John Steele Guthrie was the second child and eldest son of William & Jane (Steele) Guthrie. He was born in Perry on 15 November 1844. As a boy he worked as a farm hand and attended school. His father had gone to California to engage in contracting work there and drowned in a river there in October of 1850 leaving the widow with six children under the age of ten including John’s infant brother William who had been born in April. His mother remarried to farmer George Knox on 24 March 1856 and the Guthrie children were soon joined by 7 Knox siblings born bet. 1856-1865.
When he was about 19 years old, John proposed marriage to Joanna J Bartley. She was 2 years older than him, the daughter of William and Ellen (Fleming) Bartley, born on 30 Jan 1842 in Perry. They forged a long and productive life together raising their children. During his early sixties, John developed heath issues and it was recommended that he move to a different climate. He headed west to California settling in Medocino County. Upon his death on 24 Nov 1911, one of his sons went to California to bring his remains back to Pennsylvania for burial. Joanna continued lived with family members until her death at age 85 on 18 September 1927. They are both buried at Kittanning Cemetery in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

CHILD 1: FLORA ELLEN GUTHRIE

Flora Ellen Guthrie was born on 24 May 1864 in Perry, Armstrong, Pennsylvania, the eldest of 11 children. She was married on 6 May 1889 to Grant Andrew Rhines, the son of Andrew Stean and Caroline M (Chamberlin) Rhines. He was a farmer and later a laborer for an Aluminum Company. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters, and lost 2 other children whose identities are unknown. Flora died 25 April 1932 in New Kensington, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, with Grant outliving her by 15 years. During the last 2 years he was living with his daughter. He died there in 9 April 1947. They are buried at Union Cemetery in New Kensington.

Born in Pennsylvania, Joanna met and married Axel Hugo Wall, a Swede who had come to the United States about 1881 from Stockholm. His parents were Gustaf Adolf & Elizabeth (Kullberg) Wall. They were living in Berlin, Hartford, Connecticut in 1910. Axel became a naturalized American citizen and was employed at the steel factory as a feeder and machinist. They had 3 daughters and 2 sons: Flora Elizabeth (1910), Elva Eloise (1912), Charles Edwin (1914), Donald Hugo (1915), and Helen Margaret (1918). Joanna was only 28 at her death on 15 Mar 1919 of bronchial pneumonia and influenza. They were living in New Kensington, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania at the time. Axel remained in New Kensington, and outlived his two eldest daughters.

Born in Brookville, PA, William was the eldest son of the Rhines family. He was 16 at the time of the 1900 census when the family was living in Warsaw, Jefferson, Pennsylvania and he was attending school. William enlisted in the Army soon 3 May 1917 serving as a private. He was honorably discharged on 17 June 1919. Upon his return he resided with his parents and found work as a factory laborer. William moved to Detroit where he married Violet Errer on 24 July 1925. She was born in Michigan in 1909, a daughter of William and Mary Errer, both of German heritage. William worked as an assembler in the Automotive Industry. He and Violet had two sons: William Grant (1927) and [Living] (1932). He signed up for the WWII draft when he was 47, and working for the Hudson Motor Car Company. William died in Detroit on 19 Feb 1987. Violet lived until 9 Aug 1989. She died in Clawson, Oakland, Michigan.

3) Merle DeWalt Rhines (13 Sep 1896 PA – 6 Nov 1918 VA)
Merle was born in Brookville, PA on 13 Sep 1896. He was living in Westmoreland, PA at the time he completed his WWI Draft Registration card listing his father Grant A. Rhines as his next of kin. Joining the U.S. Marine Corps as a private, he was assigned to Parris Island, South Carolina on 27 July 1918, and then moved to Quantico on 21 Oct 1918. At only 22 years of age, Merle contracted influenza and died of pneumonia at the Sick Quarters, Marine Barracks at Quantico on 6 Nov 1918. His remains were transferred back to Westmoreland, Pennsylvania and Merle was buried at Union Cemetery in Arnold. He was unmarried.

The Rhines family was living in Warsaw, Jefferson, Pennsylvania when son Twain Afton Rhines was born on 17 July 1899. He was enumerated there during the 1900 census. By 1910, they had moved to Perry, Armstrong Co., PA where his father was farming and Twain was attending school. Twain was 19 years old at the time of the WWI Draft. He listed his mother as his nearest relative. They were living in Parnassus, Westmoreland at the time, and he was working as a machine fitter with the US Aluminum Company. No service record found. The 1920 census lists him as a blacksmith for the railroad, which may be how Twain ended up in West Virginia where he married Mary ‘Ada’ McAnich on 24 May 1920 in Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia. Afterward, they resided in New Kensington, Westmoreland, PA. Working at the Aluminum Company again, he was a riveter and press operator. Twain and Ada had 2 daughters: Alice Belle (1921) and [Living] (1925) and 1 son: David Clyde (1929).

