NOTES:
The youngest child of John and Ann (Hill) Guthrie was born about 1762. She married Alexander Andrews. They lived on the Guthrie homestead. Information on the Andrews Bridge Historic District reveals that John Guthrie (Guthrey) was the early land owner of Guthrey’s Ford. Following John’s death, his daughter Abigail’s husband, Alexander Andrews, acquired his holdings. The area then became known as Andrews Ford. Alexander opened a tavern at the crossroads by the ford by 1805. In 1813, he petitioned the Commissioners of Lancaster County to construct a bridge where the ford previously existed, and in the following year a stone arch bridge was erected spanning 450 feet across Octorara Creek, which connected Chester and Lancaster Counties via the Newport Road, a primary road during the Colonial period. The village changed its name again, to Andrews Bridge. With increased travel, Alexander Andrew’s tavern, known as the Rising Sun, prospered and was later known as the Andrews Bridge Inn. He sold the remains of his estate at Andrews Bridge, including the inn, to William C Worth in 1836. Abigail (Guthrie) Andrews died on 18 Feb 1843 and Alexander Andrews on 15 Jan 1846.
