NOTES:
Caution! There are quite a few trees out there that have mixed and matched this John Guthrey with the son of GFG5’s William Guthrie and Eleanor Abbott.. Their son is connected with Halifax NC and died in Buncombe, NC, and his wife was named Anna Smith. The man who was the son of Thomas Guthrey and Sarah Oakes lived in Halifax VA, not in NC, and his wife was Betty Ann Allen. Both men were Revolutionary War Soldiers.
John Guthrey was the youngest of Thomas and Sarah Guthrey’s children. He was born in Cumberland County, Virginia about 1759. His marriage to Betty Ann Allen is recorded in Cumberland County. The marriage bond was dated 25 May 1785 with William Guthrey (presumably his older brother) providing surety, likely another reason for the confusion.
John Guthrey’s Pension and Bounty-Land Application File is Number S.8642. (Ancestry) (Fold3).
The John Guthrey within the file was born about 1760. The names of his parents are not stated within the records leading to a number of potential descendants or information-seekers like author Lawrence R Guthrie to make inquiries. “While residing in Cumberland County, John Guthrey enlisted and served as a private with the Virginia troops, as follows– from May 1780 in Captain Charles Balloo’s company, Colonel Stubblefield’s regiment, a short while in Colonel Faulkner’s regiment, and was discharged by Colonel Faulkner in October 1780; from February 1, 1781, six weeks in Captain Charles Balloo’s company and was in the Battle of Guilford Court House under Colonel Randolph; from September 1, 1781, nine weeks in the Commissary under Benjamin Wilson, by order of Colonel George Carrington. The soldier, John Guthrey, lived in Cumberland County, Virginia until about ten years after the Revolution, when he moved to Halifax County, Virginia. He was allowed pension on his application executed September 25, 1832, still a resident of said Halifax County. There are no data in this claim concerning the family of John Guthrey.” Signed by A.D.Hiller Assistant to the Administrator.
The US Pension Roll of 1835 includes John Guthrey residing in Halifax County, Virginia. LRG’s correspondents thought that John Guthrey may have moved to Prince Edward County VA near the end of his life, but found no data to verify it.

August Court 1837
Satisfactory evidence was adduced in Court whereupon John Guthrey who was a Revolutionary pensioner has died on the 17th day of January 1836. That he had no widow living and that Allen Guthrey, John Guthrey, Sally Crews wife of Richard Crews, Martha Keeling the wife of Leonard Keeling, Rebecca Rowlettl the wife of Archibald Rowlett, Seny Guthrey, Susan Guthrey, Fanny W Guthrey, Eliza the wife of James McCraw (Campbell) Mary Wallon the wife of Thomas Wallon, William Guthrey, & Richard Guthrey are the only children and heirs at law of the aforesaid John Guthrey decd and that they are all of lawful age.

