HENRY GUTHRIE / GUTHRIDGE

Occupation: Unknown
Marriage: None Known
Death / Location: Abt. 3 Apr 1711 in Middlesex County, Virginia
Burial / Location: Unknown, presumably in Middlesex County, Virginia
Notes:
The surname Guthrie has been spelled many ways in early records, and is also very similar to other potentially related or unrelated names like Goodridge. The Middlesex records manage a combination of all, but the records involving Henry appear to belong to the man most likely to be the earliest John Guthrie living in Middlesex, VA.
On 7 Sep 1674, Thomas Loe, planter, sold to John Gutteridge & Nicholas Paine, planters, 500-600acres patented by Loe.
There is no mention in the Christchurch Parish Register of the marriage of John Guthrie (or any variant spelling) to a woman named Rebecca. The minister serving the community at that time was Rev. John Shepherd (bet. 1668-1683). Near the end of his life and service to Christchurch Parish, the baptism of “Henry Guthridge ye sone of John and Rebe. Guthridge baptiz. 5 of August” was noted. John and Rebecca were presumably married, but there is no notation in the record one way or the other, and the community ministers did not shy away from listing an infant as an illegitimate or bastard child.
There are no other children documented for this couple, nor is there any notation in the CCP register about Rebecca’s death. However, the minister himself had died in 1683, and the next minister, Rev. Duel Pead was brought over from England.
There is no evidence in the Middesex, VA records that Henry Gutteridge/Guthrie had a family. If he survived to adultood, he may be the Henry Goodrich who died about 1711. “The estate of Henry Goodrich decd is by the Court granted to Thomas Haselwood.” (Middlesex Deed Book 3 p246) – No details found.
