NOTES:

Robert Guthrie was the youngest son of Robert Guthrie and Esther Giles. He was born about 1770 being listed as 6 years of age during the 1766 Provincial Census of Elizabeth Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland. His father was in Frederick County as early as 29 June 1869 when he and his brother John witnessed the will of Elizabeth Skiles, so it is very likely that Robert was born in the county.

The family moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia about 1785 when his father “Robert Gutherie” is listed in the Personal Property Taxes for the county with 1 tithe, 2 horses, 2 cattle.

The next time Robert is mentioned in known documents is in the last will and testament of his father written on 28 Feb 1788 in Rockbridge County Virginia. After making bequests to his wife, eldest son, and daughters, Robert Sr left the “residue” of his lands to his youngest sons, Richard and Robert Guthrie.

On 5 April 1794, Robert, Richard, and Richard’s wife Elizabeth, sold their share of land to James Robertson. After the sale, brother Richard Guthrie and his family moved to Montgomery County, Virginia. Robert’s oldest brother, John Guthrie, was still living in Rockbridge County, Virginia at least through 1805 when he still appears on the local Personal Property Tax list. That is the first year a Robert Guthrie shows up as “1 white male over 16”, but by that time John had a son named Robert who may been that person.

There is no definitive proof that Robert Guthrie Jr remained in Rockbridge County, Virginia after the sale of his shares of land to James Robertson in 1794.

The Robert Guthrie who married Frances Fowler and settled in Kanawha County, VA was born about 1778 almost a decade after Robert Jr’s documented birth. His line does possess GFG3A YDNA, but we believe that he was the son of Robert Sr’s brother, John. He does not seem like quite the right fit.

Where did Robert Guthrie Jr disappear to after 1794? Did he also go to Montgomery County, like his brother Richard? If so, the answers may be revealed in local deeds and property tax records. He does not show up in the marriage register. There is also no obvious evidence of the time or place of his death. We need some clues.