CHILD 1: SALLY KING GUTHREY
1785VA – 1848VA
Spouse: Richard Crews
Sally King Guthrey was born about 1785. Her parents married on 25 May 1785, so the date may be an estimate. She would have been a young bride on 22 June 1801 when she married Richard Crews, son of John Sadler and Dolly (Hunt) Crews. They lived in Halifax County, Virginia and produced a family of nine children.
The 1820 Census of Meadsville, Halifax, Virginia lists the Household of Richard Crews on 7 Aug 1820:
1M and 1F 26-44 (born 1776-1784)
2M 16-25 (both 16-18) (born 1802-1804) – Unidentified, George 1804
1M and 1F 10-15 (born 1805-1810) Richard John 1806, Elizabeth Ann 1806
3M and 2F under 10 (born 1811-1820) Parthena 1811, Zemeriah 1813, Mourning 1814, David 1815, Armistead 18??
2 Engaged in Agriculture
2 Engaged in Manufactures
The 1830 census lists Sarah K Crews of Halifax, Virginia as a Head of Household:
1F 40-49
3M 20-29 (born 1801-1810) Unidentified, George 1804, Richard (1806)
1M and 2F 15-19 (born 1811-1815) Parthena 1811, Zemeriah 1813, Mourning 1814
2M 10-14 (born 1816-1820) David 1815?, Armistead 1822
1F 5-9 (born 1821-1825) Margarete 1824
It appears their marriage ended in separation and presumably divorce. The 1832 Last Will and Testament of John Sadler Crews basically disinherited his son Richard Crews by leaving him only $1 along with the statement that he was to have no more of his estate. John provided generously for the support of Sally K Crews, formerly Sally K Guthry, and her children, while noting her to be Richard’s “first wife”. He had purchased Richard’s personal property prior to his departure from Virginia and gave all of it to his daughter-in-law. He further made a bequest of his slave, Henry, a cow, and calf, and $500 to be divided amongst the children as they reached 21 years of age.
Upon the death of her own father in 1836, Sarah K Crews, along with her siblings, sold their father’s estate for $930.70. This was a 454 acre estate of Children Creek sold to Archibald Rowley, husband of her sister Rebecca.
On 11 Feb 1837, Sarah K Crews purchased from John Crews 243 acres of land on Children and Catawba Creeks. (Halifax DB 43, pp.639-641.)
The 1840 Census of Halifax, Virginia does not show Sarah/Sally K Crews in a Head of Household status. Because the census enumerates family members rather than listing them by name, we can guess that Sally is living in the home of her son Armistead Crews in 1840. His household includes a female of 50-59 years of age.
Sally lived until about 1848. An appraisement of her property was taken on 3 March 1848 (Halifax WB 22, p.458) with an inventory recorded on 23 February 1850. An estate accounting was submitted 25 March 1850. (Halifax WB 22, p481-482)
Is there an original source identifying Sally’s children? The names below have been gathered either from random documents connected with Sally or family trees.

CHILD 2: ALLEN GUTHREY
1788VA – Aft. 1850
Spouse: Mary M. Bostick
Allen was his mother’s maiden name. Per the 1850 census, Allen Guthrie was 62 years old at that time therefore estimated to be born about 1788. He is more often listed prior to his brothers, which could indicate he is the eldest. He was a farmer. His marriage to Mary M. Bostick took place on 26 December 1812 in Halifax County, Virginia where they lived in its Northern District. This couple had 3 sons and 4 daughters.
On 22 Jan 1824, Allen Guthrey purchased from Samuel and Sarah Smith for $630 a tract of land on Catawba Creek containing 613 acres. (DB33-p80-IMG279) A 20-acre tract on Catawba Creek purchased from Caleb Baker dated 26 Jun 1824 was added to the property. (DB32-p.300-IMG166)
Six years later, it appears that his brother William Guthrey made a decision (unverified) to leave Halifax County, Virginia. He and his wife Sarah sold their property of Childress Creek to brother Allen. (DB38-p.14-IMG19)

Allen Guthrey died sometime between 1850 and 1855. A current accounting of the estate was recorded on 1 Oct 1855, but that usually comes after documentation of the estate Inventory and Appraisement, and Sales, which were not found in the Halifax will books. Note that William Tyree was paid $5 on 24 May 1855 for preaching at the funeral. This is the date of payment, not necessarily the funeral. Estate account dates begin as early as 20 May 1854.

The widow, Mary Guthrie, served as administratrix of the estate. Trees list her as the daughter of Absalom Bostick and Mary Petty. Mary was born about 1790 according to the 1850 census, and about 1793 according to the Federal Mortality Schedule. She died of cancer in May 1870.

CHILD 3: WILLIAM GUTHREY
1788VA – Aft. 1836
Spouse: Sarah Street
Birth order for these children is questionable as few of them seem to have well-documented birth dated. Allen is frequently listed before William. No documentation has been found indicating they are twins.
Online trees also show differences in the identity of William Guthrie’s wife. The selection of the pairing often takes the tree and its descendants in a different direction. A deed securing the sale of inherited and/or deeded land by John Guthrey’s heirs (Deed Book, Volume 44 1837-1838 Page 391) includes identifying “William Guthrey and Sarah his wife”. Although it does not provide information on her maiden name, it also infers that their date of marriage was prior to John Guthrey’s death.
The most likely record found is the following:
William Guthrey married Sarah Street in Halifax County, Virginia on 31 July 1824. If this is the case, he was in his mid thirties at the time of his marriage. The 1820 census of his father’s household implies that he is probably still living there, but there is no male in his age category in his father’s household in 1830, which means that William and his wife have either formed their own household or are living elsewhere. Although there are about 15 – 17 Guthrie households in Halifax at that time none are listed with a William Guthrie as the Head of Household.
On 3 March of 1830, William Guthrey and wife Sarah, presumably this couple sell some property to brother Allen Guthrey. (DB38-p.14-IMG19) The sale was made for a 110 acre tract in Halifax County on Childress Creek for $300 hand paid. Neighbors listed: Thomas Keeling, Abshue George, the estate of William Hubbard. A 50 acre section of this property had been purchased from Thomas and Milly Keeling on 26 July 1828 for $100. (DB37-Page 14-IMG 415). The other 60 acres came from a purchase made 30 Aug 1827 from Winston and Biddy Foulas, neighbors of Keeling and Hubbard, for consideration of $159 hand paid. (DB35-p.194-IMG478)
It is very likely that William Guthrey, wife Sarah, and any children moved out of Halifax County after the sale of their property.
An indenture dated 13 Oct 1836, after the death of their father, John Guthrey, his children and heirs sold 454 acres of land on Childress Creek to Archibald H Rowlett for a consideration of $937.70. Rather than dividing the land into small tracts, they sold it as a whole and split the money. William Guthrey signed the deed along with the other heirs. (DB44-p.391-IMG210)
William Guthrey does not appear in the 1840 census of Halifax County, nor are there any additional property purchases or sales by a man of his name until the 1850s. Those are likely to belong to others of similar name. By 1840, William Guthrey would be about 52 years of age. A census search for households in adjacent counties did not produce any men of the right age bracket who were not already identified.
No probate records found in Halifax County, Virginia.

CHILD 4: JOHN GUTHREY JR.
1791VA-1860VA
Spouse: Edness ‘Edna’ Adams
John Guthrey Jr was born bet. 1789 – 1791 according to the estimation from his age at the 1850 census and the age listed on the 1860 Federal Mortality Schedule. He married Edness Adams, called Edna, daughter of Moza and Polly (George) Adams. Like the majority of the family, John was a farmer. They lived in the Meadsville area and Northern District of Halifax County, Virginia where they had 5 sons and two daughters. Edna died sometime between the 1850 and 1860 censuses. John was listed as a widower on the Mortality Schedule.
Property records are a little more difficult to distinguish based on the common given name, John. Those of his sons may be easier to pin down. See Deed Book entries in Reading and Research, below.

CHILD 5: MARTHA “PATSEY” GUTHREY
1791VA – Aft. 1870VA
Spouse: Leonard Keeling
Martha ‘Patsey’ Guthrie was born about 1791 per the 1850 and 1860 census record. Patsy’s marriage to Leonard Keeling most likely occurred in 1810, but there are discrepancies in the transcribed marriage records showing 2 July 1810, 21 July 1810, or 21 July 1816. The original images filmed at Family Search are locked to online viewing. The 1810 date seems to be the most appropriate as there is no earlier known marriage for Leonard Keeling and there are at least 2 daughters born prior to 1816.
The 1830 Census: Leonard Keeling Household – Halifax, VA

Leonard and Patsy were both alive and living in Halifax County, Virginia during the 1850 and 1860 censuses. The exact DOD for Leonard Keeling is unknown. Will Book No. 29 is locked to online viewing, but no will was found in either WB 28 or WB 30. Will Book 30 does include Leonard Keeling’s Estate Inventory and Appraisement on 7 Jun 1866 (WB30-p.194-IMG106), a report of Accounting Current on 1 Dec 1870 (said report indicates Keeling died on 24 Oct, but does not state year of death) (WB30-p.207-IMG113), and an Account of Sales on 14 Nov 1866 (WB30-p.241 – IMG131). No mention of a widow in these documents.
There is no clear picture in the documents currently screened as to the number of children in the family. Some census records appear to be multigenerational, so that in-laws may be included, or younger individuals may be grandchildren. Two of the Keeling children also married into the Crews family making both sides of those lineages descendants of GFG4’s Thomas Guthrey and Sarah Oakes.

