SARAH ELLEN GUTHRIE
1843SCT – 1921CAN

Sarah Ellen Guthrie was born on 13 May 1843. Census and death records list her birth location as Scotland. No OPR record found. Unlike the majority of the family, William and Gennie’s eldest daughter remained in Canada. She married farmer James Drannan on 18 January 1867. They lived in Ashfield, Huron, Ontario. Although James’ obit does not indicate a previous marriage, several of the children were born prior to 1867 indicating that James, Jane, & John could be her stepchildren rather than biological children. There are several instances of 2nd marriage ceremonies among this group, possibly related to a change of church affiliation, so that may be the case here. The question of the three children being Ellen’s could be solved through Autosomal DNA testing by their descendants.

WILLIAM H GUTHRIE
1845SCT – 1880-5IA

Multiple documents with birth location listed as Scotland, but no OPR record found. According to family lore, William left home when his widowed father brought home a new wife, Catherine McRae. The time frame on the marriage of William Guthrie Sr to Mrs Catherine McRae is a little fuzzy, but it appears that son William Guthrie had already left the home in Ontario by the Spring of 1864, travelled to Illinois where relatives were already settled in Mercer County, and joined the Army.

William Guthrie was a 20 year old miner standing at 5’4″, when he joined the 140th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Assigned to Company F as a private, his service entry date was on 12 May 1864 at Viola, Mercer, Illinois. William was mustered in at Camp Butler, Illinois on 18 June 1864, served for 100 days, and was mustered out in Chicago, Illinois on 29 October 1864.

He married on the 4th of July in 1854 to Caroline ‘Carrie’ Hathaway. Sometime over the next 5 years they settled in Bloomfield and later DesMoines, Iowa where William worked as a Coal Miner. William died sometime between 1880-1885, probably in DesMoines, Polk, Iowa. His widow Caroline remarried to John Reed there on 15 Feb 1886.

THOMAS GUTHRIE
1846CAN – 1924IA

Part of the family lore includes the story of Jennie (Totten) Guthrie bringing the children from Scotland during a rough passage. One of the children reportedly died on the voyage, and we are told that it was son Thomas, which would mean that he died about 1851. However, there appears to be evidence that Thomas lived to be 78 years of age, twice married, and a father to a large family. Note that older brother William H Guthrie married a Hathaway and settled in DesMoine, Polk, Iowa. Thomas Guthrie did so, too. Thomas is also listed on the 1861 Canadian census with the rest of the family.

A coal miner, Thomas Guthrie married Sarah Jane Hathaway on 10 August 1876 in DesMoines, Iowa. Sarah is listed in online trees as the daughter of Isaac Hathaway 1801NY-1868IA & Christina Bender. Their eldest daughter is…you guessed it…the Caroline Hathaway who married William Guthrie.

Thomas & Sarah Jane (Hathaway) Guthrie were parents to 2: John and Della. The mother died sometime between 1880-1884. Thomas then remarried to Eveline Rice on 19 March 1884. Their marriage record actually lists the names of Thomas’ parents: William Guthrie and Jean Loten (Transcribed incorrectly from Toten).

If a child of William & Gennie (Totten) Guthrie died at sea, it does not appear to have been Thomas.

Children:8
Guthrie Sons: John (1877), William (1886), James (1893)
Guthrie Daughters: Della (1879), Martha J (1884), Rosetta (1890), Mary (1894), Hannah V (1897)

MARTHA GUTHRIE
1847SCT – 1924IL

Another child documented as being born in Scotland without an OPR record. Martha was born 24 Feb 1847 reportedly in Scotland. She was still very young when her father retired from the iron moulding business and moved the family to Canada. They are not in the 1851 Census of Scotland or Canada. The 1861 census shows Martha living with her parents in Ashfield, Huron, Canada West (Ontario). She married Walter Hunter on 20 Nov 1863 not long after her family had moved there. They had a large family of 9 children and continued to live in Illinois until the early to mid 1880s when they moved to Iowa. Walter died in 1892. Martha remarried to William Moore about 1895. they lived in Mercer, IL. She was widowed again in 1900 after which she moved to Fulton, IL to live with her daughter Martha’s family.