Lillian aka Lillie was born about 1901-1902 in New Kensington, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. She met Lorenze Wineman Pascoe, a son of John & Minnie Pascoe, living in New Kensington. He was born in 1898. Lillie and Lorenze married on 22 Aug 1918. Their only son, Merle Wineman Pascoe, died young. There are apparently a couple of errors on his death certificate. The first is that his age at death was entered as 9 years and 8 days, rather than 9 months and 8 days. Noting a 9 year old dying in 1920, someone then erased the death year and “corrected” it to 1910. Both Lorenzo and Lillie are entered as Merle’s parents, so there is no error there, but Lillie was only 9 years old in 1910, and would obviously not have given birth at that time. A DOD of 5 Mar 1920 minus 9 months and 8 days calculates exactly to 26 May 1919. This corresponds with the 1920 census listing the boy at 7 months (7/12) of age. The couple had 1 other child, daughter June Thelma, born in 1920. Lorenze was working as a clerk in the local Glass Works.
They moved to Royal Oak, Michigan by 1928 where Lorenze was employed as a clerk. Lillian and Lorenze divorced on 27 Feb 1930 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. That census year, Lorenze is listed as a Salesman in an Auto Parts Factory and is living with a new wife named Katherine, born in Georgia in 1901. By that time, Lillian and her daughter are back in New Kensington, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, and living with her parents. If Lorenze was indeed legally married to Katherine (MNU), they also separated and/or divorced. He remarried to Alice Belle (Williams) Townsend abt. 1939, a divorcee with one daughter. He died in 1965.
Lillie also remarried sometime bet. 1930 and 1940 to Vincent J Krapovich (or Krapowicz). Vincent was born in 1903 Connecticut. His father was of Russian birth and his mother German. The family lived in New Canaan, Fairfield, Connecticut. Lillie’s daughter, June Pascoe, had been living and working in Norfolk, Fairfield, Connecticut since at least 1935, and so Lillie may have moved there with her. After their marriage, Vincent and Lillian settled in Lewisboro, Westchester, New York where he worked as a Tree Surgeon and Nurseryman. They had no children. Both of them died in 1979 and are buried at Maple Avenue Cemetery in Patterson, Putnam, New York.

CHILD 3: WILLIAM FLEMING GUTHRIE

William Fleming Guthrie was the eldest son of the family. He was born 1 September 1865 (or 1867) in Armstrong County, PA. After moving to Pittsburg, William married Emma ‘Carolyn’ Ackman on 31 Dec 1894 in Allegheny, PA. He worked as a contractor drilling on the oil fields. Six of their sine children born between 1896 and 1914 grew to adulthood. During the 1930 census William was living with his son Norman Guthrie and family. Carolyn was in Waynesburg, Greene, PA with two daughters and a grandson, and was employed as a hotel maid. Both records indicate that they were still married at the time, but they later divorced for Carolyn married a Fred Miller, who was her husband at the time of her death. William died on 7 August 1936 after suffering a stroke. He is buried at the Greene County Memorial Cemetery. His former wife Carolyn Miller died on 18 Nov 1961 in Waynesburg, although her family created her grave marker to read Carolyn E. Guthrie.

The family was living in Pittsburgh when William was 4 during the 1900 census. They had moved back to Waynesburn, Greene, PA by 1910. William enlisted in the 10th Infantry Company K as a private, was discharged on 15 Feb 1916, but reenlisted on 3 May 1916 and was discharged as a US Army Corporal of Co. K, 110 Infantry, 28 Division. During the 1920 census he resided with his parents and siblings in Waynesburg while working as a contractor drilling oil. He married at 34 years of age to Lucy Kerlitha Tucker on 3 July 1930 in Harrison, WV. They remained in West Virginia. They had 4 sons and 3 daughters born bet. 1933 – 1946. William died in Clarksburg, Harrison, WV on 12 Sep 1961. Lucy was 87 at her death on 6 Feb 2000.