CHILD 6: MARY ELIZABETH “ELIZA”/ “DOC BETSY” GUTHREY
1793VA – 1886VA
Spouse 1: William S Hubbaard
Spouse 2: James L McCraw
Eliza Guthrey was born about 1793 in Halifax County, Virginia. She married at 22 to William Hubbard. The couple had three children: John C Hubbard, William S Hubbard, and Mary Hubbard. All were under 21 years of age at the time of their father’s death about 1827. An inventory of his estate was recorded in Halifax County, VA on 6 Dec 1827. The following August in 1828, Elizabeth brought suit against Richard A Guthrey, the administrator of her husband’s estate on behalf of herself and children.
On 11 Oct 1830, Eliza remarried to widower James L McCraw. His first wife was Eliza B Green by whom he had several children later named in his will. His marriage to Mary Elizabeth (Guthrey) Hubbard produced two children: Narcissa Scott McCraw and Woodson A McCraw. James McCraw died on 10 Oct 1861 in Campbell County, Virginia once again leaving a widow behind. Elizabeth survived until 30 Sep 1886. She was 93 years old.
Some online trees include a photograph labeled as “Doc Betsy”, but there is no accompanying story to explain the reference.

CHILD 7: SUSAN A GUTHREY
1799VA – 1871VA
Spouse: N/A – Unmarried
Susan Guthrey was born on 3 April 1799 in Halifax County, Virginia. During the 1850 census she was living in the household of her brother John Guthrey, his wife Edna and family. In 1860, she was the housekeeper for her bachelor nephew, James F. M. Guthrey. At 70 years of age, she remained living with James after his marriage to Martha Holt. Susan died on 13 September 1871 in Stanton, Halifax, Virginia.

CHILD 8: SENY GUTHREY
1800VA – Bef. 1853
Spouse: John Tucker
Her name could simply be “Seny” or a nickname for a more formal name of the time such as Aseneth, or a variant spelling of Cena or Sienna. This one’s a little confusing and not just because her given name may simply be a nickname.
The same Halifax Minute Book document listing her as ‘Seny Guthrey’ in 1836 reveals that she was living and single at that time. Her marriage to John Tucker is recorded on 28 August 1843, which would make her about 43 years old at the time of her marriage.
The 1850 census of Northern District, Halifax, VA is the only one listing John 59 and Seena 50 as a couple. The household also includes: Mary Tucker, 20, and Perlina F Tucker, 17. No relationships are specified, but it seems likely that John was previously married and these are his daughters. A look into the Halifax records shows Mary and Perlina listed among others presumed to be their siblings. Some of the other families are listed on the same 1850 census page.
John Tucker, in Halifax Deed Book 54, p.595 (FHL 008359371 IMG 312) wrote a deed granting his lands, slaves, and possessions to his children: Elizabeth High (formerly Tucker), Sarah Adams (formerly Tucker), Mary High (formerly Tucker), Thomas T Tucker, William G Tucker, Perlina F Owen (Formerly Tucker). He made his mark on 1 Jan 1853. There is no mention of his wife in the document, which would suggest that she predeceased him.
Presumably his wife Seny had died by 1853 and John Tucker was preparing for his days ahead by arranging for his contuinued “handsome maintenance” under the care of his adult children.
Many online trees list John Tucker’s first wife as Wilmoth Hodges, but this appears to be a separate couple. John Tucker’s close DOB to the second John Tucker about 1790 also lends to the confusion. John Tucker and Wilmoth Hodges married 16 Dec 1813. John 52 and Wilmouth 46 were living in LaRue County, KY in 1850, and the only members of their household. Next door was the household of a Paul Tucker, 46. This census is the same year that John Tucker 59 and Seena 50 were listed with Mary and Perlina back in Halifax, VA. Wilmouth (Hodge) Tucker died in LaRue, KY on 1 Nov 1852. The widower then married an Elizabeth Hodge with whom he had a daughter.
Perlina’s death record documents her mother’s maiden name as Monroe. A review of Halifax VA records shows that John Tucker married Polly Monroe on 11 Dec 1822, a date appropriate to identify her as the mother of all of the children mentioned in his deed/will. It is likely that John Tucker died about 1853 in Halifax County, VA.

