Jesse Guthrie was born about 1765 in Hanover County, Virginia. He moved with the family to Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky about 1789. He was noted to be a Methodist (1794). In 1796, the Kentucky Gazette published, “Jesse Guthrie and Benjamin Batterton want to buy old copper, brass and pewter, and they have a brass founder who will cast still cocks, and rivets, mill inks, spoon molds and mountains.” Batterton was his brother-in-law.

“West and Guthrie” was one of the early mercantile businesses in Lexington. Jesse Guthrie was business partner to Edward West, who was a silversmith, clockmaker, and gunsmith. They were mentioned in the writings of Henry Clay as defendants in a lawsuit brought by a Philadelphia company. Clay was given Power of Attorney by Peacock Wrenshall and Company. See also: Morrison v. Clay.

Jesse Guthrie became one of Kentucky’s early school teachers. He was the author of ‘The American Schoolmaster’s Assistant’, also known as ‘Guthrie’s Arithmetic’, which was published in Lexington, KY in 1804. About 1798, he married a woman named Priscilla (MNU). He was listed in the Harrison County, Kentucky censuses of 1810 and 1820. According to those records, Jesse & Priscilla were parents to 7 children. His death reportedly occurred in Harrison County, date unknown. Priscilla outlived him and died sometime after the 1830 census.

The Jesse Guthary Household in Harrison, Kentucky (1810 Census):
1M and 1F 26-44, 1M and 1F 10-15, 2M and 2F under 10. Total Household Members: 8

The 1820 Census lists the Jesse Guthrie household in Maysville, Harrison County, Kentucky:
1M and 1F 45 and over, 1M and 1F 16-25 (the male being 16-18), 1M and 2F 10-15, 1F under 10 with 3 persons engaged in agriculture.

The family moved to Posey County, Indiana within the next couple of years. The FHL Indiana files are all in a locked status online. Jesse died there in 1823.

The 1830 census of Robb, Posey, Indiana lists the Priscilla Guthrie household:
1F 50-59, 1M 20-29, 1F 15-19, 1F 10-14.

There are 2 Posey County marriages for women named Priscilla Guthrie. The earliest is the marriage of her daughter to Benjamin Montgomery on 11 Mar 1825. The second is dated 28 Nov 1844 to Josiah Defer, but the 1850 census shows that woman being only 22 years of age, so she is apparently not Jesse’s widow.

Spouse: Benjamin Montgomery
(m. 11 March 1825 IN)

Priscilla Guthrie married Benjamin Montgomery in Posey County, Indiana on 11 March 1825. They are not listed in Posey County during the 1830 census, but may be the couple listed in Gibson, Indiana: 1M 30-39 (1790-1800), 1F 20-29 (1801-1810), 1M and 2F under 5 (1826-1830).

In 1840, the Benjamin Montgomery household is presumably the one listed in Robb, Posey, Indiana, but there is no female of Priscilla’s age listed in the household, even though she is clearly at home in 1850 and beyond. 1M 40-49, 1M30-39, 1M15-19, 1M and 1F 10-14, 1M and 1F 5-9, 1M under 5.

By 1850 the family was settled in Menard County, Illinois:

Montgomery 50 born KY; Jesse Montgomery 20 born IA; M J Montgomery 18 born IA; Addison Montgomery 16 born IA; James Montgomery 14 born IA; M Montgomery 12 born IA; W Montgomery 8 born IA. Even though the initials used are “IA”, other census records show specifically that the children were born in Indiana, not Iowa. The census taker was simply abbreviating Indiana in a non-standard way rather than the modern usage, which was not approved until 1963.

“Montgomery House: This little brick house stands at the corner of Fifth and Antle streets, and was built in 1855 by Benjamin Montgomery. Little is known of this family, only that his wife was named Priscilla, and that in 1866 they sold the house to James S. Bryant.” (Plews, 1967)

In 1860, Petersburg, Menard, Illinois the Head of Household is son Addison:

Perilla Montgomery, 70, female, white, keeping house, born Kentucky

Abt. 1801-10KY – Aft. 1840 IN
Marital Status: Unknown

Reuben Guthrie was born about 1801-1810. After his father’s death in 1823 and his eldest brother’s death ten years earlier, Reuben was the oldest surviving son in the household. His mother was listed as the Head of Household during the 1830 census, but Reuben held that responsibility when the 1840 census taker enumerated the family. At that time they were living in Robb, Posey, Indiana and listed with 1M30-39, 1M and 1F 20-29, and 1F60-69.

Reuben Guthrie is not found within the 1850 census for Indiana. No further details.

CHILD 5: PETER GUTHRIE
abt. 1806 KY – 1860 IL

(m.25 Aug 1825 IN)
Spouse 2: Eliza Defur
(m. 22 Dec 1835 IN)
Spouse 3: Jane Bonner Senters
(m.14 Nov 1849 IN)

Born in Kentucky about 1806, Peter Guthrie was the youngest son in the family. He was a farmer, married three times, and a resident of Robb, Posey, Indiana and Lawrence County, Illinois. His first marriage came at the age of about 19 to Polly Bennet on 25 August 1825 in Posey County, Indiana. They had 2 daughters together: Louisa M and Sarah E. Guthrie, and an unidentified son. Polly presumably died 1833-34.

Peter married his second wife, Eliza Defur, on 22 December 1835 in Posey County, Indiana. The 1840 census lists seven children: 1M15-19, 1F10-14, 2F5-9, and 3F under 5. Unknown if Eliza was previously married and brought children into the household, or if this number should be divided between Polly and Eliza.

Peter and Eliza’s marriage ended either in Eliza’s death or in a divorce. No evidence at this time one way or the other. There is another Posey, IN marriage in 1856 between an Eliza E Defur and Charles W Nelson, but it is unknown whether it was the same person. Peter and Eliza had at least three children together, namely Rebecca Jane, John W, and Susan A Guthrie.

A Lawrence County, IL bio on John S Seuters (or Senters) reveals that he was a prosperous farmer whose father had the same name. His mother was Jane Bonner, born in Ohio. John was the second of their 3 children, the others being Sarah Ann and Mary. After his father’s death, when he was just four years old, his mother married Peter Guthrie. “In 1853, the family came to Lawrence County, Ill., and Mr Guthrie bought 230 acres in Lawrence Township. This was timberland, and there was plenty of work for all in clearing it. Mr Guthrie died on his farm in 1860.” Peter and Jane had one son of their own, William Guthrie.

She was 16 years old, while Isaac Smith was about 26. The couple settled in Gibson County, Indiana where Isaac worked as a farmer. Isaac died on 10 October 1858. Sucky lived until 9 October 1875. They are buried at Blythe Chapel Cemetery in Owensville, Gibson, IN. Note that Find-a-Grave erroneously lists her as Susan Martin Smith.

Francis Lock was a merchant born in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. His first wife was Mary Robinson (1807-1847). Elizabeth and Francis were living in Robb, Posey, Indiana during the 1850 census. There were no known children born to this marriage. Elizabeth died on 3 April 1858 and was buried at Mount Erie in Wayne County, Illinois. Francis married again to Eliza Robinson Craw (1837-1881) and had three additional children. Francis died on 27 February 1809 in Mount Erie, Illinois.