Children: 9
Hunter Sons: Robert (1866), John (1870), Thomas (1873), Walter (1875), William Guthrie (1877), Dougal (1886)

ANDREW ROBERT GUTHRIE
1856CAN – 1932IA

Andrew is the first member of the family to be born in Canada. The date was 10 December 1856. His name is listed as Andrew R Guthrie on his marriage and cemetery record and as Andrew Robert Guthrie on an index of Iowa Births and Christenings. He was a coal miner, a common occupation within the family. He married Elizabeth Jane Golden, the daughter of Jacob & Sarah (Wirden) Golden on 19 Feb 1881 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa, which remained their home through the State Census of 1925. By 1930 they were living in Poweshiek County, Iowa. Andrew died there 2 years later of pancreatic cancer on 9 Nov 1932. Elizabeth died later that month on 30 November 1932 of cardiac hypertrophy secondary to pneumonia. They are buried at Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma, Poweshiek, Iowa.

ISABELLA HOLIDAY GUTHRIE
1859CAN – 1911IL

Gennie (Totten) Guthrie’s youngest child was born at Ashfield, Canada on 13 July 1859. The mother died within a year of her birth. Isabella married first at 16 years of age to John Reed Cunningham. He was a young coal miner of about 20 at the time. Online record transcriptions and trees are a little confusing about the family structure. The 1900 census is seems to be part of the problem. The Cunningham marriage occurred in 1876. The 1880 census lists John & Isabella Cunningham with 2 children: Luella and Martha. John died in 1886. Isabella married George Dallas Eakman in 1898. There is no 1890 census.

The 1900 census indicates that both Isabella and Dallas are on their 2nd marriage. Isabella has had either 3 children/3 living or 5 children/5 living (the image is overwritten) by 1900. Martha Davis (daughter of John & Isabella (Guthrie) Cunningham) is listed as a daughter with 1 child, who is the Eva listed as a granddaughter on the census. The original census taker did not document the surname for William J, Robert, or Edna, which makes it appear that their surname is also Davis, when it should be Cunningham. Martha, William J, and Robert are also not listed as step-children to the head of household Dallas Eakman. Edna’s birth year is listed here as 1890, which is 4 years after John Cunningham’s death, and after Isabella’s marriage to Dallas Eakman. However, the 1910 census lists her both as Edna Cunningham and as a stepdaughter. Her age is given as 19 (born in 1891), which is what is found in other documents. Edna’s 1922 marriage record lists her surname as Cunningham. Either her DOB is off and she is actually a posthumous child of John Cunningham, or there are other inconsistencies about her identity. By 1910, Belle had been married to Dallas for 12 years and had given birth to 6 children only 5 of whom were living. Belle died in 1911. Dallas moved in with his widowed sister, Martha. He died in 1937 in Mercer County, IL.

CATHERINE ‘KITTY’ MCRAE
1857CAN – 1944CAN

Kitty is the step-daughter of William Guthrie. There may also be no biological relationship between Kitty and Mrs Catherine McRae, who became William Guthrie’s second wife. She may be Catherine’s step-daughter. The 1900 census reveals that William’s wife has given birth to only 2 children, both of whom are living. These numbers are normally inclusive of children born during previous marriages. If so, that means all of the McRae children were actually step-children rather than natural children. Perhaps there are some descendants out there who will share the story.

Kitty was born in July of 1857 at Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Her widowed mother/stepmother had remarried to William Guthrie around 1868-1870 and they relocated everyone to Mercer County, Illinois. Kitty married Jacob Henry Howard in Mercer, IL on 1 March 1875. They had 3 children. Like others associated with this Guthrie family, they settled in Iowa. Henry was a miner. Kitty and Henry had a 2nd marriage ceremony on 26 Dec 1900 in Mahaska, Iowa. This marriage record lists Kitty’s mother as “Maggie McRea”, which would seem to confirm the theory that Catherine was her stepmother. The father’s name is not listed. The witness to this second ceremony was C. Guthrie, presumably Catherine, and the minister J.D. Guthrie, evangelist. Henry died in 1928. Afterward, Kitty moved to Montana and later Wyoming where she lived with her children and their families. She died on 10 July 1945 in Platte, Wyoming. She was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Montana.

ANNA MARY MCRAE
1659CAN – 1914IL

Anna is the step-daughter of William Guthrie. She also appears to be the step-daughter to Mrs Catherine McRae who married William bet. 1868-1870. Born on 13 May 1859, she was a young girl when the family moved to Mercer County, Illinois, She married Johannes ‘John’ Volk, a native of Wurtenberg, Germany, on 10 March 1879. He was a farmer. They continued to live in Mercer County and raised a large family. Anna died in 1914 and John in 1925. They are buried at Viola Cemetery.

