NOTES:

William Guthrie was born in Virginia in or about 1784. His father rented an apple farm in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1792, but the family moved to Woodford County, Kentucky between 1793 and 1797.

The only published marriage for William Guthrie is to Mary Yeates, the daughter of Benjamin Yates in Shelby County, KY on 5 March 1822. At that time, William would have been 38 years of age. Although it is not impossible that he simply married later in life having remained a bachelor during that time, the census records of Woodford County, KY suggest he may have been previously married.

The 1810 census of Woodford, KY lists a William Guthrie (transcribed Guthrie) household on 6 Aug 1810 with: 1M 26-44, 1F 16-25, 1M and 1F under 10. He is not listed as a HOH in 1820, which may indicate that his wife had died by that point and that they were living with relatives. Just as this first marriage remains speculative, the identity of the children associated with that marriage are also speculative. This census record for 1810 enumerates a son and daughter born between 1801 and 1810. The 1820 census has not been found for this family, so the attachment of son William A Guthrie born 1811-1820 remains a theory.

William Guthrie married Mary L Yeates (1804-1850) in Shelby County, Kentucky on 4 March 1822. They spent some time in Henry County, Kentucky, too. The William Guthrie household is listed there: 1M 70-79, 1M40-49 (presumably William), 1M and 1F 20-29 (presumably Mary), 1M 15-19, 2F 5-9, 1F under 5, Slaves: 1M 24-35, 1M and 1F 10-23, 2M under 10. Total Free White Persons: 8, Total Slaves: 7. Total Household: 15. Be aware that there was another William Guthrie living in Henry County, Kentucky in earlier decades (See 1810 and 1820 census) who died there in 1823. Both of these men have deeds documented in the Henry County, KY records.

Between 1830 and 1840, William moved his family to Missouri. By 1850 they had settled in Platte County. His wife Mary died in 1851. Two years later, William married Mrs Mourning (Willis) Baker, the widow of David Baker, on 26 Oct 1853 in Clay County, Missouri. He was 69 to her 38. She had one daughter by her previous marriage, Nancy Baker (1839-1889).

William died in Platte City on 8 July 1854. Both he and Mary are buried in the Guthrie-Bonifant-Mitchell Cemetery in Weston, Platte, Missouri. His widow, Mourning Guthrie, whose tombstone reads ‘Mournan’ rather than Morning or Mourning, which have also been used for her, survived him by 9 years. During the 1860 census of Green, Platte, Missouri, she was living with her daughter Nannie (Baker) Duncan and family. Mourning’s death came on 5 April 1863. She was buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Camden Point, Platte, Missouri.

Abraham Lincoln’s endorsement is written on a letter from Representative Austin A King, 31 Dec 1864, asking pardon for Levi Brashear and William A. Guthrie, both of Platte County, Missouri, indicted for conspiracy in April 1862. No details found on the case at this time.

He had one daughter, Catherine J Guthrie, by his first wife.

Nancy Guthrie was born in Kentucky, but her family to Missouri aft 1830. She married in Monroe, Missouri on 9 Oct 1839 to Joseph J Kelly. He was a farmer and carpenter. They had a family of 7 children. They were living in Weston, Platte, MO during the 1850 and 1860 census years. By 1870, they were in St. Joseph, Buchanan, MO. Then in 1880, they are living in St. Louis, MO. Joseph Kelly died 11 Dec 1891. He was 72. Nancy survived him by 11 years.

Mrs Nancy Kelley entered the George H Nettleton Home for Aged Women on 6 Feb 1894 at age 70. Their records list her DOB as 3 Apr 1824 KY, and her death as 3 Aug 1902. She was a resident of the home at the time of her death. (Notes found at FindAGrave)

The DOD listed at FindAGrave is 4 Aug 1902, in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri. She was buried there in Union Cemetery Section 12 Row 5 Grave 2.

Linna A Guthrie was the first child in the family born in Missouri. She was just 16 at her marriage to Rev. Philip J Burruss, a Baptist minister. They lived in Weston, Platte, Missouri and raised a family of 4 sons and 2 daughters. They died within a few months of each other in 1881, Linna on April 3rd and Philip on December 2nd. Linna is buried at Camden Point Cemetery while Philip is buried at Burruss Cemetery in Weston, Platte, Missouri.

John M Guthrie was born in Henry County, Kentucky. He was the youngest son in the family. His parents moved to Platte City, Missouri when he was still a boy. He married Elvira Pence in Clay County, MO on 8 Nov 1847.

John took a job as a Railroad Contractor, but later occupied his time with farming. He and Elvira were parents to 4 children, three of whom predeceased them. She died on 12 Mar 1877 at the age of 43.

The St. Joseph Gazette in St Joseph Missouri published an obituary on Tuesday, 13 Mar 1877:
“Died, at the residence of the family in Weston yesterday at 2:30p.m., Mrs Elvira Guthrie. Mrs Guthrie was the daughter of the late Edward Pence of Platte County. She has been in quite infirm health for several years, and since last December has been almost constantly confined to her bed and enduring great suffering. She was an earnest and devoted member of the Christian church, and she died in the triumph of the faith. For months she had seen the end slowly but surely approaching, and when the final summons came, she was ready for it. She leaves a husband and one child, a bright and promising boy to cherish her memory. Three children having preceded her, the larger part of the family has already crossed the river to rest in the shad of God’s infinite mercy. The deceased will be buried in the city cemetery at Weston to-morrow.”

John M Guthrie died 20 August 1889 in Platte County, Missouri. He is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Weston, Platte, Missouri with Elvira and three of their children: Edward, Clarence, and Lucie.

Lucy Jane Guthrie was born in Independence, Clay, Missouri on the first of January 1840. Her parents settled in Platte County, Missouri where they were enumerated in the 1850 census. Her father died in 1854 when she was about 10 years old. At 17 years of age, on 9 Oct 1857, Lucy married James Dye. He was a son of John Kenneth Dye and Parthenia Frances Now of Mason County, KY. He was a farmer. They had four daughters born between 1857 and 1868. Lucy died on 22 Sep 1882 at only 42 years of age. James lived until 1925. He remarried twice, first to Elizabeth M Hamilton and secondly to Rofena Myers. They are all buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Weston, Platte, MO.

Elizabeth Guthrie was the youngest child of William & Mary (Yeates) Guthrie. She was born 10 Oct 1844 in Platte County, Missouri. Unless David Tanner Polk had two wives named Elizabeth, the marriage date of 12 May 1858 would indicate that Elizabeth was only about 13 at her marriage. The 1860 census does seem to indicate that his spouse Elizabeth was 15 with their daughter Mary 8 months of age. David was a master carpenter. Elizabeth died on 18 Aug 1901. David’s death followed three years later in 1904. They are buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Weston, Platte, MO.
