ORIGIN THEORIES for GFG11 – BRANCH A

George Guthery was born somewhere in Virginia about 1769. I have found no documentation linking George to any specific location or family in VA. His wife Mary Young is frequently listed in trees as Sarah Young or Mary Sarah Young, but there seems to be no original source material for the name Sarah. Personally, I think it is an error that has been perpetuated from one tree to another.

This couple probably married in Virginia. Their marriage date of 29 Nov 1794, and other vital dates for their family are recorded in the family bible.

The use of the Guthery spelling could be a potential clue as there are groups that have continued to use that variation. Participants within the group use the Guthery, Guthery, and Guthrie spellings.

The primary Y-DNA matches for Guthrie Family Group 11 are to men of the Ballew/Ballou surname. This indicates a shared ancestor between all GFG11 descendants who was likely a man of that name, either by adoption of a Ballew child into the Guthrie family, or due to false paternity. George Guthery is currently the earliest identified Guthery with this genetic profile. This could indicate that all other GFG11 lineages descend from him.

George and Mary Guthrie are credited with 16 children based on their bible records. They moved to Tennessee early on in their marriage as only a few of the children seem to be associated with Virginia birthplace listings in the censuses. The remainder of the children were born in Tennessee. They moved to Indiana during the early 1830s.

Betsy Guthery was born in Virginia on 29 September 1795, the eldest child of George and Mary (Young) Guthery. She married Austin Choate in TN on 29 May 1817. They had 1 son: George Choate born on 30 April 1821 in TN. Betsy died the following year on 9 June 1822. Her husband remarried to Elizabeth / Mary Elizabeth Young with whom he had 3 sons and 4 daughters. He died sometime after the 1880 census, probably in Fentress County, TN.

JOHN GUTHERY

John Guthery was the eldest son of the family. He was born on 12 January 1797 in Virginia. He married Sarah Cartwright on 6 March 1821, probably in Tennessee. They had removed to Indiana by 1837 when their daughter’s birth is listed in that location. I am unable to determine exact residence prior to 1850 when the family is living in Eel River, Greene, Indiana. John and Sarah had at least 5 children. He died in Sullivan County, Indiana on 7 April 1871. Sarah’s DOD is listed in trees as 1871, but that could actually be ‘after 1871’. No further data found.

William’s birth date is documented in the family bible as 22 April 1798, but nothing further is known about him at this time.

NANCY GUTHERY
1799 – Unknown

Nancy’s birth is documented in the family bible as 28 April 1799. It also lists her marriage date to David Maybury/Mayberry on 9 August 1821. They moved to Cane Hill, Washington, Arkansas during the 1830s raising their family there. David died in 1877 and Nancy in 1884. They are both buried at Prairie Grove Cemetery, in Prairie Grove, Washington, Arkansas.

The Find-a-Grave site and some online trees list Nancy with the maiden name of Stroud instead of Guthery, and her DOB as 14 April 1799 rather than 28 April 1799. No evidence of a Stroud connection found.

The family bible lists Susan’s birth as 24 November 1800, and her marriage to Consider Carpenter (aka ‘Sid’) as 8 November 1821. They made their home in Fentress County, Tennessee. After Sid’s death in 1869, Susan is found in Morgan County through her 70s and 80s. She died on 22 February 1892 at Glenmary, Scott, Tennessee.

The family bible lists this daughter as ‘Jenny’ upon her birth on 3 August 1804. It also lists her as ‘Jean’ upon her marriage to Israel Mullinix on 27 February 1824. The 1850 census lists her as ‘Jane’. The names Jean and Jane are often interchangeable based more on pronunciation than a set spelling.

Jenny’s husband was Israel Hagan Mullinex. They lived in Fentress County, TN before settling permanently in Daviess County, Missouri. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters. Online trees lists their DOD as 1858. No details.

Rhoda’s birth on 24 Jan 1806 and her marriage to John Marshall on 22 Jul 1823 are recorded in the family bible. The 1823 date is smudged.

John Campbell Marshall was born on 5 August 1801 in Washington, VA, the son of Samuel & Rachel (Campbell) Marshall, according to online family trees. John and Rhoda lived in Washington, Brown County, Indiana. The number of children varies in online trees, but they appear to be adding the children of their eldest son, George W Guthrie, to the list. These children are listed with John & Rhoda on some census records.

GEORGE L GUTHERY

George was born on 25 August 1807 according to the family bible. He married ‘Polly Ann’ on 5 April 1827.

