NOTES:

Lucy Guthrie married William Vinson on 22 Jan 1787 in Wake County, North Carolina. Reuben Vinson was the bondsman on their marriage bond. The only Guthrie household in county for the 1790 census was that of Levi Guthrie who was listed on the same census page as William Vinson and several other Vinsons. The Guthrie and Vinson families moved from Wake County, NC to Adair County, KY within a year of each other and settled on Crocus Creek and Cabin Fork Creek within a few miles of each other. The William Vinson family remained in Adair County, KY until after Levi Guthrie’s death, and whether or not that is coincidental or deliberate is unknown.

Lucy Guthrie’s placement within the Levi Guthrie / Elizabeth Yamons family is based on these connections. No original document listing them as her parents is known, and so for now Lucy is a theoretical daughter.

Identifying her family is something of a challenge because there are several variations of her identity found online. The only documentation found on her lists her as “Lucy”, yet some trees formalize her name to be Lucille. Others have compounded her name by merging her with one of two unrelated women, naming her “Elizabeth Lucille Guthrie.” One woman, Elizabeth (Guthrie) Patton, the daughter of James Guthrie (c1720IRE-1801NC) and Elizabeth MNU of Orange, NC, married Robert Patton. Like Lucy, this Elizabeth died in Illinois between 1830 and 1840. The other woman, Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Guthrie, was the daughter of James Guthrie (c1710IRE-1774atSea) and Elizabeth Dunlap, who suffered a crippling leg injury on the journey from County Cork to Virginia. Both parents died on the journey. “Aunt Betsy,” as she was known by her family, remained unmarried. Neither of these families have a connection to Wake County, NC, Adair County, KY, or the same locations in IL.