Born in Pittsburgh, Norman moved with his parents and siblings to Waynesburg, Greene, Pennsylvania where he attended school. He was 19 at the time of the WWI draft. He served from 2 June 1917 to 23 May 1919 including overseas duty in France from 3 May 1918 to 12 May 1919. He was appointed Corporal during his service and was honorably discharged at Camp Dix, New Jersey. Norman married on 2 June 1921 to Edith White. They had 1 son: George Norman (1922), and 2 daughters: Thelma Eileen (1923), and Electa Jean (1931). Norman died on 4 April 1982 in Grove City, Mercer, Pennsylvania. Edith hung on until she was 91. She passed on 1 Sep 1993. They are buried at Greene County Memorial Park in Morgan.

Charles was born in Pittsburgh, but the family moved to Waynesburg, Greene, Pennsylvania when he was still very young. He was too young for the WWI Draft. He married Hazel Marie Baysinger in the mid-1920s and they continued to live in Waynesburg for a time before moving to other areas in Pennsylvania, including back to Pittsburgh, and finally Grove City, Mercer, Pennsylvania. Charles worked as a laborer doing odd jobs and in 1950 was a driller in the Oil Industry while Hazel worked as a cook at a Restaurant & Retail Candy Company. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters born between 1927 and 1943. Charles died in June of 1978 in Grove City. Hazel’s death occurred on 17 Dec 1995. They are both buried at Jefferson Memorial Park in Pleasant Hills, Allegheny, PA.

Their first daughter, Dorothy Annabelle, was born on July 31st in 1905, probably either in Pittsburgh or Waynesburg, PA. She married Bruce Chester Benton presumably prior to their son’s birth in 1928. They named him Bruce Chester Benton for his father. The couple separated. In 1930, Dorothy and her son Bruce were making a home with her mother Carolyn Guthrie, and youngest sister Carolyn. Her mother was also separated at the time. Dorothy and her mother were both working at a hotel as a waitress and maid respectively, while sister Carolyn attended school. In 1940, Dorothy and Benton were living with her sister, DeEtta (Guthrie) Corwin and family in Waynesburg. DeEtta was also separated from her husband at the time. The two sisters were living together in Franklin, Greene, PA in 1950. Both were working at Fort Jackson, Dorothy as a maiden and DeEtta as a waitress. Dorothy died on 22 Feb 1992 in Multnomah, Oregon, having moved there to be with her son.

DeEtta was only 16 at the time of her marriage to Harold Thomas ‘Pete’ Corwin. He was a son of Charles ‘Delbert’ and Eliza Jane (Scott) Corwin who were living in Waynesburg. Harold was 20 at the time and working as a farm laborer. The couple had 3 children together, namely William Delbert ‘Bill’ (1925), Emogene Dorothy (1926), and Joanna May (1929). He and DeEtta separated, possibly before 1940 when he was listed as a lodger in Morris, Greene, PA. During that census year, DeEtta’s sister Dorothy, who had also separated from her husband, had moved in with her young son. Harold signed up for the WWII Draft. Their son Bill joined the US Navy and served as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class aboard the USS Midway, the first destroyer sunk by Japanese Kamikaze pilots. He was awarded with a Purple Heart and other merits for his service. The children had all moved out by 1950 and so it was just DeEtta and her sister Dorothy living together in Franklin, Greene, PA. They were both working at Fort Jackson as a waitress and maid. Dorothy moved to the west coast to be with her son. DeEtta remarried having at some point officially divorcing Pete. On 1 Jan 1961, DeEtta married Orville Albert King. He died in 1983. DeEtta’s death occurred on 9 Mar 1993 in Waynesburg. She is buried at Greene County Memorial Park.

Youngest son Marion Guthrie was only 3 months old at the time of his death in 1912. His birth record indicates that he was the 8th child of this mother, and the 6th living. The death record reveals that he died of pneumonia.
9) Carolyn Emma Guthrie (6 Mar 1914 PA – 14 Jan 1997 WV) m. Alvin Pierce Kennedy +children
Named after her mother, Carolyn was born in Waynesburg, Greene, Pennsylvania in March of 1914. Her parents separated and later divorced. She lived with her mother prior to her marriage to Alvin Pierce Kennedy around 1935. They settled in Strabane, Washington, PA. Their family included three sons: Alvin Earle (1935), [Living] (1938), John Norman (1939), and 1 daughter: Carolyn Elizabeth (1942). Alvin was 27 in 1940 when he completed his WWII Draft Card listing his wife Carolyn as his next of kin. He enlisted with the US Army serving from 1 Aug 1945 to 10 Jan 1946, with his service ended at Camp Blanding, FL on 10 Jan 1946. His application for Veteran Compensation was disallowed because he had served less than 60 days active duty during the eligibility period. Upon returning to Pennsylvania, Alvin was employed as a butcher in a Meat Store. Alvin was 62 at his death on 30 Sep 1975. Carolyn lived until 14 Jan 1997 and was in Beckley, Raleigh, WV at the time of her death. They are both buried at Oak Spring Cemetery in Canonsburg, Washington, PA.

