ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG8A – BRANCH B

Nelson Guthrie is frequently found in online trees as John Nelson Guthrie, but I have not found an original record listing the forename John. The source may be family letters which have been referenced, but I have not seen copies for verification.

Nelson is also found incorrectly attached to parents from the Middlesex, VA line (GFG1A), which is not genetically related to his descendants.

The genetic Y-DNA (direct paternal line) profile matches GFG8. The earliest known couple for this group is Branch A’s Thomas & Mary (Cason) Guthrie. Nelson is of the right age to be a grandson of that couple, or might descend from a related collateral line.

Nelson Guthrie spent at least 30 years of his adult life in Lincoln County, NC. Carter Guthrie, whose name is found as a bondsman on his marriage license to Catherine Lowe, and is therefore a likely relative, is enumerated in the 1800 census. This would seem to indicate that Nelson might also be living there with his parents as early as 1800. An examination of the census records shows a cluster of Guthrie households there. Nelson would only be about 12 years old in 1800. There are 2 Guthrie households with boys aged 10-15. Francis Guthrie and Thomas Guthrie are potential fathers for Nelson.

We do not currently have a direct descendant of these other families in our Y-DNA Project to confirm the connection. Testing that line would also reveal if the Vaughan Y-DNA profile extends beyond Nelson’s line of descendants.

More recent surname matches to men of the GFG8A profile are Carter and McCarter, which might indicate some significance in the naming of Nelson’s son, Carter Guthrie.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

About 1788: BIRTH of NELSON GUTHRIE
Virginia, USA

The 1850 and 1860 censuses list Nelson Guthrie’s birthplace as Virginia. The 1870 census lists it as North Carolina.

About 1789: BIRTH of CATHERINE LOWE
Maryland, USA

Descendants claim that Catherine was adopted by Thomas Lowe in 1796, the same year as his marriage to Martha ‘Patsy’ Guthrie in Lincoln County, NC indicating that Catherine is probably Patsy’s child by a previous marriage. This infers that Patsy was not a Guthrie by birth, but by marriage.

Thomas Lowe and Martha ‘Patsy’ Guthrie’s marriage presumably occurred in Lincoln County, NC. Patsy’s birth location was Orange County, Virginia. Catherine was born in Maryland. If Catherine was a Guthrie by birth her branch would likely have a MD connection.

About 1847: MARRIAGE of SON – WILLIAM JEFFERSON GUTHRIE
Tippah County, Mississippi, USA, reportedly

William J Guthrie married Martha Abigail (MNU) about 1847. According to the Cash Entry Patents for land in Tippah County, MS, William J Guthrie obtained property there in 1847 and 1848, so it is possible that the marriage did occur there. They had 7 children: John Albertis (1849), James Osborn (1850), Martha (1851), Mary (1852), Richard (1854), Agnes (1857), Nancy (1859). They lived in Tippah, MS through the 1860 census. When som of the family moved north to Illinois, William and Martha went with them. She died in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois on 21 Feb 1864 and is buried at Lax Cemetery. The DOB is right based on the 1830 estimate. The DOD is also appropriate as Nelson Guthrie is enumerated at age 20 on the 1850 census with his parents and then afterward is no longer found in the records.

1855: DEATH of WIFE – CATHERINE (LOWE) GUTHRIE
Tippah County, Mississippi, USA

No details found.

Like her brother Daniel, Mary Catherine Guthrie married in Hardeman County, Tennessee, just north of the MS-TN state line. The groom was John W Riggs. They had 1 daughter who is documented as “M C Riggs” in the 1860 census record with John, who was already a widower. Mary Catherine’s death may have occurred about 1858 at the time of MC’s birth. Likely that her daughter is named Mary Catherine for her mother. John remarried on 5 Mar 1861 in Tippah to Martha Catherine Proctor. He died in 1867 and Martha in 1881.

Our Y-DNA Participant has tested at the Y-111 marker level matching GFG8A’s Group Mode DNA (most common value at any given marker) 110/111.

DYS643 = 9 versus Group Mode = 10. Unique to this kit. Likely a recent or random genetic change not significant to the group as a whole.

One of the most common surname matches continues to be Vaughan / Vaughn. This is mirrored in the Autosomal DNA kits, which have many more matches to people of Vaughan/Vaughn ancestry than this of Guthrie ancestry.

  1. I am a descendant of Martha “Patsy” Gutherie and Simpson Bryant. through their Daughter Mary Bryant. The census record listed for 1870 is transcribed incorrectly. Mary’s first husband was J. Barden and they had a son Robert Barden. They moved back in with Simpson Bryant after the husband died. Then she later married W E or
William Edward McAlister. They had 2 daug before Mary died at 32 in Benton Co MS. My Grandmother was the older of the 2 daug. Mary Ida McAlister.
