Notes:
Sarah W Guthrie was born on 3 August 1813 in Amherst County, Virginia, although the early family census record places her in the 1816-1818 category. Her father died when she was still a minor, and the courts allowed her mother, Elizabeth (Wingfield) Guthrie to be assigned as the legal guardian of her own minor children. When Elizabeth died in 1828, that guardianship was later reassigned to her brother, Nicholas.
Nicholas Guthrie wasn’t the most vigilant of guardians. He lost his pocket book containing the guardian bonds and other documents and advertised for their return. His own brother, Nathan Guthrie, brought a court case against him, but by that time he had left Virginia for Missouri.
Nathan, Sarah, and their widowed sister, Susan Stockton, all left for Missouri within months of the case. They settled first in Lafayette County, Missouri by the time of the 1850 census of District 46. Nathaniel was listed as a farmer.
They removed to Westport, Jackson County, Missouri sometime after that. Nathan died there on 27 April 1858 and is buried in one of the older burial grounds. This left Sarah and Susan as single ladies living on their own for the next three of decades. They were listed as housemates in 1860, 1870, and 1880. Once they were in their 70s, it appears that they moved to Marshall, Saline, Missouri, where their youngest brother, Rev. Oliver Guthrie was living with his family. Sally’s sister Susan was making her bed one day when she dropped dead on 12 Oct 1886. She was about 76 years old.
Sally continued to live with relatives. During the 1900 census of Marshall, Saline, Missouri, she was living in the home of her nieces, Mary (Guthrie) Burnham and Ida M Guthrie. She was 93 years old at her death on 16 Sep 1906.
