WILLIAM H GUTHRIE
1858IL-1875IL

Edward’s marriage to Sarah Jane Dalson is said to have occurred in Missouri about 1853. This is 5 years prior to the birth of the eldest known son, William H Guthrie in 1858 in Illinois. There are 2 children born to the couple who died young that are not accounted for on census records. One or both of them could have been born during the 5 year gap. William was listed on the 1860 and 1870 censuses with the family. He was born in Illinois, but living in Iowa as they moved there when he was an infant. They returned to Illinois by the 1870 census. William was only 17 upon his death on 8 May 1875. He is buried at Bethel Cemetery in Mercer County, Illinois.

ELIZABETH J GUTHRIE
c1861IL – p1870IL

Daughter Elizabeth J (likely Jane) was born about 1861. The 1870 census indicates that the location was in Illinois, but it might actually have been in Iowa as the family was listed there in 1860. They were in Greene, Mercer, Illinois in 1870, but that is the only family census record upon which Elizabeth shows up. There is only one potential clue found in the 1880 census of Rush, Rooks, Kansas. Living immediately next door to the Edward Guthrie Household is that of Elezander McPherson, W M 24 married farmer OH/OH/OH and his wife Lizzie, W F 21 wife married IL/SCT/OH, and son William, W M 7/12 Sep son IL/OH/IL. This appears to be Elizabeth and her family. The birth locations of Lizzie’s parents are correct. The child’s birth location suggests that Elezander and Lizzie married in Illinois. No further info found.
EDIT: Lizzie’s husband is apparently Alonzo L McPherson. They married 21 Mar 1878 in Mercer County, Illinois. She was born on 9 Dec 1860 and died in Hopkins, Nodaway, Missouri on 24 Sep 1880 at age 19 yrs 9 months and 15 days. She is buried at Hopkins Cemetery. (Source: Find-a-Grave Memorial 160266680)

EDWARD HUGH GUTHRIE

Edward Hugh Guthrie was born in Aledo, Mercer, Illinois on 6 July 1862. He is listed as Edward H in the 1870 census of Greene, Mercer, Illinois, but in later records simply as Hugh. He married Rosa Ellen Babcock in Lincoln County, OK on 1 Jan 1893 and they settled in Woods County, Oklahoma where they remained until his death on 12 May 1917. He was a farmer. They had one son: Leo B Guthrie. Hugh is buried as E H Guthrie in Freedom Cemetery, Freedom, Woods County, OK.

MARTHA ‘MATTIE’ A B GUTHRIE
1866IL – 1919OK

Mattie was born 13 April 1866 on a farm near Viola, Illinois and was “next to the youngest of seven children”. She married James W Hixon on 25 Nov 1884. They moved from Kansas to Oklahoma and produced a family of eleven children, 6 boys and five girls. She died of a stroke at the age of 53 on 14 November 1919 and is buried at Newark Cemetery.

JAMES EARNEST GUTHRIE
1868IL – 1942KS

James was born on 14 September 1868 in Illinois. Trees list the specific location as Toledo, Cumberland, Illinois. He was enumerated in the 1870 census of Greene, Mercer, Illinois, and in Rush, Rooks, Kansas in 1880. James married at 22 years of age to Sarah Frances Martin on 5 March 1891 in Wilson, Kansas. They had 2 daughters. In 1900 they were living in the Creek Nation and by 1910 in Penn, Woods, Oklahoma. James was a farmer operating one of the largest farms in the area., but by 1930 had taken on the roll of manager and employer at a Filling Station, a business known as the Service Oil & Gas Company. James died on 24 May 1942 in Halstead, Kansas.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

1832: BIRTH of EDWARD GUTHRIE
According to every record we have the location of Edward Guthrie’s birth was in Scotland, and despite knowing the names of some of his siblings, we have still been unable to identify his parents. There is some indication in the records of his brother William Guthrie that the birth location might actually have been Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland and that the family simply reported Scotland as their collective place of origin.