JOHN MCRAE GUTHRIE
1862CAN – 1943IA

Several of the McRae children assumed the Guthrie surname on a permanent basis. John is the stepson of William Guthrie, and apparently also the stepson of Mrs Catherine McRae whose maiden name remains unknown to me. John was still under 10 years of age when Catherine remarried to William Guthrie and they moved the family to Mercer County, Illinois. At 18, he was still living at home and working as a farm laborer. Sometime between then and 1887, he married Mary Kirkpatrick (no marriage record found) with whom he had 2 children. She died before the 1900 census in which John is listed as a widower. He was working as a coal miner and still living in Mercer County, IL. He moved to Iowa by 1915. On 16 Oct 1925 he remarried when he was 65 to Amy Phillips. The marriage record lists his parents as William Guthrie and Catherine McRae. John died on 17 Jan 1943 in Knoxville, Marion, Iowa and is buried there at Graceland Cemetery.

EDWARD MCRAE GUTHRIE
1864IL – 1909IL

Edward Guthrie assumed the surname of his stepfather, William Guthrie. He was very young when brought to the United States and grew up on the family farm in Mercer County, Illinois. The 1880 census shows him working as a farm laborer while also attending school. On 22 March, he married Janet Banks, a native of Scotland. They lived in Mercer County where Edward worked as a coal miner. He died on 20 Sep 1909 in Viola. His probate records are listed under the name Edward Guthrie: Family Search, Estate Files 1904-1911 Vol 3046, No 3025-3046, Edward Guthrie, no 3028, images 120-166. Janet lived until 1950.

Edward Guthrie, who has been suffering for several years from injuries received in the mines, died Sunday morning at one o’clock, and was buried in the Viola cemetery Tuesday afternoon, funeral under the auspices of I. O. O. F. No. 848. Rev. Harnes delivered the sermon at the M. E. church.

PHILLIP S. MCRAE GUTHRIE
1868IL – a1879IL

Phillp was the youngest of the McRae children. He was only 2 years old in 1870. The census lists his birth location as Illinois, and it does the same for Edward and Duncan. He is believed to have died sometime before 1879 in Illinois. I can find no record.

SARAH GUTHRIE
1870IL – 1919IL

The 1900 census indicates that Catherine gave birth to 2 children. Presumably, that would be Sarah Guthrie (1870) and Farquhar ‘Frank’ (1872). Sarah Guthrie was born on 3 July 1870 in or near Viola, Mercer, Illinois, USA. She married Jacob Whisenand in Mahaska, Iowa on 29 January 1894. Their 6 children were born in Iowa, but about 6 years after the youngest they moved to Farmington, Fulton, Illinois. Sarah was only 48 at her death on 23 May 1919 having both caner and tuberculosis. She is buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Farmington. Jake died in 1934 in Colorado, but is buried at Elkhart Cemetery in Morton County, Kansas.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Let me preface this section with a request for more details on this family.
This story needs a little straightening out.

1816: BIRTH of WILLIAM GUTHRIE

Almost every document listing William Guthrie’s birthplace identifies it as Scotland. Same goes for his brothers, yet the Old Parish Records in Scotland’s archival database are devoid of any indication that they were born or baptized there. The 1841 census of Scotland actually lists his birthplace as Ireland suggesting that he moved to Scotland at a young age, or at least moved there prior to marriage. The only other solid clue is William Guthrie’s obituary, which identifies his birth location in ‘Ballymena County, Ireland’. Take that to mean Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland. It also provides an exact birthdate of 30 October 1816 rather than the census estimates. Note that the record does not identify his parents, nor specify a middle initial or name, which is found in various places as “O” or “Oldone” without substantiation.

The Times Record
13 Jan 1898 – Aledo, Illinois

1822: BIRTH of JEAN ‘GENNIE’ TOTTEN
Somewhere in Scotland about 1822

The Statutory Registers of Scotland (p1855) are full of men and women of the Totten surname. There are fewer than 20 marriages under that name in the early OPR. The closest potential parents as listed by DOM is John Totten and Sarah Jenkinson who married in Barony on 4 May 1806. There are only 5 OPR birth/baptismal records with similar names, but none appear to be Gennie Totten.

1829: BIRTH of CATHERINE (MNU) MCRAE
1829 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland (or January 1832)

Catherine’s obituary indicates that she was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1829. There are 37 infants born in Aberdeen in 1829 names with some variation of Catherine. Census records indicate January 1832. If the birth month is correct there are only 2 infants recorded for January:
1) Catherine Webster, daughter of John Webster and Helen Argo in Tarves on 18 Jan 1829.
2) Catherine McLean, daughter of Murdoch McLean and Caroline McKay in Aberdeen (Cit) on 31 Jan 1829.