CHILD 4: CHARLES WESLEY GUTHRIE

Charles Wesley Guthrie was born in Perry, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania on 20 August 1869. The family Post Office was located at Bradys Bend. At 18 years of age, Charles moved to West Virginia and married Margaret Alice Gilbert there on 12 July 1898. She was a daughter of Wiliam C & Indiana J (Moats) Gilbert, who had lived in Ritchie, Virginia prior to its becoming West Virginia. Her mother’s name was shortened to ‘India’ and became a family name handed down for several generations. Charles started out as an oil well driller and later as an oil contractor. Charles and Maggie were in Marietta, Washington, Ohio during the 1900 census, but that may have been a temporary move as their eldest daughter was born in Williamstown, Wood County, West Virginia. The couple had 2 daughters: India Gilbert (1906) and Minnie Bea (1908). By 1910 they moved to Lawrenceville, Lawrence County, Illinois where Charles remained until his death on 8 Jun 1930, the same day as his daughters’ marriage. Although he had been ill for some time, his death was unexpected. Maggie continued to live in Lawrenceville. She died in April of 1955. They are buried at the Lawrenceville City Cemetery in Lawrenceville.

Although India’s birth occurred in WV, the majority of her life was spent in Lawrenceville, Illinois. She married James Junior Stillwell on 28 Sep 1929. For a short time she worked as a Supply Teacher in the public school system and was afterward a homemaker. James was a gas station attendant and became part owner of the station. India and James had 2 children together: Margaret Gilbert (1933) and son, [Living] (1937).

2) Minnie Bea Guthrie (20 Jul 1908 IL – 29 Jun 2003 TX) m. LeRoy Forrest Rader +children
The youngest daughter of the family was born after they had already settled in Lawrenceville. Minnie Bea Guthrie was born on 20 July 1908. She was 21 at her marriage to LeRoy Rader on 7 June 1930. His parents were residents of Lawrence, but LeRoy lived in Texas. After their marriage in Lawrence, they bade her family and their gathered friends farewell and headed for Texas, but they received notice before their arrival that Minnie’s father, Charles Guthrie, had died. Minnie and LeRoy returned to Lawrence for the funeral. At some point they resumed their journey to Texas to begin their lives as a new couple. Perhaps somewhat ironically, LeRoy was a Funeral Director. They initially lived on South Main Street in Paris, Lamar, Texas. By 1935 they had moved to Gladewater in Gregg County, and eventually to Kilgore. They had a son, Charles (1932) and daughter [Living] (1938).

CHILD 5: GEORGE WASHINGTON GUTHRIE

Born in Perry, Armstrong, Pennsylvania on 5 April 1873, George Washington Guthrie was raised there. He took up work as an oil driller, and moved to West Virginia and then Ohio. It was in Washington County, Ohio that George married Edna L Moellendick. They resided in Rush Creek, Fairfield County, and Janesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. They had 3 daughters: Mabel (1901), Helen Patricia (1907), and Georgianna (1908). They were members of the Forest Avenue Presbyterian Church, and George had been a trustee for several years. He was affiliated with the Blue Lodge of Masons, The Knights Templar, and the Shrine of Columbus. He died on 4 Apr 1941 in Columbus, Ohio, having been hospitalized for an extended illness. His widow Edna died in Janesville on 8 Feb 1962.

Born in West Virginia, Mabel’s parents soon moved to Ohio and were living in Rush Creek, Fairfield County by 1910. She John Adam Sauer about 1925. They resided in Janesville, and then moved to Lakewood in Cuyahoga County. They had two children: Patricia Joanne (1927) and John Adam (1926). During the 1930/40s John was working as a real estate salesman/broker. John and Mabel had been living in Wake Forest, North Carolina for about 10 years when he died on 26 August 1963. He had a history of heart disease and died of a heart attack.

