Notes:

According to census records, Harvey Washington Guthrie was born about 1837 in Iowa or Missouri, or as early as 1833. Some unsourced trees list Wells County, IN. Very little is available about Harvey. He was listed with the family as “Hearvy” in Jasper County, Iowa in 1850, and was still there in 1856 for the Iowa State Census, being listed as “Harry”.

The biographical sketch of his brother, Rev. James D. Guthrie briefly mentions that Harvey “bent to California in an early day,” and that he “died in the west.”

Harvey may have left with his sister and brother-in-law Melissa and William M Blankenship when they moved to Tulare, California after their marriage in 1857. The Ancestry transcription of their household census in 1860 Township 1, Tulare, California includes a Harry Guthrie, 27, laborer, born Iowa abt 1833. A closer look at the original image indicates this is actually “Hearvy Guthrie”. A California Voter Registration list for 1866 includes Harvey Washington Guthrie, 28, Tulare, California.

The 1870 census of the Blankenship household shows that Harvey Guthrie is no longer living with his sister and brother-in-law in Visalia.

However, in Venice, Tulare County, there is a listing for a Henry W Guthrie, 33, born 1837 Missouri, working as a farm laborer. The local post office for that township is located in Visalia.

Just to make this mystery a little more complicated, Guthrie Family Group 5 – Branch F descendants also move to Tulare County, California settling in Tule River and White River. These are the family of John Franklin Guthrie and Mary Helen White. Their second son, born in 1887 happens to be named Henry Wilfred Guthrie, but he is at least differentiated from Harvey / Harry Washington Guthrie by 50 years.

Harvey Washington Guthrie’s exact date of death and the location are unknown. Some trees list 1906 without source data.