Notes: No relationships are listed. Andrew married Susanna Thompson in 1840. William did not marry Gennie Totten until 1842. Martha Tipping/Thompson is living near or with Andrew and Susanna after their move to Canada during the 1851 and 1861 censuses. The name ‘Martha Brewster’ is used for one of Andrew and Susanna’s daughters. Martha Brewster is old enough to be the mother of the 4 brothers, but she could easily be another relation. In 1841, brothers Samuel Guthrie and Edward Guthrie would be 11 and 9 years of age respectively. Where are they? Not found in the census records for Scotland.

1842: MARRIAGE of WILLIAM GUTHRIE & JEAN TOTTEN
High Church, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland on 17 April 1842

Old Parish Registers – Marriages

1843: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – SARAH ELLEN GUTHRIE
Scotland (reportedly) on 13 May 1843
Ellen, who is sometimes documented as Helen, is the eldest child of William Guthrie & Gennie Totten. No OPR record has been found for Sarah Ellen Guthrie’s birth. The 1871 Census of Canada lists her birthplace as Scotland. Also found in the Canadian censuses for 1881, 1891, 1901, and 1911, and her death record.

1845: BIRTH of SON – WILLIAM H GUTHRIE
Scotland (reportedly) about 1845
The eldest son of William Guthrie and Gennie Totten, William H Guthrie had light hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. The middle initial ‘H’ is found on his marriage record.

1846: BIRTH of SON – THOMAS GUTHRIE
Scotland (presumably), but listed in Canada on 11 May 1846
Based on family lore, son Thomas Guthrie was born in Scotland and made the voyage across the Atlantic to Canada. He reportedly died during the voyage, yet there is a Thomas Guthrie born 11 May 1846 whose parents are listed as William Guthrie and Jean Toten on his marriage record. It seems Thomas did not die as was originally believed. However, all of the records for this Thomas Guthrie list his birthplace as Canada. Since he arrived there when very young, perhaps he simply claimed that nationality on all of the American records that followed his eventual move to Iowa.

1847: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARTHA GUTHRIE
Scotland (reportedly) on 24 February 1847
Martha was the 4th child and 2nd daughter of William Guthrie & Gennie Totten. No OPR found.

1849: CANADIAN IMMIGRATION of BROTHER – ANDREW GUTHRIE & FAMILY
Andrew & Susannah (Thompson) Guthrie and family arrived in Canada in 1849.

1850: AMERICAN IMMIGRATION of BROTHER – SAMUEL GUTHRIE
Samuel was listed in the 1850 census of Pequannock, Morris, New Jersey where he worked as a laborer in the Sooter household. It appears that Samuel returned to Scotland for his marriage to Catherine Stevenson in 1852.

1851: CANADIAN IMMIGRATION of WILLIAM & GENNIE (TOTTEN) GUTHRIE & FAMILY
William’s family does not appear in the 1851 census of Scotland or Canada. Family lore states that William went first and the family followed in 1853.

1852: MARRIAGE of BROTHER – SAMUEL GUTHRIE & CATHERINE STEVENSON
Old Kirkpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland
Samuel Guthrie, machinist, and Catherine Stevenson, both residing in Bonhill in this parish. Married at Bonhill 1st June 1852 by the Rev Wm Halley.

Andrew Robert Guthrie is the youngest of Gennie Totten’s sons with William Guthrie. His Iowa Marriage and Death & Cemetery Records list him only as Andrew R Guthrie, but one Iowa Birth & Christening Index for son Henry William Guthrie lists him as Andrus Robert Guthrie.

1859: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ISABELLA HOLIDAY GUTHRIE
Ashfield, Canada West, Canada on 13 July 1859
Belle is the youngest child of Gennie Totten and William Guthrie. The middle initial ‘H’ and name Holiday is found for her in various trees, but I have not seen it on a document. Any sources?

Abt. 1861/2: AMERICAN IMMIGRATION – WILLIAM GUTHRIE & FAMILY
Mercer County, Illinois, USA
After the death of his wife, William Guthrie decided to move his family to Illinois where other relatives had settled.

1863: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – MARTHA GUTHRIE & WALTER HUNTER
Mercer County, Illinois, USA on 20 November 1863
This is the first of two marriages for Martha Guthrie. She was married to Walter Hunter for 29 years before his death in 1892.