After the family had moved from WV to OH, Helen was born in Woodsfield on 17 March 1906. She was 4 at the time of the 1910 census when they were living in Rush Creek, Fairfield, Ohio. It was in Marietta, OH that she married Glenn Bertram Kassell on 3 March 1928. She was 21 at the time, and the newspaper stated she was a graduate of Senior High School, and had been a student in the Lakewood Nurses Training School for two hears.. Glenn was a son of George William & Ida Florence (Blake) Kassell, and was an employee of the Greiner Dairy company. On 16 Oct 1940, while Glenn was employed at the Ohio Power Company, he completed his WWII Draft Registration. No service record found. The couple had 1 son: George Michael (1940) prior to Helen’s death on 5 August 1961 in Zanesville. She was buried there at Memorial Park Cemetery. Glenn eventually married again, to widow Laura Elaine (Nowell) Lutz, who had 3 daughters. Laura died in 1973. Glenn remarried again in 1974 to Evelyn E Holt, but despite being younger than him by a decade, Evelyn also predeceased him in 1981. There may have been a fourth wife, Lillian. Glenn died on 4 Sep 1986 in Naples, Collier, Florida. His remains were returned to Ohio and he is buried with Helen at Memorial Park Cemetery in Zanesville.

The youngest of three daughters, Georgiana was born in Zanesville on 23 Nov 1908. She was a graduate of Ohio University-Athens and became a school teacher at Lash High School. She was teaching Physical Education at the time of her first marriage to George T Martin on 23 Dec 1924 in Wheeling, WV. They probably divorced. No death record found in the area prior to the 1980s. The 1940 census lists her as a ‘single’ daughter. On 5 Aug 1944, Georgianna married widower Charles Edmond Fulkerson in Janesville. He had a young daughter, [Living] (1932), raised by Georgianna as her own, and they added another, [Living] (1945). The family lived in South Gate, Los Angles County, California where, in 1950, Charles was employed as a mould maker at a Glass Factory. He died in Los Angeles County, CA on 29 Sep 1985. Georgianna was living in Long Beach at the time of her death at age 92 on 11 Oct 2001.

CHILD 6: MINNIE MAY GUTHRIE

One record lists Minnie Mae Guthrie’s birthplace as Petrolia, and the rest as Perry, Armstrong, Pennsylvania. She was the Middle Child of the eleven siblings, and was born on 27 May 1875. The 1880 census of Perry lists her at 5 years of age. Minnie married when she was 19. Her husband was James Merle Simpson, the son of David and Nancy (Herron) Simpson. He was born in Corsica, Pennsylvania on 6 Sep 1866. They married on 19 Nov 1894 and resided in Connellsville, Pittsburgh, and Upper St. Clair over the next half century. James may have spent time in the Navy. His occupation during the 1900 census is illegible. In 1910, he was working as a mail clerk for the Railway, and he was still listed as a Railway Postal Clerk in 1930, when he was 64. Minnie and James were parents of two sons. Minnie died before her husband on 1 Jan 1953. He lived until 23 March 1960. He died at the Fair Rest Home in Applewold, where he had been living for 5 years due to his health.

Dean was born in Connellsville, Fayette, Pennsylvania on 16 Jan 1898. His parents moved the family to Pittsburgh. He was 19 years old and working as a clerk for a steel company when he completed his WWI Draft Card. Dean’s marriage to Martha Brennan took place about 1925. They had 3 sons. Dean worked as a salesman for a Mill Supply company. His death record lists him as a retired executive. Dean died within a few hours after a pulmonary embolism. Martha was 99 at her death on 19 Sep 1999 survived by her sons, 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

2) Robert Chester Simpson (13 Mar 1907 PA – 31 Jan 1991 SC) m. Marjorie Barr +children
Robert was born 13 March 1907. His obituary lists his birthplace as Kittanning. About 1934, he married Marjorie Barr by whom he had 2 daughters. James received a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran, entering as a lieutenant, and served as a flight surgeon in Africa. He continued to serve as a reserve officer and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. His civilian medical career focused on ENT (eyes/ears, nose, and throat) specialization, and Robert practiced in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania until his retirement. He also served as the Elk County coroner for two years. In 1976, Dr and Mrs Simpson settled in Surfside Beach, SC, where they lived until his death on 31 Jan 1991. Marjorie lived until 1997.

