There is a Giles, VA probate record for Alexander Waddle in Book B, p.538, however the microfilm of the book ends at page 524. This ‘missing’ record is the only thing that might help determine whether Alexander Waddle of Raleigh, VA is indeed this man. Online trees list him as the same person, and as his wife is also named Mary A., there is no other obvious reason to doubt they are the same couple. The census records and children listed below refer to the Waddle family of Raleigh, VA. Autosomal DNA testing is recommended in order to verify a GFG3A ancestral connection.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1776: Provincial Census of Maryland
Elizabeth Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland
Mary Guthrie was listed in the 1776 Provincial Census of Elizabeth Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland as “Mary Gutry” at 16 years of age.

1777: Marriage to Ephraim Skiles Jr
Washington County, Maryland
The following year she married Ephraim Skiles Jr on 17 Dec 1777. A transcription of the Maryland Compiled Marriage Index lists the groom as Ephraim Schyler. The minister was Rev. George Young.

Mary’s father, Robert and uncle John Guthrey, had been witnesses to the will of Elizabeth Shiles, written 29 June 1769, proved 16 Aug 1769, Liber A #1, pp340-341. According to the relationships found in trees this woman is supposed to be the widow of John Skiles, and mother of Ephraim Skiles Sr. So, the Guthrie and Skiles families were already well acquainted by the time Mary reached marriageable age.

1778: Birth of Son – Joseph Skiles
Mary and Ephraim’s three children were born between 1778 and 1782. Joseph was the eldest.

1789: Father’s Death
Rockbridge County, Virginia
Robert Guthrie died in 1789 bequeathing his daughter Mary 1/12 portion of his estate.

1796: Husband’s Death
Montgomery County, Virginia
Since society generally expects a widow to be in mourning for six months to a year after the death of her husband, it is likely that Ephraim Skiles actually died before 1796.

On 1 Sept, 1796 Mary Skyles, widow, married John Scott in Montgomery County. Edward Morgan, a Methodist minister, performed the ceremony. They had three children.

1797: Guardianship of Skiles Daughters
Montgomery County, Virginia
Upon remarrying, a widow’s children from the previous marriage sometimes remained with their mother, and sometimes were raised by relatives. In either case, legal guardianships were created for minor children in order to oversee their financial interests in regards to their inheritance until they reached their maturity.

On 1 Aug 1797, the Montgomery County, VA court named Richard Guthrie guardian of minor children of Ephraim Skyles, decd, namely, Phebe and Elizabeth. Daniel Howe was security for the guardianship. (Order Book 10, p.86, FHL Film # 008151731 – Image 558 of 653) (See Also – Annals of Southwest Virginia)

By this date their father had already been dead and their mother remarried to John Scott for nearly a year.

1809: Husband’s Death
Montgomery County, Virginia
Scott’s will, proved in 1809, named wife Mary and her brother Richard Guthrie as executors. Bequests to his son John and daughters Mary Ann and Jane. The will was witnessed by Joseph Skiles and Frederick Carper. (Book 1, page 381 – FHL Film 007645478 – Image 214 of 805). (Excerpt).
