NOTES:
A biographical sketch of Prof. Oliver Guthrie is documented in “Portrait and Biographical Record of Lafayette and Saline Counties, Missouri” containing Biographical Sketches”. Details include the following:
1.) Paternal grandfather as William Guthrie, of Scotch-Irish descent and a native of either the North of Ireland or the South of Scotland.
2.) Father: William Guthrie, a native of Hanover County, VA, a farmer who also owned boats on the James River carrying freight from Lynchburg to Richmond, a prosperous businessman. Died at 52 when his horse bolted and dragged him by the stirrup.
3.) Mother: Elizabeth Winkfield (actually Wingfield), born in Ablemarle County, VA, a daughter of a physician and surgeon. She died in Amherst County on 26 Sep 1828.
4,) Oliver Guthrie was the next to youngest of 14 children, of whom 13 grew to mature years. Only 2 of them still living at time of publication in 1893.

Timeline:
c1837: Oliver’s early education occurred in the log schoolhouse, but later at Lynchburg High School. He began teaching at 19 years old in Amherst and adjacent counties.

c1839: Next went to Winston County, Mississippi, teaching for 2 years. He was also licensed as a Minister of the Gospel and entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church, remaining for only 1 year before entering the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He connected to Sharon College under Dr. Beard. Next taught in Alabama.

c1841: Returned to Virginia, teaching there for 5 years.

1842: On 17 Sep 1842, Oliver Guthrie married Frances Mead. She was the daughter of Rev. Stith Mead, a local Methodist Episcopal Minister. He was also responsible for the founding of the Lynchburg Virginian newspaper.

1846: The Guthrie family moved west to Saline County, Missouri, locating in Cambridge. As Principal, Prof. Guthrie took charge of a boarding school, remaining in that position for 1 year. Went to Monticello as Principal of a similar institution.

1848: Established a female school in Lexington, which he controlled for two years.

1850: Oliver headed to California on horseback, helping to drive 100 head of milk cow. Perhaps this was the same journey that took his brother, Lawrence Perry Guthrie, to California. Oliver was thrown from his horse and slightly injured. The company disbanded at Santa Fe and he returned to Missouri by train. In September 1850, he began teaching at Westport, founding another female school, heading that institution for 5 years.

1857-1860: Oliver changed occupations for a time working in merchandising in Morristown for about 3 years, around which time the Civil War broke out (1861). Oliver returned to the field of education where he taught school and afterwards was Principal of the Men’s Frankfort School in Saline County for 3 years.

“William Mead Guthrie, the oldest child of Frances Mead and Rev. Oliver Guthrie, was born in Amherst Co., Va., July 27, 1845. His parents moved to Missouri in 1847. During the war between the States, 1861-65, he was shot by the Kansas Jay Hawkers, while standing in his father’s yard, in Cass Co., Mo. He never recovered entirely from that wound, died after a long and painful illness at New Frankfort, Saline Co., Mo., February 6, 1869. His family were Southern people, and during those perilous times, all Northern people were bitter against those of Southern blood. He died unmarried.” (Mead, p.42)

They were the parents of eight children: Edmund Lee Dolan, born October 3, 1866 at Morristown, Mo., died October 10, 1867, was buried in Freeman Cemetery; Frank Linley Dolan, was born April 13, 1868, died June 24, 1900; Walter Stuart Dolan was born April 18, 1870, was married to Miss Saphromia Berry, November, 1896; Eugene Walton Dolan was born May 1, 1872, at Freeman, Mo.; Cora Bell Dolan was born July 20, 1874, died January 24, 1894; Iola Maud Dolan was born November 14, 1877, at Freeman, Mo.; Clyde Bernard Dolan was born May 7, 1881; Ivy Ruby Dolan was born April 22, 1884. “Charles Anthon Guthrie, fifth child of Rev. Oliver Guthrie and Frances Mead, was born in West Port, Mo., February 28, 1852, died in Marshall, Mo., November 19, 1895. Lies at rest in Ridgepark Cemetery, the family burying ground.” (Mead, pp.43-44)

Charles suffered from “brain trouble” after a severe sunstroke. The biographical sketch on his father, Prof. Oliver Guthrie, published in 1893, mentioned that son Charles was in the asylum in Nevada, Missouri.

“Prudence Oliver Guthrie, seventh child of Francis Mead and Rev. Oliver Guthrie, was born May 12, 1857, in Morristown, Cass Co., Mo.; married Mr. William Addison Marshall of Kentucky, in 1882. They were the parents of five children: Bernice, born at Miami, Mo., March 10, 1884, died at the age of seven years with diphtheria. The second child died in infancy. William Addison Marshall, Jr., third child, was born February 1, 1889, died March 16, 1912, at the age of twenty-three. James Guthrie Marshall, fourth child, was born January 26, 1896. Marion Mead Marshall, fifth child, was born June 20, 1899. The last two named children have their home in Kansas City, Mo. at present. William Addison Marshall died in Callaway Co., Mo. at the age of sixty-one years. Prudence Olivia Marshall died in Kansas City, Mo., October 29, 1918, at the age of fifty-nine years.” (Mead, p.44)

“Ida May Guthrie, eighth child of Rev. Oliver Guthrie and Frances J. F. Mead, was born October 12, 1860, in Morristown, Cass Co., Mo., died at her home in Marshall, Mo., March 20, 1908; lies in the family burying ground in beautiful Ridge Park Cemetery. She was never married.” (Mead, p.44)

OBIT: Miss Ida M. Guthrie passed peacefully to the world beyond last Thursday night after a long illness of neurosis, aged 47 years. She had been a patient sufferer for three years at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mary Burnham, on East Vest Street, and although she never expected to get well, she bore her misfortune without complaint. Funeral services were held at the residence at 10 am Sunday conducted by Rev. J.Q. Partee.
