NOTES:
The discovery of John Guthrie as a ‘Forgotten Son‘ of Francis Guthrie Sr of Coleraine Twp., Lancaster, PA, opens up a trail of connected Guthrie family lineages as he forges a pioneering trail from Pennsylvania to Maryland to Virginia and what is now West Virginia. James Guthrie’s origins had previously been connected to a different origin story for which no supporting evidence has been found. Y-DNA matches to the GFG3A genetic profile do currently support the documentation trail for the Francis Guthrie Sr line of descent.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
1775: BIRTH of JAMES GUTHRIE
It is important to understand that the information on James Guthrie’s birth origins comes from 3 different sources with conflicting data. Census records tell us that James Guthrie was born 1766-1784 narrowed to about 1775. The 1850 census lists his birth location as Maryland.
Hardesty’s History of West Virginia states that 3 Guthrie brothers came from Ireland. Note that it does not indicate their birth was in Ireland, just the they arrived in America from that location. There is no original source data to prove that immigration came from Ireland/Northern Ireland.
A brief sketch of the Guthrie family in a book on Sissonville history, James’ parents are revealed as Andrew Guthrie and Mary Robinson (actually Robertson), but the book does not list its sources. If accurate, this couple had their son James Guthrie baptized on 9 July 1775 in Arbirlot, Angus, Scotland.
If James is instead the son of John Guthrie, per the other origin theory, the family may have lived in Maryland prior to moving to Virginia. There are 2 potential men within the known GFG3A families who might be identified as John Guthrie. One is John, son of Robert Guthrie & Esther Giles. The other is John Guthrie, son of William Guthrie & Ann Hunter. Research required.

ABOUT 1800: MARRIAGE of JAMES GUTHRIE & ELIZABETH CASDORPH
The marriage document for James & Elizabeth is the source of information and/or disinformation. The marriage year is incomplete, but the entry is grouped with the minister’s entries for the years 1801-1803.
James’ full name is in question. The name James G Guthrie and/or James Gullery Guthrie is frequently found in trees across the internet. I submit that the original includes a mistake with a correction. He appears to be listed as James Gullory (Guthrie), with the Guthrie surname squeezed in in parentheses, therefore he is actually James Guthrie. Also, note that ‘Gullory’ is actually ‘Guttory’. The cross for the two Ts is just above.
His wife Elizabeth also appears to be a potential source of an original error. Her name is listed as Elizabeth Castor instead of Casdorph, which seems to be a phonetic mispelling.

Note: Since this is the year his son Henson married, it could be that Henson was purchasing items from his father at a cheaper cost, or as a way to ensure his inheritance of same.
1826: MARRIAGE of JAMES GUTHRIE & JUDITH HENSLEY HENDERSON
Kanawha County, Virginia, USA on 11 July 1826
Judith Hensley was first married to John Henderson in Amherst County, Virginia on 18 Feb 1805. Census records list her as either 16-25 (born 1785-1794) or 26-44 (born 1766-1784) in 1810, 1820 as 26-44 (1776-1794), 1830 40-49 (1781-1790). This narrows her birth range to 1785-1790. No children have been positively identified for the couple.
John Henderson apparently died between 1820-1826. His widow remarried to James Guthrie in Kanawha County, Virginia on 11 July 1826.
1827: MARRIAGE of DAUGHTER – MARY ‘POLLY’ GUTHRIE
Kanawha County, Virginia, USA on 15 February 1827
Polly married John Selman. They were parents to Thomas Selman (1827), James Preston Selman (1832), Roxanne Selman (1835), Julia Selman (1838) and Jarrett Selman (1840). It is presumed that Polly died between 1840 and 1850. She is not listed with the family in the 1850 or 1860 census.
1830: US CENSUS of VIRGINIA
Kanawha County, Virginia, USA
There are 2 entries in the 1830 census that might fit the households of James Guthrie and Henson Guthrie. However, the names listed are Jane Gurtris and Henry Gurthur.

ABOUT 1846: DEATH of WIFE – JUDITH (HENSLEY) GUTHRIE
Kanawha County, Virginia, USA
Judith apparently died about 1846 when James Guthrie drafted an Article of Agreement with William Hensley about the disposition of a slave named Lucinda. Her death was definitely prior to the 1850 census.
1846: ARTICLE of AGREEMENT – JAMES GUTHRIE & WILLIAM HENSLEY
Kanawha County, Virginia, USA on 7 December 1846
Whereas Judy Guthrie in her life owned a negro girl named Lucinda and was in possession of said girl before her marriage to James Guthrie and before her death she gave said girl to William Hansley. James acknowledges the validity of William’s title to the girl and is with this agreement borrowing said girl until said James Guthrie’s death. Signed by William Hensley and James Guthrie, and witnessed by James Guthrie Jr. Dated 7 December 1846.
Deed Book P, p.56.
LDS Film 008211431 image 35 of 715.
Looking at this article of agreement through from our modern perspective can be disconcerting as two men settle the disposition of a young slave girl. William Hensley was James Guthrie’s daughter Sarah’s husband. This may be a situation where Judy inherited Lucinda, a slave, or the mother of the slave Lucinda, from her Hensley relatives, likely her father. The ownership of the slave may have been documented to be hers during the course of her lifetime, with continued ownership reverting to the original family heirs. William Hensley may have been the designated heir. The agreement does include an acknowledgement that William has a right to the girl, but only to the right of borrowing her until the time of James Guthrie’s death.

1850: DEATH of JAMES GUTHRIE
Kanawha County, Virginia, USA on 18 June 1850
James Guthrie does not appear to leave an estate upon his death, nor is an administrator assigned to any estate upon his death. A review of various property records shows that James sold his possessions and property to his children and their spouses in amounts ranging from $1 to $200. The distribution of the 8 slaves he owned in 1849 is uncertain as no definitive method of selling, bequeathing, or freeing them has been found. See LDS film #008151976 image 57 of 215.
1851: MARRIAGE of SON – JAMES GUTHRIE
Kanawha County, Virginia, USA in July of 1851

James Guthrie married Elizabeth Ann Dawson in 1857. They were parents to 3 children: Laurida (1858), William McClellan (1862), and Emma Stacia (1867)

FALSE ORIGINS:
According to ‘Sissonville: A Time to Remember‘ which includes into on the Guthrie family, James Guthrie‘s parents are Andrew Guthrie & Mary Robinson of Arbilot, Angus, Scotland. There is no source data attached to the bio. Others list his wife’s maiden name as Robertson. A search of the Old Parish Records of Scotland reveals Andrew Guthrie b.1740 Carmyllie, Angus, Scotland married to Mary Robertson on 12 Jan 1765 in Arbirlot, Angus, Scotland. They had 2 sons: Alexander (1772) and James (1775) and several daughters: Jean (1765), Margaret (1770), Mary Polly (1779) and Elizabeth (1783) documented in the OPR. Note that there is no evidence of Andrew Guthrie’s presence in America, nor any known documentation linking this James Guthrie to their son.
