Benjamin F Guthrie’s father James died about 1845. During the 1850 census, his widowed maternal grandmother, Hannah (Paretree) Guthrie is living with her daughter Caroline Guthrie and family. At the age of 15, Benjamin is the oldest male in the household. He attended school that year.

Ten years later, the Guthrie household is down to 4 members: Caroline 50, Canelum 20, Charity 17, and Christopher 13.
