MARTHA GUTHRIE
1754PA – 1834PA
Robert Guthrie did indeed have a daughter named Martha Guthrie, but whether she is also Agnes Gordan’s child is uncertain. Martha is named in Robert’s will dated Sep 1801. “I leave to Martha my beloved daughter one dollar.” She made her mark on the estate receipt verifying receipt of her $1 legacy from her father. Her husband John Lindsey had died in 1806. Otherwise he as her legal representative would have signed the receipt as was the case with her sisters.

John Lindsey’s 1806 will was witnessed by brother-in-law James Guthrie and Thomas McCall, the husband of his wife’s sister, Isabel (Guthrie) McCall. Martha lived until 19 Nov 1834. Her gravestone lists her as being 80 years of age making her DOB about 1754. If that age is correct rather than an overestimation, her father Robert would only have been 17 at the time, and Agnes Gordon would have only been about 13 at the time. (Agnes’ DOB is given as 1741. Her parents married in 1742.) The 1810 census lists the widowed Martha Lindsey as a HOH in the 45 and over category (born before 1766). The 1800 census of the same location lists the John Lindsey household with 1M and 1F 45 and over (born before 1756), so the 1754 DOB may be accurate.

JAMES GUTHRIE
20 Dec 1760PA – 1848OH
James Guthrie was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania on 20 December 1760. During the 1780s, James moved to Cecil Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Sarah Dunlap in Sep 1789 (date unverified). They had at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. Chartiers Township was formed in 1790 and the family lived there until 1830 when they emigrated with James’ youngest brother Joseph & family, along the National Road to Ohio. James purchased a 1/4 section (160 acre) property on the Muskingum County side of Taylor Road, and Joseph purchased his 1/4 section (160 acre) property adjacent to his brother’s, but on the Guersey County side of the road. James died on 3 Aug 1848. Sarah died on 18 Jan 1844. They are both buried in Bloomfield Cemetery in Highland, Muskingum, Ohio.

MARY ‘POLLEY’ GUTHRIE
c1762PA – After 1841
Known as ‘Polley’, Mary Guthrie was born sometime between 1761-1770 according to the 1840 census range. The Find-a-Grave site lists her DOB as 1762, but there is no DOB or DOD on the gravestone itself. Her father Robert Guthrie’s will does not appear to name his children by birth order. Polley married Thomas Dodds. According to his tombstone, Thomas was “born on the ocean”, presumably when his family immigrated to America. He was a Revolutionary War Soldier. They lived in Renfrew, Butler, Pennsylvania, and are buried at White Oak Springs Presbyterian Cementery.

ELIZABETH GUTHRIE
1760-75PA – After 1801
The second daughter named in her father Robert Guthrie’s will of September 1801. Like most of her siblings, he left Elizabeth one dollar, presumably because any inheritance had already been provided. Since there are no other females besides Robert’s wife living in the Guthrie household in 1790, it is presumed that Elizabeth married and was living outside the family home. She may be one of the unnamed daughters who married into the McCage family mentioned in Russell Family and Connections. The 1809 estate document noting cash payouts to family members did not include a payout to daughter Elizabeth or her representative.
Mistaken Identity: People are incorrectly attaching this Elizabeth Guthrie to James Tomb. Wrong family. That woman was the daughter of William Guthrie, who was one of the colonist who came over from Ireland with Dr Clark and remained at Stillwater, NY.

ISABEL GUTHRIE
1766-74PA – 1820-30OH
If the Guthrie daughters are named in their father’s will in order of birth, Isabel Guthrie would be the youngest. We know that she married Thomas McCall prior to the distribution of her father’s estate as there is a receipt signed by Thomas verifying that he was in possession of the $1 due to his wife.

Isabel and Thomas McCall had 5 sons and 2 daughters. The family moved to Muskingum County, Ohio where Thomas died on 24 March 1842, but his wife Isobel’s fate is unclear. Their last child was born in 1806. Census records suggest that Isabel was alive in 1810 and 1820 during the census, but there is no female in Thomas McCall’s household of the appropriate age range in 1830 or 1840 to be Isabel. She most likely died between 1820-1830 in Muskingum County, OH.

WILLIAM GUTHRIE
1766-84PA – Aft. 1810
Online trees list William’s DOB as 1761, but that does not correspond to the 1810 census data that indicates he was 26-44 years of age at the time. William owned property in Chartiers. He was a schoolmaster. The 1800 Chartiers assessment roll indicates that there were 4 log school houses in the township and contains the names of William Guthrie, Samuel and Isaac Miller, George Munroe, William Tate and George Welsh, schoolmasters. In 1802, William sold a 100-acre tract of land to his brother Joseph Guthrie of Chartiers for 350 pounds lawful money. He served as the executor to his father’s estate. “I leave to my son William the land I now live upon only with reserve that when he alters his way of living.” That is a very intriguing statement. What was William doing? He apparently married at some point. The 1810 census lists him in a household of: 1M 26-44, 1F 45+, 1F 16-25, 2F<10. No further details known.