His obituary tells his story:
Rev. George L. GUTHERY died at his home at Newberry, Ind., Jan 1, 1890. He was born in the state of Tennessee in 1807; emigrated to this state with his father in 1833. He was a citizen of Greene county for several years. He was joined in holy wedlock with Miss Mary Ann PABE in 1828, with whom he lived in peace and harmony for many years, until she was called by her heavenly Father to leave him. He was the father of five children, one only of whom is living to mourn his loss. He attached himself to the Methodist Episcopal church in the year 1838, and was ordained a minister of the gospel of that church in 1847 and has been a minister for forty-two years. But not less was he faithful in all of his duties, both private and public. As a citizen he was respected and honored by all who knew him. As a church member and minister he was loved by all. Father Guthery was patient, energetic and faithful in all things whatsoever he engaged in, whether in the discharge of his duties as a christian, neighbor or minister. As a friend to Christianity he had but few equals. He lived for the good of others and dedicated the latter part of his life to that cause. His whole desire was the prosperity of the church, and his sympathies did no linger around his own particular branch alone; they reached out to all denominations, and desired to see their good works harmonize with his own, and to know that all were working for the general good of mankind. His great aim was to assist his fellow men to raise themselves in the scale of humanity.

Father Guthery was a devoted friend toward the temporal welfare of the church. Day after day he went to his work and returned from it on the new church building for several months. His whole desire was to see the building so nearly completed that his funeral services could be held in it, for he said: His life was short, but no one thought of it being so short. It was the desire of all that he might live to see the building upon which he had labored so faithfully, finished, and enjoy many seasons of refreshing with his brethren, and witness the prosperity of his congregation again. He leaves behind him to mourn his loss one daughter, Mrs. FULLER , of Smith township, Greene county, Ind; one brother T. C. Guthery, of Newberry, Ind., many other relatives and a large circle of friends and acquaintances. No one entertained the least doubt of Father Guthery’s integrity and true devotion to Christianity, for he was always kind and affectionate toward all and served God in the beauty of holiness he loved to do his bidding.

On Thursday, Jan. 2, 1890 his funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church, Rev WOOD, of Odon, officiating, after which the remains were conveyed to the Bogard Cemetery across the river, and there, in the presence of a large concourse of friends, they were committed to the dust from which they sprang. His soul, which had already taken its flight to the realms of glory, was borne on angel’s wings to the God who gave it, where it will ever be with the Lord. Father Guthery has built his own monument which consists of his christian character.

SARAH ‘SALLY’ GUTHERY

Sally was born on 20 January 1810 in Tennessee. She was married three times. Her first husband was John W Carpenter whom she married on 25 December 1828 in TN. They had 4 daughters. He died about 1838. Sally was then married to George W Esplinger on 16 August 1838. They had 1 son together before his death in 1840. At the age of 51 she married widower Absalom ‘Abner’ Bogard. He died in 1873. She survived him by 5 years living until 19 November 1878. She is buried at Bogard Cemetery in Newberry, Greene, Indiana.

Young was born in 19 July 1812. He was a farmer. Young married his first wife, Pernina Emaline Mullinex, about 1829 in Tennessee. They had 6 sons and 3 daughters. They moved to Daviess County, Missouri by 1850. Pernina died in 1852, and he remarried about 2 years lager to Sarah (MNU). They moved to Scott County, Arkansas by 1860. They had 1 son and 2 daughters. Sarah died sometime before 1862 when the estimated date for his 3rd marriage to widow Nancy Jane (Trent) Fisher occurred. Young and Nancy had 1 son and 2 daughters. Young Guthery died in Virgil Greenwood, Kansas on 9 April 1867 at the age of 54.

Tim was born on 2 January 1819 in Tennessee. He was twice married. Martha A Barker was his first wife. They married on 15 August 1838 in Greene County, Indiana and were parents to 2 daughters and 2 sons. Martha presumably died about 1850-1856. Tim remarried about 1857 to Percilla Osborn Black. They had 3 sons and 4 daughters. They lived in Greene County, Indiana through the 1870 census and afterward moved to Bear Creek, Montgomery, Missouri. His wife died sometime after the 1880 census. Tim is found living in Douglas, Effingham, illinois with his son Robert and family during the 1900 census. No further data.

Wesley Guthery’s birth on 8 July 1821 and death date 14 July 1821 are listed in the family bible. His middle initial is C or O. This is most likely George & Mary’s son rather than their son John’s son. There are no relationships listed in the bible. John & his wife Sarah married in early March 1821, so unless this was a premarital pregnancy for the young couple it is most likely a child of George and Mary.

Rhoda married John Campbell Marshall. They moved to Kentucky soon after their marriage , and then in the early 1830s to Washington, Brown, Indiana where they settled. Children: George W Marshall (1828), John Andrew Marshall (1830), Willie Ann Marshall (1833), Elizabeth Ann Marshall (1835). During the 1860 and 1870 census some of their grandchildren by son George are living with them, which seems to have created some confusing in online trees listing them with more children. Rhoda died in Johnson, Gibson, Indiana on 9 Dec 1869. She is buried at Maumee Cemetery in Owensville. John died sometime after the 1870 census of Washington, Brown, Indiana.

