Susannah Guthrie was William and Eleanor’s eldest daughter, but the seventh child in the family. All of the daughters were born last. She was 22 at the time of her marriage to Benjamin Batterton, a presumptive son of Amor Batterton and Sarah Harris. They married on 11 March 1790 in Bourbon County, KY and lived there throughout their lives.
Benjamin Batterton purchased 400 acres in Bourbon County, Kentucky from Jacob Myers on 12 July 1790 for 100 pounds. At the time, Benjamin was noted to be of Fayette County, KY where he had been living or at least working in the Lexington area. In 1796, the Kentucky Gazette published, “Jesse Guthrie and Benjamin Batterton want to buy old copper, brass and pewter, and they have a brass founder who will cast still cocks, and rivets, mill inks, spoon molds and mountains.” Jesse Guthrie was his brother-in-law.
“The old Batterton Homestead is about six miles west of Paris, Bourbon County, Ky. The old cabin, build over one hundred years ago, is still standing in a fairly good state of preservation. The old family burying ground is but a short distance from the cabin and the stones with their quaint inscriptions mark the resting places of the Batterton pioneers.” (Maxwell History by Houston)

CHILD 1: REUBEN BATTERTON
Born: 1791 – Died: 1819?
Spouse: Nancy Rubel (m. 31 Oct 1811 KY)
Reuben Batterton’s birth date is listed in the Batterton Bible as 11 March 1791, but his marriage and death date are not. These are found listed in American Guthrie and Allied Families, p.478.
“Reuben Batterton, son of Benjamin Batterton and Susanna Guthrie, married Oct 31, 1811, Nancy Ruben. They lived in Louisville, Ky.”
The 1830 census of Louisville, Jefferson, KY lists the Nancy Batterton Household: 1F 30-39, 1M 10-14

CHILD 2: ANNA BATTERTON
Born: 1792 – Died: 1857
Spouse: Lawson D Sims (m. 2 Mar 1826)
Anna Batterton was born 9 April 1792. She married Lawson Simms. According to AGAF, they had no children, but the Find-a-Grave site lists Lawson with two children: Cornelia Everett (Sims) Christy and Squire Shelby Sims. The author’s correspondents for this line seem to have lost track of Lawson and Anna after their move to Indiana because there was no mention of them settling in Jasper County, IA.
No marriage record has been found in the KY records for Anna Batterton’s marriage to Lawson Simms, but it is listed in the transcription of the Batterton Bible: L.D. Sims and Anna Batterton were married March 2, 1826. The information given on the family in ‘American Guthrie and Allied Families’ indicates the couple moved to Indian and had no children. Lawson Sims is listed on the Find-a-Grave site with two children, a daughter and a son.
A search of Kentucky marriage records shows a Lawson D Sims marrying on 8 Dec 1821 to a Sidney Maupin in Madison County, KY. This DOM is just prior to the years of the children’s births in 1823 and 1825. This may be the mother of Lawson’s two children. They were still very young when Anna married Lawson in 1826.
There are no direct or reverse Deeds in Bourbon County, Kentucky under the name Lawson Sims or Simms. (Bourbon County, KY Deed Index, Vol R-S – FHL 007899054 – Vol S, p.51 IMG 232)
Taking a look at Madison County, KY Deeds Grantor Index FHL007899060 – IMG481 and IMG485, there are no Lawson Sims/Simms entries showing him purchasing property. The Madison County, KY Deeds Grantee Index FHL 007899059 – IMG 373 shows no property sales.
The online FHL records for Indiana counties are ‘locked’. The Lawson D Sims household is listed in Madison, Putnam, Indiana in 1840 and 1850. Daughter Cornelia Everett Sims married John Brunell Christy in 1840 Putnam County, Indiana, and they remained in Indiana. Son Squire Shelby Sims did not marry until 1843, also in Putnam County, Indiana, to Eliza Jane Christy.
1840: 1M and 1F 40-49, 1M 15-19, 1M under 5 with 2 persons employed in agriculture. Who is the male child under 5 years of age? Possibly the Benjamin F Parson listed in the 1850 census, below.
1850: Lawson Simms, 50, Farmer, Real Estate 1080, born KY; Anne Simms, 58, born KY; Benjamin F Parson, 14 born KY; Priscilla Hanks, 5, born IN.
Lawson and Anna Sims moved to Newton, Jasper County, Iowa. The US general Land Office Records show that on 15 Sep 1854 at the land office in Fort Des Moines, IA, Lawson D Sims was issued land in Jasper County: Meridian 5th PM, Township 79-N, Range 19-W, Section 3 (AN – IA0580_104, Document Number 1293).
Anna Sims died on 27 April 1857. She is buried at Sugar Grove Cemetery in Newton, Jasper, Iowa along with her husband Lawson Sims who died two years later. Note that the Find-a-Grave memorial page lists her maiden name as Evans instead of Batterton.

