NOTES:
John and Mary (Fuller) Guthrie raised their family in Rockbridge County, Virginia living on the Cedar Creek property that was located near the Natural Bridge (now a State Park) on Thomas Jefferson’s land. They sold that land in 1805 and moved to Ohio. John Guthrie shows up on the ‘Miscellaneous Townships’ Tax List for Hamilton County, OH in 1808.

I did not find any deeds specific to Hamilton County listed under John’s name, but there are some for his son Robert Guthrie, which also identify Robert’s wives Hannah McGillard and Amy Ent. After time in Springfield Township, Robert moved to Cincinnati.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1756: BIRTH of JOHN GUTHRIE
This is an estimated DOB based on his abet of 20 during the 1776 Provincial census of Elizabeth Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland

1777: FAMILY MOVES to VIRGINIA
John’s father, Robert Guthrie, purchased 229 acres in Rockbridge County, Virginia on 1 Dec 1777 from Hugh Bradford. Yet Robert continues to show up in Maryland records through 1783. His brother John and nephews do show up in Rockbridge County ahead of him.

1778: ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES
Listed: John GuthrieThis is the earliest tax record listing John Guthrie. It is several years before the marriage of Robert Guthrie’s son by that name. Could he have purchased land in Rockbridge? He will later inherit land in 1789 from his father. This could also be evidence of a second man named John Guthrie who established himself in Rockbridge prior to the arrival of Robert Guthrie and his family. Note that Robert had already purchased property in 1777 (see above), but had apparently not yet moved into the area.

1782: ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES
James Guffy: 1 tyth, 7 horses, 3 cattle
Alex Guffy: 1 tythe, 3 horses, 5 cattle
Note: Robert Guthrie does not yet show up in Rockbridge County on the personal property list. James and Alexander Guthrie are both attributed to be sons of Robert’s brother John Guthrie.

John Guthrie presumably married his wife Mary Fuller prior to the 1783 birth of their eldest child in 1783.

1783: BIRTH of SON – ROBERT GUTHRIE
Frederick County, Maryland on 18 Feb 1783.

1784: ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES
