The earliest couple associated with this Guthrie Family Group (GFG8) is Thomas Guthrie and Mary Cason assigned to GFG8-Branch A. This Thomas Guthrie was born about 1720-30 and died in Halifax County, VA in September 1787. Known children were born in the 1750s-60s. During the 1770s and 1780s they were living in Halifax County, Virginia, which is a common residence for other genetic groups. YDNA matches with men of the Vaughan and Carter surnames suggest one or more ‘genetic events’ within GFG8, but it is still uncertain whether Thomas Guthrie was the original Guthrie affected by such an event, or if there is a more extended group on this side of the Atlantic. This Thomas Guthrie did leave a will naming his wife, son Cason, and daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Francis, so it would seem that there might not be another son to be the progenitor of Carter’s line, but the 1782 and 1786 Halifax Tax Lists do show a 7th white person living within the household.

If Thomas Guthrie of GFG8-Branch A was indeed the progenitor of the family originating from a genetic event, then he is probably the grandfather of the Lincoln County, NC branches now identified as GFG8. Carter Guthrie is not the first of the group with Lincoln County, NC connections. The Nelson Guthrie & Catherine Lowe family of GFG8-Branch B lived there between 1806 and 1840, indicating that most or all of their children were born there. This does not prove they were brothers, but it does prove shared common direct paternal line ancestry. That shared ancestor might have been a father, grandfather or great-grand-father.

Lincoln County, NC was formed after the Revolutionary War in 1779 with the division of Tryon County, NC into Lincoln and Rutherford. The Tryon County name was abolished. Its formation had come in 1768 from Meckelnburg County, North Carolina. These counties are appropriate research venues for Carter Guthrie, born 1771-1780, and his parents.

The earliest documented Guthrie in Tryon County, North Carolina was Francis Guthrie, a planter, who received a 1769 land patent on the South Side of Allison’s Greek containing 132 acres. He and his wife, Frances, sold the property and later claimed 150 acres in Lincoln, NC on the SW side of the waters of Little Creek and the waters of Buffalo Creek. He was probably at least 21 years of age in 1769. He is listed with an estimated birth range of 1739-1749. He is the only Guthrie (or variant spelling) listed in Lincoln, NC in the 1790 census.

Another early contender for placement as Carter Guthrie’s father is Thomas Guthrie, who is listed in the 1800 and 1810 censuses of Lincoln, NC in the 45 and over category. He was born prior to 1755.

The 1800 census for Lincoln, NC complicates matters because it lists two Carter Guthrie households. One man (26-44) is listed next to the household of Thomas Vaughn and near a couple of Abernathy households. The latter is the surname of the bondsman on Carter Guthrie and Barbara Beal’s marriage record. The former, Vaughn, is a common surname match in YDNA results of GFG8 men, suggesting a potential relationship whether known or unknown. (IMG 43 of 101). The other Carter Guthrie listing is found on an alphabetical census page (IMG 47 of 101) where James Guthrie (16-25), Carter Guthrie (16-25), and Thomas Guthrie (45+) households are all listed on the same page. Note that the Francis Guthrie household is found separately on IMG 81 of 101.

Interestingly, there do not appear to be any Land Purchases or Sales by Carter Guthrie in North Carolina. This potentially indicates that he was living and working on the property of his father, as there is also no document found about leasing land.

One bonus discovery is the potential placement of GFG8-Branch C: Thomas Guthrie (1800NC-c1854TN) and Mary Russell. The 1850 census indicates Thomas was born in North Carolina. According to census data for Carter Guthrie and Barbara Beal, their unidentified eldest son was born about 1801-1810. Could that son be Thomas? The 1830 census of Warren County, Tennessee includes the households of both Carter & Barbara (Beal) Guthrie and Thomas & Mary (Russell) Guthrie.

1771-1780: BIRTH of CARTER GUTHRIE
The 1850 census lists Carter Guthrie at 80 years of age. In 1840, his age range is listed as 60-69 (born 1771-1780). In 1830, he is listed as 50-59 (born 1771-1780). In 1800 and 1810, he is in the 26-44 category.

The location of his birth listed in that 1850 census is North Carolina. He was married in Lincoln, NC in 1800, a county that did not yet exist at the time of his birth. If was born in the same area, it would have been Tryon County, NC at that time.

Some family researchers identify Carter Guthrie’s father as a Thomas Gutherie also living in Lincoln, NC during the 1800 census: 1M and 1F 45 and over, 1F 16-25, 2M 10-15, 1 Slave. The census is listed in alphabetical order rather than by neighbors, so Thomas and Carter are listed next to one another. A James Guthrie household is on the same page.

Married the year before Carter Guthrie in Lincoln, NC was Nelson Guttery (Guthrie) and Catherine Lowe on 1 Apr 1799. Carter Guthrie was their bondsman, which suggests a close family tie. Brothers? The YDNA of both Carter Guthrie and Nelson Guthrie descendants match the GFG8 genetic profile.

1780: BIRTH of BARBARA BEAL

The identity of Carter Guthrie’s wife is still a bit of a mystery as family trees list a variety of potential Beal/Beall parents and also list her with a combination of given names.

North Carolina Marriage Bonds list Carter Guthrie’s wife as “Barbara Beal”. They were married in Lincoln County, NC on 15 Aug 1800, and continued to live in that county at least through the 1810 census.

Since they married during a census year, it is likely that Barbara Beal’s parents were also residents of Lincoln County, NC in 1800.
John Beal: 1M and 1F 45 and over, 1M 26-44, 1F under 10 (Barbara is not listed in his will.)
Wm Beal: 1M and 1F 26-44, 1F under 10
Jno Bell: 1M and 1F 45 and over, 1M and 2F 16-25
Thomas Bell: 1M over 45, 2M and 1F 16-25, 2M 10-15

Carter Guthrie and his wife were already listed in their own household during the census:
1M 26-44 and 1F 16-25. Unfortunately, they are not listed on the same page as any Beal/Bell household, but any of the above could potentially be Barbara Beal’s parent household.

Online trees listing parents for Barbara Beal include Thomas B Beall Sr and Ann Norris, however, this couple resided in Chatham County, NC in 1790 and continued to live there through Thomas Beall’s death in or about 1820. North Carolina Wills and Probate Records includes an Estate File and Will, which does not include a daughter named Barbara Beal/Guthrie. However, Thomas appoints as one of his executors his ‘beloved friend’ William Guthrew (presumably Guthrie). The file also includes a typed transcription of the will. This may be the reason why Barbara is mistakenly assigned to that family. William Guthrie is not associated with the Carter Guthrie family. William Guthrie of Chatham County, NC is the son of William Guthrie and Mary Magdalene Roarke of GFG1A. Not the same family. Different counties in NC.

Then there is the issue of her name. The only official record identifying Carter Guthrie’s wife names her as “Barbara Beal”. She is presumed to be the only wife associated with Carter’s children. The census records list her age range as: 16-25 in 1800 (1775-1784), 16-25 in 1810 (1785-1794), (not found in 1820), 40-49 in 1830 (1781 – 1790), and 50-59 in 1840 (1781-1790). These records suggest that Barbara was born on the cusp of the 1784/85 range, but definitely between 1784-1790.

The 1850 census of Madison County, Arkansas does not list anyone by the name Barbara Guthrie. We find Carter Guthrie listed alone in his own household, age 80, m, no occupation, real estate value 50, born NC.
Living next door to him is his son William Guthrie, 26, m, laborer, born TN; Martha Guthrie, 19, f, born TN; Samson Guthrie, 3, m, born AR, and a woman named Amey Guthrie, 70, f, NC.

There seems to be an assumption by family historians that Carter’s wife, Barbara Beal, is the same person as Amey Guthrie despite the difference of name and age. Amey’s age places her estimated DOB as about 1780, which makes her older than Barbara in nearly all of the censuses listed above. Unfortunately, the 1850 census does not include relationships. This woman could potentially be Carter’s sister or relative rather than his wife. Yet there are numerous trees with variations of the consolidated names “Amey Barbara” and “Barbara Amey” without any supporting evidence that they are the same woman.

1779: FORMATION of LINCOLN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

“Lincoln County, located in North Carolina’s Piedmont region, was formed in 1779 from Tryon County, which was subsequently eliminated in an effort to erase the memory of oppressive royal governor William Tryon.” Digital Repository: NCPedia. Article by Robert Blair Vocci, 2006.

THE LINCOLN COUNTY HISTORICAL GAZETTEER: “Prior to 1763, the area that is now Lincoln County was part of the large undefined western wilderness portion of ANSON COUNTY. That year MECKLENBURG COUNTY was formed from ANSON and then, in 1768, the western portion of MECKLENBURG was partitioned off as TRYON COUNTY.

1790: US FEDERAL CENSUS of LINCOLN, NORTH CAROLINA
Since Carter Guthrie married in Lincoln County, NC in 1800 and continued to live there for at least 10 years, it is possible that he was living there during the 1790 census. However, Lincoln County, NC lists only one household in 1790 with any variation of the name Guthrie: Frank Guttery – 1 Male 16 or over, 0 Male under 16, 1 Female. There are no other male Guthries living in that household. If Carter Guthrie is living in the county in 1790 it is within another household.

1800: US FEDERAL CENSUS of LINCOLN, NORTH CAROLINA
Six Guthrie households are listed for the County in 1800. Two of those are headed by men named Carter Guthrie.
