OCCUPATION: Blacksmith
MILITARY SERVICE: Army – Rank: Private Soldier – Company G. 13 PA Cavalry
MARRIAGE 1: SUSAN M WOLF about 1850-1858 in Pennsylvania, USA

DEATH LOCATION: Wallaceton, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, USA
BURIAL LOCATION: Bigler, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, USA. Plot: Row 20.
NOTES:
James G Guthrie is a prospective, but likely child of James P Guthrie & Martha Fansey. He is living in the right place at the right time to be one of the unidentified children. One of his sons is belongs to GFG6, which would make James G Guthrie an inferred GFG6 match.

James was born in Williamsport, Lycoming, PA in Feb 1825. He was twice married. First to Susan M Wolf by whom he had 5 children. Their marriage took place between 1850 and 1858. The census records for 1850 show a Susan Wolf living with the Lohr family in Somerset, PA, but also a James Guthrie and wife Susannah Guthrie living in Jefferson, PA. James and Susan’s eldest known child was not born until about 1859. The couple and any children have not been found in the 1860 census, which may have identified other children or provided a better picture of their marriage date.

James G Guthrie (also listed as Guthery) was served as an Army private in Company G 13 PA Cavalry during the Civil War. (US Army Register of Enlistments, Civil War Pension Index, 1890 Veterans Schedule, Veterans Burial Card). Enlistment records list him as 21 with grey eyes, brown hair, and dark complexion, standing at 5’10” tall. He was born in Lycoming County, PA and working as a blacksmith. Enlisted out of Williamsport.

When his wife Susan (Wolf) Guthrie died about 1874 the two youngest children were adopted out of the family. James remarried to Catherine Barker prior to 1880. He died 29 July 1901 in Wallaceton, Clearfield, PA.

SUSAN M WOLF aka ‘Susannah/Susann’

PARENTS: Unidentified.
BIRTH: about 1832
BIRTH LOCATION: Pennsylvania, USA
GUTHRIE CHILDREN: YES
DEATH: 1874 – 1880
DEATH LOCATION: Pennsylvania, USA, probably in Clearfield County
BURIAL LOCATION: Bigler, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, USA – Plot: Row 20.
NOTES:
Susan Wolf’s parents remain unidentified. Her husband James’ older brother, John Guthrie, had married a Catherine Wolf, a likely relation. James’ younger sister had married G Michael Wolf, another likely relation.

Since Susan’s exact marriage year is unknown, exploring census records for possible Wolf or Guthrie findings is important. Presumably, Susan and James had married by 1859 when their eldest known son was born. The 1850 census of Somerset, PA shows a Susan Wolf of the correct approximate age living with the Lohr family, either as a domestic servant, relative by marriage, or orphaned/ward. No direct parentage links are found for her. The other option in 1850 involves James. There is a young couple, James Guthrie, 26, laborer, and inferred spouse, Susannah Guthrie, 21, living in Ringgold, Jefferson, PA. No children listed. Next door are the households of John Guthrie, wife Catharine, and family; and Thomas Guthrie and wife Catharine. These are two of James G Guthrie’s prospective brothers making this record the more likely match.