CHILD 3: SARAH HARRIS BATTERTON
Born: 1793 KY – Died: 1835 IN
Spouse: Joshua Elisha King (m.13 Aug 1824 IN)
The Batterton Bible lists the birthdate of Sarah Harris Batterton as December the 5th, 1793. The bible does not list a marriage. AGAF, p.478 reads that she “married Joshua E King. They removed to Indiana. She died there, Jan. 11, 1835.” The marriage records of Monroe County, Indiana on 13 Aug 1824 list the marriage of Sarah Batterton to Elisha King. They are credited with two sons, although these may be the only children known to LRG’s correspondent.
One unsourced family tree lists her Joshua Elisha King’s death in 1829. The Batterton Bible lists Sarah’s death as being on the 31st rather than the 1st of January.

CHILD 4: ELIZABETH BATTERTON
Born: 1795 KY – Died:
Spouse: Thomas Dinwiddle (m. 23 Apr 1835 KY)
AGAF’s LRG simply states, “Elizabeth Batterton, daughter of Benjamin Batterton and Susanna Guthrie, married April 23, 1835. She died June 16, 1837,” providing no detailed information about her husband or any children. The Batterton Bible: “Thomas Dinwiddle and Elizabeth Batterton were married April 23rd, 1835.” Note that the DOD may also be wrong as the Batterton Bible does not include a death date for Elizabeth (Batterton) Dinwiddle, but instead lists another woman by the name Elizabeth for the 1837 date. This might have been an identification error, especially as Thomas’ wife Elizabeth appears to be alive during the 1850 census.
Additional marriage records in Bourbon County, KY show that Thomas Dinwiddle first married Rebecca Dewitt on 28 March 1816. Since his marriage to Elizabeth Batterton did not occur until 1835, it appears that two of the three children listed with them on the 1850 census belongs to his first wife. Elizabeth died between 1850-1854. Thomas remarried on 23 March 1854 in Greene County, Illinois to Rhoda Bandy, who is thereafter found on the 1860 and 1870 census records as his spouse.

CHILD 5: JOHN BATTERTON
Born: 1797 KY – Died: 1837 MO
Spouse: Nancy Grant (m.28 Jul 1825 MO)
According to the Batterton Family Bible, John was born on 22 Dec 1797. No marriage or death dates are recorded. It is in AGAF, p.478 we find “John Batterton, son of Benjamin Batterton and Susanna Guthrie, married Nancy Grant, July 28, 1825. He lived near Columbia, Mo. He died in Missouri in 1874.”
Batterton is mentioned in the “History of Boone County” p.640 in the biographical sketch of William Baldridge, born 26 Feb 1827. “(Baldridge) remained on his father’s farm until he was eighteen years old, when he came to Boone county. He farmed for two years, then entered the shop of John Batterton, where he learned the carpenter’s trade.”
From the time of the 1850 census, John Batterton was listed as a farmer. He died 1 January 1874 in Columbia, Boone, Missouri. His widow Nancy survived him and died sometime after the 1880 census in Linn County, Missouri.

CHILD 6: ENOCH BATTERTON
Born: 1799 KY – Died 1837 MO
Spouse: Nancy Snell (m. 28 July 1830 MO)
“Enoch Batterton, son of Benjamin Batterton and Susanna Guthrie, married Mary Snell, June 24, 1830. He lived at one time at Columbia, Mo. He died Aug. 20, 1837.” (Guthrie, ‘AGAF’)
Enoch Batterton moved to Boone County, Missouri where he married Nancy Snell on 28 July 1830. They had no known children. Enoch died at the age of 37 on 20 August 1837. Nancy remarried twice (per family tree data) and had children by those husbands, first to George Marshall Emison (who died in 1845) and secondly to John Sampson. Nancy died on 9 Mar 1878 in Fulton, Callaway, Missouri, and is buried at Miller’s Creek Cemetery in Millersburg, Callaway, Missouri. Enoch’s final resting place is unknown.

