set of parents, but the YDNA of his descendants matches GFG5.
The second Shadrack Guthrie is the son of John Guthrie & Anna Smith, and therefore the grandson of GFG5 Branch A’s William Guthrie & Eleanor Abbott.
The other men named Shadrach Guthrie in my research tree are known descendants of one of these two lines… with one exception. The fact that the name is exclusively connected to GFG5 lineages may be a huge clue to the Guthrie families associated with the Thickety Creek area of Spartanburg, South Carolina. They too mention a Shadrach Guthrie in property records associated with the other Guthries in that area. I theorize that he may be this Shadrick Guthry.
On 9 September 1754, two families had gathered to celebrate a wedding at Buffalo Creek. Thickety Creek was in close proximity. A Shawnee attack occurred at the house of John Gutrey on the North Side of Broad River on Buffalo Creek 16 persons were killed and 10 not found. Bodies and livestock were piled up and burned. John Guthrie died in 1754, so he is not the father of Frederick, Matthew, and presumably Shadrach of Thickety Creek, but it is likely that he was associated with the family.
We need Y-DNA from a Guthrie male who descends from the Thickety Creek Guthries. The family of Frederick Guthrie 1763-1848 & Mary Louallen has the best documentation.

ORIN GUTHRIE
1804KY-1854TX
Orin Guthrie, the son of Shadrick Guthry and Malinda Badley, was born on 28 Oct 1804 in Kentucky. He was a reverend and farmer. Orin married first to Nancy Boyd on 20 Jan 1827 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. No children. She must have died within a year or two of their marriage. Orin remarried on 23 Jan 1829, also in Hardeman, to Elizabeth Davis. Most of the children were born in Kentucky, but it looks like the youngest might have been Alabama. Between 1841-1850 the family moved to Lavaca County, Texas. Orin Guthrie died there 9 Oct 1854. His widow, Elizabeth, lived until 23 Mar 1892 passing away in Charco, Goliad, Texas.

WILLIAM EDWARD GUTHRIE
1809-1891TX
The second child of Shadrick Guthry & Malinda Badley was born 31 August 1809, but his birth location is unclear. Based on what we think we know about the family emigration from SC, his birthplace should probably be in Kentucky. Alternate locations are the Indiana Territory and Illinois. William was twice married with children from each of those wives. First, to Mary Ann Beasley, about 1832 in KY, by whom he had 4 children. She died in 1838. Secondly to his wife’s sister, Etheldra Ruth Beasley, on 25 or 27 Feb 1841 in Benton County, TN, by whom he had 10 children. About 1837, between the two marriages, William spent time in Mississippi. Although he married Etheldra in TN, it looks like their early children were born in MS. Son Jeremiah Guthrie, born in 1852, is the first listing his birthplace in Texas. The family moved to Lavaca and later Bell County, Texas. William died in Killeen, Bell, Texas on 11 Mar 1891. His widow died there 13 Dec 1904. Both are buried at the Killeen City Cemetery.

ALLEN GUTHRIE
1812KY-1852MS
Allen Guthrie was born about 1812 in Kentucky. He appears to be married by 1840. The Lafayette, MS census lists him as a M20-29 with a F15-19. His wife was Sarah E Stuart. They were listed in Pontotoc, MS in 1860 with their sons. Allen died in Mississippi in 1852. His widow Sarah moved to Arkansas and lived with their son Owen Guthrie and family. She died in 1896.

SHADRACK GUTHRIE
1821KY-1888TX
Shadrack Guthrie was born in Kentucky about 1821. He moved to Lavaca, Texas with his father, stepmother and siblings. Twice married. Rachel Harbor was his first wife. They married in Lavaca on 19 Aug 1856 and had 3 children. They moved back to Mississippi and were located there during the 1860 census in Frairs Point, Coahoma, MS. After Rachel’s death in 1870, Shadrack moved the family back to Lavaca County, Texas where he married Amanda Mira Culpepper on 23 Aug 1872. They moved to Salado, Bell County, Texas where Shadrack died on 18 Sep 1888. Amanda, who was 22 years younger than her husband, lived until 1 April 1942. She died in Waco, McLennan County, TX, but was buried at Salado Cemetery.

MATTHEW GUTHRIE
1824KY-Unknown
The last of Shadrick Guthry & Malinda Badley’s children, Matthew Guthrie was born in Kentucky about 1824. His DOD is listed as being between 1848-1850 and a notation about being ‘lost in a skiff on the Mississippi River’. I do not find him in the 1850 census. Ancestry hints include Mexican War muster rolls for a Mathew Guthrie, private, Capt. J Preston’s Co (K), Mounted Regiment Arkansas Infantry July 1846 – Dec 1847. It is possible that these documents related to this man, but that remains unconfirmed.
One interesting fact is his name: Matthew Guthrie. This is not a common name among Guthrie men during the 1700s. It is found one other place: Thickety Creek, South Carolina. One of the men theorized to be Shadrick’s brother is named Matthew Guthrie.

RANSOM JOHNSON GUTHRIE
1849MS-1930LA
Ransom is a name that has cropped up in a couple of descendant lines, so is a potential for family association.

Ransom’s first wife was Louissa D Varner, whom he married about 1868 in MS. She was the mother of his children. She died about 1898. His second marriage to Sarah Jane Lavina Martin took place when he was about 49 years of age. Not long after the marriage they moved to Winn Parish, Louisiana. Findings:
Kit 129125 has tested at the Y67 marker level and matches Guthrie Family Group 5. He descends from Shadrick Guthry and his 2nd wife, Ruah Ann Roberts. There are 2 mutations compared to Group Mode DNA that are unique to himself. DYS456=15 (instead of 16) and DYS413a=21 (instead of 23).
Kit 905025 is now a Y67 marker test after a recent upgrade also matching GFG5. The participant is a descendant of Shadrick Guthry via his 1st wife Malinda Badley. He has 2 mutations compared to Group Mode DNA. CDYi = 37 instead of 36. This variance is a fast moving marker shared by Kit 20261 – GFG5 – Branch G. He also shares the mutation at DYS413a=21 (instead of 23) with Kit 129125, above, indicating that this could be a pattern marker that indicates inherited genetic changes.
Kit 898982 provides some Autosomal DNA evidence suggesting the Guthrie families of Thickety Creek, SC may be associated with GFG5.