CHILD 7: EDWARD J GUTHRIE

Edward J Guthrie was born on 17 Dec 1875 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. The 1880 census in Perry when he was 5 lists his name as Edwin, but that is the only occurrence. The rest of the documents list him as Edward. This man is nowhere to be found in the 1900, 1910, or 1920 census records. He does not appear to be living with his father in California. The first record found for him is a Marriage Announcement posted for: Edward Guthrie, 53, contractor, Lawrenceville, Ill., to Leila Gould, 37, teacher, Lawrenceville. (14 Jun 1928) Next, “Kittanning, June 29–Edward J Guthrie, aged 57 years, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. S. Shakely, 435 Reynolds Ave., Thursday morning at 11:50 o’clock after a brief illness of septicemia. Mr Guthrie and Miss Leila Gould were united in marriage two weeks ago in their home town of Lawrenceville, Illinois, and while on their honeymoon stopped for a short visit with the former’s sister, Mrs. Shakely, this place, where he was taken seriously ill. Deceased is survived by his widow and the following brothers and sisters: William Guthrie, of Waynesburg, Charles and John Guthrie, both of Lawrenceville, Illinois; George Guthrie, of Zanesburg, O.; Mrs A. S. Shakely, of Kittanning; Mrs. J.M. Simpson, of Pittsburgh; Mrs Florence Rhines, of New Kensington; Mrs Lilly English of Reynoldsville. Mr Guthrie’s mother died last year. The remains were taken to Lawrenceville on Friday for burial.” There is no mention of activity during the missing years, nor anything about previous marriages or children. Leila remarried sometime after 1943 to Charles Adam Pavey, a widower with a son and daughter. He died in 1961. Leila died in 1974.

CHILD 8: JOHN WALKER GUTHRIE

John Walker Guthrie was born on 9 Nov 1877 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. In 1900, at 23 years old, he was living Union, Ritchie, WV working as a tool dresser on an oil well. He was back in Pennsylvania to marry Carry Bell Orr on 13 Feb 1906. They moved to Lawrenceville, Illinois where quite a few of John’s family had also settled. Although that was his permanent residence when he completed his WWI Draft Registration Card, he was at the time working for a Texas Oil Driller in Witchita. He brought his family to Texas. They were living in Ranger, Eastland, Texas during the 1920 census. By 1930 they had moved again to Harrison, Perry, Ohio, where he held the same job in a new location. By this time they had 3 children: Isabel Joan (1906), Daniel Gilbert (1909) and Margaret Vernell (1915). They were in Crooksville, Perry County, Ohio when their daughter Margaret died at 16 years of age of tuberculosis on 29 Mar 1932. She was then buried at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. John and Carrie moved to Michigan living in West Branch, Bloomingdale, and Bay City. John died in 1955 and Carrie in 1966. They chose to be buried at Lake Park Cemetery in their daughter’s resting place.

Isabel was born in Illinois on 9 Dec 1906. During her youth, her parents moved every few years for her father’s work as an oil driller. She married John Albert Geiss in 1925 and they resided in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio prior to moving to New York State. He was born in Muncie, Indiana, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Wilson) Geiss. They had 1 daughter: Norma Jean (1926). John died on 11 Dec 1960 in Wellsville, New York after a short illness. He was the construction superintendent of the L.C. Whitford Construction Company. Isabel lived thirty more years dying on 9 April 1990.

Daniel was born in Lawrenceville, Illinois on 8 April 1909. The family was still there during the 1910 census, but his father’s job kept them moving. They were living in Ranger, Eastland, Texas during the 1920 census, when Daniel was 11. He married Hazel Cannon in 1931 in Ohio County, West Virginia. They had 1 son: Gene (1932). Uncertain whether Daniel and Hazel divorced or if she passed away. On 10 Aug 1937, Daniel remarried to Minnie Eudora Hiltz with whom he had 2 sons and 1 daughter. They resided in Saginaw, Michigan.

CHILD 9: MARGARET ‘JOSEPHINE’ GUTHRIE
1879 PA – 1963 PA
Even from the earliest documentation, this daughter was known as Josephine. She lived almost all of her life in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. She was still single and 21 during the 1900 census of Queenstown in which she remained in her parents’ home. She married Albert Smith Shakley on 11 June 1902. He was a son of Daniel Michael and Bridget ‘Biddy’ Jane (White) Shakley (Read Bio) of Perry Township. Albert worked as a driller in the Oil & Gas industry. They purchased a home on Reynolds Avenue where they lived throughout their married life. They had two sons, Edwin Guthrie (1903) and Charles Theodore (1905), who were raised there. Perhaps surprisingly, Josephine was with child again in 1918, but sadly on 16 Feb 1919 another son was delivered stillborn, without specifications of complications or prematurity noted on his record. Albert died on 10 Jan 1947 at 73 years of age. Josephine apparently took up work as a private nurse. In 1950 she was living in East Franklin, which is where Albert had died three years earlier. She may have been in Manorville, West Kittanning, Armstrong, PA, which is where her son Theo’s family was living at the time of her death on 25 July 1963. She was 83 years old. Albert and Josephine are buried at Kittanning Cemetery.

