CHILDREN:

William A Guthrie
1842SCT – 1913IL

William was born in Paisley, Scotland about 1842. One would think we could find his birth record in the OPR, but I have not found one. By the time he was 10 years old, the family was already living in Barton, Wentworth County, Canada West (Ontario). His father was working as a gardener. Their religion was listed as United Presbyterian, which was a small number compared to those attending the Kirk of Scotland or Church of England. In 1861, William was 19, single, and still living with the family who were in Huron, Canada West. His father was listed as a farmer. William was twice married. First to Jessie Morrison with whom he had 1 son: Andrew Guthrie. After her death in 1870, he married Selena Jane White. They had 3 daughters: Flora M Guthrie, Jennie Viola Guthrie, and Cora Mabel Guthrie. He was employed as a carpenter and lived at Rock Island, Illinois.

Robert Guthrie
1844SCT – 1893IL

According to the following biographical sketch from the History of Mercer and Henderson Counties, Robert was born in Dumbartonshire, Scotland on 16 Aug 1844. This is the same location that Andrew’s younger brother, Samuel Guthrie later married in 1852. Robert met and married Isabella Stuart in Huron, Ontario, Canada. The family had already moved to Illinois in 1864, so it appears that Robert returned to Huron for the marriage. Robert was a farmer. He and Isabelle became parents to 7 children, 3 of whom died during infancy or childhood. The sketch below does not mention Mary Belle or their youngest child, Ruth. Robert died on 9 Augut 1893 in Aledo, Mercer, Illinois. Probate records are listed at the Family Search Records collection under Estate Files 1887-1898 Vol 2167, no 2125-2147, Robert Guthrie Heirs, no 2140, images 418-440.

Martha Brewster Guthrie
1846SCT – 1931MD

Here is another child reportedly born in Dunbartonshire, Scotland without an OPR record for verification. I’m not sure what the original source was for the birth location. The middle name ‘Brewster’ should be treated as a clue. The name is found more frequently in the OPR records of Renfrew than Dunbarton. She lived in Canada with the family and was about 18 when they moved to Mercer County, Illinois. It was there that she married Rufus Park on 1 January 1868. Rufus was a farmer whose parents had been born in Pennsylvania and settled in Illinois. Rufus & Martha’s 5 children were born in Illinois. They moved to Alexandria, Thayer, Nebraska and lived there for the next 13 years. Rufus was in St Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri when he died of surgical complications after a burst appendix. Martha moved in with her daughter Jessie, son-in-law Moses Barlow, and family in Baltimore, Maryland until her death on 10 Feb 1931. Her will was probated in Nebraska. She and Rufus are buried at Alexandria Cemetery in Alexandria, Thayer, Nebraska.

Andrew D Guthrie
c1849SCT – 1930OR

The Find a Grave site lists Andrew’s DOB as 1 July 1848 in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Andrew married his wife Lula Fadelila Cornell in Thayer County, Nebraska on 21 March 1878. They had another ceremony in Seattle on 28 May 1908 close to the date of their 30th anniversary. The King County, Washington Marriage Record between Andrew D Guthrie and Lula Cornell identifies his birthplace as Dunbarton, Scotland and lists his parents Andrew Guthrie and Susanna Thompson. He worked as a shepherd, a common book agent, and a missionary. Andrew died on 9 Jan 1930 in Multnomah, Oregon. Lula survived him by 33 years. She died in St Helena, Napa, California on 23 July 1953.

Elizabeth Brown Guthrie
1852CAN – 1922CA

Elizabeth was the first of Andrew & Susanna’s children born in Canada. The family had arrived shortly before the 1851 census. She was enumerated as a 2-year old in the Hess household, likely located next to the Guthrie’s home, which included a Martha Tipping (noted to be Martha Thompson in 1861) who might have been her grandmother or grand-aunt. They were all living together in the same log homestead in Huron, Canada West (Ontario) in 1861. Elizabeth was about 19 when the family was settled in Preemption, Mercer County, Illinois during the 1870 census. She married Farquhar Stuart on 9 August 1871 in Mercer. They settled in nearby Rock Island, IL where he worked as a barber and later became a physician after graduating from three medical schools. They had four children prior to his tragic railway death in 1893. Elizabeth and her daughter Anna moved to eastern Illinois and were living in Evanston, Cook County in 1900.

Unidentified Infant
Birth/Death Unconfirmed – Possibly 1851
According to an obituary written by Rev S.L. Guthrie, his mother Susanna Thompson Guthrie was the mother of 10 children, one of whom died in infancy. The 1851 census notes a death in the family within the year 1851.

Susan Guthrie
1853CAN – 1921KS

Susan Guthrie was born on 14 April 1853, probably in Wawanosh, Huron, Canada. The 1861 census lists it as Upper Canada. She moved to Mercer County, Illinois as a child with her parents and the rest of the family. Susan was about 17 at the time of her marriage to Oscar George Park on 24 Oct 1870. They lived in Preemption, Mercer, IL during the 1870 census, then moved to Kansas. They raised a large family. Oscar found work as a gardener, a farmer/truck gardener, and later a traveling salesman for a baking company. Susan died on 21 May 1921 in Concordia, Cloud, KS. Her husband Oscar outlived her by 15 years. He died in Concordia on 19 Jul 1936. They are buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Born on 7 October 1856 in Canada, presumably in Wawanosh, Huron County, Margaret Miller Guthrie moved with her family to Mercer County, Illinois before 1870. She married George McIntosh Stuart in Gilchrist, Mercer County on 27 October 1880. His family had also come to Mercer from Wawanosh. He was a physician who attended The Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL. They had three children. She was only 49 at her death on 5 Nov 1905. George later remarried to Minnie Ball about 7 months later. He died on 11 Nov 1918 in Springfield, Spry, Nebraska.