CHILD 7: WILLIAM GUTHRIE BATTERTON
Born 1801 – Died 1840
Spouse: Matilda Ward Moore (m.12 May 1830 KY)
William Guthrie Batterton was born on 15 August 1801 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He lived there the remainder of his life. On 12 May 1830 he married Matilda Ward Moore. They had three children.. The family was enumerated in the Northern District census in Bourbon for 1840: 1M and 1F 30-39, 1M and 1F 5-9, 1F under 5, with 1 person employed in Manufacturing and Trade.
William died in August of 1840 after writing a will.
Will Book L, page 357 Those mentioned–wife, Matilda Batterton; three children, Julia Ann Batterton, William Henry Batterton, Sarah Ellen Batterton. Made 10 Aug 1840. Proved 7 Sep 1840. Executrix: wife. Witnesses–J. Huntington, Peter Smith, George Rymel.
Matilda lived until 1893/94. She was still listed as the Head of Household in the 1850 census when she still had children in the household: Matilda Batterton 38; William H Batterton 17; Sarah Batterton 13; Amenious James 30; Julia James 19; Gertrude James 4/12. She was listed with a real estate value of $500.
By 1860, both daughters were married. Matilda was living in the household of Jetson W Hannah, daughter Sarah Hannah, and their sons William G and John Hannah in Centerville, Bourbon, Kentucky. William and Matilda’s son William Batterton was also living there. Daughter Julia and the James family were living next door.
During the 1870 census, Matilda was still living with her daughter Sarah, who had become widowed within the last 4 years, and grandchildren. Matilda died in 1894 in Leesburg, Harrison, Kentucky leaving a will dated 6 May 1893 and probated on 7 Sep 1894 . The Kentucky Leader in Lexington published her obituary on 8 August 1894 indicating that her death had occurred the night before on 7 August 1894.

CHILD 8: HENRY BATTERTON
Born 1803 KY – Died 1838 IL
Spouse: Ann Sparks (m.1825 KY)
The Batterton Bible lists Henry Batterton’s birth on 22 May 1803 in Bourbon County, KY where the family was living at the time.
The marriage of Henry Batterton and Ann Sparks is recorded on 4 Sep 1825 in Harrison County, KY. The marriage bond/securities were signed two days prior by Henry Batterton and Harrison Sparks listing an intention to marry between Henry Batterton and Ann Sparks.
Henry does not seem to be the man listed as the HOH is Bourbon, KY’s 1830 census as that family does not fit the profile. They were already living in Putnam County, Indiana at that time. They moved to Illinois from Indiana sometime after the following:
“On 6 Oct 1828, Ann (Sparks) Batterton, and her husband, Henry Batterton, residents of Putnam County, Indiana, sold her undivided share of her father’s farm to her brother, Harrison Sparks, and to her sister, Nancy Sparks, for $381.
A few months later, on April 14, 1829, Mary “Polly” (Sparks) Hannah and her husband, Joseph Hannah, sold her one-ninth part of the farm of her father to her brother, Harrison Sparks, and to Hugh Correll, for $350. At its June 1829 term, the Harrison County Court commissioned Harrison Sparks to act for the other heirs of William Sparks in disposing of William’s farm at a public sale. Named in the court order as children of William Sparks were: Harrison Sparks, Nancy Sparks, James Sparks, Thomas Sparks, William Sparks, Mitton Sparks, Simeon Sparks, and Ann (Sparks) Batterton. (Mary “Polly” (Sparks) Hannah had already disposed of her share.) Joseph Shawhan was the successful buyer with a bid of $13.27 per acre.” (Source: Some Descendants of William and Kesiah Sparks of Prince William County, Virginia, by Paul E Sparks, Digital Repository: sparksfamilyassn.org)
The Black Hawk War was a conflict between the United States and Native Americans led by Black Hawk, a Sauk leader. The war erupted after Black Hawk and other natives crossed the Mississippi in to Illinois from Iowa Indian Territory in April 1832, potentially hoping to reclaim land taken over by the US in the disputed 1804 Treaty of St Louis.
It is unknown if Henry Batterton participated in the Black Hawk War, but there was some association between the Batterton or Sparks family and Abraham Lincoln, who’s only wartime service as a soldier was during that conflict.
1840: MARCH 9. (Abraham) Lincoln is appointed guardian for infant heirs of Dr. Jacob M. Early, captain of his company in Black Hawk War. Also as guardian, of William, Henry, and John Batterton, Lincoln files guardian’s answer in T. M. Suiter v. Thomas W. Sparks, administrator of Henry Batterton.