Susanna Guthrie, female, 20, born Ireland
William Guthrie, male, 20, Laborer, born Ireland

Martha Brewster, female, 50, born Ireland
Thomas Neilson, male, 35, Laborer, born Ireland
Thomas Gordan, male, 15, Tin Smith, born n
Neighboring Households: Gallaway, Yancy, McNeil
Notes: No relationships are listed. Andrew married Susanna Thompson in 1840. William did not marry Gennie Totten until 1842. Martha Tipping/Thompson is living near or with Andrew and Susanna after their move to Canada during the 1851 and 1861 censuses. The name ‘Martha Brewster’ is used for one of Andrew and Susanna’s daughters. Martha Brewster is old enough to be the mother of the 4 brothers, but she could easily be another relation. In 1841, brothers Samuel Guthrie and Edward Guthrie would be 11 and 9 years of age respectively. Where are they? Not found in the census records for Scotland. I get the feeling that they’re still in Ireland at this point.

1849: CANADIAN IMMIGRATION of BROTHER – ANDREW GUTHRIE & FAMILY
Andrew & Susannah (Thompson) Guthrie and family arrived in Canada in 1849.

1850: AMERICAN IMMIGRATION of BROTHER – SAMUEL GUTHRIE
Samuel was listed in the 1850 census of Pequannock, Morris, New Jersey where he worked as a laborer in the Sooter household. It appears that Samuel returned to Scotland for his marriage to Catherine Stevenson in 1852.

1851: CANADIAN IMMIGRATION of BROTHER – WILLIAM GUTHRIE & FAMILY
William’s family does not appear in the 1851 census of Scotland or Canada. Family lore states that William went first and the family followed in 1853.

Abt. 1853: MARRIAGE of EDWARD GUTHRIE & SARAH JANE DALSON
Online trees list Edward and Sarah Jane’s marriage as occurring in St. Louis, Missouri, but I have my doubts that it occurred there or in the year 1853. This is about 5 years before the birth of their first known child, William in 1858. Sarah Jane was also born in Ohio, not Missouri. We have no indication that Edward was in Missouri. If anyone finds anything to correct or explain the marriage date and location please let me know.

Bef.1858: AMERICAN IMMIGRATION of EDWARD GUTHRIE
There are a lot of things we don’t know about Edward’s arrival in America. Did he come straight from Scotland or Ireland to the USA or did he arrive by way of Canada? There is one Canadan immigration of an Edward Guthrie from Ontario noted in the records, but it is not until 1871, many years past the time this man was already established in Mercer County, Illinois. According to the birthdate estimates listed for his children on census records, Edward was already in Illinois by 1858.

1860: US FEDERAL CENSUS of IOWA

Sarah J Guthrie 22 F, Birthplace: Ohio
William Guthrie 1 M, Birthplace: Illinois

There is no relationship given for the household members. Sarah Herron could be Sarah J’s mother or simply a boarder.

1860-1864: BROTHER – SAMUEL GUTHRIE and FAMILY MOVE to MERCER COUNTY, ILLINOIS.
They were living in Mercer County, IL prior to the 1865 Agricultural Schedule.

1880: MOVED to HOPKINS, NODAWAY, MISSOURI
According to daughter Mattie’s obituary, the family reportedly moved from Kansas to Hopkins County, Missouri and remained there for a period of 2 years. There is no such Missouri county by the name Hopkins. (Hickory, Harrison, Henry, Holt, Howard, and Howell, but no Hopkins.) Sons Edward Hugh Guthrie and James Earnest Guthrie’s obituaries also indicates they had Moved to Missouri in 1880. There is a Hopkins (Township/City) in Nodaway County, Missouri. After reviewing some entries at Find-a-Grave, this looks to be the place. Now we know where daughter Lizzie ended up.

1880: DEATH of DAUGHTER – ELIZABETH J ‘LIZZIE’ (GUTHRIE) MCPHERSON

Find-a-Grave shows the memorial page for Lizzie J Guthrie who married Alonzo L McPherson in Mercer County, Illinois on 21 Mar 1878. She died in Hopkins on 24 Sep 1880 at 19 years 9 months and 5 days.

Abt. 1881: MOVED to OREGON
After some time in Missouri, the family went to Oregon, but returned the same year to Kansas.

Abt. 1882: MOVED to KANSAS
Either to Wilson County, Kansas (Obits of sons Edward Hugh and James Earnest) or Thayer, Nyeosho, Kansas (Obit of daughter Mattie). Considering that Mattie was married in Wilson County, Kansas that is likely the correct location.
