ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG15 – BRANCH A
Indications are that Joseph Guthrie was probably born (or immigrated to) Virginia where he likely married and his eldest children were born. Other children may have been born in Pennsylvania, suggesting that as Joseph moved westward toward Ohio, than he lived there for a time. The family finally settled in Adams County, Ohio.

DAVID GUTHRIE
1792VA – 1859IL
David Guthrie was born in Virginia about 1792. He was living in his own household in Huntington, Brown, Ohio during the 1820 census and the family remained there through the 1840 census. By 1850 David and his wife Mary had moved to Jefferson County, Illinois where they were living next door to their (inferred) son Joseph Montaque Guthrie. David died there in 1859.

*Participant B543418 could potentially be a descendant of David Guthrie. However, there is no documentation currently proving that theory. Nor are there any other established descendants of that line in the project at this time.

JONATHAN GUTHRIE
1793VA – 1865IL
Jonathan Guthrie was born in Illinois. It is believed that he served in the War of 1812 from Pennsylvania. His marriage to Sarah Dobbins took place in Adams County, Ohio on 12 April 1812. They raised a large family and were still living in Adams County during the 1840 census. Jonathan, Sarah, and most of their children made the move to Jefferson County, Illinois by 1850. Jonathan died there on 16 Oct 1865. Sarah survived him passing away in 1888.

JOSEPH GUTHRIE
1803VA – 18??
Joseph Guthrie was born in Virginia about 1803. He is a presumed son of Joseph Guthrie. During the 1850 census, he was living in the household of farmer William Gilbert, 33, and Margaret J Gilbert, 26, along with their son Samuel Gilbert, a newborn, and Eleanor Gilbert, 66. He was listed as a laborer. No additional information known about Joseph.

ELISHA GUTHRIE
1805PA – 1851
Elisha Guthrie was born in Pennsylvania about 1805. His marriage to Rebecca Caspison took place in Adams County, Ohio on 7 Jan 1830. They had 3 sons and 4 daughters. They are listed in their own household in Sprigg, Adams, Ohio in 1850 and 1860. Elisha was a farmer. He likely died between 1850-1860 in Adams County as Rebecca is listed as the Head of Household in 1860.

WILLIAM GUTHRIE
1806PA – 1871-9
William Guthrie was born in Pennsylvania about 1806. He was a wagon maker. He married Margaret Caspison in Adams County, Ohio on 4 Feb 1830, a month after his brother Elisha and her sister Rebecca also married. They had a small family. Margaret appears to have died around 1841, and William remarried within the next ten years to a Rebecca (MNU). This does not appear to be his sister-in-law as she did not become a widow until the 1860s. William died in between 1871-1879, probably in Adams County, OH.

FAMILY EVENTS & HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Before 1775: BIRTH of JOSEPH GUTHRIE
Virginia Colony, possibly
Joseph Guthrie’s birthplace and birth date remain unknown. Census records show that he was over 45 years of age in 1820, which is the only census record for his household. The Virginia locale is extrapolated from the birth locations of the men presumed to be his sons, although it is possible that Joseph was born elsewhere.
1792: BIRTH of (PRESUMED) SON – DAVID GUTHRIE
Virginia, USA about 1792
According to the 1850 census, David Guthrie was born in Virginia. His age of 58 indicates that he was born about 1792. This is later than the 1776-1784 range listed in the 1820 census, but fits the range of 1791-1800 listed in 1830 and 1840.
1793: BIRTH of (PRESUMED) SON – JONATHAN GUTHRIE
Virginia, USA about 1793
The 1850 and 1860 censuses list Jonathan Guthrie’s birthplace as Virginia. He was 55 in 1850 and 67 in 1860, so there is a little disparity in the listing of his age depending on the dates of collection.
1797: FORMATION of ADAMS COUNTY, OHIO
“Adams Co. formed from Hamilton and Washington Cos.; included much of what would become central and south-central Ohio.”
1803: BIRTH of (PRESUMED) SON – JOSEPH GUTHRIE
Virginia, USA about 1803
1803-1805: PRESUMABLY MOVED to PENNSYLVANIA
Technically, we don’t have a document that links Joseph Guthrie of Adams, Ohio to his presumed sons David, Jonathan, Joseph, Elisha and William. There is circumstantial evidence in that these men are found within a close proximity of one another at various times. Now we have YDNA proof of shared paternal ancestry between David (born in VA) and Elisha (born in PA).
1805: BIRTH of (PRESUMED) SON – ELISHA GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA about 1805
The 1850 census lists Elisha Guthrie as a 45 year old farmer born in Pennsylvania.
1806: BIRTH of (PRESUMED) SON – WILLIAM GUTHRIE
Pennsylvania, USA about 1806
The 1850 census lists William Guthrie as being born in Pennsylvania about 1806.

Kit 178599 + FF (Separate Kit 334036)
Joseph Guthrie/Unidentified (MNU) > Elisha Guthrie/Rebecca Caspion > James Robinson Guthrie/Florence Heaton Spiese (GGP)
Kit B543418 + FF
[Probable: Joseph Guthrie/Unidentified (MNU) > David Guthrie/Mary (MNU)] > William Guthrie/Katy Emeline Boyles > Thomas Franklin Guthrie/Jemima Brumley > William Sharman Guthrie/Iva Alice Tumbleson (GGP)
Family Finder / Autosomal DNA Matches: 1 (plus the 2 above)
Joseph Guthrie/Unidentified (MNU) > Jonathan Guthrie/Sarah Dobbins > Mary Jane Guthrie/John Linn Bradford > Rufus William Bradford/Mary Jane Bannister (GGP)
Findings:
The new YDNA match to a second Guthrie man matching the genetic profile of Kit 178599 indicates that the original YDNA was introduced to the family no later than Joseph Guthrie’s generation.
There is no obvious surname found amongst the short list of YDNA matches to suggest the source of the direct paternal line.
There are 3 unique differences in the YDNA markers between the two men at the Y37 level. These are currently insignificant findings as there are no other project matches for further comparison.
The three Autosomal Kits do not share DNA. This is not wholly unexpected considering the most recent common ancestor is 5 – 6 generations removed.