1) Edwin ‘Ed’ Guthrie Shakley (29 Mar 1903 PA – 11 Jan 1993 MO) m. Freda Harris
Like many of the other men in this region, Ed found employment in the Oil & Gas business. His youth was spent in Kittanning, Armstrong, Pennsylvania where he attended school and his father worked as a driller. Ed was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Mines and was Employed by the Shell Oil Company for 32 years as a petroleum geologist. His work took him to Kansas, where he was married 18 Jun 1937 to Freda Harris, and to Texas. In 1940 they were living in Centralia, Marion, Illinois. Next, residents of Houston on 16 Feb 1942 when Ed registered for the WWII Draft. Both Ed and Freda died in 1993. Ed died on 11 Jan and Feda on 8 Feb. They were both buried in Eldon, Miller County, Missouri. The shared stone at their gravesite has reversed their dates of birth listing his DOB on 5 Oct 1903 instead of 29 Mar 1903.

2) Charles Theodore ‘Theo’ Shakley (15 Jan 1905 PA – 23 Mar 1978 FL) m. Mary Mildred Wylie +children
Son Theo also graduated with 4 years of college under his belt, but unlike his brother chose education as his field. He worked as a math teacher in the Manorville Junior High School. He married Mary Mildred Wylie on 17 May 1928. She was a daughter of John Curtis and Louise (Mangold) Wylie. She was a homemaker. They had 2 sons: Albert Wylie (1928) and Charles Theodore (1929), and 3 daughters: Betty Jean (1932), Mary Louise (1933), and Joyce Maire (1939). Only 46, Mary died suddenly on 10 Nov 1953 of a coronary occlusion. She was buried at West Glade Run Presbyterian Cemetery in East Franklin, Armstrong, PA. Theo eventually retired and moved to Florida. He died on 23 Mar 1978 in Saint Petersburg, Pinellas County. His remains were returned for burial at the same cemetery as his wife.

CHILD 11: LILLIAN ‘LILLIE’ MARY GUTHRIE
1882 PA – 1951 PA
Called Lillie, the youngest child of John Steele and Joanna J (Bartley) Guthrie was born on 19 February 1882. at 18 years of age during the 1900 census in Queenstown, Armstrong, PA, she was residing with her family and still attending school. She married Ralph Klair English, known as ‘Mike’ on 14 April 1904 in Jamestown, New York. He was a son of David T. and Estella (Bowen) English. He was a deep well driller and was involved in drilling the first gas wells in the Reynoldsville area. They lived in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania throughout their married life. They had 7 children: Clarence (1904), Nellie Jane (1906), Joanna Estella (1908), Donald David (1910), George E (1913), Kenneth Leroy (1917), and Eliza Louise (1921). Lillie died on 22 January 1951 in Brockway. She suffered from hypertension and had a stroke. Mike died on 15 Nov 1958 in Franklin, Venango County, PA at the home of his daughter, Mrs Nellie Hughes. He had been residing there for a few months due to his failing health. He was buried at the Kahletown Cemetery in Jefferson County.

Born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, Nellie Jane moved with her parents to Reynoldsville by 1910. She married 28 Jul 1927 to Charles ‘Malcolm’ Hughes, the son of Robert and Mabel Grace (Sprague) Hughes. They moved to Cleveland by 1930 where Malcolm worked in the Steel Mill. Their first child was born by then, and one of Malcom’s brothers, Frank, and Nellie’s brothers, George, were living with them at the time. The family was back in Jefferson County, PA by 1935. They had 5 children: Malcolm Eugene (1929), Joye Elise (1931), Patricia Joanne (1932), Herbert (1935), and Nancy (1937). In 1940, Malcolm was a Fire Boss at a Coal Company, and in 1950, a mine foreman and machinist. From 1946 to 1951 Nellie and her husband owned a general store in Dempseytown before selling it in 1955 and moving to New Mexico because of Malcolm’s ill health. Nellie was documented in the 1950 census as a retail store clerk. Malcolm died on 4 Nov 1964 in Las Vegas, San Miguel, New Mexico. The body was returned to Pennsylvania and interred at Graham Cemetery in Franklin, Venango, PA. Nellie was 74 at her death at the Elk Haven Nursing home in St Mary’s where she had lived for 5 years. She was also buried at Graham Cemetery.