Ancestry User Sprice8260: “Catherine Gorden, who married William in Sangamon County, IL. I beleve Catherine Gorden is the same woman who was a maid in Abraham Lincoln’s household in 1850. Abraham Lincoln also may have been appointed guardian to John and Henry Batterton after the death of their father in Indiana in 1838 – the family moved back to the Sangamon County area after 1838, likely to be closer to more family members.”
The 1850 Census of Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois:
Abram Lincoln, 40, M, Attorney at Law, KY
Mary Lincoln 28, F, KY
Robert Lincoln 7, M, ILL
Catharine Gordon 18, F, Ireland
Henry’s widow, Anna (Sparks) Batterton, was still very much alive in 1840 when Abraham Lincoln was appointed as the guardian of her three sons. She remarried on 4 March 1844 in Sangamon, Illinois to Andrew Beck, who died about six years later. The 1850 census shows Anna Beck, 48, as the head of household with real estate valued at $2000, born in KY; Henry Batterton, 16, farmer, born in Indiana; John Batterton, 14, born in Indiana.
The 1860 census of District 16, Sangamon, IL lists William Battlerton, 32, his son Thomas, 8, mother Ann Beck, 58, and brothers Henry Batterton, 26, and John Batterton, 24.

CHILD 10: SAMUEL BATTERTON
Born 1806 KY – Died 1890
Spouse: Susan Rebecca Allen (m. 8 Sep 1836 MO)
Born on 20 Dec 1806, Samuel Batterton grew up in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Neither his marriage nor death is recorded in the Batterton Bible. Other sources report that he is the Samuel Batterton who married Susan Rebecca Allen on 8 Sep 1836 in Boone County, Missouri. The county census records for 1830 show a Samuel Batterton household, but he appears married with children, and there are no signs of older children in the 1840 household linked to this man.

Susan died in 1853. Samuel’s 1860 census record has not been found. In 1870, he was living in the home of his eldest son, John T Batterton in Columbia, Boone, Missouri. During the 1880 census, he was living the home of his youngest son, D. H. Batterton in Belton, Bell, Texas, and still working as a carpenter. He died in 1890.

CHILD 11: ELIAS BATTERTON
Born 1808 – Died 1859
Spouse: Katherine ‘Kitty’ Ann Smith (m.15 May 1834 KY)
Uncertain Relationship: Jane – 1840s
Elias Batterton was born on 6 November 1808 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Listed as “Eli B Batterton” in the obituary of his son Wallace. He was 25 when he was approved as administrator of his father’s estate, along with his mother Susanna Batterton. Elias married Katherine Ann Smith on 15 May 1834, the marriage bond being signed on the 13th. They had 4 sons and 1 daughter.
The 1840 census: Elias Batterton Household – 1M 30-39, 1F 20-29, 1M under 5. Persons employed in commerce: 1.
Something is either wonky with the 1850 records, or this couple has separated and potentially divorced between 1845 and 1850.
The 1850 census lists Elias Batterton living with an inferred spouse named Jane, his sons James and Benjamin, whose ages appear reversed, and two girls named Mary and Julia. His (former?) wife Kitty is nowhere to be found in the 1850 census, nor are eldest son Nicholas, youngest son Wallace, and the infant Josie who was born in June and may or may not have been listed in the census anyway.
Who is Jane? Are the girls Mary and Julia daughters of Jane and a former husband, or are they also the children of Elias Batterton?
Where was Kitty living during the 1850 census? Since her daughter Josie was listed as being born in 1850, after the births of the above Mary and Julia, is Josie actually Elias’ daughter? Or is 1850 a false birth year acquired later in life to make her younger? The 1860 census lists her as 14 rather than 10.
Elias died 7 June 1859 in Bourbon, KY. There is no sign of Jane listed as a Head of Household in the 1860 census. One unsourced tree lists her death year as 1851. Mary and Julia have not been identified in other records.
The 1860 census finds “Catherine Batterton, 41,” living in the home of Amanda Smith, 34, possibly a widowed sister-in-law. Also there are Ben Batterton, 20; James H Batterton, 18; Will W Batterton, 16; and Joseph Batterton, 14, who seems to be Josephine ‘Josie’ misidentified as a male.
Kitty died in 1886. She was listed in the 1860 census living in the household of Amanda Smith, along with some of her children: Ben, 20, James H 18, Will W 16, and Josephine 14 (misidentified as Joseph).
The 1870 census has Ben Batterton, 30, listed as the HOH, with Katharine Batterton, 55, William Batterton, 26, his wife ‘Eliza’ (Elice), and son Frank, 4; and James Batterton, 28. Daughter Josie married George W. Server in 1867 and was already out of the household by this time.
Son Benjamin Batterton either moved away or died after this census. In 1880, Catherine, listed as “C. Batterton, 65, white, female, farmer, is back as the Head of Household, along with her son W. W. 35, laborer, daughter-in-law Elsie 30, keeping house, and grandson Frank 13, at school. Catherine’s mother, (Nancy E Shawham Smith Rush Reading) listed as R. Reding, white, female, 80, at home, is living with them.

