NOTES:
Mary Guthrie, also called Polly, is a probable daughter of John Guthrie of Guthrie Family Group 3A and his unidentified wife. John Guthrie is found in the records of Greenbrier County, Virginia at the same time as Polly’s marriage to James Kitchen, Jr., who may actually have been the third generation of Kitchen men living in the area. The majority of the children were born prior to the Kitchen family’s move to Rush County, Indiana.

James Kitchen disappears from the Greenbrier Tax Records after 1800. His parents, James & Jane (Patterson) Kitchen Sr moved to Russell County, Virginia, where their house reportedly burned down in 1801. James Jr apparently followed them to Russell County as he also appears in the local Personal Property Tax Lists there until 1810, and possibly until 1814. In Jan 1814, James and Mary purchased property in Connorsville, Fayette County, Indiana becoming some of its original settlers. They were enumerated there during the 1820 US Census.

Rush County, Indiana was not officially formed for nearly another decade being taken from Delaware County on 22 April 1822, which itself was still not officially organized until 1827. James purchased Rush County land in 1830, still making the early settlement list for that county. The family was enumerated in Rush County for the 1830 census.

Mary “Polly” (Guthrie) Kitchen died the following year on 17 Aug 1831, cause of death unknown. Their youngest child was still under 10 years of age. James eventually remarried on 16 Jul 1836 to Mary Lane. He died in Rush, IN in 1854 at the age of 84.

CHILD 1: REBECCA KITCHEN
1800 VA – 1858IA
Spouse 1: John M Newhouse Jr
Spouse 2: Robert Curry Jr

Rebecca Kitchen was born on 5 April 1800, most likely in Greenbrier County since that is the last year her father appears on the tax records. Like many eldest daughters, she helped her parents with the younger siblings, and she did not marry until they were settled in Rush County, Indiana. At the age of 29, she married John McCray Newhouse Jr on 31 July 1829. He was 9 years younger. They had two daughters. John died on 18 April 1835 when he was only 26 years of age.

Three years later, on 8 Jan 1838 in Rush, IN, Rebecca married again. Her husband was Robert Curry Jr. They had three sons born between 1839 and 1844. Her husband Robert died about 1844 after which Rebecca remained a wido. The family had moved from Rush, Indiana to Mahaska, Iowa prior to Robert’s death there. Rebecca and her boys are listed together in the 1850 US Census of Mahaska.

Rebecca died in 1858 in Mahaska. She is buried at Beacon Cemetery.

CHILD 2: MARGARET KITCHEN aka “PEGGY”
1800VA – 1885IA
Spouse: John M. Furry

Peggy’s birth date is given as 22 Sep 1800, which indicates a probable error either with her birth year or her sister Rebecca’s. If both are accurate, then Peggy would have been born significantly prematurely at a time when she would not survive such an early delivery. Her memorial stone indicates she was 83 at the time of her death in 1855 making her birth year more likely to be 1802. The location may have been in either Greenbrier or Russell County, Virginia.

The marriage of Margaret Kitchen and John Furry occurred on 28 Sep 1829 in Rush County, Indiana. They moved to Liberty, Washbash, Indiana by the 1840 census and remained there for about 20 years before moving to Vinton, Benton County, Iowa. On 11 March 1882, John Furry died “suddenly, but not unexpectedly” having been “feeble for some time” prior to his death. Peggy lived until 4 July 1885. They are buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Benton County, IA.

He married Malinda Womack on 22 Jan 1829 in Decatur, Indiana. The family moved to Iowa prior to the 1850 census when they are listed in Monroe County, and later in Mahaska County, Iowa. Clark died there on 21 September 1855. He was only 53 years old. Malinda died at 83 years of age on 18 July 1893. They are buried at Baldwin Cemetery in Mahaska. Sometime during the last 20 years of his life, Clark and his sons began using the “Kitching” surname variation, and so it is that spelling carved into their memorial stone.

He remained there until January 1837, when he disposed of his property in Union Township, and purchased 240 acres of uncultivated land in Jackson Township, his object being to secure a larger tract of land.
