NOTES:
This Beatty-Guthrie connections has become victim to misidentification and copying errors in online family trees. Having the names John and Jane makes it a little too easy to attach these folks to the wrong vital data. The Allied Families section on The Beatty’s in American Guthrie and Allied Families primarily focuses on William Beatty and Sarah Guthrie, the siblings of John Beatty and Jane Guthrie, but it does provide us with a little bit of information on the Beatty family’s origins. Two brothers, Samuel and Joseph Beatty, sons of a John Beatty in Northern Ireland, had come to Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Joseph Beatty remained there, but Samuel settled in Westmoreland County, and married Margaret Lemmon. They are the progenitors of the Beatty line associated with this Guthrie family (GFG2A-Branch G). Their children were John Beatty who married Jane Guthrie, William Beatty who married Sarah Guthrie, Jennie Beatty who married George Crawford, Samuel who married Mary Kiskaddon, Margaret Beatty who married William Reed, and Mary Beatty who married James Walker, not necessarily presented in birth order.

John Beatty both 250 acres of land in Sugar Creek Township, Armstrong, PA in November 1813. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in Sugar Creek Township in January 1814.

The next complication is that we don’t have exact Dates of Birth documented for either John or Jane, so the tendency is that people have grabbed random information for any John or Jane who seems to fit the profile. The best we can do is estimate DOB from census records. This couple married in Westmoreland County, PA on 31 Dec 1789. They were in their own household in Washington Twp. on the 1790 Census: John Beatty – 1M 16 and Over, 1M Under 16, and 1 F. Listed on the same census page as the households of Wm Guthrie, Saml Beatty, Wm Beatty, and John Guthrie.

RESIDENCES: This family moved from Westmoreland County, PA to Armstrong County, PA. The most likely census trail leads us to 1800: Buffalo, Armstrong, PA to 1810 and 1820: Sugarcreek, Armstrong, PA to 1830: Perry, Armstrong, PA.

Perry Township was formerly a part of Sugar Creek. It was officially organized as Perry in 1845.

AGE CALCULATIONS: In 1790 John is simply listed as 16+ years of age, born before 1774. By 1800, John was either 26-44 or 16-25 (born 1756-1774), probably the latter, and Jane 16-25 (1756-1774). By 1810, John is in the 45+ category (born before 1766) and Jane is 26-44 (1766-1784). Both are 45+ in 1820 (born before 1775). John and Jane are both listed as 60-69 in the 1830 census (born 1761-1770). By narrowing these parameters, John was probably born between 1761-1764 and Jane between 1761-1770. We have one more census year to consider for Jane since she lived longer than John. I’m not certain where she was living in 1840, but she was in Perry, Armstrong, PA in 1850 and is listed as 83 years of age (born about 1767). Some trees have listed Jane with the same DOB as her sister Sarah, 12 Aug 1763, but there is no indication in the current records that they were twins. AGAF does not list any DOB for Jane Guthrie. Other dates found appear to be those of different women of the same name. The best estimate of John’s DOB is 1761-1765 and Jane’s DOB is “about 1767”.

When and where John and Jane (Guthrie) Beatty died is also listed quite differently in various trees and even in memorials on Find-a-Grave, apparently because of misidentification errors.

The family was living in Perry, Armstrong, Pennsylvania in 1830 and were still there when John Beatty died. He wrote a will dated 14 Nov 1838 identifying himself, his surviving wife, Jane, and his children: Jane Campbell, Margaret Hall, Elizabeth Fowler, Agness Sheppard, John G Beatty, Samuel Beatty, William Beatty. Also leaves to John Beatty Guthrie, Sarah Guthrie’s son, $15. Names William Campbell and William Beatty his executors. The will was recorded, sworn, and subscribed on 1 Feb 1839.|

After the death of her husband, Jane (Guthrie) Beatty remained in Perry, Armstrong, Pennsylvania. She is likely the older woman listed in the household of her son, William Beatty, in Perry during the 1840 census, as she was also named as a member of his household there in 1850. She was listed as 83 years of age in 1850. Although her exact date of death is unknown, Jane most likely died in Perry, Armstrong, Pennsylvania, and is also probably buried with her husband John Beatty somewhere in Armstrong County.