CHILD 12: BENJAMIN ABBOTT BATTERTON
Born: 1810 – Died: 1863
Spouse: Mary Jane George (m. 5 Nov 1849 KY)
Benjamin Abbott Batterton was born 24 July 1810 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. His mother Susanna was about 43 at the time of his birth, her twelfth child during the course of their twenty-years of marriage to date. His father, Benjamin Batterton Sr died in 1833, when he was about 13 years old.
On 5 Nov 1849, Benjamin A Batterton married Mary J George. They were listed together, along with his mother Susannah Batterton, on the 1850 census of Bourbon County, KY. Susannah died in 1852.
The 1860 census of Paris, Bourbon, Kentucky lists the family on their farm:
B. A. Batterton, 49, farmer, real estate value: $10,400, personal estate value: $6,000
Mary J Batterton 36
Elizabeth G Batterton 7, attended school
B A Batterton 3
Mary S Batterton 2
Benjamin Abbott Batterton died on 10 March 1863.
“MARY J. BATTERTON, farming, P. O. Paris, is a representative of one of the old families of Bourbon County. She was born March 1, 1823, and is the daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth (Chowning) George, and the granddaughter of Gabriel George. In 1849 she was married to Benjamin A. Batterton, who died in 1863. Three children were born to them: Elizabeth, now wife of T. J. Shepherd, formerly of Georgetown, Ky, but now a resident of Chattanooga, Tenn.; B. Alfred and Mary S., both unmarried and residing with their mother. The daughters are members of the Christian Church, and the sons’ political views are Democratic. Mrs. Batterton has resided on her present farm since 1849, which consists of 140 acres of fine land, which by her judicious management and the aid of her son, has been and is a comfortable, pleasant and well kept home, as well as a valuable piece of property.” (Source: Perrin, William Henry (1882) ‘History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison, and Nicholas Counties, Kentucky’ O.L. p.477 “About 1758 three brothers by the name of Batterton came from England to the Colonies. In 1778 one of the brothers with a party of others came down the Ohio River from Virginia, landed where Maysville now stands, built cabins and marked trees. A short time afterward, Batterton was killed by the Indians. His Brother Amor settled in Virginia and married Sarah Harris. Some years later he removed to Kentucky and was one of the first land owners of Lexington.”
p.478 The records sent us by those claiming descent from Amor Batterton Sr, differ in some respects and may contain errors. We include a part of these records in the belief that they will lead to further research and will perfect the early history of these Battertons. Benjamin, Abraham, Amor, Jeremiah, Moses, Sarah, and Henry born in 1770 were probably all children of Amor Batterton, Sr. Moses, James, Elizabeth, Nancy, and Henry Batterton were brothers and sisters and the children of Samuel Batterton born 1758,”
Benjamin Batterton, presumptive son of Amor Batterton, Sr, was born Sept 2, 1787 in Virginia; died June 29, 1833 in Bourbon County, KY. He married March 11, 1790, Susanna Guthrie, who was born Set. 27, 1767; died May 11, 1852, (see p.59).”
