Phebe Guthrie’s first appearance in the records is the 1776 Provincial Census of Elizabeth Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland. She was listed as ‘Pheeb Guthry’ and noted to be 18 years of age.

At her father’s death, ‘Phoebe’ received a 1/12 portion of the estate.

On 25 January 1791, John Gaddberry received written consent from Esther Guthrie for his marriage to her daughter Phebe Guthrie. He signed a marriage bond with James Caruthers acting as security. The couple married on 3 Feb 1791 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Consent was merely a formality as Phebe was already of legal age being then about 33 years old.