JANE BEATTY

According to ‘The Beatty Book’ the eldest child of John and Jane (Guthrie) Beatty was named Jane Ann. I have yet to find a document with her middle name including in the published Campbell history, so will for now simply list her a Jane. She was born about 1793 in Pennsylvania. Many trees list all of the children as being born in Perry, Armstrong, PA, but the Beatty family did not pruchase land there until 1813, so Jane was likely born in Westmoreland County. She married William Campbell on 11 Apr 1811 and they eventually settled in Fairview, Butler, Pennsylvania. William died on 30 July 1841, but Jane survived him by almost 37 years. She died on 15 March 1878.

AGNES ‘NANCY’ BEATTY

Agness Beatty was born on 31 May 1795. Nancy is a common nickname for Agnes, which stems from the name Annis in the Middle Ages, which later became Ann, then Nan and Nancy. Use of Nancy as a nickname for Agnes is common in Scotland. This particular Nancy married James Benjamin Shepard about 1816-1817. They had 6 known children born in Pennsylvania.

MARGARET BEATTY
3 June 1797 – 30 May 1884

Margaret Beatty was born in Pennsylvania on 3 June 1797. She married William Hall prior to 1830. It is unknown whether they had children; there is a male of 10-15 years old listed in the 1820 census. William Hall died in 1838 and Margaret remarried to her widowed brother-in-law, James Guthrie, the son of William and Agnes (Dixon) Guthrie. During his early life, James was a land surveyor and engaged in the real estate business. Later, he took up trade as a tanner. He was also Justice of the Peace in Apollo for ten years and served as an assistant clerk in the land office at Harrisburg between 1872-3. Margaret and James had no children of their own.

John Guthrie Beatty was born on 22 April 1800 in Pennsylvania. He married Isabella Walker about 1825. John was a farmer. They lived in Washington and Loyalhanna, Westmoreland County. They had a large family of 6 daughters and 2 sons. they were members of the Saltsburg Presbyterian Church. John died on 14 Jan 1852 and Isabella 29 years later on 12 Feb 1881. They are buried at Edgewood Cemetery in Saltsburg, Indiana County, PA.

SAMUEL BEATTY

The birth year of 1802 is a very rough estimate. Samuel Beatty lived in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He was unmarried. Upon the writing of his will in 1839, he named his brother, William Beatty, as his executor, and left 100 acres of land on the Allegheny River given to him by his father’s will to his siblings. Burial location unknown.

WILLIAM BEATTY

The Beatty Book reveals that William Beatty was born in Perry Township, Armstrong County, PA on 9 May 1805. He married Elizabeth Ann Sedwick/Sedgwick on 6 Jan 1833. She was then 16 years of age. William inherited land from his father’s estate in 1838 and upon his brother Samuel’s untimely death the following year a portion of Samuel’s inherited land in Perry Township. A farmer, William and his wife Elizabeth were living there with their children, and widowed mother Jane, then 83, during the 1850 census. William died in Washington Twp on 1 Oct 1854. Elizabeth remained on the 25 acre farm they owned in Butler County, PA until 1870, and resided in North Bloomfield, Trumbull, Ohio between 1870 and 1876. Afterward, she lived in Butler County, PA again until her death on 18 Feb 1889.

A rough estimate for Elizabeth Beatty’s DOB is 1808. Born in Pennsylvania, she married on 2 Nov 1826 George Carson Fowler. They made their home in Butler County and had 2 sons and 5 daughters. Elizabeth died on 17 December 1847. Her burial location is unknown. George remarried to Mary ‘Polly’ Magill on 21 Aug 1849 with whom he had additional children. Polly died in 1887. George died in Allegheny, Butler, PA on 22 Oct 1894 at 91 years of age. They are buried at Scrubgrass Presbyterian Cemetery in Emlenton, Venango, PA.

SARAH BEATTY

Sarah Beatty was born about 1813 in Perry Township, Armstrong, Pennsylvania. She married James Guthrie, who was the son of William Guthrie & Agnes ‘Nancy’ Dixon. They had one son, John Beatty Guthrie, prior to her death at only 22 years of age. James married Sarah’s older sister, Margaret Beatty, and lived in Apollo Township in Armstrong County, PA where he was a land surveyor, and involved in real estate. Sarah’s son John Beatty Guthrie received a very good education, read law, and was admitted to the bar of Armstrong County in 1857. He became a clerk in the surveyor-general’s office and served there for two years, with his father working as his assistant. James Guthrie died on 23 Sep 1882. He, along with his wives Sarah and Margaret, and son John are all buried at Riverview Cemetery in Apollo.
