CHILD 1: JENNIE GUTHRIE
Born abt. 1859 MS – Died 1860-66
Marital Status: Unmarried – Died Young

Jennie Guthrie was born in Mississippi in 1859. She was listed with her parents on the 1860 US census of Friar’s Point, Coahoma County, Mississippi in 1860 as a 1 year old. This is Jennie’s only appearance in the census records. Both she and her mother, Rachel (Harbour) Guthrie, died prior to 1866. Her burial location is unknown.

CHILD 2: JAMES EDWIN GUTHRIE, M.D.
Born 1860 MS – Died 1950 IL
Spouse: Eugenia Shofner
m. 16 Apr 1894 in Salado, Bell County, Texas, USA

James Edwin Guthrie was born at Friars Point, Coahoma, Mississippi on 6 December 1860 to Shed and Rachel (Harbour) Guthrie. His mother and sister died prior to 1866. Sometime between 1867 and 1870, his father moved the family to back to Texas. James was 19 at the time of the 1880 census. They were at that time living in Salado, Bell County, TX.

“Eddie” studied at Salado College (1882) and New York University Medical School (1889) becoming a physician. He was the proprietor of a drug store as its pharmacist, or as it was known, a druggist. He returned home to Salado, Bell County, Texas where he married after the establishment of his career.

A Wedding invitation from Reddin Dillard Shofner for the “marriage of his daughter Eugenia to Dr. J. E. Guthrie” at the Methodist Church in Salado, Texas was sent out to community guests. (Portal to Texas History) They lived in Salado

“Dr James Edwin Guthrie, an early Salado physician, and his wife built their first home on the same site, which is now occupied by the Stagecoach Inn offices.” (TSHA – bio on Archibald Willingham, an early Salado settler). They had 3 sons: Edwin Dillard, James Herbert, and Robert Lee. Between 1910 and 1920, James and Eugenia moved to Waco, McLennan, Texas where he continued to work as a retail druggist.

Eddie died on 4 Feb 1950 and Eugenia four years later on 4 Feb 1954

CHILD 3: ROBERT ‘LEE’ GUTHRIE
Born 1862 MS – Died 1934 CA
Spouse: Abigail Lee Atkins aka ‘Abbie’
m. 27 September 1900 in Bell County, Texas

Robert “Lee” Guthrie was born in Friars Point, Coahoma, Mississippi in July of 1862. He was already away from home at 18 and working as a farmhand in Arkansas starting what appears to have been an itinerant life. In 1900, he was 37, still single, and working as a Saloon Keeper in Skagway, Alaska. He was next found just months later in Bell County, Texas where his father and stepmother had settled. Lee’s marriage to Abigail C Atkins took place there on 27 Sep 1900.

Apparently, they returned to Alaska for a while. The Waco Times-Herald published on Friday, 27 Nov. 1908 that “Lee Guthrie, who has been in Alaska for the past few years, is expected here soon on a visit to his brother, Mark Guthrie.”

Not one to settle down, Lee and his wife moved from Texas to Santa Rosa, Sonoma, California where he purchased a Fruit Farm. They were enumerated there during the 1910 census. They were still in Santa Rosa in 1920. At that time their farm was focused on chicken production. By 1930, Lee and Abbie were living in San Francisco where they lodged at a boarding house while Lee worked as a night watchman.

On 31 December 1931, The San Francisco Examiner reported, “Police Save Couple from Suffocation. Mr and Mrs Robert L Guthrie of 964 Eddy street, overcome when a gas heater exhausted oxygen in their apartment, were saved from death by two policemen yesterday. The rescue was made by Officers Sydney Hinson and Thomas Miller.”

Lee died on 20 Sep 1934 in San Joaquin, California. After his death, Abbie returned to Texas. She died on 18 May 1946 in Houston, Harris, Texas. They had no children.

CHILD 4: MARK GILLISPIE GUTHRIE
Born 1876 TX – Died 1948 TX
Spouse: Loretta ‘Lola’ Thomson
m. 14 September 1899 in Bell County, Texas, USA

Mark Gillispie Guthrie was born in Salado, Bell County, Texas on 5 July 1876, and was a 3-year old during the 1880 census. He married at 23 to Loretta “Lola” Thomson on 14 September 1899. They had children: Evelyn, Kathleen, and Marcus Clay Guthrie. Their daughter Kathleen died very young.

Around 1903, Mark moved their family to Waco, McLennan, Texas where he worked as a druggist for the Behrens Drug Company. He remained with that company for fifteen years prior to taking a position with the National Aniline Chemical company of Chicago working out of their Kansas City, Missouri offices.

The Waco Times-Herald
Tue., 31 Dec 1918

By 1920, they were living in Waco again, but now noted on the census record to be a Traveling Salesman in the drug business. In 1940 Mark and Lola were living in Dallas, Texas. He was still in the same role as a traveling salesman. His 97-year-old mother, Amanda (Culpepper) Guthrie, was living with them at the time.

Mark Guthrie died at 71 years of age on 1 April 1948 in Waco. He was buried at Waco Memorial Park. Lola lived until 18 Aug 1965. She died at 88. Her remains were interred at Waco Memorial Park in Robinson, McLennan, Texas.

CHILD 5: IRA CULPEPPER GUTHRIE
Born 1879 TX – Died 1954 TX
Marital Status: Single

Ira Culpepper Guthrie was born on 7 January 1879 in Salado, Bell County, Texas. He was listed as a 1 year old in the 1880 census there. Attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1903.

There appears to be some confusion about whether or not Ira Culpepper Guthrie was married. The Culpepper site comments that a marriage to a Malissa J O’Neal mistakenly listed Ira as an Ira M Guthrie, but there is actually a man by the name Ira Martin Guthrie (1875-1937), a farmer and wood chopper, who married Malissa J O’Neal. He was a son of GFG1’s John Wesley Guthrie and Mary Ann Christmus from Gonzalez County, TX. That Ira died in Waco, TX in 1937.

The college yearbook:

The 1920 Census of Dallas, Dallas, Texas lists Ira C Guthrie, 41, single, and working as a salesman for an advertising company. He was living with his cousin’s family. The 1930 Census mistakenly lists him as female “Iva C Guthrie”, calls him a saleslady in advertising, and lists him as a roomer in the Olmstead household, but the other data regarding his parents’ birth locations remains consistent with Ira C Guthrie. The 1932 City Directory for Dallas, TX lists Ira C Guthrie as a salesman for Bell & Collier. In 1942, Ira Culpepper Guthrie completed his WWII Draft Registration listing his place of residence as Salado, Texas, age 63, birthplace Salado on 7 Jan 1879, and his contact person as Dr JE Guthrie, Salado. He was at the time unemployed. Ira died at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas on 18 March 1954, having lived in Dallas for 10 years. His death certificate lists him as single. He was buried at “S.A.B.” cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