1864: EMIGRATED to MERCER COUNTY, ILLINOIS
Andrew & Susanna (Thompson) Guthrie and family also moved to Mercer County, Illinois.

1864: SON WILLIAM H GUTHRIE ENLISTS in the UNITED STATES ARMY (CIVIL WAR)
Viola, Mercer County, Illinois, USA on 12 May 1864
At the age of 20, William was working as a coal miner, when he joined the 140th Illinois Infantry for a 100 day period of service as a private in Company F. He was mustered in at Viola, IL on 18 Jun 1864 and out at Camp Butler, IL on 29 Oct 1864. His service record lists him as a 20-year old miner born in Scotland standing 5’4″ with light hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion.

One family story about William H Guthrie found in an old forum discussion thread on Genealogy.com tells us that he decided to leave home on Goederich, Huron, Ontario when his father brought home a new wife. Both the timing and the location are a little fuzzy, but this record shows that William H Guthrie was physically in the USA by May of 1864.

1865: MARRIAGE of SON – WILLIAM H GUTHRIE & CAROLINE ‘CARRIE’ HATHAWAY
Mercer County, Illinois, USA on 4 July 1865
William H Guthrie married Caroline Hathaway in Mercer County, Illinois on the 4th of July in 1865 after his 100 day service in the Illinois Infantry was over. Carrie is most likely the daughter of Humphrey & Sarah Hathaway. She was born in Ohio. The family was living in Damascus, Henry, Ohio during the 1860 census and appears to have pause in Illinois for their sons Humphrey remained living in Viola and was listed in the 1870 census. The parents and younger siblings went on to Iowa where they were listed in the 1870 census of Summit, Marion, Iowa.

1865-1870: MARRIAGE (2nd) of WILLIAM GUTHRIE & MRS. CATHERINE MCRAE
Illinois, USA (probably) or Ontario, Canada

This is where my understanding about the family grows fuzzier, so please feel free to jump in to clarify the details. Exactly when and where did this marriage take place? How many of Catherine’s children were actually her biological versus step-children? How many of the biological children were also William Guthrie’s biological children? Sounds like a great mystery for DNA to solve.

Catherine, whose maiden name remains unknown, had married a McRae. His name may have been John Ban (Bain) McRae according to a source at Find-a-Grave, but I have not found that verified anywhere. The Canadian Census for 1861 lists several combinations of John McRae / wife Catherine households, but none that appear to include the two daughters who should be listed at that time, Kitty and Anna.

To further complicate matters, Catherine’s 1900 census info tells us that she has given birth to only 2 children by 1900, which would indicate that only the two youngest, Sarah and Farquhar, are her biological children. This suggests that back in 1861, the father of the McRae children was still married to his first wife, so we shouldn’t be looking for her in that household at all. The McRae children would then include Kitty, Anna, John, Edward, Duncan, and Phillip. Since Catherine is supposedly not their biological mother, she would have married her McRae husband after Phillip’s birth in 1868, and then almost immediately have been widowed. This is when William Guthrie would have swept in to marry her.

The other issue is about the location all of this happened. Catherine was born in Scotland, according to census records. The 1870 census of Illinois lists only the eldest three McRae (then identified as Guthrie) children as being Canadian by birth. The remainder through son Phillip were born in Illinois. This suggests that the McRae family moved to Illinois sometime between 1862-1864. That places them in Illinois by 1865 by which time William Guthrie and his family are already living there. Daughter Martha Guthrie married Walter Hunter in Mercer County, Illinois in 1863, and William Guthrie’s household is listed on the 1865 Illinois State Census with 5 males and 3 females. Although the number of males makes sense for a combined household, assuming William & Catherine married by 1865: William, sons William, Thomas, and Andrew, and stepsons John and Edward, it does not quite add up to the correct number of females. Eldest daughter Sarah Ellen Guthrie appears to have remained in Ontario. She married there in 1867. Daughter Martha was also out of the household as she married William Hunter in 1863. That would potentially leave Catherine, daughter Isabella, and stepdaughters Kitty and Anna living there, 4 females rather than 3.

If the 1865 State Census means that William & Catherine were married by that date, it also means that Duncan and Phillip were probably their biological children. YDNA tests will confirm it, but even Autosomal DNA testing should provide an answer as to whether there are Guthrie cousins from GFG2A.

This is the closest match I can find. They are living in Ashfield, Huron, Canada West.

