ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG2A BRANCH O

Like many other adoptees, Ahiel Guthrie’s origins remain cloaked in mystery, but with DNA technology and some luck we have some new clues.

Guthrie Genealogy was informed by an Ancestry user, “According to a cousin, Patta Goodwill presented Ahiel for adoption in Tolland County, Stanford, Conn. in 1793.” No court documentation of this adoption has been found to corroborate the statement. Martha ‘Patty’ Goodwill 1773 MA – 1831MA is presumably the birth mother of Ahiel Guthrie. He would have been about 5-6 years old at the time, not an infant. He reportedly had a sister who died young, but whether that was a biological sister, or one from his adoptive family is unknown. The identities of Ahiel’s adoptive parents are also unknown.

Despite Ahiel’s use of the Guthrie surname, the lack of records led his descendants to question whether the man was indeed biologically a Guthrie, or if his adoptive family provided him with the name. Autosomal DNA testing hinted at some ties to New England Guthrie families. Now there is conclusive evidence. A direct line descendant participating in Y-DNA testing matches the genetic profile for Guthrie Family Group 2A.

Based on birth place and common residences, the most likely family ties within this very large genetic group belong to GFG2A – Branch F: Descendants of John Guthrie and Abigail Coe. Specifically, the line associated with their son James Guthrie Sr (1732CT – 1804NY) and Abigail Betts. This part of the family moved from Connecticut to Berkshire, County, Massachusetts by 1771. The Goodwill family lived in Wilbraham, Hampden, Massachusetts. Patty Goodwill was born there on 24 Nov 1773.

Online trees have linked James Guthrie Sr & Abigail Betts’ son, Joseph Guthrie, J.P., as Ahiel’s father, but without noting their reasons for his selection. Joseph Guthrie moved to Sherburne, Chenango, NY about 1792, so he is technically a candidate, but had no direct connection to Hampden, MA. His brother, Dr Samuel Guthrie (1756-1808) has a connection to both Stafford, Tolland, CT and to Brimfield, Hampden, MA. There was also a gap of several years after his wife Sarah’s death about 1784, and his 1789 marriage in Stafford to the widow, Mrs Anna (Bicknell) Wickmal.

Opportunity of time and place would appear to point toward Dr Samuel Guthrie as a more probable candidate than his brother. Further Y-DNA testing may support the Branch F theory, however even if it does, it would probably take the participation of multiple descendants to determine if there is a closer familial relationship to one brother versus the other.

Other candidates to consider:
1.) Abel Guthrie 1764CT-1843 who married Olive Fuller in Berkshire, MA in 1788. He was 24 at the time of his marriage. Ahiel would have been born within a year of that marriage if Abel is the correct father. Abel fought in the Rev War enlisting in NY and moved his family there prior to 1800. Note that we still need a YDNA candidate to verify the placement of Abel’s father, John, in GFG2A-Branch F.

2.) Some online trees add Joseph Guthrie (1733CT-1808OH) as a candidate, but there seems to be no evidence of his presence in MA or NY. Prior to his move to Ohio, he lived in Connecticut, which is true of all of the Branch F men of his generation. Potential, candidates would be his sons Truman (born 1765) and Stephen (born 1768), presumably based on their ages, but it is documented that Truman was physically in Marietta, OH on 3 July 1788 after his father had given him a share in the Ohio Company. He returned home after sowing what is said to be the first wheat sown in that territory, and then the following Spring in 1789 he and his brother Stephen returned to OH where they remained. There does not seem to be any opportunity for Truman or Stephen to be in CT or MA.

If anyone has documentation on Ahiel’s origins, adoption, birth/adoptive family, to contribute, please send it this way.