Samuel Leslie Guthrie was born in Wawanosh, Huron, Canada in November of 1859. Though he was raised in the Presbyterian faith, he chose to become a Methodist Episcopalian minister. He married Susan Hannah England on 28 August 1895. They resided in Arizona where Samuel farmed and performed his ministerial duties. He and Susan had a son, Gordon Warren Guthrie, who died of a scorpion sting in February 1898. Less than a year later, Rev. Guthrie also died after an acute illness. His widow, Susan never remarried. She became a school / music teacher and lived out her days in Tempe, Arizona. Samuel, Susan, and Gordon Warren Guthrie are buried at Tempe Double Butte Cemetery.

Jessie Cameron Guthrie
1863CAN – 1907OH

Jessie was born in St Helens, Wawanosh, Ontario on 20 December 1863. The family soon moved to Mercer County, IL settling in Preemption. She did not marry until the age of 34. The marriage took place in York, Ontario on 27 Dec 1897 to Olin Hanson Basquin, born in Dows, Iowa, living in Cranston, Illinois, working as the director of scientific work in the Luxfer Prism Company. Jessie had been living in Toronto at the time. That same year he was noted in an Australian Gazette for his improvements in vault lights. On 12 May 1899 Olin and Jessie applied for a US Password. They had been living in Evanston, IL where he worked as an engineer, but left in January of 1898 for Berlin where it was expected they would be for less than 5 years. Olin applied for the passport for the purposes of identification. Their son Harold Guthrie Basquin was born during their time in Germany, which is documented with a German Record of Birth in Charlottenburg. Son Maurice H Basquin was born after their return to Evanston, IL in 1902. Olin was an assistant physics professor and professor of applied mechanics at Northwestern University. He later became the Vice President in charge of engineering for the Haskelite Manufacturing Corporation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Jessie died in Cleveland, Ohio on 7 September 1907. She had developed an infection after a car accident. Olin remarried to Anna Stuart. Olin was on vacation in California when he died on 30 March 1946.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1815: BIRTH of ANDREW GUTHRIE

The memorial page at Find a Grave lists him as Andrew William Guthrie. I have not found a document to confirm the use of that middle name. Considering the repetitive use of the name William in the Branch M families, it seems very likely that the father of these 4 brothers was also named William. Since the OPR don’t provide obvious clues, one other source is the census. The 1841 census of Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland provides one detail as to why none of the boys can be found in the Birth Records of Scotland. It lists the entire family’s birth location as Ireland.

1819: BIRTH of SUSANNA THOMPSON

1840: MARRIAGE of ANDREW GUTHRIE & SUSANNA THOMPSON

Thomas Neilson, male, 35, Laborer, born Ireland
Thomas Gordan, male, 15, Tin Smith, born n
Neighboring Households: Gallaway, Yancy, McNeil
Notes: No relationships are listed. Andrew married Susanna Thompson in 1840. William did not marry Gennie Totten until 1842. Martha Tipping/Thompson is living near or with Andrew and Susanna after their move to Canada during the 1851 and 1861 censuses. The name ‘Martha Brewster’ is used for one of Andrew and Susanna’s daughters. Martha Brewster is old enough to be the mother of the 4 brothers, but she could easily be another relation. In 1841, brothers Samuel Guthrie and Edward Guthrie would be 11 and 9 years of age respectively. Where are they? Not found in the census records for Scotland.

1842: BIRTH of SON – WILLIAM A GUTHRIE
Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland on 30 March 1842
The birth location of William A Guthrie is based on his parents’ last known location a year earlier. No OPR birth or baptismal record has been noted.

1844: BIRTH of SON – ROBERT GUTHRIE
Dunbartonshire, Scotland on 16 August 1844
This birth location was revealed in a biographical sketch of Robert Guthrie on the History of Mercer County. He was under 10 years of age when the family moved to Canada and is listed with them in the 1851 and 1861 Canada Censuses.

1846: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – MARTHA BREWSTER GUTHRIE
Martha was born in Scotland. There is no documentation of the location, but since the trend is migration from Renfrew to Dunbarton, it would presumably be Dunbartonshire. This daughter’s name is also a potential family clue. As the 1841 census revealed, the family was living with a woman by the name of Martha Brewster. Was she the mother of Andrew, William, Samuel, and Edward, or another relation?

1849: BIRTH of SON – ANDREW D GUTHRIE
Dunbartonshire, Scotland about 1849
Andrew was the last of the children to be born in Scotland. His approximate birth year was 1849, which means he was in his infancy upon his arrival in Canada. The birth location of Dunbartonshire was recorded in Seattle Washington on his 1908 (Re-)Marriage Return.

1849: CANADIAN IMMIGRATION
Andrew & Susanna (Thompson) Guthrie and family arrived in Canada in 1849.

1850: UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS
Pequannock, Morris, New Jersey, USA
Samuel Guthrie is listed as a laborer working in the Sooter household. The Sooters are also from Scotland. [Possible match.]

1851: BIRTH of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH BROWN GUTHRIE
Canada West (Ontario), Canada on 2 January 1851
Elizabeth’s birth year may be a little off. The 1850 census already lists her as being 2 years old. The remaining census records list it as about 1851.

1851: BROTHER – WILLIAM & GENNIE (TOTTEN) GUTHRIE and FAMILY IMMIGRATE to CANADA