3) Joanna Estella English (6 Aug 1908 PA – 10 Feb 1975 CT) m. Patrick O’Donnell +children
This daughter was born in Reynoldsville, Jefferson, PA and lived there until her marriage to Patrick O’Donnell. Their marriage license was noted in The Jeffersonian-Democrat on Thursday, 20 Aug 1925. She was 17 at the time. Patrick worked as a laborer on the State Highway, and later as a miner. The couple had 2 children: Flora Ellen (1928) and Charles Francis (1931), the latter serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Prior to 1950, Joanna and Patrick separated. Joanna and her son were living with Flora’s family in Hartford, Connecticut. Joanna had a job in Housekeeping services at a hospital. Patrick eventually remarried to Edith Jones. He died 20 Feb 1968 in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio. Joanna lived until 10 Feb 1975. She was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut.

4) Donald David English (3 Oct 1910 PA – 11 Sep 1969 CA) m. Lillian Alliene Ridley +children
Born in Reynoldsville, Jefferson, Pennsylvania on 3 October 1910, Donald David English is the eldest surviving son. He was only 17 years old when he married Lillian, who was a daughter of Valentine Bowser and Eveline May (Early) Ridley. They had moved from Pennsylvania to Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan by 1930 where he worked as a shearman at the Steel Mill. They were both now 19 and had a year-old son, Ralph, rented their home on Macomb Street, and did not yet have a radio set. Their family grew until they were parents to 6 boys and 3 girls born between 1929 an 1949. They returned to Armstrong and Venango Counties, Pennsylvania between 1935 and 1950 while Donald worked as a laborer on the WPA Road Project, which was a New Deal Agency that employed millions of American jobseekers to carry out public works projects during the Great Depression. On 27 July 1945, Donald was hired by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Company and employed by them for the next 18 years primarily as a brakeman. Initially, he worked within the Arizona division, and later the Los Angeles Division. Throughout the course of the 18 years, the record shows that there were multiple “force reductions” for periods of a few weeks to a few months, after which he would be rehired or moved to another division within the company. His employment with the Railroad ended on 9 Sep 1963 with the award of an annuity. Donald died on 11 Sep 1969 in Los Angeles, California, and Lillian on 14 Mar 1979. They are buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.

George was musical and played the cornet, a brass instrument similar to a trumpet. At 16, he was living with his sister’s family in Cleveland, Ohio, but neither working nor attending school at the time. On 28 Feb 1933, at the age of 19, he arrived at the American-Canadian border crossing at Windsor, Ontario with a plan to join his employer there. The Canadian Immigration Service noted his information: English, George E., male, 19, single, Last Residence: Reynoldsville, PA, Birthplace: Reynoldsville, PA, Nationality: USA, Race or People: Irish, If in Canada Before: No, What Language: English, Religion: Baptist, Occupation in Own Country: Cornet Player, Occupation Intended in Canada: Cornet Player, Destination: Employer – Louis Fournier – 160 Lyons St. Ottawa, Ont., Nearest Relative in Home Country: Father: Ralph – Reynoldsville, PA; Money in Possession: $7.00, Action Taken: REJECTED. Curious to know why the Canadians would not let him in. George ended up in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan four years later where he married Ruth ‘Marie’ Kentner. They had 5 children. In 1940, George was working in Denver, Colorado at the Cottonwood Night Club at 48th and Tejon St. when he filled out his WWII Draft Card. He enlisted in the US Army on 9 Jan 1947 and received an honorable medical discharge 31 July 1953. After leaving the Army, he attended barber school and became a professional barber, working until his retirement in 1976. George died in Detroit on 2 Sep 1981. He was buried on September 5th at the National Memorial Gardens at Redford. He was 68. His wife Marie died in 1993 and is buried at Detroit Memorial Park West.

Born in Reynoldsville, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, Kenneth Leroy English was the youngest son in the family. He was not living at home during the 1940 census, which was right before his marriage to Mary Grace on 7 Sep 1940. There is a census record for a Kenneth English in Tioga, PA, working as a trucker. Possible that it was him. Kenneth and Mary Grace settled in Etna, Allegheny, PA. The year they married, Kenneth registered for the WWII Draft. At that time he was working for the Natural Alloy Steel Company. The 1950 census checked WWI service rather than WWII. After the war, Kenneth returned to Etna. He was working as a Steward at a Social Club. He died in 1986 and is buried at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Allegheny County, PA. His widow lived until 12 Mar 1998.