CHILD 9: REBECCA GUTHREY
1800VA – 1858TN
Spouse: Archibald H Rowlett
Rebecca Guthrey was born on 27 December 1800 in Halifax County, Virginia. She married at 23 years of age to Archibald H Rowlett, a son of Richard and Nancy (Mason) Rowlett on 22 November 1824. They initially made their home in Halifax County where Archibald worked in agriculture as a farmer. They had 2 sons and 3 daughters born in Virginia. Prior to the 1850 census, they moved to Weakley County, Tennessee. Rebecca’s youngest sister, for whom she named her eldest daughter, accompanied them. They lived in District 14 near Mount Pelia. Rebecca died at 57 years old on 23 Sep 1858. She is buried at the Crutchfield-Rowlett Cemetery in Weakley County, TN. After a year of mourning, Archibald married again, to Rebecca’s sister, Frances ‘Fanny’ Guthrey. The ceremony took place on 15 October 1859 in Weakley, TN. Fanny was 52 at the time of the marriage. They had no children of their own. The 1870 census includes several black “domestic servants” with the Rowlett surname who were likely former family slaves. Archibald died first on 7 March 1871. Fanny was living with her stepson/nephew George W Rowlett and family during the 1880 census. She died on 2 January 1884. Archibald and Fanny are also buried at the same cemetery.

CHILD 10: RICHARD A GUTHREY / GUTHRIE
1804-05VA – Aft. 1864TN
Spouse: Martha ‘Patsy’ Yeates
There were at least 3 or 4 Richard Guthries of varying ages in Halifax County, Virginia about the same time. Two or three of them were known as “Richard A” and another as “Richard B”. The latter appears to be the son of Thomas Guthrie and Mary ‘Polly’ Baskerville, presumably making him Richard Baskerville Guthrie. This man, being the son of John Guthrey and Betty Ann Allen, would presumably be Richard Allen Guthrey. Inconveniently, that does not show up in the documents.
The Minutes listing the DOD of John Guthrey and naming his heirs simply lists this son as Richard Guthry. No middle initial.
On 5 January 1828, Richard A Guthrey married Martha Toombs, the widow of Thomas Toombs and a daughter of John H and Rebecca (Chandler) Yeates. Martha had one child from her first marriage, a daughter, Sarah ‘Sally’ Toombs, born in 1824.
There were only 2 men named Richard Guthrey in the Halifax VA census: Richard A and Richard B. Assuming that this man is Richard A Guthry, he was 20-29 years of age, so born 1801-1810. The household included: 1M & 1F 20-29, 1F 5-9, 1F under 5, 2 slaves: 1M 36-54, 1F under10. They purchased property on the east side of the road leading from Meadsville to Barksdale’s stone, sold it a couple of years later, and purchased a larger property in the same area.
By 1840, they had moved from Virginia to Hardin County, Kentucky where the household was enumerated with: 1F 40-49, 1M & 1F 30-39, 1F 15-19, 1F 10-14, 1M 5-9, 2M under 5, 1 F Slave: 10-23. However, in 1845, Patsy’s daughter, Sarah (Toombs) Whitman and her husband, then living in LaRue, KY, appointed Richard A Guthrey to act as their lawful attorney to secure her rights in her grandparents’ Halifax VA estates.
The 1850 census finds R. A. Guthrery, wife Martha, and family living in Hamiltons, LaRue, Kentucky, the same location as Patsy’s daughter Sally (Toombs) Whitman and family. Richard made several property purchases and sales while in LaRue. The earliest date was 1847 and last in 1853. Martha’s DOD came prior to the 1860 census. The last record found for her is that last property sale in LaRue KY in 1853.
Richard moved to Weakley County, TN, another location common to other extended family. Richard’s sisters Rebecca and Frances (Guthrey) Rowlett had settled there. It is unknown if Martha was still living at the time.
R.A. Gurthrie, is listed in 1860 as 63 farmer 2000 4000 VA; Virginia 19 KY; Christiana 15 KY; Thos W Miles 23 KY; Rebecca Miles 27 VA; Martha 5 TN; Jonas 3 TN; Richard 6/12 TN. Next door to home of son JW Guthrie.
Richard’s death location is unverified, but was probably in Weakley County, TN sometime after 1864, which was his last property transaction.