ROBERT GUTHRIE
1767PA – 28 Dec 1847PA
The records of Carlisle list him as Robert Guthrie Jr. If he is the man we think he is then his birth year would be 1767 as proven by tombstone records. However, the 1800 census of Chartiers lists Robert Guthrie’s Household with 1M & 1F 16-25 (1775-1784). Was Robert placed in the wrong age category, or can we find some other evidence that will reveal his DOB?
In 1797, Robert Jr purchased land from his parents for 60 pounds and was taxed for the property the following year. He married sometime before the 1800 census to a woman named Margaret. That woman is believed to be Margaret Wilson. In 1809, Robert Guthrie and Margaret his wife sold their portion of the family farm for $480. A witness to the sale was Thomas Wilson. This couple then disappeared from the Cumberland County, PA records.
The Robert Guthrie known to be associated with this genetic line of descendants is found in Somerset Twp. and West Bethlehem Twp., Washington County, PA. He appears in those locales at about the same time Robert and Agnes (Gordon) Guthrie’s son leaves Cumberland County. The 1828 will of Thomas Wilson of Somerset, Washington, PA gives us another clue. It mentions unnamed children of Robert Guthrie by his daughter Margaret, who was presumably deceased by the time he wrote the will. It also indicates that Thomas Wilson’s daughter Jane’s husband was Joseph Guthrie. This refers to Joseph Guthrie, the youngest son of Robert and Agnes. It makes a lot of sense that a pair of sisters might marry two brothers.
The only complication with the decision to pair Margaret Wilson with this Robert Guthrie is the fact that Adam Guthrie and Mercy Irwin of Chester County, PA also had a son named Robert of approximately the same age who also married a woman named Margaret and was living in Washington County, PA at the time of Adam’s death. Both lineages belong to GFG2A and possess the same YDNA profile.
Robert Guthrie Jr’s wife Margaret died about 1811. Her resting place is unknown. He remarried to Ruth Roberts by 1812. There were 6 children by Margaret and another 6 by Ruth. Robert died on 28 Dec 1847 and Ruth just under a year later on 26 Sep 1848. They are buried at Pigeon Creek Baptist Cemetery in Washington County, PA.

JEAN GUTHRIE
1771-76PA – 1726-30PA
Jean Guthrie is named in her father Robert Guthrie’s will of September 1801. She is the first child listed. Since we don’t know the marriage date for her parents, it is possible that Jean was born before her brother James in 1760. Her father’s only bequest to Jean and most of her siblings was one dollar, which usually indicates that any inheritance has already been provided rather than a form of disinheritance. There were no females other than Robert’s spouse living in the household during the 1790 census, so it is likely that Jean Guthrie was already married and living elsewhere. The following receipt from William Guthrie to James McClelland reveals that Jean Guthrie was his wife.

The Find-a-Grave site lists “Jane Guthrie McClelland” with a DOD of 15 Feb 1824. The stone (no photo) reading as “Wife of James” and a note stating the death year is also shown as 1821. Another that she was 75 at her death, which means she was born about 1749. The corresponding info for James McClelland lists him with a DOD of 1 May 1829 at 81 years. Burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Hickory, Washington, PA. The narrative found for this family suggests that there is another closely related couple with similar names, possibly simply one generation removed from this one.
One source found actually makes quite a mess of things by apparently merging names of Guthrie children from two different generations. Biographical Sketch of the Russell Family and Connections by Alexander Russell, 1887 mentions the marriage of Ann McClelland and Andrew Russell, Jr and makes a poor attempt at a sketch of the Guthrie family. It identifies Ann as being the daughter of “James and Jane McClelland” born in 1781 and naming Ann’s siblings as: Nancy, Patty, Robert, William, and James. Next it indicates that Jane Guthrie McClelland had five sons and seven daughters despite just listing Ann as one of only 6 siblings. The author may have intended to list that Jane Guthrie McClelland was one of 12 siblings (Joseph, Robert, William, John, and James, Jane, Isabel (who married Thomas McCall), Martha (who married John Lindsey), and two girls who married members of the McCage family. However, that does not even add up to 12. That adds up to 10, only 8 of whom are identified by name.
Based on a current review of this data I am going to attach JANE Guthrie 1749-1824 and James McClelland 1748-1829 to the family of Robert Guthrie and Bridget Dougherty. They had a documented daughter named Jane who was born in 1741 and died in Ireland in 1744. Bridget and her son James sailed to America in 1745 to meet up with husband Robert and son Robert who had gone the year before. That would mean that JANE Guthrie, born about 1749, would have been born in Pennsylvania. She also would have had to be born in the last few months of the year as Bridget gave birth to son John in January of 1749. Naming an infant after a recently deceased child was not unusual.
Going back to JEAN Guthrie, the daughter of Robert Guthrie and Agnes Gordon. We know she existed because she is named in Robert’s will as JEAN. We also know that her husband was named James McClelland because it is found in Robert’s estate papers on the above receipt.
Since the James McClelland married to JANE Guthrie died in 1829, he would not be enumerated in the 1830 census where we would presumably find the James McClelland married to JEAN Guthrie. There are 3 households headed by men named James McClelland in 1830 Washington County, Pennsylvania. One is in Mount Pleasant, likely to be the son of James and JANE, where both the HOH and spouse are aged 30-39 (born 1791-1800). Another is in Hopewell with a HOH aged 50-59 (born 1771-1780) with no obvious spouse of the same age. The last is in Canonsburg aged 40-49 (1781-1790) with a spouse of 30-39 (1791-1800). The most likely candidate household is the one in Hopewell, which suggests that JEAN may have died between 1826-1830. The Hopewell household in 1820 listed both HOH and inferred spouse as 45 and over (born before 1776). A narrowed estimation using both 1820 and James’ age range from 1830, would estimate JEAN’s DOB between 1771-1776.