George L Guthery married Mary Ann ‘Polly’ Pabe. They initially lived in Fentress County, and then moved to Jefferson and later Greene County, Indiana. George was a carpenter and a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He and Polly had 2 sons and 3 daughters: an unidentified daughter (1826), Susannah Guthery (1834), Daniel L Guthery (1837), Margaret Guthery (1839), and Joshua Guthery (1839). Father Guthery died on 1 January 1890 in Newberry, Greene, Indiana. His wife Polly had predeceased him at an unknown date. Daniel was his only surviving child at the time of his death.

Sally was married three times. Her first husband was John W Carpenter, with whom she had 4 daughters: Rhoda Jane Carpenter (1829), Mary Ann Carpenter (1831), Lucinda Carpenter (1831), Minerva Elizabeth Carpenter (1838). John died around 1838 in Greene County, Indiana. Sally remarried on 16 August 1838 to George W Esplinger, with whom she had 1 son, also named George, but her new husband died sometime after the 1840 census. Sally eventually married Abner Bogard on 4 Sep 1861 when she was 51. No children by this marriage. Abner died in 1873, and Sally survived him. She passed away on 19 Nov 1878 in Daviess County, Indiana.

His first marriage was to Pernina Emaline Mullinex by whom he had George W Guthery (1830), Nancy Jane Guthery (1832), Nathaniel Hagan Guthery (1833), John Wesley Guthery (1836), Jeremiah Young Guthery (1838), Polly Ann Guthery (1842), Sarah Guthery (1844), George Leonid Guthery (1846), and Artis George Guthery (1850). His wife Pernina died in 1852, and about 2 years later he married Sarah (MNU). They had 3 children: Elizabeth Jane Guthery (1854), Pernina Eveline Guthery (1857), and James M Guthery (1860). Sarah presumably died 1860-1862. Young’s 3rd wife was widow Nancy Jane Fisher nee Trent whom he married on 27 Nov 1862 in Doniphan County, Kansas. They had 3 children: Mary Bell Guthery (1863), William Sherman Guthery (1865), and Susan E Guthery (1867). He died on 9 April 1867 in Virgil, Greenwood, Kansas. His widow Nancy died in 1908.

Leah married Jeremiah Marshall. They lived in Brown and Greene Counties, Indiana. Their children were James H Marshall (1840), Esther Marshall (1844), George L Marshall (1846), Lucy Ellen Marshall (1851). Leah died sometime after the 1870 census. Jeremiah’s death is listed in trees as 1871.

Milly Anna Guthery married John Parks. They had 3 sons: Joseph Y Parks (1833), George T Parks (1833), and John Parks (1839). She was only 32 at her death on 17 Feb 1849.

The family lived in Brown and Greene Counties, Indiana. Lucinda died on 18 Dec 1869 in Lone Tree, Greene County. Samuel died on 1875.

Timothy was first married to Martha A Barker by whom he had 2 daughters and 2 sons: Mary Ann Guthery (1841), Sarah J Guthery (1843), George D Guthery (1846), and Thomas Guthery (1849). Martha was listed in the 1850 census of Taylor, Greene, Indiana, but presumably died during the next 5 or so years. Timothy remarried about 1857 to Percilla Osborn Black. They lived in Greene County, Indiana and Montgomery County, Missouri with their children: Martha A Guthery (1858), Samuel Albert Guthery (1859), James Robert Guthery (1861), Elijah Hamilton Guthery (1869), Verminda Guthery (1870), Verilla M Guthery (1870), Lucy Ellen Guthery (1875). Percilla died sometime between 1875 and 1880 as she is not listed with the family during the 1880 census. Timothy was still alive in 1900 during the census for Douglas, Effingham, Illinois where he was living with his son Robert Guthery and family.

Findings:

The primary finding is the Y-DNA match to men of the Ballew/Ballou name. A search of the lineages of these genetic matches could lead to the discovery of a common ancestral location in Virginia, if that is indeed the place where the causal event for GFG11 occurred.

There are currently 5 men matching GFG11’s genetic profile, two of whom have lineages traceable to George & Mary (Young) Guthrie. Both of these descend from their son Young Guthery.

Kit 20740 is only a 12-marker Y-DNA test, but the known lineage and the 12/12 match with the Group Mode DNA (most common result for the group at any given genetic marker) make it a match.

Kit 376264 is a 67-marker Y-DNA test matching Group Mode DNA 66/67. The single variance at DYS607 is unique to his kit.