1861 Census of Canada West, Huron
John Mc Crea farmer born Scotland 60 (1801) listed as both married and a widower
Catherine McCrae born Scotland 32 (1829) married [The correct DOB for William Guthrie’s future wife]
Duncan McCrae born Scotland 29 (1832)
Margaret McCrae born Scotland 16 (1845)
Donald McCrae born Scotland 8 (1853)
Catherine McCrae born W Canada 4 (1857) [The correct DOB for Catherine’s daughter/stepdaughter, Kitty.]
Isabella McCrea born W Canada 3 (1858) [William also has a daughter Isabella born about the same year. Catherine’s child/stepchild of this age is Anna Mary.]

Note: It looks like this 1861 census John McCrea is supposed to be the John Ban McRea mentioned in the Find-a-Grave memorial as Catherine’s husband. The only catch is that he is supposedly the same man still living in the 1891 census of Ashfield, Huron West, Ontario, aged 93. He is listed as the father of Duncan McRea, the HOH, who is listed (obviously incorrectly) as 15 years of age. The Ancestry website linked here mentions a book, but does not include a title. Note that there are no designated relationships on the census above. Catherine could be a daughter-in-law rather than a younger spouse.

Whatever the path taken, William Guthrie and Catherine McRae were presumably married by 1870 when they appear in the census of Greene, Mercer County, Illinois.

1867: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – SARAH ELLEN GUTHRIE & JAMES DRANNAN/DRENNAN
Huron, Ontario, Canada on 18 January 1867

Ellen was 18 years of age in 1861 when she was listed with her father and siblings in the 1861 Canadian Census. Ellen is also referenced as Helen in some records. She apparently remained in Canada when her father decided to move to Illinois. Her marriage to James Drannan (or Drennan) took place in Huron, Ontario, Canada on 18 January 1867. James was born in Dumfries, Scotland on 16 January 1828, the son of John Drennan and his wife Janet Rae. Three of James’ children – James (1862), Jane (1864), and John (1866) – were born prior to his documented marriage to Ellen. I cannot find another marriage record for James Drannan, and all of the references to these children’s mother lists Ellen / Helen Guthrie. Ellen was already an adult at the time. An existing relationship developing in 1861 would also explain why she did not go to Illinois. I have also noted that several members of this family have had 2nd marriage ceremonies, which may have occurred when joining another church. That could potentially be the case this couple. Autosomal DNA testing for descendants of James, Jane, & John should indicate whether they also have Guthrie ancestry.

1876: MARRIAGE of SON – THOMAS GUTHRIE & SARAH JANE HATHAWAY
Des Moines, Polk, Iowa, USA on 10 August 1876
Sarah Jane Hathaway is another daughter of Humphrey & Sarah Hathaway. Sarah Jane was younger than her sister Caroline, who married William H Guthrie, by about 10 years. She was 19 at her marriage to Thomas. Since there is a question of whether or not Thomas, the son of William & Gennie, survived the trip from Scotland to Canada, the fact that Thomas also married into the same Hathaway family should be seen as more evidence. Both William and Thomas moved with their wives to Des Moines, Iowa. The Hathaway parents had also moved to Iowa.

Note: The Champion family listed directly above the Guthrie entries includes a Black head of household, and a Mulatto wife and son. It may be that the census taker continued listing the next household the same way indicating an original error, or there could be some truth to the rumor of Thomas’ death on that sea voyage and there would be an interesting story to discover, especially since William Guthrie came to Canada prior to the rest of the family. This is most likely a documentation error. The remainder of Thomas’ records list his race as white.

1924: DEATH of SON – THOMAS GUTHRIE
Angus, Boone County, Iowa, USA on 13 November 1924
Rippey Cemetery, Block 6, Lot 27

THOS. GUTHRIE DEAD
Thomas Guthrie one of the oldest residents of the Angus neighborhood and one of the best known men in that community died Thursday at his home in Angus, following a long illness. Death was due to a general breakdown and was hastened by an attack of dropsy.

Mr. Guthrie was about 77 years of age and had lived for nearly half that long in the community. For many years he was employed at Angus as a coal miner, a vocation which he followed almost to the time his health commenced to fail. He was known to all of the older residents of the community and respected by all who knew him.

One son and two daughters survive him. They are: William Guthrie, who lives at Harvey, Iowa; Mrs. Martha Speburg, of Ft. Dodge and Mrs. Rose Meadows of Ogden.

Funeral services were held Sunday and burial took place in the Rippey Cemetery.
