ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG8A – BRANCH C

Since Thomas’s direct Guthrie descendant possesses the Y-DNA profile for GFG8A, there is a good chance that his line originates with Thomas Guthrie & Mary Cason (GFG8A – Branch A), or from a closely related collateral line.

According to the 1850 census, Thomas Guthrie was born in North Carolina, which was home to GFG8A’s Branch B Nelson Guthrie & Catherine Lowe, and the theorized extended families in the Lincoln County, NC region. One of those families was headed by Carter Guthrie, a potential brother to Nelson. Carter Guthrie is also found living in Warren County, TN in 1830, a location where Thomas Guthrie is known to have lived during the mid to late 1830s.

I don’t have much family background information on this Thomas Guthrie. If he is the man listed in the 1840 Warren County, TN Census, it would indicate that he had a wife and family prior to his marriage to Mary Russell in 1847. The first wife’s identity is unknown. One daughter, and one of the three sons have presumably been identified.

UNIDENTIFIED GUTHRIE (SON)

This boy is enumerated within Thomas Guthrie’s household during the 1840 census and is inferred to be his son. He was born between 1821-1825. No further data found.

ELIZABETH J GUTHRIE
1828TN-1862TX

Elizabeth J Guthrie was born about 1828 in Van Buren County, TN. I have no specific document linking her to parent Thomas Guthrie. However, she was married in Van Buren County, TN, and meets the age criteria for the female child in his household during the 1840 census.

Elizabeth married James Monroe Fleming on 15 August 1844. They had 5 children. This couple moved to Anderson, Texas, where they, their children, and Elizabeth’s brother Anderson were enumerated in 1850. They moved back to Tennessee and were in Rutherford in 1860, and then returned to Texas 1-2 years later settling in Pecos County, TX where Elizabeth died in January of 1862. She is buried at Fort Stockton.

Alexander Guthrie was born in Tennessee a bout 1834. He was enumerated in the household of his parents in 1840. His mother died between the time of his birth and 1847 when his father, Thomas Guthrie remarried. When his older sister, Elizabeth (Guthrie) Fleming and family moved to Texas, so did Alexander. When they returned to Tennessee, Alexander apparently stayed in Texas.

He married Exonia E Hunter about 1853. They ran a boarding house in Gainesville, Cooke County, Texas. No children. I found no obituary for him in Texas papers, but the following was posted in the St. Louis Republic on 22 August 1902 in St Louis Missouri: A. C. Guthrie. Republic Special. Gainesville, Tex., Aug 21– A. C. Guthrie, an old citizen of this city, died last night after an illness of several months.

There are a number of probate documents found for him at Family Search that include reports from a lawsuit.

Findings:

Our Y-DNA Participant for Kit 688761 is a genetic match for GFG8A, which indicates the original paternal source is likely a man of the Vaughan surname from the 1600s-early 1700s.

This is a Y-67 marker test matching Group Mode DNA 65/67. There are 2 variances compared to the most common value found for the group at any given genetic marker.

DYS641 = 11 versus Group Mode = 10. Value is unique to this kit.
DYS444 = 13 versus Group Mode = 12. Also found in Kit B227026, whose surname is McCarter. No known Guthrie or Vaughan connection. Ancestor lived in Christian County, Kentucky.