JOSEPH GUTHRIE
1776PA – 1855OH
Joseph Guthrie was the youngest of Robert & Agnes’ children. He married twice. First to Jane Wilson, daughter of Thomas & Hannah Wilson. They had 10 children: 3 sons and 7 daughters. Joseph & Jane married about 1801 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Joseph purchased a 100 acres property on the North Fork of Chartiers Creek from his brother William Guthrie in 1802. Joseph’s family was enumerated in Mount Pleasant Township in 1810 and 1820. They sold their coal rights in a 2+ acre area to Joseph M.Clusky/McClusky on 3 Aug 1826, and then on 24 Feb 1827 sold him their North Chartiers Creek property. Joseph and his family, along with his older brother James’ family, moved to Ohio by 1830. Joseph purchased 1/4 section (160 acre) on the Guernsey County side of the County Line, while James purchased 1/4 section (160 acres) on the Muskingum County side, both properties being adjacent along Taylor Road. Joseph’s wife Jane died sometime between 1831-1840, and Joseph remarried to a woman named Mary “Polly”. No issue from this second marriage. Joseph died between 1751-1760.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
1737: BIRTH of ROBERT GUTHRIE, JUNIOR
Some online trees list Robert with a middle name: Wayne. Most likely a copy error. No source information found. His birth date was published in the Dunn book, ‘Records of the Guthrie Family’ as communicated to by George Wilkins Guthrie, former Mayor of Pittsburgh, in a letter to a cousin, Mrs Lyster dated 29 June 1893: “Their first son, Robert, was born in 1737.” The family was living in Ireland. Robert Guthrie Sr had been born in the City of Derry, aka Londonderry, Ireland, and Bridget Dougherty was from neighboring Donegal, Ireland. The exact county of Robert Guthrie Jr’s birth remains unknown.
1744: IMMIGRATION from IRELAND to AMERICA
The family made a 2-stage arrival in America. Robert Guthrie, Sr, and son Robert Jr arrived first, sailing over in 1744. The following year Bridget, and son James, arrived. It is unknown why the family did not travel together. One can speculate that it had something to do with Robert & Bridget’s daughter Jane being ill. The 3-year old died in 1744.
1744: RESIDENCE in PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA
Guthrie-Lyster Letter of 1893: “They settled and lived three or four years in Philadelphia, and from there removed to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.”
1749: RESIDENCE in LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
Robert Guthrie Jr’s brother, John Guthrie, was born in Lancaster County, PA on 11 Jan 1749, indicating that the family had taken up residency there by that date.
1750: RESIDENCE in CARLISLE, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
Guthrie-Lyster Letter of 1893: “When John was a year old they moved to Carlisle, PA.”
1754: BIRTH of DAUGHTER, MARTHA GUTHRIE
Based on the data listed further above, Martha was born when Robert Guthrie was a young man of about 17. Even if the dates are off by a little, it still suggests that it was before his marriage to Agnes Gordon. That also assumed that Agnes was indeed born about 1741.

1766-1784: BIRTH of SON, WILLIAM GUTHRIE (Range 1766-1784)
William apparently married. The 1810 census lists him in a household of: 1M 26-44, 1F 45+, 1F 16-25, 2F<10. No further details known.