* Richard A Guthrie b.1838KY is credited with a son, Marion Francis Guthrie, born in 1876. Two direct male descendants of two different wives have matching Y-DNA that does not match GFG4. Most common surname match is Harris. Richard’s story involves possible legal entanglements that may have caused him to leave his family behind. He is not present with the family in the 1870, 1880, or 1900 censuses, nor has he been traced elsewhere. It is possible that Marion Francis Guthrie is not Richard’s biological son, but we do need a Guthrie male who descends from Gilderoy’s line to participate in YDNA testing to determine if the genetic mismatch (GFG4-B) is limited to MFG’s descendants or is applicable to the previous generation indicating that the source YDNA came from Richard A Guthrie Sr.
** Personal Note: I have Bryant ancestry. Allie is my 1st cousin 4x removed, so her Guthrie descendants have Autosomal DNA matches with me through the Bryant side rather than the Guthrie side of their tree.

CHILD 11: NANCY GUTHREY
1805VA – Aft. 1860VA
Spouse: Thomas Walton
The transcription of Virginia Marriage records lists Nancy Guthrie’s groom as Thomas Walton. They married on 18 Nov 1823 in Halifax County, VA. The county Minutes listing her father’s DOD and heirs mistakenly lists Nancy as Mary. The surname listed for her and her husband Thomas appears to be Wallen. An account of sales for the John Guthrey estate includes Thomas Wallon or Walton.
There is a Thomas Waller in Halifax who married Nancy West) on 17 Mar 1821. He appears to be listed in ongoing census records in Halifax. In nearby Pittsylvania, VA a Thomas Waller married a Nancy Jennings 21 Feb 1820, and a Thomas W Walton married a Nancy W Shelton there on 16 Oct 1820. These make for a few crisscrossed trees and an unclear path for this Nancy Guthrey’s family.
No Thomas Walter/Waller/Wallon probate records were found in Halifax County Will books thru 1845. A Property Record Search thru 1830 found no land purchases in Halifax County. This suggests that Thomas and Nancy (Guthrey) Walton may have left the county after their marriage. Still looking for evidence of where they might have ended up.

CHILD 12: FRANCES “FANNY” WOODSON GUTHREY
1807VA – 1884TN
Spouse: Archibald H Rowlett
Frances Woodson Guthrey, known as Fanny, was born in Halifax County, Virginia on 11 January 1807. She was the youngest child in the family. She was still single after her parents deaths and decided to move to Weakley County, Tennessee with her sister Rebecca and family. She was aunt to the five Rowlett children as they grew up. Her sister Rebecca died in 1858. A year later Fanny became the wife to her widowed brother-in-law Archibald Rowlett. Fanny was already in her early fifties, and they had no additional children. Archibald’s death came in 1871 after which Fanny sold her dower land and moved in with her stepson/nephew George W. Rowlett. She died on 2 January 1884 and was buried at the Crutchfield-Rowlett Cemetery in Weakley County, Tennessee.
