ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG6 – BRANCH I

George Guthrie was born in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland. He married Margaret Keys on 8 December 1815 in Pennsylvania. They made their home in Pike Run, Washington County, Pennsylvania and in 1850 were living in Somerset, Pennsylvania. George purchased 400 acres of land in Vermilion County, Illinois when he was in his early 70s and moved there in 1854.

George Guthrie was a confirmed resident of Pike Run, Washington County, PA by 1820. A transcription error at Ancestry lists him as George Gentry. The original lists George Gutry:

Two additional early generations have been given in online Family Trees for George Guthrie’s family, but I haven’t found any evidence to verify it. William Guthrie 1738IRE-1828PA & Margaret (MNU) are supposed to be George’s paternal grandparents, and James Guthrie 1759IRE-1760IL & Mary (MNU) his parents. According to this data, we might expect to see James Guthrie living in Pike Run in 1820, but there are no James Guthrie households there at the time. I don’t believe these names and individuals apply at all, nor am I sure they exist.

There are 2 other Guthrie households in Pike Run in 1820:

Wm Guthry
Enumeration Date: 7 Aug 1820
1M 26-44 (born 1776-1794)
1F 16-25 (born 1795-1804)
1F under 10 (born 1811-1820)
Engaged in Agriculture: 1
Total persons: 3
Note: There is no comment about William being foreign-born

John Gutry
Enumeration Date: 7 Aug 1820
1M & 1F 45 and over (born 1775 or earlier)
1M & 1F 16-25 (born 1795-1804)
1M 10-15 (born 1805-1810)
Note: There is no comment about John being foreign-born.

There are also 2 Keys households in Pike Run in 1820:

James Keys
3M & 1F 16-25 ( born 1795-1804)
1F 26-44 (born 1776-1794)

Jacob Keys
1M 26-44 (born 1776-1794)
1M & 2F under 10 (born 1811-1820)

I found no other Guthrie households (including variant spellings) in 1820 PA with occupants listed as being of foreign birth, which would presumably be the case for George Guthrie’s parents and grandparents if they were living there. Could be an omission, or an indication that George had moved to PA from elsewhere in America before his marriage. There is a Jane Guthery, 55, living with the family in 1850 Somerset, Washington, PA. The census indicates that she was born in Ireland. Possibly a sister or widowed sister-in-law to George.

The biographical sketch of George and Margaret’s son Thomas Guthrie states: “The parents of our subject were George and Margaret Guthrie, natives of the town of Inniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland. They emigrated to America when quite young, settling in Pennsylvania, where they were married and afterward made their home, thirty miles south of Pittsburg, in Washington County.”

He was elected Justice of the Peace and in the course of his duties rendered judgment against a desperado who afterward murdered him in his store. There was a requisition for the assassin from Arizona, to which place he was taken and hung for a murder committed in that territory. George Guthrie was married, and left his widow with one child, a daughter, Ettie.” (Source: Bio of Thomas Guthrie)

Only last week George Guthrie, the agent of the company at Richmond, Arizona, a town near Clifton, was shot and instantly killed under circumstances entirely unwarranted. (article continues)”

1864: MARRIAGE (2ND) of SON – WILLIAM KEYS GUTHRIE
Champaign County, Illinois, USA

This marriage needs verification. William K Guthrie married Catharine Moodey on 6 Feb 1864. Campaign County is the neighboring county to Vermilion, so it is certainly within the realm of possibility that this is a legitimate match for William. However, it also means that the marriage ended either in divorce or that Catherine died within a year, for there is another marriage listed for William K Guthrie, and this one in Effingham where he moved after Vermilion.

1865: MARRIAGE (3RD) of SON – WILLIAM KEYS GUTHRIE
Effingham County, Illinois, USA

William K Guthrie married Margaret Wood on 1 May 1865. No children found for this marriage. Their union ended either in divorce or Margaret’s death by 1868 because William K Guthrie married yet again in Effingham.
